One X won't play videos sent from IPhone. Why? Help! - HTC One X

Can someone help me and find out why my.phone won't play a .mov file or video sent from my girls iPhone. She took a video of my step son. Sent it to my gmail account. But when I hit info to play, it says, " no app can play this file or open" any advice? And the phone has flash player is installed. But when I scroll through the applications menu, it's not there. I thought it was at first. I had to do a factory reset and erased internal storage as well. does doing this erase preloaded apps? And the phone is new. Never rooted..I'm sure being the latest and greatest phone out there it should play a .mov file attachment from an iPhone. Thanks for the help

flash player won't play .mov files, because, well, they aren't flash files
if the gallery app won't play it, try something like this

You must enable flash player from drop down menu of browser. Just tick it. To play the video, try mx player free from market.

I had the same issue with my girlfriends iphone. I just used Vidcon from the market to convert the video to a better format. Conversion is so fast on the HOX.
Could always use an alternative video player. MX player or even BSPlayer lite.
Either way will work. I usually convert them because I like to lol

Sorry. I'm new to android.. is this normal for a phone like this not to have a proper app for movie files? I will definitely check out a few apps to download. Thanks.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium

For the same reason you cant play some files on your Windows Media Player PC.
If our phones could do everything right out from the box, we wouldnt need the Market (Play), right ?
If you cant do something, just download a app.

It does have a proper app for playing movie files. The fact apple use their own format instead of a default .mp4/.avi or any other standard format isnt androids fault. Use MXplayer as above or google 'videolan android xda' and that will play everything.

Thanks guys for all the help. Downloaded mx player. Works great. U love that's site

Viewing MP4 instead of Flash?

With websites that support flash, I am stuck viewing videos in that format. With my old phone, it didn't have flash support and no problem viewing MP4 format.
I would like to use Mobo Player because it is much more convenient than using flash for video. What can I do?
Go to Settings.
Go to Applications.
Go to Manage Applications.
Now...I'm assuming you have a flash player app installed.
Click that app and go to the Launch By Default.
Click Clear Defaults.
Now try to reproduce the issue.
Hopefully this can fix it for you.

Yes, Adobe Flashed is installed (it comes by default and I've updated it), but there are no defaults on the app or Mobo Player. I think I might have to uninstall it in order to view MP4. Is there any way around this?

Sorry for the confusion, when I said flash player, I meant flv player (stand alone) to view flv flash files.
You should install SHOOTME and take a screen shot of your phone so we can see what you're referring to.

Thank you for bothering to respond, I appreciate it. I will describe my situation better:
Whenever I would go to a flash supported website, say CNN, it would view the video in flash instead of any other format such as MP4. I have Adobe Flash installed on my phone, and I'd like to know how to override it so that I can view any video in regular format. I don't want to have to uninstall Adobe Flash because I go to Newgrounds.com a bunch on my phone.

So you mean, when you go to CNN(example), you want to have the option to view the video with one of your MP4 player apps. However, you don't have any option and it automatically plays via Flash? Is this correct?
If so, I don't think there's a way dude. I could be wrong.

Video playing frm pc to phone

Hey xda
I'm using es file explorer and I finally got it to sync with my desktop ove wifi server ..my question is how do I play videos from the phone directly from the pc without downloading...like click the viddeo and it plays directly on the phone?
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium
Those are two different things. Syncing just makes sure all thes files match each other. Your phone is downloading anything from the sync folder and vice versa. I don't know anyway to play videos from your pc without downloading it first. Hopefully someone else can help you.

You need a DLNA compatible player on your computer and phone; easiest would be WMC on your computer and Twonky on your phone

Whatever applicatin you use as a media center on your computer should have built in DLNA (server/streaming) capabilities; all you need to do is enable that feature and search the Market for a DLNA player/client

Yes, just as when you stream via Hulu/Netflix, its getting downloaded to your temp/cache; the difference being you can start watching immediately as opposed to waiting for a massive file to finish downloading and you don't need the actual space to store the media.

If your computer has a powerful enough CPU to encode video on the fly (dual core within the past 1 or 2 years at least in performance) you can use an app like Emit to stream in real time. I have a laptop with a Core i5 M450 @ 2.4 GHz and it works surprisingly well. Check out the thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=15611569
Basically it's similar to Apple's Air Video if you're familiar with that.

That is a silly argument of semantics. There is a huge difference in a tiny downloaded cache, and moving say a 1 GB (or larger) file to your phone.
There a several apps on the Market that will do this function. I've used Plex, and it works well on our phone. Cost is $4.99, but it easily streams video from your computer to your phone over WiFi, and easy to setup. You can even set it up to stream over 3G, and other WiFi networks when you are away from home, as long as you forward the ports on your home computer (takes a bit more setup to do this).
If you have a lot of movies on your computer, its pretty awesome to be able to browse and stream them from anywhere. Plex is not necessarily the best app of this type, its just the only one I've tried. The app suggested by c00ller above seems very similar. That one has a free version, which is a bonus since you can test drive it before committing your $$$.
It may be silly but I thought the OP was looking for a way to play files directly off his computer like a network drive. I apologise if it seemed I was being a contrarian.
P.s.
I suppose that downloads to your phone as well.... anywho...

