Hi,
I read somewhere that you shouldnt play games on your hox while its charging, (or any device for that matter) but then i thought there cant be any truth to that or you wouldnt be able to use your laptop while its plugged in.
I normally only charge my phone at night and while its charging i generally play a few games or browse the web in bed before i go to sleep (this can sometimes last several hours if im really into a game).
Recently ive been getting the green/red LED notification light, which informs me that my phone is too hot, at which point i pull out the charger, wait for it to cool down and plug the charger back in. This is now becoming very common, and i get the LED notification after about 10 minutes.
Have i ruined the battery?

It is not recommended to overheat your HOX ... the processor is safe, but not the other parts of the phone. Just dont do it until we dont receive the next update (2.xx.xx) that solves the overheating problem (thats what i read from guys that already thesting this leaking unofficial update in a custom ROM.
Just dont do it if you want to be on the safe side
Ah that makes sense. My old phone definitely overheated and developed yellow spots. I'd game a lot with it plugged in too

Is there any official word from HTC that says shout battery charging when running games or navigation software?

This is what I would like to know.. if we have an automatic protection to prevent the battery from over heating by stopping the charging process and if we also have no word from HTC about it so I have every right to consider myself in the safe zone.. if something happens to my device because of overheating no one can say it is out of warranty
My concern is using phone as navigation or for gaming during charging - I can't imagine this phone working whole day as navigation because of overheating of battery... So I cannot do what I want with my phone because:
1. Battery drain is heavy during nav/gaming, so I have to charge, but:
2. Charging when nav/gaming will cause overheat and it will be stopped, so I will not be able to use phone as I want
As stated above it would not be advisable to play while charging.
Sad isn't it? The battery drains pretty fast when you play some GPU intensive games, and you end up not enjoying
If you can get a good kernel and manage your battery wisely there would be great improvement on your gaming time.
If you can play while unplugged with lowest brightness that would definitely help.
my 2 cents
If I can play in my mind I will not drain phone battery...

when playing need 4 speed shift today i noticed something interesting... its supposed to "prevent your phone from sleeping" obviously so gameplay is not interrupted with screen shut-offs. So when i was playing the first time my battery was prolly between 60~70% at work off the charger of course and screen stayed on without a hitch... when i was playing it again this evening battery was around ~40% at home off the charger and the screen would dim like if i was in the browser for instance then a few moments later shut off like normal... but when the phone is plugged into the charger it doesnt exhibit this behavior... With that being said, Im assuming wakelock only engages if the battery has x % remaining or higher or is charging? Anyone know where in the system files to find that value?
For the past 2 nights i have been experiencing this
had 50% power left the night before...
after 6 hours sleep
phone is out of battery @@
Now that aint right, im guessing something is running under locked screen and iono what!!! but i always jump out of any program when im about to sleep too, so it cant be because of that
In the past, i could have standby time for a long period especially after one night. But the past two days when i woke up, it always ran out of battery!! Also when i charged my phone to full life, i sometimes come back after a hour or two to find it dead!!!
This has never happened before and im wondering what could be the cause of it.
In the past i could leave my wifi, bluetooth, location on and it would still last overnight and i wasnt running any program
It cant be because of alphajax right? I mean i did install that two nights ago :\
That is really weird, which phone do you have? I have the hd7 and get 2 days between charges most of the time. Have you tried uninstalling alphajax to see if that helps?
I use a HTC mozart 7
Im gonna try uninstalling a few apps to see if that helps or switch to my secondary battery pack
just to let you know i watch videos before i go to sleep and because its get so hot it drains battery faster, even though i had 50% after I finished watching it went all out in about 8 hours of sleep.
That sounds highly likely, i was playing a game before that, then left it alone for 1 hour, check still had 50% battery, and then went to sleep
woke up with a dead phone
I will confirm that when I have overworked my focus, ie several hours of video and games, the battery can get very hot and if I wait until I get the low power warning, plugging it into my laptop USB can't keep up with the drain.

ok this is ridiculous
in 3 hours i lost 30% power on standby
ITS ON BLOODY STANDBY!!! lol i cant figure out whats causing it. I didnt use the phone for anything at all then put it to charge till 100%. Started counting down time...
If I were you and you dont mind loodsing games aves etc, Id try a hard reset and if that doesnt solve the problem go to LG and ask them to fix it if there may be a fault.
Sorry I cant help further and Goodluck!

