Can someone recommend a rom for me to use on my gnex

I'm fairly new to android but went ahead and unlocked and stuff to install stock 4.0.2 ahead of my phone receiving the update. I'm growing frustrated with some lag and things here and there so I think its time I install a custom rom. I'm currently running stock 4.0.2 unlocked GSM version (yakju). Can anyone give me a good recommendation since there's so many to choose from?

^^ Yep. The AOKP ROM is the most stable for sure.

Yep. The AOKP ROM is about as flawless as it gets. Even full stable CM7 ROMs on my previous phones were not as good as this. And the way Romanbb designed the settings toggles within the notification drop down is absolutely perfect, IMO.

I'm currently using bigxie's rom and its really good - smooth and with great added features.
I might try the AOKP one though as it does seem to be favoured by quite a few people !
Its easy to flash the new roms so why not just flash one, try for a day , then flash another ? Everyone has their personal likes/dislikes anyway.......

The only way to truely know is to try them all yourself but for me after doing that I am stuck with AOKP and APEX kernel. Great match.

Only thing stopping me from using AOKP is the pink unicorn - NO THANKS!!

This is a great combo. I too was a little disheartened by the interface lag the gnex had on stock, but after I flashed this combo I was MUCH happier. My phone is so buterryyyyyy now and I love it.

GummyNex. AOKP has too many mods for me. I want as close to stock as possible but still have that customized feel.

A lot of UI options in the room. Like add remove and change order and color of the on screen white nav keys! For me this rom was a must have and I highly recommend it!

I'm using FOXHOUND. Only had my phone for 2 days now. I may try aokp as I have been hearing good things about it.

For anyone having tried both CM9 KANG and AOKP...
Which one would you say is best and why? Enough difference between the two to bother changing?

lol Yeah, I wasn't a fan of the pink unicorn boot animation either, but it is easy to use custom boot animations.
I just copied the bootanimation.zip to /data/local

Again, for those of you happy using AOKP: I am trying to figure out whether to jump to the GNex yet. I am on an old HTC Incredible, but frankly, it gets the job done and I get better than 24 hours battery life yet. I remember the bad old days when my batt life sucked & I was always flashing new SW to make my phone work, and I don't feel like going back to that. I will be on the Verizon CDMA / LTE version. If I flash AOKP + Franco:
1. Will most of my apps run smoothly / not FCing all the time?
2. Will I be able to get 12-14 hours of light usage from the phone?
Not looking for guarantees, just your personal opinion if you're running this setup.

1) The only thing I ever got a FC on was when I was using LauncherPro Calendar widget. Now that I'm using the Nova launcher I don't remember seeing a force close.
2) 12-14 hours should be easily doable. With my current config I'm at ~ 79% in almost 6hrs with 1h10m screen on time.

AOKP definitely at the moment, smooth, more features than any thing else ive tried. Combined with Nova launcher there aint much it can't do.
Load a new boot image though LOL.

Definitely AOKP. I don't know about smoothness (I thought the Gnex was smooth already) but I absolutely love the added control. To be honest though, it was the notification toggles that got me (and admittedly cause me to root). The unicorn was a surprise, but a quick bootanimation flash was all that was necessary.

[Discussion]What ROM are you using and why?

This isn't really a question, but a discussion of what ROM you are using and why, that''s why I don't think this should be in the Q&A section.
I've tried a few ROMs, from LiquidSmooth to AOKP and I've tried a few kernels as well, from Glados to Franco and I've made up my mind.
I think AOKP is the best ROM right, and Milestone 5 being the best build of AOKP. It has a good battery life, awesome performance, and a massive amount of settings. I though about mentioning CM9 first, since it also has good battery speed and awesome performance, but it doesn't have all those features I need.
The best kernel to go with AOKP is undoubtedly Franco's kernel and his best build is the Milestone 3. I have tried Imoseyon's kernel, Trinity kernel and Galdos kernel and Franco's is still the best one. Also having Franco's kernel updater app makes everything even better!
Of course, this is all personal, which means this is what I think and you may have a mix that work better for you. I just though I'd share my input. Now, please share your input.

