Update (30.08.2012): Added Packages for LFB. And a beta package for LH7: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=30905004&postcount=180
Update (24.08.2012): Added Packages for BLG8, BLG9 and BLH1 (nfcmodSGS3_lockscreenBLG8_BLH1.zip, nfcmodSGS3_screenoffBLG8_BLH1.zip and nfcmodSGS3_stock_deodexed_BLG8_BLH1.zip). Update for LFB will follow soon.
In the Samsung Galaxy S3 Stock ROM NFC does not work when screen is off or locked. With this mod NFC also works when screen is locked or off.
There are two versions. The first just enables NFC, when screen is on, but it also worked when it is locked. Also with a PIN or Password-Lock everything is fine. But it disables NFC when the SGS3 is in standby and the screen is off.
The second version let NFC active all the time, even when the SGS3 is in standby and the screen is off.
Nothing else is changed in the behaviour of the NFC.
I also created a ZIP to go back to stock NFC. CAUTION: Use the stock zips only with the right firmware. The deodexed stock should work for all stock firmwares released yet.
All ZIPs have to be flashed with CWM. You should wipe Dalvik cache after flashing.
This mod works for at least for ALE8, ALF1, ALF2, ALF5, ALF6, BLG8, BLG9, LFB and BLH1.
For users of the AT&T S3 (SGS-I747), I created a version for this device too: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1740614. Please give me feedback, because I do not own this device and I cannot test the Mod on it!
For users of the Sprint S3 (SPH-L710), I created a version for this device too: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=28046812. Please give me feedback, because I do not own this device and I cannot test the Mod on it!

Incompatibilities: This Mod seems not to work with CM9. This mod does not work with LFB now. Maybe the BLG8 version works for LFB8 but I have to validate this or someone has to test it. I will provide an update for LFB the next days.

Are there any implications for battery life of NFC being enabled when the screen is off?
I've not yet tested it but I think so. But I think the effect on battery life shall be less then for example bluetooth activated all the time, because NFC uses less power. But it can happen your SGS3 comes near a NFC-Tag and an communication starts without your knowledge. But this NFC-tag have to be very near to your S3 and normaly it cannot do anything on your phone if you haven't configured it so... But is's up to you. I prefer the lockscreen variant yet.
Intresting

Thanks. I was thinking more of the impact of it always searching rather than an unintended connection. Will be interested to hear people's feedback though.

By disables it when the screen is off or in standby, does this mean it will use no power ie basically its turned off?
if so this is genius!
When you flash nfcmodSGS-3_lockscreen.zip NFC is disables when the screen is off. So NFC does need no power when the screen is off. But you also cannot use NFC with the screen off.
damn it... was waiting so much for that - you are my hero!!

As reported in multiple places on the forum, stock ICS ROMs do not come with the CRT-Off effect available, although the code is there and lots of existing mods already exist to be able to turn it on.
The implementation, however, contains a glitch and every once in a while the full screen image will blink right after the beam collapses.
I have managed to apply the fix to the Sammy's custom library that implements this, even though the source code is not available. (this wouldn't be possible without the good folks on CM9, though!).
The discussion that lead to this work can be found here, on the awesome JKay mod. BTW, if this fix is useful to you, do me a favor a buy that man's Deluxe app (it's really a favor you're doing to yourself, not me ).
For any ROM cookers, MOD developers, or end-users, I leave the patched file and a few instructions to make sure the provided lib only changes the flicker part. This is because I have performed the changes on the file shipped on XWLP9, and if other different files exist in other builds, it's more convenient to apply the fix there instead of using the lib from a different ROM and possibly lose some other improvements or fixes applied by Samsung.
Please check the Readme file in the archive for instructions on what to confirm and how to apply the change, and let me know if there's any question or if you have a different base version.
EDIT:
The library has been updated to handle CRT-On effect as well. You can safely replace it with the attached version, although you'll need to have a mod to activate the CRT-On effect as well.
If you want to install a standalone patch to activate this, have a look at this post and follow the instructions.
Technical notes
The code has been revised to display 8 frames when turning on - as opposed to 24 when turning off - in order to have a faster response. This is however still dependent on the time taken by the kernel to wake the CPU, before drawing can begin (currently about 1s). This delay will not happen if you don't wait long enough after turning off, as the CPU will not enter deep sleep.
Changes from Kamma have also been applied, in order to have a similar effect when turning On - "normal" screen colors instead of random color spikes. This might be barely noticeable due to the animation speed.
EDIT2:
No more issues with the library, it now works perfectly with Youtube playing videos, etc. Also the CRT-On effect is now very smooth (although faster than CRT-Off, on purpose).
Major kudos to rovo89 for turning an initial hack to fix the glitches in a polished final product!!!
Be aware that this just contains the library for the effects to work properly. You'll still need your ROM to be modded to activate them (instructions included in this zip file), or, better yet, install rovo89's Xposed Tweakbox module which overrides the behavior without replacing any files and should work even with non-stock roms.
Out of the box solutions for getting the CRT effects
Tweakbox by rovo89 (and a bit of help from myself) - works for pretty much all stock roms and derivatives, odexed or deodexed. It's even working for S3, since it contains a patched file from that model.
If you're using Deodexed XWLPG, you can also go to this post by The Undertakerr and fetch a flashable zip that contains everything that's needed to have CRT_On and CRT_Off effects always active.
Works great on Wanam V11.7 (LPD)

