Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium

download mode? I dont think so. I'm getting no battery 'vibe', no nothing. I cannot power it up at all.
I only had clockwork installed (no root or rom) and performed a backup then i went to another screen where CW froze, pulled battery and now Its dead. Is there a PC program that i can access the oc from the back side?
I'm figuring that i wiped everything off the phone but if there is a way to access the recovery partition I would like to know!

lol, obviously!

Install Samsung kies, (this will insure you have the usb drivers)
have your usb connected to your computer but DISCONNECTED from your phone.
Take the battery out, make sure the phone is off.
replace battery, hold down the vol. up and down key at the same time.
while both buttons are pressed plug the usb cable into your computer.
This should get you into download mode, just choose to continue.
From here you can either use odin or kies to flash the complete firmware.

Maybe you can warranty it? Or is it up already?

Our phone hasn't even been out for a year

Just send it back it's broken.

Thanks guys...
Yeah as soon as it happened I slapped myself for not having patience... I'm away on work right now so getting a replacement is not going to happen for a few days.
I'm going to try the warranty angle.
hopefully they don't look to see if its rooted... oie.

apparently there is a company that can JTAG it and basically rewrite to the phone. (hardware needed) I'm mailing it out today.
$80 with express return shipping and unlock.
if this works I will have them do the same for my G2x (apparently I'm good at hard bricking phones <F- I never had a problem before>)

Looks like you had a bad phone to begin with. Never heard of it freezing in cwm before. Just do a warranty exchange. They mail it next day. Then you can mail yours back. No need to do a replacement.
If it doesn't vibrate at all then yeah Hardbrick
Sent from my SGH-T989D using xda premium

ok, so i mailed it to mobiletechvideos.com... paid $20 to express ship it to them, they got it on Friday, fixed it, mailed it out the same day and express shipped it to my house ( i was gone on a trip) and so when i got home, went to my mailbox (today Saturday) and it was sitting there waiting for me.
keep in mind, this was from a solid true brick (would not even power up).
Good stuff!
I had a restore state before i screwed up my phone and guess what, like new (old new) all apps and everything.

[Q] Epic 4G power button not working...

Here's the situation, My wife has the Epic 4G, this is her 2nd replacement, and cannot get another thru the insurance. She dropped the phone, from couch to the floor, not far at all, but still dropped. The power button doesn't work now - at all. If I plug in to charger, it does light up keypad, home keys, and battery charging icon. Just no response from power button.
My question is, is there any way to turn the phone on thru the PC maybe? As long as I can get it on, then we should be good. I googled all over, but no solution found yet. Hopefully there's some way to kick it on thru the PC. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!
Have you tried pulling the battery cover off to get better acces to the switch and jiggling it around a little. Maybe the switch button just got jammed in. try pulling the button outward with a sharp object. Basic stuff, i know...but it is just a switch.
Lol... thanks man. I tried everything you can think of, took the phone apart and everything. The power button is just done. I ended up running Odin3, and slid keypad open, held 1 button, and plugged in USB and she jumped into Download mode - Thank god. Ran ACS recovery.tar file,AND it reset! Now, as long as the battery doesn't die, I can wake the phone with Volume keys, and all is good. If the battery does die - then I can just run the Odin3 process again... women...lol!
check eBay for a parts phone. maybe you can frankenstein it back to good.

Wife did the same to hers, dead power button. She usually tries to keep it charged all time now, to keep it from turning off.
However, if the phone turns off or freezes, we get it turned back on by Plugging in the charger until the softkeys light up, and as soon as the battery icon turns green, unplug the charger. The phone should reboot, and if you timed it right, you'll see the samsung logo.

You need to have a jig to put the phone in download mode, then use odin to flash a stock modem this will cause the phone to reset. As stated before you can wake the phone from sleep mode by sliding it open. Just do not let the battey full drain or you will have to repeat the process. This process can be done with any "jig-able" samsung device that is flashed with odin.
Hope this helps

Silly work around
I had an Epic that did the same thing, I know there is a keyboard shortcut to power up the device but I'm not sure what it is. I was able to power mine up after about 15 minutes of smashing all of the keys on the keyboard at random at the same time. Perhaps somebody with a bit more time or understanding of the keymap might be able to figure it out.
Talk to your Local Sprint Store
For me it was the button that failed. Since the power button is a part of the keyboard assembly it required replacing the keyboard. I called over to the local Sprint store and, after some begging, they agreed to part with the keyboard from a bricked phone they had in the shop. It took very little time for me to replace it and get the phone up and running again.
Hi, my power button wont work either. It happened when I replace my screen yesterday. I cant take it to sprint because it is rooted with a custom rom. Does anyone know exactly what the problem is or what part I need. I am pretty good with androids so I think I could do it

