[Q] New How-to Root, thread for T989-UVLE1 - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Could someone recreate the basic how-to-root for our latest iteration of Official software release?
I flashed back to stock, upgraded via Kies, and now I want SU back for TiBackup.
But I had a tough time putting the pieces together for a how-to together from all the loose threads. I've rooted and flashed a fair number of ROMs, surely I'm not the only one struggling.
I eventually managed, mostly with the help of this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=27307687&postcount=59
But ... I think he was wrong about the CWM version, as it appears to be 5.0.26
1)
[REF] Your One-Stop-Shop for rooting, roms, kernels and themes! only points to an outdated thread for how-to:
[HOWTO] ROOT T-Mobile SGSII via ODIN -- Updated Recovery
2)
(ODIN)(ICS)(LE1) SGH-T989_TMB_1_20120608172207_ugy1nehf4g
Has some files linked like su-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip what didn't work, reading further you get some direction/sidetracked around post 50 where it points over to Galaxy S II I9100G Android Development . Or 56 where most of the files you'll need are uploaded.
3)
[HOWTO] ROOT, Install ClockworkMod Touch Recovery & get into Download Mode for newbie
sends you to here if you just want Root w/o clockwork touch:
[REF] ROOT via Superoneclick ->
which sends you to here
[HOWTO] ROOT T-Mobile SGSII via ODIN -- Updated Recovery
etc etc.
It's all very confusing especially as we move from version to version; alot of the older methods become less useful or perhaps replaced with better tools.
Anyway, just a request for someone with some repute to handle. Good luck.

Thank you for posting this. I was gonna request but no time to look for all those download that i did trying to root the ics for tmobile s2... All im waiting is for a better way to root this phone since all the crap tmobilw loaded on this... Thanks once again

Installing EL29 stock root / fotakill.apk

Please be easy on me. I'm new to this whole rooting thing and have been browsing here for the past couple of days trying to learn as much as I can.
I have a Sprint E4GT and as many may be aware, ICS is being pushed out. I've already tried the manual update and ran with it for a couple of days, long enough to know I was NOT happy with it.
My plans are to root my phone with the ODIN SPH-D710.EL29_CL852097 (EL29 Modem/Kernel/ROM - Full Restore - Rooted) available elsewhere on this forum.
If I understand correctly, this is a completely stock ROM with the only addition of root / superuser access. Should I assume that means fotakill.apk is not installed and I will still receive OTA notifications?
Is installing the fotakill.apk application as simple as clicking on the file I have downloaded on my SD card or do I need to follow the procedures outlined in the fotakill threads available here on the forum?
Thanks in advance.
Bump for the noob.

Questions for 4.2 update for the Galaxy Nexus

Hey guys I just wanted to get a few answers from the Galaxy Nexus community! I'm new to the Verizon Galaxy Nexus and switched from the Thunderbolt!
1) Is it worth it to update from 4.1 to 4.2? I have my Galaxy Nexus but my battery isn't here yet from Amazon so I'm not able to check it's software. Also, is the update from 4.1 to 4.2 difficult to do? I read somewhere that you've got to be rooted and/or have the bootloader unlocked as well.
2) If I'm rooting my Nexus, I plan to use this guide I found from YouTube. Here are the links!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?annota...&feature=iv&src_vid=gyXMq4XFcKQ&v=oSmd9ZbUH50
http://galaxynexusroot.com/galaxy-n...iversal-guidegsmverizonsprintwindowslinuxmac/
I don't know if anyone has used this guide before, and I was curious if it does work. I do see that there are Multiple guides here on XDA but this seems to be the simplest one I found.
3) If I'm planning to run a custom ROM anyways, do I even need to update my software to 4.2 from the stock 4.1? And is Tajku and Yajku codenames for the 4.2 OTA update?
Wow I can tell you are really new to this.
1. First for Verizon galaxy nexus the official 4.2.1 update isn't out. The only way to achieve this is custom ROMs.
2. Although the galaxy nexus is the easiest device to root its still takes hours to learn the work arounds and learn about how it works.
3. Taiku and etc. Are codename for the devices. For example toro is Verizon's model and toroplus is sprints.
4. Their are plenty of videos and guides and all provide valuable information, its up to you to see which one you understand better.
5 I suggest using the galaxy nexus toolkit found in the development section. Its has everything you need to root and much more. It also has an option for one click root which automatically walks you through the steps but you really should try to learn how to push files over just in case something goes wrong.
6. Little tips. To root you have to unlock boot loader(wipes all internal memory like music and pics) custom recovery to flash root files and custom roms, and then a root app to allow access to all aspects of the OS like superuser or supersu(I prefer supersu). Download ROM toolbox for all in one tools and ROMs once you root. And finally when you flash a custom recovery, clockworkmod or twrp, make sure you have the latest one if you want to flash a 4.2 ROM. There is a multiple user feature in 4.2 that puts your files in a "/0/" folder which is fine but if you want to flash another ROM or go back to 4.1.2 it keeps creating "/0/" folders within itself and really screw up you internal memory. Newer custom recovery fixed this.
After you learned this look into how to make nandroid backups(for when the ish hits the fan you can go back to a good time) and custom kernels to get better performance and battery life.
Hope this helps and if it does just hit that thanks button!