... Carried over from jkays thread,
You're right i didn't have any anything to turn crt on, i presumed it enabled it by default, since i flashed a similar fix from another thread and it enabled it straight off.
So hopefully jkay includes it in his mod and 'jobs a goodin'

Works perfect on Wanam V11.7.
Thank man!!
This is working great, also on LPQ. I also thought about patching the library directly, but didn't know where I could get the replacement code from. Great work!
I have been working hard today to bring some binary patching functionality to Xposed. Finally, I think I was successful. Learned some new things, like modifying a different process' memory. That will make it possible to patch the library on the fly, just if the MD5 sum matches etc. I believe this will make it easier to use for those who are not as experienced with adb/SSH/...

Wow, that would be yet another massive leap in your framework. Patching e.g. native libs on running processes from within java would really be awesome
If you've reached that stage already, you probably already know that "cat /proc/nnnn/maps" yields interesting information on where each library's segment is mapped. Other pseudo-files on that path also hold tons of information just waiting to be explored and hacked
Works perfectly well on LPF build.
I'm wondering whether its possible for you to make a flash able version?

Indeed, I'm using the files in /proc for patching. Plus "ptrace" to manipulate the /system/bin/surfaceflinger process, after I noticed that the library isn't used directly by any process started by Zygote. And for the patch file, I'm using bsdiff and a MD5 sum comparison.
If anyone would like to try out, here are betas of the upcoming Xposed framework and the Tweakbox. Installing instructions are in the linked threads. Afterwards, you can check "Patch libsurfaceflinger.so" in the Tweakbox settings, which will become effective after a reboot (but doesn't require replacing any files).
Please note that I have also added new helper methods for developers. Let me know in case setting the statusbar clock color is not working for you.

I've been testing your lib for 2 days now and as i told you in Jkay's thread flicker bug is gone
The only thing i noticed, happened only 2 times ,i had no crt off effect at all.
The screen locked as in stock.
Thank you for this
Please check and confirm guys..
Unlock screen, do not do anything. Just wait 7-8 Seconds without touching on the screen and then turn off screen, there will not be any CRT Off effect.
This, Tungstwenty, is a huge step forwards in development of the I9100. Even on Gingerbread the CTROff effect wasn't as beautiful as it is now!
CtrON is also available allready for ICS 4.0.3, only not for our device.
XDA member Kamma made it work on the Galaxy Nexus, and also posted the sources for it.
It involves changes in the libsurfaceflinger.so and in the services.jar.
Since you seem to be able to make changes in the .lib, my hope is on you, perhaps you could also bring the CRTON to the I9100 with ICS!

I cannot confirm the behaviour you have, I'm sorry. It's nothing new. The thing you describe also happened before the change made to libsurfaceflinger.so by Tungstwenty.
It even also happened on Gingerbread!
Sometimes the lockscreen also freeze for a few secs, but that's also not because of this change. You can read about it in the Siya kernel thread, seems to be related to the newest Siyakernel...

I cannot reproduce this also.
Tried just turning on screen and leave it alone, it will automatically CRT Off after 10s with my current settings. If I press Power 1 or 2 seconds before that, it still does the effect.
Also tried it with actual unlocking (going to the home screen), and effect also displays when turning off after 8s idle.
Does it always happen to you?

