Htc desire Rooting.... - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi.I'd like to ask about the desire rooting proccess...I tried to root the phone from a stock android 2.2 rom with unrevoked 3.22 always to a failure with the CID error on windows 7 and on XP.
Then i tried with the 3.2 version ...i think it succeeded on the XP as i did show the clockwork mod screen BUT the power button is not working while in recovery...it just turns the screen on and off....Has anyone encountered this before? Any suggestions ?i am asking ahead as i don't wan't to brick the phone just yet....Thanks...

to be fair a few of us have probably have encountered this, but many have managed to figured it out:
select with trackpad within recovery.
the power button works just fine...to turn the screen on and off...

Volume up and down buttons work as they should...also the track pad....but i cannot select anything as the power button does not work....
I also flashed clockworkmod 5 through rom manager...now the power button swiches between the blue menu and the hat....

1. uninstall rom manager, it's a problem with this phone.
2. when you say the trackpad works as it should, are you sure you're pushing the trackpad to select an option within recovery...
if you're s-off i recommend switching to 4ext touch recovery, install the app and from 4ext.net. you won't run into this problem (i.e. you can select things by touching the screen )

True story...just installed 4ext touch recovery and works as clockworkmod should...thanks.

[Q]Recovery Issue

Hello all,
currently running Modaco's rooted official fro-yo update (free version, not kitchen)
so yes i am already root.
i have a hboot 0.83 desire with the SLCD screens. i have used the patched image and used unrevoked method to root as modaco's method would not work.
i have 2 problems and any information would be grateful.
1)recovery issue
while holding down vol down + power and then selecting recovery to boot into recovery sometimes i will get into clockwork recovery and other times the phone will just hang on a white htc screen (not the black one when using wrong recovery!)
it is lucky when i do get to boot into recovery using this method.
i have tried connecting up the desire to the pc and running unrevoked again (using ubuntu 10.04) to try load the recovery menu again. same results though. sometimes i may get lucky and it will boot into recovery. a lot of the times it will just hang on a white htc screen for ages and not boot into recovery. this is frustrating when i try to change roms.
for example im having an issue with this current rom so i flash leedroid. all respect to him his rom is good. but i think its loaded with a lot of apps which i dont require.so i require to boot into recovery and adb remove the applications from the system partition and the data partition.
2)problem with modaco's rom
maybe not the right place to post this and i would receive better help at modacos website.
never the less someone maybe able to help me.
flash player doesnt seem to work at all on this.i visit the flash player site. it will usually tell you and show you a flash movie to say flash is installed or if not will tell you to download and install, in this situation pointing to market.
at this stage when it points to market i get a message saying "item not found"
so this means i dont have access the the full market for this device.
i could on the other hand unzip leedroids great rom and remove all the apps that i'm not intrested, resign and flash, but again i have issues with recovery.
any help would be appreciated
Thanks in advance
Hey,
There's quite a few people having the same issues.. some say it's because of LeeDroid ROM that's causing the issues, others say it's not. I for one am having the same issue only after I flashed LeeDroid. Since then I've flashed Open Desire and still having the smae issue.. never had the issue when I originally flashed Cyanogen.
However, someone noted that when booting into recovery.. do not touch any buttons or press anything until AFTER the SD check is complete. I tried this method.. and Clockwork Recovery loaded up just fine. It's not a corrupted image issue because sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.. there's some sort of conflict somewhere.. that's my guess.
have you tried perma flashing a recovery using Unrevoked?
Thanks for the replies guys.
@Quazis
intresting that you mentioned leedroid. i too had flashed that and to think of it i bleieve i've had problems since then when i wanted to revert to modaco's 2.2 official fro-yo release.
thanks for a reply to the matter. when i boot pressing volume down and power into the bootloader, then select recovery from there, press power to select and then i do not press any buttons until recovery is installed. but i will try again.
@LennyUK
whats perma flashing?
i have flashed using unrevoked and i have to select a custom recovery image and select the SLCD image.
could you please explain further?
i have also tried to redo this process when booting into recovery failed using other attempts.
thanks for your help guys
i may create a gold card and flash the generic RUU with hboot 0.83 onto the vodafone branded desire and then unrevoke that in an attempt to fix the problem
hi guys,
hallo to everybody, greats job here!
I'm just wondering witch is the right recovery image to use with unrevoked 3.1, I tried to use the default one and when I go into recovery mode my screen become black and I must to remove the battery before going on.
someone can please help me?
regards
Miniera77
Well with Unrevoked once used you boot holding volume down and power
It then opens the HBOOT screen, wait for it to do its weird loading thing then select "recovery" using volume keys and hit the power button, the phone should then say "HTC" and should then proceed to boot into your recovery (I use Amon-Ra this way and then clockworkmod if I need it via rom manager).
I have not had any issues getting into recovery this way at all.