BAMF Paradigm or my own AOSP build. I don't mess with kernels much past what comes with rom (Not to say others shouldn't). I have been using imnut's pbj kernel the last few days, however.
Reasoning: Not so many tweaks that they end up conflicting with each other, time was taken to use proper signing keys, and the modifications are thoroughly tested before release.
I don't tell people what to use, as I let them make up their own mind. Just know I don't use anything I deem poor quality.

So far the most stable and battery saving combination for me. Using it since 24 hours and no FC or freezes so far. Think I'll stick with it.
Mods are cool too I just don't like the quick settings look in the notification bar and the not modable power menu. But I can live with that.

The quick settings take a bit to grow on ya. I didn't care for them at first but find them essential now. This coming from someone who is part of the team

It's gonna be real hard for me to adapt with another ROM other than AOKP, if I ever switch to some other ROM ^^

AOKP Milestone 5, but I'm switching to the Paranoid Android. Love the 'hybrid' tablet/phone mix

I'm currently running Liquidsmooth with Imoseyon's kernel. I was planning to try a lot more Roms and kernel combos than I currently have but been a bit too busy lately to test each one thoroughly. I'm happy with Liquidsmooth, it has very few issues and I'm getting 2 days battery life (minimum) with moderate usage.
Next time I get a decent chance I will try out a few more

Aokp franco.
Most of all other roms take features from aokp. Like liquid smooth who renamed rom control to liquid control

I'm using liquid smooth with the provided kernel. USB tethering isn't working but the lightweight and zippy feel of the from beats everything out there. I also have a nandriod of Paranoid Android, miui.us, Imm30b, and aokp just in case they improve enough to be worthy of a couple weeks on my phone. The aokp launcher IMHO hesitates too much.

I tried almost everything we have for now and stick to Modaco ROM because it's the smoothest of all, other roms are greatly customisable like CM9 or AOKP but they all lag here and there and i can't stand it/ The battery life is almost similar in all roms and it depends more on kernel you've chosen. I'm fine with franco milestone3. However I don't use nightlies because every of them gave me a random reboot at least once.

I have been rocking Bamf for the last few weeks. Really good with maybe 1 fc. Stock kernel wasn't giving me great battery so testing out Bond kernel right now. Getting slightly better battery results.
Have also tried Liquidsmooth, Modaco, and cm9. All pretty good but not as stable I find.
Have never tried Aokp. Crazy I know.

AOKP vs Cyanogen 9 vs Slim ICS?

Which rom do you like best and why?
I'm currently running CM9, Coming from the stock GSM 4.0.1, I think the battery on CM9 is heaps better but what are the others like? Thanks.
I want battery percentage (required) and possibly OC.
Also, If i was to flash AOKP is there any way to backup my homescreen? I've spent a while setting it up and it takes a while to do so. Thanks

Aokp got more features and less stability. I prefer cm coz I can't withstand frequent reboot. Can't stay on aokp more than one day.
I am using Nova launcher. It got backup function.
But I prefer to use ROM manager + cwm to backup the whole ROM before I try sth new and risky.

How does the battery compare? I'm on AOKP now and I find it very unstable. Once I click unlock it takes like 2 seconds for screen to come on.

I use AOKP M5 on a daily basis and I have been since M4 and its stable as a rock for me. Plus all the features are a great plus

Cm9 is too incomplete.. aokp is too slow. Slim has all the aokp features and its fast

I too was wondering the sake, I just got my GN yesterday rooted it and first thing I did was flash AOKP because I've heard so much about it coming from a GS2. And so far I found it stable but am curious about CM9 and slim as well. So I too would appreciate some feedback

I've been using AOKP with the tuv A1 kernel. For the most part it has been pretty stable and faster than what I was used to. The only times I have had any issue is with a lockscreen. If I use one, sometimes the phone freezes when trying to unlock. This has been frustrating for me since I am using a Seidio case. I have to remove the phone case to get to the back to pull the battery. The battery cover is a big enough pain in the ass. The case makes it worse. I have since turned off the lockscreen completely and I haven't had a freeze in 2 days.
I was kinda leaning towards slim ICS as well to test the waters on that one.

so make a nandroid backup and go and try the rom.
no one can tell you the ROM is good/bad or whatever, you have to make that conclusion yourself. its like saying, rock music is the best music. some people may agree and some will disagree. will you decide the answer to it without trying it? no... just go try it.
there are WAY too many threads on "whats the best rom?" "which rom to use?" ..... just read the thread and conclude yourself.
AOKP is not slow. CM9 is definitely incomplete hence "nightly"

I have never heard of a slim rom. Wish they would port it to the Sprint GN.

