Hey Guys. I've been trying to root my Evo 4g for over a year and I am either messing up horribly or my EVO is just unrootable. I attempted flash/root it with revolutionary, but all I have is S-OFF.
The H-Boot Screen reads:
-Revolutionary-
SUPERSONIC EVT3 SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-6.16.1002
MICROP-041f
TOUCH PANEL-ATMEL224_16ab
RADIO-2.15.00.12.19
MAR 8 2011, 17:02:15
I really hope I can get some help, I've wanted this badly for over a year.
If you need any other information, please just ask.
Dude! You are already rooted! Revolutionary flashes a recovery for you, so all you need to do is flash a rom if you want.
Hit the thanks button if i have helped you in any way today !
+1 The Revolutionary tag means your bootloaded is unlocked and you have s off. Your good to go. Just do a Nandroid Backup. And then flash away.
But when I try to flash a rom over, it never works. Not even superuser works. I downloaded Terminal Emulator and typed su, but it doesnt do anything.

Do u have a custom recovery?
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
First, you probably need a custom recovery. Search for "amon ra evo" or "clockwork mod evo" follow the instructions on their page and that will get you a custom recovery. Do a "nandroid backup" so you have a backup of your original os
Second, look up SU evo, download the zip, and flash that in your recovery. That will give you su.
PS if you don't understand any or all of these terms, look up xda rooting for dummies
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
I tried all the steps on the recoveries, and they are all saying that I do not have access to superuser. Terminal emulator does not respond positive to su either.

Maybe a bad download, try this one...this is the one that I have used successfully...also, what recovery are you using right now? I have had issues with clockworkmod on occassion that has aborted installation of zips...
superuser http://dl.dropbox.com/u/30295084/CM9/Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip
amon ra recovery that you flash through bootloader, just rename zip to PC36IMG http://dl.dropbox.com/u/30295084/CM9/PC36IMG_ra-supersonic-4.3-smelkus-ics.zip
So try recovery first, then try flashing the superuser zip I linked above and see where that gets you.

edit: did you make sure to not put the zip in a folder on your sd card? it has to be on the root of your sdcard to be found.

I made sure I put it in the root, its not in any folder. The bootloader does say checking for PC36IMG.zip, but it can't find it. And I am 100% sure it is spelled correctly.

Either open up a file manager on your phone or mount to computer to look at the name if you added zip, delete that...I am stumped as to what else the issue would be...
This might be overkill, but you might want to ruu back to stock...redo revolutioanry and after you type yes download clockworkmod recovery in revolutioanry...boot into recovery, flash superuser zip and then boot the phone...it should work for you, but also should be working now.

Now that we have s-off is updating to the leak 2.2 easier or the same as before?
MUCH easier! Now all you have to do assuming you're already rooted and have applied the new unrEVOked forever patch is upgrade your radio then flash any of the 2.2 Froyo roms that are out right now. No more having to RUU thanks to unrEVOked our lives just got a lot easier.
so if i have this right, i would download the radio update put it on my sd, then go into clockwork and install it, then i can install a 2.2 rom from there and reflash?
heyitslou, thanks
Not clockwork I don't think, you'd go into bootloader menu and upgrade radio that way. I'm not sure if clockwork supports radio updates
i figured out the problem, it was a format issue on my card it wasn't FAT32 >_<
Just to confirm... as mentioned above you have to install the radio file from hboot.... and not rom manager... once you have ran that and also ran the s=off, you can then use rom manager to install anything you like.
that is true...now my next question do we need to do the wipes before doing roms still or no...i know i ask a lot of questions but this is my first smartphone and at some point i would like to contribute to roms/themes/apps/etc
With s-off...I want to flash the latest CMR

Anything? How about a new CMR recovery like 2.5.0.5? ROM manager only will let me install 2.5.0.1. Actually what good is a program like ROM Manager if they don't keep it updated with the latest recovery?
Can anyone tell me how to flash the latest CMR recovery after they have installed unrevoked forever (S-OFF)? Looks to me like I need to create an "android-info.txt" file and zip it up with an IMG file. But I'm not sure how create or what to include in the android-info.txt file...