Hi Lenny,
thanks a lot for your answer!
...my problem is that when I do the procedure you've written:
- root by unrevoked
- holding volume down and power
- waiting till SD checks
- select Recovery by power button
...I can see the HTC screen and after that everything is black, the phone power off by itself and I cannot see any Recovery Menu. Than I must to remove my battery to be able to use again the phone.
I've tried once with clockworkmod recovery image and once with Amon-Ra but nothing change... I really don't know how to going on!
grrrrrrrrrrrrrr
thanks a lot!
Miniera77
Miniera,
I think you have the SLCD version of the phone. If you're using the stock image, it won't work cause that's for AMOLED screens.
If you goto the Desire development section, there's a tutorial in there how to root SLCD version of the Desire with HBOOT 0.83. See what you can find in there and I'm sure you can get it to work
Or re-use Unrevoked, it has the SCLD compatible version of clockwork now.

me too lol
i will try unrevoked again (for linux) and see if this looses my recovery screen blank or not. if it does i will flash the SLCD.img version again.
again could someone explain what prema flashing is please? lol
well just flashed
http://android.modaco.com/content/h...-froyo-pre-rooted-no-hboot-with-radio-deodex/
and everything works fine. except the recovery issue caused by the leedroid rom.
it took me 15 attempts to boot into recovery
got there and flashed this. and everything flies. sadly i had to reboot as i wanted to adb push some files from another build into this and well it took me a further 7 attempts to boot into recovery.
wish there was a fix for this

flash using the SLCD clockworkmod.img file found in the 0.83 hboot root guide in the development section. you will then see the menu
Just to update if anyone else reads. flashed the WWE 2.1 T2 for hboot 0.83 on and then re-rooted. fixed the problem and roots into recovery every time.
leedroid blames on bad nand sectors. i doubt a new desire will come with such a defect. but im not going to insult his work because its good, maybe not for me but its still damn good!
in the end ive solved my problem

[Q] Am I missing something? Unrevoked NOT working... how else can I root/clockwork??

I've been a Samsung Epic 4g user for quite a while now, and I just got my first Evo yesterday...and I'm trying to root/install Clockwork Mod so I can install Cyanogen Mod7 on my Evo.
I'm following the instructions found here:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=HTC_Evo_4G:_Full_Update_Guide
And everything is all fine and dandy... again, I'm not a TOTAL noob, i'm just new to the Evo. I have downloaded all the necessary files.
I load up unrevoked on my computer... I enable USB Debugging on the Evo.... and start the process.
It goes through the entire process (about 2-3 minutes), it restarts the device... it says everything is done and has finished successfully.
However, after that... I shut down the Evo, and hold POWER and VOLUME DOWN (because isn't that how we boot into recovery on this phone?) and that does NOT take my to the Clockwork Mod recovery screen...it's the stock recovery.
I've tried it 3 times now, and have been unsuccessful each time. I tried BOTH unrevoked versions.... both unrEVOked 3 and also unrEVOked forever (not sure what the difference is anyways), and both looked exactly the same and gave me the same failed result.
What am I missing here? Is there a different way that I can root and install Clockwork mod WITHOUT using that unrEVOked method? Because for whatever reason, it's not working for me and I've been DYING to try out a custom ROM for this fancy shiny white Evo of mine that I just picked up yesterday.
When u did the unrevoked3 did u install the custom drivers to ur computer and delete HTC syn
Also u can download quick boot from market its free. Then click on app and select recovery
Holding volume down while hitting power won't bring you into recovery. That brings you into hboot (the white screen). If you are fully rooted it should say SHIP S-OFF at the top. From that screen use the vol down to select recovery from the list and hit the power button to select. That should bring you to clockwork, assuming unrevoked worked and you are rooted.