I'm on CM9 but Slim is a good, lightweight, quick ROM. It has some of the features of popular features of AOKP built in. I've run it in the past, and wouldn't hesitate to run it again.

Using slim now, never got a full day out of AOKP, to unstable for me. How does the battery compare? I remember having 50% after one day with data off and 2g on on CM9, and wondering how the battery compares.

personally, i use aokp m5 and have had no problems...

I am running the latest CM9 Nightly on my Verizon Nexus, and my Wife's Nexus is on AOKP 5.
My personal opinion I prefer CM9, is more low key and not so flashy, but still super fast / smooth, and has a great color control to really make the AMOLED screen pop.
I do like the million options AOKP 5 offers in settings, but CM9 will be getting those eventually. But something about the stripped down clean feel of CM9 appeals to me more.

CM9 for sure its rock solid and stable and the kernel is superfast and great on battery like you said. Just wait until they put theme manager in again ... it may be there as soon as the next nightly it looks like
AOKP is unstable, I always ditch it and its getting a bit bloated for my liking and i don't find I use much of the features anyway
Slim ICS is good if you dont want any features lol

Been on aokp since m4 now on m5 + Franco, run buttery smooth and great battery /feature rich.. Had not a single problem with it and wouldn't change it for anything

Never had a single problem with AOKP and I use my phone heavily on a variety of features plus benchmark tests as well.
That was all with a dirty flash from 4.0.3 to 4.0.4 builds so I don't understand where the slow or unstable is coming from.

if you stick to the milestone releases with AOKP you are *pretty much* good to go but the in between builds are always buggy ... like the build where AOKP set your bluetooth address to a generic one for and not your actual phones address, for example. I've also had random reboots with AOKP. AOKP uses it's users as the beta testers and gets bug reports from them.
the OP asked for advice and i told him my experience with AOKP, other users mileage may vary but, there is no denying AOKP non milestone releases have new bugs per release. Having said that AOKP is a beast of a rom and Team Kang are pushing the forefront for ICS features.
IMO if the OP wants a smooth rom with stability and more features properly tested and added daily you can not beat the CM9 experience on the Gnex. that is all

Yep, CM9 is moving a long very nicely lately, and the pace has really picked up in the last week or so, some big development updates every other release now. Next update tomorrow or Tuesday will have some really cool features implemented.

Agreed, CM9 has really been picking up speed now that the new build servers are online. Can't wait for the theme chooser implementation in the new builds ...
You can see that Cyanogen are really trying to set themselves apart as true professionals ... and they are

Thoughts on ROM's so far??

So I'm new to the android community coming from an iphone 4S, and so far it's pretty awesome. lol. I've tried two ROM's, AOKP and TuchMi. So far i'm enjoying TuchMi since it brings the stock with all of Samsung's features, plus overclocking, V6 and all that. performance has been nice. As i'm trying to get more into android, I wanted to know you guy's thoughts on the two ROM's or maybe any other ones that might be better?? thanks in advance!

I was hoping this thread to run good since I am trying to get an idea on roms since I just got my S III today.

We got enough good roms going.
I mean we have a subsidized carrier phone, so it's pretty natural for the international counterpart would get more attention.
With that said, I love AOKP.

AOKP is beast. Just trying to test out different ROM's, but seriously, if you like touchwiz, check it out. Only thing is, my apps say they are invalid when I download. Any help??

Also tried TuchMi, it was pretty good.
Currently using the diet ICS build from 08/04 with the latest BLUE theme installed (found in the diet ICS thread from peterguru) and it looks and works great. Running ktoonz latest kernel (which allows underclocking to 192MHz and has more steps than faux123's v009) and smokin's CPU Editor with Battery Saver. Great battery life, great performance, awesome blue "diet" theme. Probably my favorite so far.
To be honest though the thing that made me switch and flash diet ICS over TuchMi 5.0 was the inclusion of Google Wallet (although now my phone thinks its a Galaxy Nexus ) -- still haven't been able to test it out in the wild though...