Here's how I flashed the latest ClockworkMod Recovery. This is assuming you have all the right drivers that you were able to run Unrevoked 3 to root your phone.
Download the 2.5.0.5 image of ClockworkMod Recovery.
Run Unrevoked 3 but do NOT have your phone plugged in yet.
Go to File and select Custom Recovery and then select the 2.5.0.5 img
Then plug in your phone (with USB debugging on, of course) and let it run.
hope this helps.
the 2.15 radio andrynalyne (spelled wrong) posted also contains the latest clockword mod recovery (2.1.0.5). so if you want to update your radio and recovery image, that will take care if both of those for you

i run rom Manager and get the following screen.
First Screen:
you must root your phone for ROM Manager to function Superuser was not found at "/system/bin/su" or system/xbin/su". Use google search on your computer to find instructions to root your phone.
superuser from the market is installed...
Then i go and click Flash Alternate Recovery(RA Recovery v1.8.0) and it force closes.
Then i try to flash clockwork and it takes a long time too and i get a message An error occured while attempting to run privileged commands.
If the phone downloaded the OTA update for 3.30, as your first post suggests, then it became unrooted and you'll have to root it again.

You seem to not have SuperUser installed as a system app.
Go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=682828

ive been trying dat but when it comes to the part to flash the first PC36IMG, it doesnt find it, i formatted my sdcard and trying it again.
I am really failing at reading tonight, lol.
Can you boot into the bootloader and use ADB?
Could try ADB Push-ing the files extracted from the Superuser's flashable .zip to their respective locations.
Not sure how that would work out though, never tried it.
Get files "su" from su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip\system\bin
and "Superuser.apk" from su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip\system\app
put both files in the folder with ADB.
open adb command prompt and
Code:
ADB push Superuser.apk /system/app (Press Enter)
ADB push su /system/bin (Press Enter)
Then reboot back into the rom.
You might need to use a file explorer to navigate to /system/app and click Superuser.apk to install it.
(Uninstall old SuperUser from the market before installing.)
Worth a try if no one else has any fixes.

My DINC is latest Gingerbread 2.3.4.
I'm trying to get rid of the awful 'low memory' problems that I'm having on a daily basis.
I'm following this XDA guide
[HOW TO] Fix the "Low on space" problem (in plain English)
The PC drivers got installed fine.
But when I run unrevoked 3.22 it gets stuck on 'Rebooting into recovery'. At that point the phone shows the screen: ClockworkMod Recovery v5.0.2.0 (the screen has 9 selectable options in blue text). I can select the first option 'reboot system now' and the phone seems untouched. I've tried it a few times but keep running into the same problem.
Any ideas??
If you're in Recovery (oh that sounds so rude lol) press the optical button to select options. The power button functions as the back button while in recovery.

Trying to be delicate you're done! you now can download this file from androidsu (removed for it being junk) and then put it on to your SD card and flash it by going to install zip from SD and then find this file and say yes to flash. It will flash the superuser binary and the application effectively rooting your phone. you may also want to flash the s-off tool from unrevoked called unrevoked forever from here to give you the ability to flash alternate radios or splash screens or whatever you decide to!

I'm done? Sorry but I'm a bit confused - The instructions say in the last step:
-Once it's done, unplug your phone and ensure that a "Superuser Permissions" application is inside your app drawer.
Shouldn't I be seeing a new app named 'superuser permissions'? Since there's no app with that name I assumed unrevoked did not complete it's process.
Can I somehow verify that unrevoked was successful?
The fact that it has flashed clockwork is success enough, I know you want to be thorough but I have done this with my own phone as well as a friend's with perfect success of rooting the phone. My Inc now runs ics with perfect ease after completing the process you have. And trust me, the hardest part is behind you. If you download the files I cited above then you will flash them both using your new recovery then you will be set to do endless nods to your phone. My advice though before flashing anything to your phone is to check the Md5 carefully to male sure you don't flash corrupted files to your phone

u can verify by going to google play and download root checker or download whatever app that need root to function.
as for superuser app, sometimes that app just didn't show, in order for it to show is you have to manually flash it in clockworkmod recovery, just like nschiwy say. its actually fine to do that so don't be worried , as a precaution cek the MD5 to make sure you dont flash a bad zip file.