I've had this issue as well. This has been going on for months for me. Before NoDo and the pre-update.
Perhaps the battery isn't calibrated properly. Mine shoots down to 50% over the day but sometimes an hour or so after I hit fifty the battery goes critical then dies.
Battery Drain
I have the Samsung Focus. Pre NoDo I could get maybe 18 hrs in standby, and charging from USB on my computer was not happening. I had to plug it into the wall. If I actually used my phone for maps, calls, web or whatever I would get about 10 hr's depending how "how much I used it". This was with EVERYTHING turned off. Bluetooth, location services, feedback, anything and everthing I could disable. After NoDo, I get about 2 days, and now it will charge from my computers USB. Go figure.
All I can guess is there was some sort of corruption in the ROM.
Just a side note, does anybody know what "NoDo" stands for???
Answer: No Donuts
Before the February and March updates, I woke up one day to see my battery had drained from 100% to 0% in about 6 hours of sleep. After recovering from an angry awakening next morning, I paid a lot of attention to how the battery was draining. So I charged up to 100%, went to work on the tube as I always do, and noticed how after about 45 minutes, the battery was down to 50%. That was just some music playback and checking a few mobile websites.
In the end I remembered the day before I had installed two applications, one of them being Lyrics and the other one being a BPM (beats per minute) detector for getting the tempo of a music track. I decided to remove that application and, voilá, the battery drain stopped. I would have uninstalled the Lyrics app but this was already taking me to a decent power usage state, so I stopped there.
If I were you I would check recently installed apps to make sure you don't have a power drainer that's magically working in the background when you put the phone to sleep.
Did you disable feedback in settings. That extended my battery life considerably

I know what your going through, but i found the solution.
Your mobile data is constantly running to check for updates on the game and push notifications. Disable data connection whenever your not using it, and i swear you will see a massive improvement. I have a htc trophy and its notorious for its bad battery. I used to only get 4-6 hours out of it, and now i get 12-14, with WiFi.
That reminded me.... alphajax uses push (although i had disabled it) to notify the user if the other player had made a move...
It all seems LOGICAL that alphajax is the culprit here....
but i also have lyrics, how does that app affect the battery???
Hey this is my first post so if this question has already been asked I apologize ahead of time. Well I put alot of different themes and roms on my phone, but recently I have been noticing that my battery will start losing charge on when I have plug into the computer and wall outlet. I have not been able to find a fix for this anywhere. Please help!! Thank you everyone on here you guys are awesome
I believe only the case the battery drains faster the charging speed would be when you play games (lots of cpu + screen). It happened one time when I played Angry birds games...
But, even you installed thousands of apps, usually battery would be fully charged within maximum 3~5 hours and this speed is enough to overcome the battery drain speed. Please check below thread and I added some comments in the last post.

Thanks kobridge I will check it out. But yea the battery drains even when I just have it on the charge idling its pretty weird hopefully I fix it cuz I already voided the warranty a long time ago lol
I think it's almost usb cable problem (charger).
I had this issue before. The generic charger would only charge when screen was off. Bought a new charger and charges fine, even when playing games(just gets hot if playing games).

so I got Need for speed for my Xperia S (great game by the way, would recommend) the only problem is it is un UTTER battery drain, I'm talking rapid draining even having the screen brightness on low. Do you think the battery is getting damaged by my heavy use in this way? I'm charging it to full, playing it for a good hour and then it needs to be recharged so I plug it in.
cheers

No you are not damaging the battery. Hd games drain your battery. Dont worry it happens with every phone. Please post questions in question and answer section.

How about if I play while the phone is charging, does this affect it in any way, like how with a laptop you should take out the battery if its plugged into the wall to extend the battery's life?