AOKP has been wonderful so far, flashed it from CM9 and not really seeing any reason to go back although both are great in their own ways.

Wanam has a really nice ROM. Well that's if you're one of us that actually likes Touchwiz. I for one love it. Smooth and excellent battery life.

I've been on TuchMi-S3"X" 5.0 since i got my phone 2 weeks ago. So far the best. I tried Diet rom too, but it was a little skinny for me (lol?).
I tried AOKP today and I had used AOKP on my Atrix before, but I went back to TuchMis3x right away because its so far the best. Stable, Battery is insane too!
I'm just waiting for CM10 to fully come out for our phones and i'll make the switch!

Sooo, I switched from TuchMi to AOKP, and right after, my battery starts to drain. Drained about 5% within 2min. Running TuchMi, my battery barely moves. Now I'd have to say that it is successfully the best ROM imo. only problems are: my Google account syncs on and off with contacts, and sometimes i get a blue screen fracture. idk.

If your battery drained that fast then something is wrong. Almost 11 hours on battery with 2 hours of screen time, lte on all day and wifi on past 3 hours and I am sitting at 62% right now. I am on aokp ics right now. Only thing keeping me from newer updates is that HBO go doesn't work in any of the cm10 based in roms yet that I know of
I would also like to point out that it takes several battery cycles before a rom fully settles in and you find out how it truly performs with battery.

Thanks for that. Like I said, I'm new to this so I didn't know what was going on, so the first thing that came to my mind was to go back. Now I just flashed the AOKP jb ROM. The AOKP that i had before was the CM9 based one i believe? lol. Either way, thanks man. added a little more confidence for me lol.

Jellybro from Euroskank the best one for my needs. not the last one though. 2 days battery, butter smooth, love the Jelly aesthetics and simplicity.

When the bugs are worked out of paranoid android I would say give that a run. The ability to run phone and tablet on one device together flawlessly is great. Plus you ave full control over the size of all apps and the such.

JellyBro is my top pick, then would be a stock ROM ([ROM]{??/??/????}TEAM_INSOMNIA PrEsEnTs ARISTODEMOS) and after that I'd say AOKP CM9 based for EXTREMELY long battery life.

been using cm9 for a few days, perfectly stable so far and great battery life. Can't beat stock ics

I have been on Blazer O/C with the Kalagas mixed ICS Theme and love it. Seems all the stock based ROMS are fine with some nice tweaks

new Galaxy Nexus, looking for suggestions on ROM urgent [leave on business sunday]

I am a recent Galaxy Nexus owner, my daily main device is an Atrix 4g [motorola] but since I have been messing with "that rom" and having tons of stability issues, I am giving the "gnex" a chance
I leave on business Sunday so I can't take chances on unstable/buggy roms but need some good suggestions
the biggest feature I would need is soft key mods. I am willing to use an ICS rom but prefer having JB. Without the soft keys I am kind of lost and I honestly do not like action over flow and lack of menu/search
Next biggest issue is battery life, coming from a 1900 mah battery with a small pentile screen, battery life is not really a problem on atrix. Galaxy Nexus seems decent on battery life so far but would not mind a little boost
So if you have a good rom suggestion, let me hear it. The mainline roms I see [aosp and cm] don't have the soft key mods so hope you will help out

As Chopper states, you're the only one that can decide which ROM best suits your needs. That being said I would stay on stock until you have time to test out other ROMs; nothing worse than finding a bug when you really need a stable device.

Leaning towards AndroidME stock or AndroidME cm10...has anyone used this for more than a day or two?

I used AndroidME as a daily driver for quite some time (the stock version) and enjoyed it. Very stable and I got great battery life when using it with the Trinity Kernel (3.5-4 hrs screen on time). Am now running AOKP because of its added features and ability to customize.

CyanogenMod 10 is your best bet for modifiable Nav Bar buttons. The others, codename Android, AOKP, let you add, say, a search button to the Nav Bar, but at least with Codename Android the search button is smaller than the other buttons. It looks weird.
CyanogenMod 10 is the most "stock" custom ROM out there.

3.5-4 hours of the screen being on. Total use is between 15-20 hours. Enough to make it through the day as I charge overnight.