I have a bad situation here - my DINC is now stuck rebooting over and over into the white startup screen.
Here's what I did -
I copied to my SD card the 3.1.3 zip file that nschiwy linked in his post. Then I did this:
6.) Power down, then go back to hboot. Use the volume keys to select "Recovery", press power button to select and enter Clockwork. Now select "Install zip from SD card", then "Choose zip from SD card", then navigate to the Superuser zip you placed on the card in step 3. Select and load it. (NOTE: For those that don't typically load zips directly in CWM, use the trackpad button to make selections in CWM, the power button brings you back one menu.)
All this went fine. I used the Recovery command 'power off'. But then when I powered up it now is stuck in reboot. I did flash again from the zip file on the SD card, but same problem.
I see the troubleshooting tips posted here (I will copy it below). Pulling the battery didn't help. And I can't seem to reflash from the unrevoked app because my DINC just keeps boot-cycling...
What shoudl I do??
My phone keeps rebooting over and over and I can't do anything!
Pull out the battery, wait for 15 seconds, and put it back in and turn the phone back on. If it still keeps rebooting, pull out/re-insert the battery again, go into hboot (see above answer) and try the following steps. You can stop as soon as one of them works!
1. Restore a backup that you made in a previous step (if you have one).
2. Reflash the .img file from Step #8.
3. Flash the .img file here: http://dinc.does-it.net/wildstang83_...2_11232011.zip (note: this one will take you back to stock, so you'll have to start the guide over).

2. reflash clockwordmod but since ur phone keep bootloop, i think u gotta flash it in HBOOT.
3. reflash rom by going into clockworkmod recovery and install zip from sdcard.
again cmiiw.
btw can u go to clockworkmod recovery via recovery in HBOOT menu? if u can i think u can skip no 1 and 2 and just go install zip from sdcard in clockworkmod recovery menu.
but idk if its save to do that.

i think u can try it, before flash that stock rom.
do you have a card reader?
if u dont have 1, can you go to clockworkmod recovery menu?
if u can go to clockworkmod recovery menu, just go to mounts and storage and then mount USB storage plug the cable and voila it will detect ur sdcard.

Yes I can get to Recovery via HBOOT, and yes I can mount USB storage - that is great thanks! I will try to flash the 3.0.7 zip from Recovery. If it doesn't work then I can try and flash the Tip #3 zip file from Recovery.

great, just do that. i hope ur device would be working flawlesly again .
I have tried to install the 4EXTRecoveryUpdater.apk into my phone and it forced me to try the 4EXT Recovery Control for three days.
1. While I am trying to perform "online install" and "check for news", it required me to install Busybox (however I haven't rooted my phone).
2.The app just shows error and turn off and back to the main screen when I try to connect to the 4ext's server.
Can anymore answer what can I do? Should I just wait for the three day so that the 4EXT Recovery Control will expire?
Is there any setting I can do to fix the "error" while connecting to the 4ext's server?
Really Thanks a lot.

4ext updater is related to the recovery app. If you are not rooted and S-OFF, you won't be able to run an app that modifies a partition such as recovery. The app will not expire but won't work either...
As far as I know, the app can't gain access to the recovery partition without root privileges. I could be wrong though...

You can't install a recovery, CWM or 4ext, if you don't have permission to write to a partition. You can only get permission to write to a partition with root and S-OFF (AAHK) or an unlocked bootloader (HTCDEV).
The whole point of rooting (tethering and a couple other goodies aside) is to allow you to install a custom recovery and use it to install custom ROMs.

I'm out of thanks for the moment, but as soon as I get a spare I'll shoot you one to make up for it.
Although, I'm not seeing thanks from him on this thread...?

Reboot into boot loader, when in hboot select fast boot, plug phone into PC and open the adb shell / fast boot shell, type fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

Assuming you mean that you've installed the 4ext app, open the app and choose the option to install.

Oops, thanked you. I don't remember exactly what it's called. This is the 4ext updater app we're talking about, right? I know it's in there somewhere.

and that too, look the attached image, i have that build, so i just wanna change my recovery to 4ext
I can't read the first picture. Tap on the RC9 build of the second picture. That should download and install the recovery. You don't have that build. If you did it would be colored yellow.
Click on it. The app will do everything.
Edit: it seems that you already have it installed. Reboot into recovery.

just download the img supplied in the 4ext touchcovery thread here, you can find it in bananagranola's development list, download the img, and fastboot flash recovery nameofrecoveryimage.img

i only mentioned the fastboot flash cause that's the only way that app even worked for me, you first need a base 4ext recovery, (the one that can be flashed via the .img) and then update it via the app.