Do you know how this affects battery life? What about for the "off" one?
I used the Screenoff version for about a week and I didn't recognise battery drain. There should be an impact on battery but it is less than for example always active bluetooth.

Any update on the battery use with the screen off version? It'd be great to have the screen off version, but if it costs battery then it's almost as good just using lockscreen. Thanks to the dev for creating this, great hack
confirmed working with screen off zip. used v5 cwm to install. works perfectly and should have been like this out of the box.

Has anyone experienced an issue where the NFC just stops working? The check box is still ENABLED in settings, but the NFC tags are not being read. This happens with screen off or on. I have to disable and re-enable NFC in the settings to make it work again and be able to read the same tag. Then, after a period of time, NFC stops working again and i have to repeat the process.

CSROM & Graviton Support and Discussion Thread
This thread was created in response to a new xda initiative to reduce non-development related posts on development threads.
An added benefit of a thread here is that users with under 10 posts can get some help (and won't have to PM me).
I will maintain just one thread (hopefully this works) for both ROMs and all carriers to help preserve my sanity.
Please be sure to specify which ROM you are using and the carrier.
Below are some examples of common types of posts and where they belong
Q&A and FAQ Thread:
"What kernel gives the best battery life with this ROM?"
"Is Nova launcher compatible with this ROM?"
"The battery life for this ROM is off the chizarts!"
"The battery life for this ROM is total crap!"
"I just flashed this ROM and my GPS doesn't work. :crying:"
Development Thread:
"The new cellular data toggle isn't working (confirmed by another user)?"
"I keep getting FC's from SystemUI. Any thoughts?"
"I selected the green battery icons in Aroma but it installed the blues ones (I checked twice)."
"I just flashed this ROM and it bricked my device! "
"The battery life for this ROM is off the chizarts!
(see attached screenshots from Better Battery Stats)."
"The battery life for this ROM is total crap!
(see attached screenshots from Better Battery Stats)."
**********************************************
There are exceptions to the examples above. If you are using a port and your GPS doesn't work I need to know that.
It will probably take some time for threads like this to evolve, so I am definitely open to feedback.

Hey guys,
ATT CSROM v1.4 GS3 - Love the ROM so far, once I got a lot of my apps and data restored and a few issues with that worked out.
Kind of a newb to customs roms. This is the first one I have put on my GS3.
As far as I can tell I am using the CS launcher and would like to the change the wallpaper on my lock screen. However when I bring up the selection screen it only give me the option to use the stock wallpapers.
Can I just move an image to the stock location and have it appear? Or is there another option?

Yeah, it get's tough sometimes. That is why guys like you and the other people that test for me are a huge help. You guys make my life a lot easier by helping out on the threads.
It won't be long before I stop supporting the Atrix. I just don't have the time and I don't use the device anymore.
There is also a pretty good chance I will close up shop for my Sprint and T-Mobile ports for this device. There is not much interest for my ROMs in either forum. Probably not a bad thing since that will lighten my workload.

If you want to use anything other than a stock wallpaper for the lockscreen you need to have the Samsung gallery installed. The AOSP gallery is not compatible with the lockscreen for pics, or other images on your device.

Just a mention,
I installed Light Flow Lite yesterday and toyed around with it. Long story short it broke the AOSP lock screen. By broke I mean any time I would put my phone into sleep then wake it up and interact with any function of the lock screen it would become unresponsive and reboot (fast reboot I think).
I was finally able to get out of it by bringing the notification window down and getting into settings. Disabled the lock screen and the device was fine. Uninstalled Light Flow and wiped the data with TB, but the lock screen is still broken. Haven't tried the touchwiz lock screen for fear of it being broken too.
Aside from that the batt life is amazing and everything works wonderfully. Even got another gallery installed via Aroma and can change the lock screen wallpaper (not that im using a lock screen right now).

Based on what I have read on this apps web site it wasn't meant for an aosp rom. That sounds like a matter of app not being compatible with the rom so I would say not the roms fault.
Glad you were able to get things back to normal.

You are the second or third user that had this happen. I will add a warning to the OP.
If I remember correctly, Light Flow works fine with the stock lockscreen. But you might want to wait until someone that actually uses it chimes in.

