I just got a 32 GB micro sd card, and it is formatted FAT32. I wonder how people got hd movies in the device since the file system does not allow files bigger than 4GB.
I looked it up on wikipedia for exfat support but it turns out Android does not support it, ntfs-3g is dead slow so I did not even bother to check if it is supported. I mount my vision as flash drive a lot, so I cannot use ext3/4, btrfs etc.
Is there any other options that I missed, or I have to live with the limitations of FAT32?

Dudes, bit of a dilemma, if I format my 16Gb micro sd to NTFS and put it in my desire, the desire doesnt like it and it formats it as FAT32 .. which is ok, but I would very much like to tranfer files as big as 4Gb to the "removable drive" when using the desire as a USB drive.
Only trouble is you cant do that when using a FAT32 drive.
Is there a way of formatting the SD to NTFS but stil the handset will work with it.. Ie if its NTFS the desire will want to reformat it but if its FAT 32 the USB storage options only good for the odd small file.
Anyway around this so that the 16Gb SD card can be used on the desire (ie for apps and the like) but can also be used in the usb storage option to transfer large files of upto say 4Gb ?
bit of a catch 22
Why can't you copy 4GB files to the SD card? My External USB hard drive on my laptop is FAT32 and I copied the contents of my old external HD to it without issue (about 200GB). File system isn't the problem here
And no, you can't use NTFS on the Desire. Which is why it reformats the SD card once you boot Android
No!
You can copy more than 4GB to a fat32 filesystem because FAT32 partition can be larger than that.
But if one file is larger than 4GB then you can't copy it on FAT32, this is a limitation of FAT32 filesystem:
FAT 32 max file size= 4GB
this reason :
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080529220411AADT6Ut
you can move 200Gb worth of stuff but not a single file over 4Gb on a FAT32 file system (apparently)
you see my dilemma ? hehe most annoying
Biggest single file ive ever seen was about 3 GB. Never knew about the 4 GB limitation to Fat32 before. What files larger than 4 GB are there? 1080p files maybe?
.ISO Image files in this case
(work related not smut or pirated material before any suspicions are raised hehe)
I think u like to share Games with your Phone.
Why u do not extract the image files and install from the folder later?
After extracting u can copy the folder to sdcard ;-)
because once i extract the .ISO
the "Beach Hussys" .AVI file is still too large
... but seriously, there has been a few files ive had that are larger, I liked you idea tho x thanks. But there has got to be a way
Wasn't aware of the 4GB limit in FAT32, never had a file large enough to transport around!!
you can use gsplit or h-split!!! to split files on pc!!..
cheers dude that is good to know
but I really want the USB storage facility on the Desire to match having a USB key .. ie tranfer a 4Gb file the same as I would to my USB key (which is optimised and formatted to NTFS) Then I only have to take one around with me.
I have done this and it works (providing you have it plugged into USB as soon as you switch on with NTFS formatted SD in the phone) but then the sd cannot be used in that state to save apps to etc - so its one or the other it seems
ive used the sd formatted to ntfs and put it in my desire and plugged it into a usb straight away and it works - but if u dont do it straight away the handset says "SD card not formatted do you want to format it now" in which case it will format it to FAT32 or not let you use it as USB storage device at all.
hmmph !
i guess it shouldnt be hard as long as you compile the kernl with ntfs support or modprobe.
you can also split your files easily with winrar
What about exFAT? Can Desire read that format?
u can also use programs like winrar to split em in parts as well.. if its a movie u want to playback though, ;p its pretty impossible unless u split it urself with a movie editor..which aint a hard task..
Just use winrar archive the file to multiple archives, copy them over and unpack it

if you have a big sdcard and you transfer a lot of movies or files bigger than 4gb why don't you make 2 partitions on your sdcard....on FAT32 with the size you want on the desire and one NTFS for your data!!! i don't think it would cause any trouble. i might be mistaken though i never tried it. but for usbs works wonders
What about use partitions? Let's say 4GB FAT32 and 12GB NTFS... will it work?