[Q] Rooted Note 2 The Wrong Way ?

Hi Guys,
I am really new to the rooting customary process. Pardon me if there are information that I am not aware of. Okay, I always wanted to root to install apps that were restrictive to what I want and how to manage the phone properly. But I bought my Note 2 in Singapore, which is why I was hesitating as most of the guides were for AT&T and other American phone companies.
I was hesitating but a friend of me referred me to a very simple clip to root with using Odin
Needless to say, I rooted the phone and was able to install the couple of applications I wanted though there were a few I still couldn't find replacements for (Market Unlocker, AdAway).
However, I find myself not being to use ROM Manager to backup and change ROMS and being different with how normal people rooted. I think it has got to do with the how I had my phone rooted.
Please advice how I can place myself in what the general public is using as it would be easier for me to configure the phone if I were to try looking for assistance in the future.
Should I unroot and root using the XDA developer suggested way (I found the clip on YouTube but it wasn't for the firmware 4.1.2, thus I hesitated) ? After rooting my phone says its firmware is 4.1.1
Actually, if someone could also answer me whether
1) I can update my phone after rooting or do I need to unroot and update and root it again ?
2) Is the furthest update for Note 2 is 4.1.2 and in order to go for further updates I need to root ?
Again, pardon my knowledge on rooting. Thanks

Please do more research before doing anything but I would question if you have a custom recovery installed? You could use GooManager on the market to install a custom recovery (Open GooManager -> menu -> "Install OpenRecoveryScript") but check your phone model number first and make sure it matches the file you are about to flash. This would enable you to work with flashing and such. Also check your model number I believe the Verizon phones have locked bootloaders and don't know if your will or not (I believe this adds steps to flashing a custom recovery.) Wish I could be of more help.

[Q] MC2 to MK4 Question

Normally, if I do a search with creative enough verbage, I can find the answer here however right now that's not the case.
I have a 2 part question, but first, my device info:
- Currently I am stock rooted with TWRP recovery
- Model: SPH-L900
- Android Version: 4.1.2 on MC2 (both baseband and build)
- I was rooted when I first got the device, and had to unroot, update and reroot (using toolkit I believe)
#1. I have been seeing mixed information out there about this update (MK4) and was wondering if someone can just advise if KNOX is actually a part of the update (either OTA or LORJAY589's)? I would actually like to be able to have KNOX as it would be handy to use my device more for work.
#2. I am a fan of having my device rooted, personally I just like the ability to actually back it up fully, but there are other things that are nice too. The actual question is, if one of the updates does have KNOX in it, and its useable, is it still possible to have the device rooted?
If these could be answered, relatively simply, it would be greatly appreciated. I'm a bit of a n00b, but I have absolutely no issues with flashing my device using any of the standard methods, but a brief walkthrough would be appreciated (if only for the methods used).
Thanks!
Edit:
So here are the steps that I want to take, if someone can advise me if I'm being stupid based on my questions that would be great:
download:
MK4 4.3 SPH-L900 Odex Full Rom Rooted (thanks again LORJAY589),
Follow the following steps (Thanks cullenmq1):
1. Download full rom rooted (either deodex or odex)
2. Download wifi fix .rar
3. Go to recovery (doesnt matter both twrp and cwm work)
4. Make a rom backup just in case
5. Full wipe (not necessary but recommended, we dont need people bricking notes)
6. Flash full rom
7. Flash wifi fix through odin (must unpack rar first and mobile odin does not work with this)
8. MAKE SURE TO THANK LORJAY589 FOR HIS AWESOME WORK!
Then basically recover all my goodies with titanium backup / re-downloading... and from there I should have NO issues with WiFi or anything else as far as anyone here is concerned (if samsung screwed something up, I'm not about to blame a XDA Dev).
Sound reasonable?
umm... no
I'm not a super pro dev. but when I first read lorjays post. he was very specific about what to do. he said not to listen to anyone else's instructions but his own. that included flashing through cwm. not twrp. he said it doesn't work. and I saw for myself how many people where writing and asking questions about how to fix their phones because something went wrong. they forced him to post another comment saying do not listen to anyone elses instructions. follow mine and everything will work fine. so if I were you that's what I'd do. I know cause I did. and unlike a lot of dummy's who where asking for help. I had no problems after installing