I was used to my Epic I guess. With that, you hold the buttons and it boots you directly into Clockwork, you don't have to select "RECOVERY"

[Q] Make ClockwordMod complete backup?

Hi,
I recently rooted my phone through VISIONary+ r14 and today downloaded ROM Manager. I flashed ClockworkMod Recovery, but I can't back up my current ROM (stock/branded). I want to make a complete 100% backup of my current phone to be able to restore later if I need to.
However, I don't know how to do it. There is a 'Backup current ROM' option on ROM Manager, but whenever I do it my phone restarts showing the black screen with the phone and the red Caution exclamation mark + triangle, so I have to hold Volume Up and the Power button to restart my phone.
What do I do?
Also, it may be worth mentioning my Desire HD is a Vodafone Australia branded phone which hasn't been updated at all.
Well, the triangle image thingy means you dont have recovery flashed...
So, you have to choose 'Flash ClockworkMod Recovery' first. - That wil download a file from the internet and install it for you, so make sure you have internet connection
That will flash/install a recovery for you, in which you can create a backup.
Oh and i think you need to S-OFF your phone before installing recovery (im not sure about that but thats what i've heard)
click here for S-OFF http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=855403 --the last process says that after S-OFF you can install CWM recovery

Can you confirm if you did this separately to ROM Manager or as per above, used the Flash Recovery option in ROM Manager?
Have you confirmed you do have root?
If you reboot into recovery do you get to the clockworkmod recovery screen? What version is it?
If root can't be confirmed, re-do the visionary method. If root is confirmed but can't get to CWM-R do as per above and flash recovery from RM console.
Yes, I can confirm it is rooted.
I just ENG S-OFFed, so I'm going to try flashing recovery once again, although I'm still pretty sure it worked before that since Clockworkmod says "Current Recovery: ClockworkMod 3.0.2.6, Latest Recovery: ClockworkMod 3.0.2.6"
Will I do damage flashing it again?
EDIT: I pressed Flash ClockworkMod Recovery again and it waited for a little and then said that it was successful.
EDIT 2: Attempting another backup... And it's working!
No, you won't damage the it.
As I fly through different ROM's and do lot's of restores and backups I often have times where I need to reflash recovery.
look uot the link in my signature and try to do what it explanes......
Do all fases of rooting and you will have a perfectly rooted phone.
Also follow suggestions of CodeNameUnknown1.

Great news!! Glad you got it sorted so far.
So, I have a problem.
I pressed the Backup option in ROM Manager, and the phone restarted, I'm now in Recovery mode... But I have a very strange problem. I can't make any selections.
I can scroll through the menu options fine, but can't select anything. If I press the power/lock button, the menu goes away and the clockworkmod logo in the middle just brightens up. If I press the home or menu buttons, the same thing happens, and if I press them again the menu just reappears. The return and search buttons do nothing except vibrate. What the hell?
That's an odd one.
Can you boot into recovery by turning phone off then holding vol- press power button and go to recovery from there? Does this do the same thing?
If same then I would uninstall ROM Manager and flash the recovery again via fastboot (in which case you can download the 3.0.2.8 version (page 3 ish of the development forum). Then try again.
Then re-install ROM Manager (which will show wrong version but ignore it).
At the moment I'm having trouble trying to turn off the phone at all :S looks like I'm actually going to have to open this horrible battery cover.
EDIT: After a battery pull I tried holding the Vol+ button and power button but it has just booted normally.
I can't actually try the vol- and power because my volume down button simply doesn't work...
EDIT 2: Uninstalled ROM Manager, reinstalled, booted into Recovery Mode, now it's backing up right next to me! Yay!
So I assume that, once it's done, I just take one big file it makes and put it on my laptop or something?
EDIT 3: Okay, one more step and I should be completely rooted with no hassles.
Will this method (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857537) work for a branded phone? It says it requires a stock kernel. My phone meets all other requirements, but is the kernel of a Vodafone AU branded Desire HD 'stock' enough to work with this S-OFF tool? I would attempt it but I'm a little worried I might screw something up.