Based on what I have read on this apps web site it wasn't meant for an aosp rom. That sounds like a matter of app not being compatible with the rom so I would say not the roms fault.
Glad you were able to get things back to normal.

Thanks, I couldnt really find anything else that mentioned having that kind of trouble, but it definitely makes sense. And I wasnt blaming it on the ROM, just saying it was a side effect.
Maybe the mention will keep someone else from breaking their lock screen.
Again, thanks for the great rom!!

Being that I'm a noob (<10 posts), I can't post this in the actual ROM thread (mods, please move if you deem it appropriate).
I wanted to ask if there was a way in Google Edition 4.3 to change the clock settings to *NOT* display the hour in bold font?
Is that functionality available and I'm missing it in the settings?
Thanks yeahmann for putting that together and to the entire XDA community for all the hard work!.

As far as I know you can't change the look and feel of the widget in 4.3, however you can always install Cyanogenmod cLock widget where you can customize it. Hope this helps.

It does help -- thank you.
I actually ended up flashing CM-10.2 because of the availability of better config options and am so far loving it.
Thanks again and best wishes!

Whenever you get a chance can you please let me know how's CM 10.2 working for you so far? I mean can that be used as a daily driver with major things (GPS, Bluetooth, NFL, camera etc) working without any issues. If so please let me know which nightly did you flash.
Thanks.

So far, CM 10.2 is rock-solid. I flashed The Sept 5 Nightly. Reason being - Friday gives me 2 days if something doesn't work.
I tried AOKP (too many options for me -- never thought I'd say that) and both Virgin and 'stock' GE (4.3) ROMs (a bit too stock for me).
I have so far set up email (GMail and Work using K-9 + Invitation Processor) and customized some options/appearance (cLock is da-shizznit). The camera works perfectly. I have not set up Bluetooth and not used GPS, yet, but will try both tomorrow on my way to/from work. One thing that I still need to figure out is the file-system layout inside Android (i.e. /storage/0 vs. /storage/legacy, etc...) as I'm apparently using 7.4GB out of 9.6GB available. This is probably because the stock T-Mo version left most of its guts behind and/or I incorrectly cleaned the device after having flashed all the ROMs.
One thing that I've noticed (with all the ROMs, except stock T-Mo) was that when you press the power button to lock/shut-off the screen, it ends up shutting off like an old-school TV. With the stock version, it would go dark seamlessly.
Regardless, I really enjoy having this phone now that I flashed CM on it. The fact that they provide an 'update-CM' option directly inside the settings is awesome in its own right. I'll update this thread once I give GPS and BT a run (can't promise I'll run TV apps on it, though -- that's not my cup-o-tea).
Best!
if you find certain things to be a bit buggy on CM, give Virgin Rom another try. the hardware elements of the phone work flawlessly. in an ideal world, someone would use Virgin Rom as a base and "Cyanogenize" it so that more things were customizable, such as Quick Setting toggles. CM is great, but the nightlies don't have the stability that the GE Roms have, obviously.
Thanks for your inputs...I guess back up of your old Roms may be eating up your internal space (if you have backed them up )...the old tv animation is the crt animation which Google introduced in ICS 4.0

Aaah! Good to know (about the TV animation).
I haven't backed up my old ROMs, but I'll definitely investigate space usage once I find some time.
Tested GPS and BT this morning: played a few songs over the car radio streaming over BT - awesome.
GPS is working good, too. I get a lock within 10 seconds of starting any app requiring GPS.
Thanks to all!

Even I flashed the RC2 last night. Using it for a few hours only, but it's rock solid as you mentioned.