SM-P600

Hi All
Let me start with few good things here You guys are amazing helping and providing tweaks for us:good:
I am Nexus user. I have Installed Custom Recovery, Flashed ROMs and rooted my Nexus 4 and Nexus 5. This is my First Samsung Tablet. I have waited enough for Nexus 10 (2). I finally bought SM-P600.
I was trying to find an Guide with links for Unlocking bootloader and Updating firmware and then flash Custom recovery for this but coudnt figure it out
I have been reading lots of things about Knox and counters related to it.
Can anyone Please help me find answers straight.
1) Any Rooting and Custom Recovery tools or ADB commands without Hitting the KNOX counter {Just In case IF I wanted to return it} If not then which one you recommend ?
By the Way I found few posts related to Rooting Which has confused me more. I used to use Chainfire SUROOT:
Rooting using CF-AUTO Root
Universal Root de la Vega
2) If I Root and want to use Stock ROM of SM-P600 will all apps work normally or any known issues with it ?
3) Is Odin any tool which everyone is taking about ? I am not sure about it Can you provide any links to its dev for more info. Found it about in a Post to return to STOCK ?
4) Are these ROMS and apps Odexed or Deodexed ROM?
5) Any Dependencies for Firmware and with any of the above questions. I mean In Universal Root I saw they were talking about certain version of firmware. Also Should I update the latest firmware and do a Nandriod backup ?
6) Also read that once KNOX counter goes up, I wont get any OTA ? My Plan is I will use it till next Nexus and will give it to parents with stock ROM. If I am using I can always use an Custom Rom and get updates. But for parents I want to return it to stock so that they can easily update when OTA is available.
I would like to make one more suggestion to MOD's Please Pin the Guides like the Rooting and stuff like Return to Stock which are quite common and useful so that its easy for newbies( aka for Samsung) like me.
Thanks
Zaib.
1. This is not really a single question with a single answer I think vaguely what you are asking is if you can root without tripping knox?
Nope. Not at this time.
2. If you use CF-Auto-Root you'll likely find that the vast majority of applications keep working without issue. Of those that don't, a handful you can manage back to a working state with various tweaks, but there are a few that are probably gone for good. You can basically kiss all the Samsung hub apps goodbye, these will start claiming they are not supported in your country even if they were working perfectly prior to rooting, some may continue working for a short time after but eventually something leaks and your access is cut. Screen mirroring will no longer work though this can be fixed with a small zip file flash. OTA updates are also gone.
Forget all the talk about 'triangle away' fixing any of this, it hasn't for me.
3. Odin is a tool that is able to flash firmware files or parts thereof to your device. Heimdall is an alternative suite of applications, while there is a GUI for it, it seems fairly hit and miss on Linux these days, I've never had much luck with it, on the other hand the command line tools work perfectly fine.
Once you trip Knox, there's no turning back! You won't lose your warranty in any meaningful way, but you may end up having to argue about it and drag in government regulators to get your tablet repaired free of charge depending on the dealer response.
4. I don't think this is particularly relevant to the SM-P600. My subjective opinion would be to stick with the bog standard Samsung ROM. If you want cool themes there are a multitude of launchers, Xposed takes care most other things you might ever care to tweak.
5. You have one choice. CF-Auto-Root. Backups are healthy.
6. True, but you'll still be able to flash via Odin so it doesn't really mean much of anything. Once you trip Knox, you can also kiss OTA updates goodbye as well.