An easier method for ur madness
Had the same issue with my power button not working. I'm not sure why but if I use my lg usb cord to charge it the phone will boot it self. Now if I use my Samsung, or Motorola or even tried a blackberry usb cord they all will just charge the battery. Kind of strange but lot less hectic than booting through ur computer every time. Hopefully this helps
Stumbled across this thread while playing with an EPIC 4G with the same problem. Quite by accident, and before I saw this thread, same thing worked for me. A LG USB cord boots it .

[Q] I think I bricked and I need help

As the title implies I think I did in my Epic 4g. I flashed the CM7 mtd build a few days ago and just found out about the 911 issue so i tried ODIN'ing back to stock and it was taking forever (it got stuck of factoryrfs.rfs if I remember correctly) so I unplugged the USB cable as I have done before when Odin freezes on me. When I unplugged the battery and then put the battery back in it will not boot or go into download mode. Any advice or did I actually brick it this time? Thanks
I have heard stories of leaving the battery out for a few days might help. Also holding the power button while inserting the battery. I haven't tried those options, but I have seen people mention them on the forums.
I did something similar the other day.
Remove the battery for a couple of minutes. Plug in with no battery and go to dl mode. You will be fine.
Ensure to use the pit file and select repartition when coming from mtd to stock

Advice above is good. Definitely try it with no battery or sd card using the computer as the power source try to put it into download mode. Others have had success popping the battery in and out trying to get into download mode. Hold all the buttons at once while battery is out to clear any capacitive charge.
I thought my phone was bricked thought it would not boot up at all,i after the third day I took it to sprint to get a replacement, I guess the 3rd day was the charm because as soon as the sprint guy put the battery in it booted up to clockwork and they said my phone was rooted and they would not service, good thing I didnt need them after clockwork any way
Thanks for all the quick responses. I left the battery out of the phone all night and tried popping out the battery and plugging the phone directly into my laptop via USB (HP touchpad cable) and still no go. I tried pressing all the buttons as someone suggested to reduce capacitive charge and still nothing, any other tips or am I going to have to visit the big yellow's at Sprint?
Hidden reset button
Ok, I havent tried this... and I also hear that the older epics dont have it. When you take off the back cover, There is a small hole by the camera. I cant find he the xda form maybe someone will be kinda enough and throw the link up.
But some claim that the hole by the camera is a reset button. poke it with a paper clip (gently?) for about 10-30 secs.
I hope this helps, or you get it working some way or another. I'd look into getting a new usb cable if I were you!

Pretty sure I bricked my phone with a bad root attempt (details inside) please help!

So I was running the rooting process and it started the writing the kernel without error but then it just sat there for a very long time (over an hour) without any action.... I started getting concerned about battery drain so I went ahead and rebooted.
My phone wouldn't boot, just do the "invalid firmware" thing but I was still able to POWER+VOL-UP to bring the rom flashing menu up. At this point I figured I had very little battery left so I wanted to charge it up a bit before trying to flash again.
I didn't realize that the phone won't actually charge without a valid firmware. I came back an hour later and couldn't POWER+VOL-UP again, it would say "LOW BATTERY, CAN'T DOWNLOAD ROM" or something along those lines.
So, I'm pretty sure I could still flash something if I could still get to the menu. I can't get to the menu beacause the battery won't charge and the battery won't charge until I can re-flash.... talk about a catch22!
Any suggestions before I go try to cash in my best buy warranty for new phone? (I figure that I can blame it on an OTA firmware update because no rooted kernel/rom ever got loaded)

Ya and when you do try again try a different cable other than the one odin froze with. When I first used odin it kept failing I switched cables and then it worked flawlessly. Also about the battery instead of waiting until you get your external charger or second battery I would try to go down to your local sprint store or bestbuy and ask them if they can charge the battery for you.
Cut off the end ofa USB cable. Foretaste and red and black wires. Look at your battery, the positive and negative terminals are labeled. Put your battery back it, but don't push it in all the way, leave a 1/4" gap. Place the red write on the positive terminal, black on negative triple check this, very important. Push battery in making sure the wires are secure. Plus other end into USB port on computer. Insert your other USB cable into to the phone, the other end into computer. Hold vol down and power. Wait until phone turns on. Press volume up. Flash gaging's rooted stock room with Odin. (download the .exe file and double click, it's really as simple as that).
That should work. It did for me.
Then search XDA for "mobile Odin". Find and download steady Hawkins' kennel and flash that through mobile Odin.
From there download a ROM, I suggest Calkulin's. Reboot into recovery and flash.
Now you are rooted, and have a custom ROM