Hello!
My name is KJT (on the net) and I have a T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy SIII t999. When it came to me it had stock 4.0.4 Android. First thing I did was Root/CWM recovery it so that I could Wi-Fi Tether and have a custom recovery.. I found nothing wrong with the phone and it did everything I needed it to and more! At the time I wasn't willing to customize my firmware because I didn't really care.. Two(almost 3) years passed by and so much has changed in the modding community. So I checked on faster ROM's for my device and found so many to pick from! I didn't know what to pick.. I tried a couple of ROM's, but I found myself going back to SlimKat 4.4.2.build.3-OFFICAL-3061 and WOW was I surprised at how the look and feel made my phone like new again.. I now say to my friends that I upgraded my S3 into the S4.. Not really, but its "like" I did, with a software update. Heheh..
Anyways back to my device.. After updating to SlimKat I found some things a little weird with my phone, but nothing I couldn't figure out (except one thing that I will get into a little later). There was a couple things screwy with it and I had to research for a couple of days to find the answers. After fixing the small issues I wanted to fix the CPU issues and why it would throttle when I played a game longer then 5mins.. I found the option and disabled it, but it seemed to drain my battery way faster with it off. I then looked at new kernels for my phone and what would work good for battery and for performance. I found KTweaker and realized that installing SlimKat changed my model number to Samsung-SGH-I747. So I installed the Kernal (3.4.82-cyanogenmod-g9a7e2a6 [email protected] #1 Sun Mar 9 16:16:31 MST 2014). It seemed to work really well, but I see the LED blinking Blue on bootup(and stay blinking) every time I restart my phone now after installing this Kernal. So I tricked the LED to turn off by using Light Manager's test notification option. Once I turn on test and then shut screen off, the LED turns to the color I was testing in Light Manager and the LED turns off.. So that is the trick, but if there is anyone that can help me understand or fix the Blue LED that stays blinking after boot up, I would really appreciate it. I have no other apps that control notifications, and I have tried turning off all LED options, but nothing seems to work. The only thing I can do is trick the LED..
So after that, I decided I would try and find another Kernel/Tweaks, but after flashing Xtweak it seems to be running a bit smoother. I am stuck no with only one issue and that is the Blue LED flashing at boot and staying on until I trick it. KTweak app (Not XTweak) that is listed in the menu had some crazy OC settings and profiles. Now I think I am set with my CPU issues. I played my game Order and Chaos Online(GAME PLAY) for 4 hours yesterday with no lag and the CPU never throttled.
So my only problem is the Blue LED at boot.. I hope to figure it out and I will report back if I find the solution. Thanks for reading.

::UPDATE:: March 01-06, 2014...
------------------------------------------
First off the LED blue light has been fixed with a format of the internal memory and flashing a new rom. I believe the problem was with Slimkat ROM and Ktoons kernel on build 3.
I have SlimKat Build 4 now after some internal data lose(system/data/cache and most of my personal data from the last month... lol). I recommend not trying to fix your phone at 3:am and tired.. I had a back up from last month, but I know I lost a lot of other stuff I can't remember, but I think it was a good thing, because my phone is now running faster and with a lot more space on the internal hdd. So I guess I did a system restore with updating to Build 4. I am really enjoying build 4 and haven't come across any problems. I have not installed KToons kernel yet, but he has updated it and I will try it out when I have more time. I will update later. Thanks for reading..

If you don't need led
Go to
Settings→Display→Light Options→Notification Led
And disable it.

I do need the notifications turned on, but when ever I restart my phone the blue LED light(top left cover on face of device) continues to stay pulsing way past boot. I use to see it only pulse a few times at boot and then it would stop and load the OS. It only started happening right after I flashed the KToon kernel. I love the kernel and it make my device so much better then it was before with the SlimKat kernel.
I also have tried many different steps to stop the pulse at start up, but only found that if I trick it and put on another LED notification, then it stops after I make it change to the other notification.. Its almost like it gets stuck on the notification for boot up. I uninstalled all apps and also reformatted.. I was thinking of another kernel install, but have not found a better kernel(even with this issue) then KToons..

I had the stock for over 2 years and wanted something new.. More performance and battery life. This kernel has done that with the KTweak settings I have.

EDIT: What I really want is what this kernel is giving me, its just the led problems I need to solve... lol

Yup, i've been flashing on Galaxy's since the S2. After the S2, Samsung released identical hardware for all carriers, including the international edition. The only software you had to worry about is recoveries, Baseband, and if on T Mobile, the TW version if you wanted Wifi calling.

My wireless calling works fine and I am on T-Mobile network. So I guess I did everything correct.. lol
Still trying to figure out the Blue LED at boot....
UPDATE!!!
Ok, so I found out that it was the Ktoons kernel that was giving the notification Blue LED at start and wouldn't go away. I guess it was set to notify at start, but then never turned off. This is now fixed because of a flash to the new build 4 of slimkat.
So the issues that I was having before with the LED was only because of the kernel I flashed on a slimkat rom. It worked great, but had the LED issue.
::UPDATE::
Ok, now to talk about my new updated build 4 slimkat device.