[Q] Start bootmenue without volume down button

Hello folks,
since two days I can't use my desire properly anymore. Wifi had some issues, volume buttons sometimes stopped working and the phone rebooted itself. The phone was rooted with unrevoked ans S-OFF. I thought that maybe the software was damaged so I decided to reinstall, but this time with the original RUU.
I used this one: RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.09.405.8_Radio_32.43.00.32U_5.09.00.20_release_140022_signed
After installing, the phone got in a reboot loop. Now, I cant get into the bootmenu because the volume down button doesn't work. Is there any other possibility to get into the bootmenu?

Power+back button. It will launch into fastboot menu I think. From there click hboot. (It might also be that it launches into hboot and you click fastboot. Not too sure). It's the way I used when my vol buttons are unresponsive.

[Q] HELP: My rooted G2 vision wont go to recovery, and it has long boot process

My G2 is rooted and It wont allow to access my recovery image.
Also: the phone takes awhile to boot up, I wiped and changed the rom already still the same results.
And it doesn't show any boot animations. I'm think this could be a hardware problem. Am I right?
Which recovery are you using? If you have 5.x its still very buggy and fails to boot to recovery a lot of the time. Downgrade back to 3.0.2.4, or use 4ext recovery.
On every boot? Cause the first boot is meant to take quite a while.
Please define how long exactly its taking, cause a minute or so is not unusual.
Boot animations would normally be a rom issue I think.
-Nipqer
If you are having trouble getting to recovery, you can 1) remove and re-insert the battery 2) hold down the volume down key, then press the power button on top of your phone 3) Let your phone boot to a white screen with colorful text 4) Use your volume up and down keys to highlight the recovery option 5) press the power button to select recovery.
Now that you are in recovery, you can either restore a nandoid back up you made previously, or flash another rom (you might be best off flashing a rom that is not Sense 3 or 3.5 unless you are sure you either have an HTC Desire Z (not a G2 phone) or you know that you have upgraded your G2 HBOOT to a Desire Z HBOOT).
Hope this helps you!

Every reboot it doesn't show the boot animations. and it also doesn't show the recovery screen at all. It's a display problem for sure I think.
Also the phone wont show the home screen until I tap the power button for like 2 minutes. (The LEDS pop up on the buttons, but the screen wont turn on)
I also changed the battery still no bueno.

Also I am currently running the latest CM7.
Try starting up rom manager. It had an option to reboot into recovery. It might work.
Further check if there is a file called PC10IMG.zip in the root of your sdcard. Delete it when it's present.

Hi!
I have a similar problem here!
I sent my Desire Z in for repair (display was not working), they replaced the main board and shipped it back with the stock Gingerbread ROM.
I downgraded to the stock Froyo ROM and rooted it again (including S-OFF, flashing HBOOT, CWM recovery etc.)
I wanted to restore a backup (done before sending it in) using CWM, but when I select the "backup/restore" menu item all I get is a black screen with the CWM logo in the middle. When I press the power button it goes back to CWM's main menu.
It's the same with version 5.0 and 3.0.
I was able to restore the backup from the ROM Manager, but I don't want to install any other ROM right now because if something goes wrong, I won't be able to restore.
Is there something I can do?
Thanks!
---------- Post added at 02:47 AM ---------- Previous post was at 02:44 AM ----------
Well, I feel like a moron.
The power button is not to select menu items in CWM. When I press the trackpad instead of Power all is fine
Should I install CWM 5 again or keep 3? What do you recommend?
From all I've read CWM is still buggy. I'd use 4EXT Recovery instead. It has fantastic support and contains all the options in CWM and more. Link is in my signature.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Im also facing the same problem before this. Im unable to go into recovery by manual that mean by using vol down + power. Just boot normally & using the rom manager to boot into recovery. Problem solve.