That battery idea seems a little risky to me but if you feel comfortable doing it then go right ahead. I would take it to sprint and have them charge the battery personally though. Other than that though ya I would do what this person is saying thats basically the same thing I did when I almost bricked my phone.

That is what I was wondering myself because I had a problem that I thought was my phone but it was a bad plug in my house. When I would charge it when it was booted up it would just say battery disconnected so I would charge it when it was off and that worked fine. Also ya it does use more power in recovery especially if you are flashing.
What's risky about giving your phone 5volts? The battery is more than 5 volts..
You don't have to use odin to root the Epic 4G Touch anymore. There's updated ways to root it and the latest ways won't give you that yellow triangle. Go on youtube and check out "QBKING77" channel. He has the latest ways to root and all on the E4GT.
Have you tried taking the battery completely out, plugging in the charger and try getting into Odin mode? I bricked mine a few Weeks ago and used Odin with out my battery even in and put my phone back to stock then re rooted. I had the battery out because the min I put it in I had a black screen and nothing worked.

In his latest video you actually are using odin its just a one click odin that is all set up for you.
I am confused and sorry for that but what's wrong with sfhubs method for rooting. Also if you brick your phone its bricked and done. To me there is no bricking and fixing, if it still comes on or you have a light its not bricked. I would suggest if you get your phone at least up and running use sfhubs method its pretty damn fool proof. Hope you get your phone fixed....

Oh yeah that's for EL29 latest update. I was referring to the method before that. Where people can be on all types of set ups EK02, EG31, ect. My experience with EL29 sucks. I hate it. Why did Samsung mess up the wallpaper background movement it had before. Only good thing about EL29 for me is removing that CIQ.
Thanks everyone, for all the help and info - it's all greatly appreciated!!!
Quick answers:
- I did try removing the battery and using just the charger without the battery but the phone won't turn on. I don't believe my EVO or Hero ever did either (but maybe the old TouchPro's ?)... anyway...
@CBowely - I like your idea and yeah, 5v should be OK as long as I dont get my +/- mixed up but I think, assuming I have time tomorrow, I might try the store first. I'm in no major rush, my EVO is still up and running.
I got the 4GT at BestBuy Mobile and their warranty seems a little more flexible than Sprint's so I'll go in and say that the battery died during the EL29 firmware OTA update (which I actually selected CANCEL to, so I could root it pre-EL29). Best case scenario, they fix the battery and put it back to stock or give me a new phone, I go home and try again. Worst case scenario, I at least get the battery charged.
Final update to the thread: Took the phone back, they gave me a new one but it was an EK02 so I've had no problems rooting it!

[Q] Brickd hard or soft

Hey not really a noob, been flashing rooms since I had my vibrant. Flashing this morning ran into an issue. Was using Odin, said passed, disconnected my phone and its been completely unresponsive since. No charge no recovery, no download. I just think I'm doing something wrong, anyone have precise steps to check to see if it will enter download mode from this state so I can flash back to stock at least?
Feel free to move or link to a thread with the answer.
try removing your battery sim card and micro sd card for 5 min then then plug the wire back to phone while holding both volume buttons then put all your sim sd and battery back (OR JUST YOUR BATTERY IS FINE)and see if it reads it now ?
So the wire should be plugged in the wall or computer?
Still nothing. Just hoping I don't have to get rid of it
The wire should be plugged into the computer assuming you have all the Odin files you need to flash it back
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda app-developers app
Yeah it didn't work. Still unresponsive, a jig should work no? I just need to get into download mode, flashing back is the easy part
yes a jig will most certainly work get one on here this is the one i have http://www.amazon.com/SainSonic-Don...id=1365710755&sr=8-1&keywords=samsung+usb+jig works like a charm takes 2/3 days and your good to go hit the thanks if i helped
If the phone is completely dead after unplugging in the middle of odin then the phone will most likely not boot up even after using a jig...the reason i say this is because the same thing happened to me and i tried the jig but nothing your best bet might be to claim the warranty if you still have it (usually lasts for 1 year or more if you have their plan) and act stupid when you go to tmobile...