Its easy with ES File Explorer, I had done it few times.
Share a folder in your PC with videos
Turn on wifi in your mobile
Go to LAN from the tab (instead of local)
from menu ->new -> scan
it will show your pc Ip,
click and connect( i think u need passwords less sharing option in PC)
browse the folders, open any file (Suitable player needed in MOBILE)
ES will ask for choice to vopen the file in ES player or default player or some other player (in my case mobo player)
Just select and play.

Install a DLNA server on your PC. I use the (paid) Mezzmo server. A little searching will reveal some freeware ones too.
I have Mezzmo serving up shows I record and DVDs I've ripped, all stored on a 3TB hard drive in MP4 format. On my phone, and the kid's Android Tablets, I've install a DLNA client like Skifta. Skifta connects to Mezzmo, presents an easy-to-navigate browser. Just choose your video and play it.

[Q] Music not showing up. Any suggestions?

Hey guys my complete music library isnt showing up on my arc however it works on my other phones? any Idea what it can be, Ive used google music and the default one and both have the same problem
Go to the app and clear its cache. See if that helps.
Also, have a quick browse and check whether there's a .nomedia file in your music folder.

How to get unsupported apps

I have come across some apps that say they are not supported with our device. Its a feaking nexus device and it's advertised as supporting every app in the play store. Any way I found this solution and thought I'd share it with you all.
This person figured out a way to download the apk from the play store to your computer to side load if you cannot get the app on your device.
http://codekiem.com/2012/02/24/apk-downloader/
Yeah, I have a phone and player and just back up all apps with my file explorer. Then put all apk's in an "app folder" on Dropbox, then copy them to any new device. Most side load without issue. Unfortunately they aren't recognized at the Play store and won't update, but when they update on my phone, I just copy the new one. I have to do that on my player with GO Notifications, not sure why it's been "incompatible" for 6 months now...
Thanks a lot work fine

Despite adding to the target line, it still says I need to turn off SSL warnings
Which device ID do you use, for the Nexus 7, or a different device?
**EDIT** Put in my SGS3 details and it worked fine
Another way to do it is to go into astro viewer and go to backup apps. Go down the list to the app u want and click backup and then go look in the backup folder and u will have a apk that u can put on ur phone/ tablet etc...
I recommend the app Datasync. It's pretty easy to use and can even sync data (like game saves on Max Payne or whatever you want). It syncs data between your phone and nexus.

[Q] Google Play Music app doesn't allow me to download songs.

Hey!
I am having a problem with the Google Play Music app. I cannot make the songs available offline! When I view the menu, the option to download the songs does not show up. I contacted Google about this but they haven't responded yet. Does anyone else have this problem and can offer advice?
Thanks,

wws12: Can you stream those songs? Google Play does only allow use from 10 different devices. After flashing a few custom roms (each ne version counts as a new device, also it is the same hardware device) my 10 were used up and on the eleventh i couldn't download or stream any music from the online library. Maybe it is the same for you. You can unregister devices on the website.

Question: How many times have you flashed a new ROM since using Google Play Music? And have you checked out your registered devices? How many are there? If you are a serial flasher like many here on XDA, you need to deregister some older versions of your phone.
Go to a web browser on your computer. Go to the Google Play Music make sure you are logged in. Get to the music settings and check out your devices there.
I have never flashed a ROM on my N7.

I am not just talking about your N7, do you have a phone you flashed and used Google music with? If so, each different rom will be recognized as a different device, dependant on the rom dev and how they listed your device.
Ok next question; How much space do you have on your device? It's not nearly full is it?
Nope I don't think its even half. Got the 16gb version.

Yes you can download songs to your nexus 7.
Select the artist or albums tab in Google music
Then click the 3 dots in the top right hand corner (menu button).
Select "choose on device music"
You should now see a pin with the option to save off line next to the album

You sir, are amazing! Worked like a charm. Quick question, is there a way to only download specific songs instead of the whole album?
Thanks,

If I want a song (or even album) on my N7, I just go to Google Music on a PC and use Music Manager to download all to my PC, then select what I want on the N7. It's much faster this way (once music is on your PC), and gives you a complete back up of what's online.
PS: If you go to Albums and select "choose on device music"... then swipe to songs, and select a song, and another song... etc... then turn off wifi, the individual songs seem to be added on your device. Not sure how many that will do it for, I only tried 2.

Short answer.... No.
What the guy in the post before me is referring to is caching, which the play music will do to your last songs played based on your app settings.
There use to be a feature to back up individual song, but it has been removed in the latest update to the music app... so this doesn't just affect the nexus 7.