No it wont affect your battery...I have been doing that for the past 10 months

It's a difficult question. From one perspective it's better to keep the phone plugged in because a Li-ion battery has a finite amount of recharging cycles. The worst thing you can do is to completely discharge your battery, then completely charge it again and so on several times. Which is what you've been doing and these are wasted recharge cycles.
But constantly charging your phone will also make it hotter and that combined with an intensive game will make your phone too hot, which might result in some components overheating and a reduced life expectancy.
So I'd advice to keep your phone plugged in if possible, but don't play for hours.
When you compare to laptops, it's indeed better to remove the battery when you're plugged into the wall (keep in mind that the battery doesn't lose its charge though, there's nothing worse for a Li-ion than being completely empty). But there's no phone you can run without a battery so you can't do that . It's also a question of luck. I never remove my laptop's battery and it still easily lasts 2 hours after having it for 2.5 years and using it a LOT (when plugged in mostly). It was just a cheap laptop with a 6 cells battery. Most of my friends that have a laptop that old or older (and also more expensive) can barely keep it charged for more than 10 minutes now.
No,
nowadays you can't damage your battery in any way as I know.
But it is recommended to charge your phone to 100% and turn all notifications off then let it on sleep mode till your Phone is going off by itself.
This doesn't improve the Battery lifetime or something like that but it is recommeded
thanks for the advice everyone
Hi. Please excuse my English. My HTC 10 remains warm as long as it is plugged in, that is, even several hours after the green led started to flash. All my previous phones aborted the charging process and cooled down after the battery was fully charged (Of course, I use the bundled charger). This is very concerning. Does it mean that the phone overcharges? I always turn my devices off before I plug them in and begin to charge them. Thanks.
I think this pretty normal. What means warm to you? 40degrees celsius on charger is normal for this device. It does not matter if you charge while turned off as the quickcharge technology works either way and will not quick charge after reaching 80% load. I recently read an article of someone who charged his 10 with an google pixel c charger ( usb c 5v, no quick charge). His 10 loaded normally until 100% but charging procedure did not stop and phone shut down after reaching 50degrees battery temp... maybe your charger is faulty!? How fast does it charge?
I can tell you that my phone tends to get warmer (keep in mind I said warmer, not hotter) when it is plugged in and I am doing stuff (Youtube, browsing, etc...). It will most likely keep warm unless you are not doing anything. I try to not charge my phone overnight since I usually get up to go to the bathroom or get water in the middle of the night, and since I only got like 2-3 hours of sleep left that's when I plug my phone in. You say you turn your phone off when your phone is charging so I'm unsure why it would get hot.
Clarifications
Thank you very much, xperia x root.
By "warm" I mean that the actual phone (not the charger) is above room temperature, unlike any of my previous phones, indicative of redundant electrical activity, which, to my fear, might be overcharging. This is why I wrote that I turn my device off before I charge it: it means that the phone does not consume power, and thus that there is no charging-discharging routine going on. I am yet to measure my phone's charging time.
There's really no need to turn off your phone every time you charge it. My phone gets slightly warmer when quick charging compared to using the regular charger from my previous M9. If you Google "overcharging cell phone", you'll find so many articles about how it's a myth because the phones are smart enough to know when to stop taking a charge when it's completely full.

Yeah i meant the phone too. This phone is always above room temp . Nothing to worry about. While Im typing here(chrome desktop modus) my device battety temp is 40degrees. While using phone during charging it even gets 46 degrees warm, before throttling very hard. I'll watch temp today when charging after reaching 100% and post my temp.

Thanks, xperia x root. When the phone is off, it should, eventually, reach room temperature. That's why I fear that my phone's warmth indicate overcharging. I completely understand that it is unnecessary to turn the phone off while charging, but if it is on, you just cannot know if the heat is due to overcharging, or some operation of the processor. This is why it would be most helpful if you would, only once, for the sake of our experiment, charge your HTC 10 today while it is turned off. And I think you shouldn't watch the temperature, but simply touch it with your hand and feel if it is in room temperature or not. And it would be very helpful if you examine the phone's warmth sometime after the green light is on -- one hour, for example -- to be sure that the phone had enough time to cool down. Thank you very much!

My HTC 10's charging time looks normal, on par with what you see and hear from other consumers and reviewers : it took 1:33 hr to reach 100% from 10%.