Help! Screen broken? Phone dead?

Okay ladies and gentlemen, please take the time to help me out, as I've never had this happen before...
I should state that I am on Slim Bean weekly (4.3) and BionicSheep kernel.
Today I went to the gym, used my bluetooth headset as usual. I turned off my bluetooth when I got home and rebooted my phone (bluetooth won't turn off without a reboot). I laid my phone down (I didn't check to see if it rebooted), took a shower and played video games for about an hour.
When I checked to see if I had any texts, I noticed my phone wouldn't wake (I figured it had a hardboot), so I tried holding down the power button to reboot, which didn't work. I pulled the battery and saw the Bionic Sheep splash screen, then nothing. Tried the power button again, nothing. Now when I pull the battery, I see the Bionic Sheep splash screen about 50% of the time, if that... usually I feel a little vibrate, then see nothing. I have the USB Jig for download mode, which I used and it went into download mode, but then the screen disappeared...
What can this be? Dying phone, breaking screen? HELP!
EDIT: Just tried recovery. I see the blue writing in the upper left that says "Recovery Booting..." then nothing, just a black screen
Then you're not booting download mode, thats recovery trying to boot. Hold home, volume DOWN and power. When it starts to boot/vibrate release power only.
If you can get here flash stock/root66 firmware via odin and report back.

Sorry I meant recovery, not download. Sorry for that. I tried download too as stated earlier.
Do you happen to have the links for odin and stock recovery? If not, i'll take a look in a sec.
EDIT: Just downloaded odin from your sig, I'll check for stock firmware in a sec.
But a new problem, like I said before my phone goes into download, but it only stayed on the screen for a few seconds, then turns off. Odin isn't recognizing the phone at all...
I just tried to do it again, download mode only stays on for about 3 seconds. Odin recognized it for the few seconds its on, then it disappears... any ideas?

If it powers on without having to press the button, then I am 95% sure that is the problem. The power button is perpetually pressed. It could be the switch is loose or jammed, which I believe is usually the case. It is possible that there could be a short, but I doubt it as this has been happening more and more frequently lately. Some have reported being able to fix it themselves by opening it and either replacing or reseating the button, while others opt to take it to a local shop and have it fixed. (if you do, do not let them attempt to flash anything or they will brick it).
You can try to tap on it to jiggle it unstuck, but if you get it working again, this will certainly only be temporary.

Okay ill give the power button a try before calling the insurance later today. Thanks for your help.
Do you happen know how t mobile insurance works? I'm really low on cash so i'm hoping there isn't a deductible for first time "offenses"...
EDIT: Quick question though, if it was in a constant boot loop with the button pressed, wouldn't I feel it vibrate multiple times and/or see the screen flash multiple times? I only feel/see it do these things once, then its gone.
I just took it apart and the power button was fine, so i'm now guessing this is something more serious...
Well I went through T mobile and am getting my phone replaced for $5. It's on backorder though so I have to wait 5-7 days before they even ship it, which kinda sucks.
Anyways I am hoping they don't see that I flashed a custom ROM. The once in awhile it does show the splash screen, it shows a little sheep on the bottom (due to the Bionic Sheep kernel), and the DL mode that stays on for about 2-3 seconds shows a flash count of 1. I am hoping they don't see it, or don't take the time to check after realizing that it's not functioning properly...
So did you get a warranty replacement then? (Insurance requires a $150 deductible, but it doesn't matter if it's been rooted) If so, they might see that and then charge you, I'm really not sure... I've heard of them doing that and also heard they don't even bother looking.

I called T mobile tech support, and they only charged me $5, not $150. The refurb should be here on Thursday, I guess I'll find out soon enough if they charge me for the rooting (im pretty sure they won't notice since the screen is on for less than 3 seconds, but who knows).
I can always try the 'when in doubt, deny deny deny' technique. Lol
I've been with them for awhile and sent back multiple rooted phones and have never been charged

How long have you had the phone? If it's still under warranty then it's just the $5. But in my case where it is a year and a half old and there is physical damage, I seriously doubt they'd go for that!
That also means I might still just get a refurbished T999. Insurance claims go through Asurion, while warranty goes through T-Mobile. And unless I'm mistaken, Asurion has their own stock of refurbs...