I think it should work, but the Desire wouldn't read the NTFS partition, you could only use it for USB file transfer.
Mounting a Sandisk 64GB MicroSDXC card? Inserted it into the phone but it won't recognize?
64gb MicroSDXC card mounting information here for anyone looking (other sd card sizes also apply):
OK here's the rundown on this, you have a SD card you want to place files on, if you have a 64gig you probably have HD videos (larger than 4gb files) in mind but it's different for everyone. There are 3 major formats, FAT32, exFAT, and NTFS. These all have upsides and downsides:
FAT32 - is pretty much universally compatible with all devices, however it has a fatal flaw. The maximum file size of any 1 file cannot exceed 4gb, pretty worthless...
exFAT - does not have a file size limit, yet is incompatible with many devices. The Galaxy S III does support this natively, but to my knowledge every custom kernel except Adama 003 does not.
NTFS - this has the least compatibility probably because Microsoft created it and hoards the licensing rights (don't quote me on that ). However, if you download the app ntfssd from the play store, you can format your card to NTFS (this is the most painful part of the process since it requires the card to be plugged into your PC) and mount it with any kernel and any ROM! - This is the current format of my sd card right now and it works flawlessly.
Fellow n7100 owners and Devs. I have a large 64GB NTFS formatted SD card, for various reasons I need to use NTFS and not FAT, FAT32 or ex_FAT.
For some time I have been happily using the Paragon NTFS mounting program to automatically mount my external SD card on /storage/sdcard1 and it has been working well. That is unit I upgraded to a ROM that uses Android 4.2.X!
The reason for this seems to be that Android 4.2 breaks Dalvik-apps that mount file systems to be shared with other apps. [email protected]!!! See the post below for more details.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2106480
My questions is... Does anyone know of another way round this? I need my NTFS formatted card mounted as /storage/sdcard1 else it breaks a lot of other things for me.
Are there any 4.2.x roms that have been patched to cope with this change? My ROM of choice at the moment is JellyBam and I am currently stuck on version 4.1 because of this limitation. I could be persuaded to move to something else that would allow me to work around the issue.
Anyone????
Many thanks,
I downloaded & used a file called fat32format.exe on my 64 GB SD card. It was the only way I've found to use the card in my Note 2 GT-N7105 on a custom Rom.
Hello everyone, I know this thread is already present and I also red the info regarding with it, but it seems my problem is something I can't solve with the help of those previous instructions. I have an I idea how to solve it but I'm hesitant to do it because I don't know if it works, and I kinda scared to do it because I don't want to buy again another SD Card if ever the present one will break.
Problem: I have a torrent app in my Note II and I liked to use it always because it downloads fast, but the problem is that whenever I want to download files that is more than 4GB in size, I always receive an error that the file I want to download is to big for the file system; (file system limit exceeded), and I learned that this error occurs when my storage system is FAT/FAT32, then I read a thread in this forum that this will be solved by converting my SD Card's file system to NTFS and use Paragon NTFS Mount app so that my NTFS Card will be accepted by my phone, alas I did as what was instructed, converted my SD Card to NTFS, mount my card to storage/sdCard/extcard <---Created another path as it was said that using the default path would make it not work. But when I re-started to download files it fails to me again, the same problem encountered (file system limit exceeded). I even converted my SD card to exFat because I heard that this can handle large files, more than 4GB but also to no avail.
Solution(not tested yet): I am planning to make 2 partitions in my SD card, one partition would be fat32 and the other would be NTFS, and use also paragon app, so that when I insert my card to my phone, the phone will mount the FAT system to the fat32 partition and leave the NTFS partition alone and not be used.
Does this method of mine will work? Are there any ideas aside from what I had in mind that will also help me solve my little problem. I know that this problem of mine is not that big, and I can just refer it to other threads and the google but I want to know from the pro's and OP's here if my method is possible.
Thank you!
Kudos to all!:good:

You need to define a mount point like sdcard0 is internal sd sdcard1 is external sd fat32 partition sdcard2 as the ntfs partition which is really hard to do on a samsung based rom (even windows doesnt recognize the second partition on sd cards ) you can format the sd to ext3 or ext4 it's the best possible solution

I see, too bad, but thanks any way. Does the procedure in formatting my sd card to ext3 or ext4 is the same as when I format my card to fat32 other system, or would you use a program to do it.
Why are you using Fat32 or NTFS just format the SD card to ExFAT. No size limit and compatible with Note2 & Windows
I think the problem you are having is due to the torrent app you are using, it might be trying to use the internal phone memory as a temporary location for the file you are downloading. Try changing your torrent app
(I had this problem with the official utorrent app)
Stock OS
I'm recording video files but the problem is once I hit the 4gb limit of the SD Card, the video quits.
Couple of friends explained this is a FAT32 limit, so we tried NTFS and the stock OS doesnt recognize the card at all. Then we tried EXTFAT and while this allows files to be copied to the SD card over 4gb, the video recorder still craps out on me at 4gbs.
Anyone have any advice for how to get around this magical 4gb limit?
4GB limit is true about the FAT32 with individual file sizes. I believe if you have phone format your SD card, it'll be NTFS. Just need to change the camera to save to the SD card.

It does not format the card NTFS, and I still have the 4gb limit. I'm going to guess that even with extfat, the limit is the video recorder.
Even formatted in NTFS via a computer, it will not go over 4gb.
