Unplugged my Desire from the charger yesterday to discover the SD card had failed totally. Rebooting failed to recognise it and once the screen switched itself off I couldn't get it back on. With SD card removed the phone seems fine but the card is not recognised in any reader now and can't even be reformatted. Did the card just die (it got very hot) or has anyone else had this experience?
A possible SD card failure not caused by the phone or reader. IVe seen this happen and be reported before with certain brands. You should return the SD for a replacement (assuming you have tried all the normal ways to try and read it)
I had my 32GB class 2 do the same thing, I whipped it out and put it into a USB reader then reformatted. I fully believe that its down to not 'ejecting' the card first before unplugging it since I selected the device (card) to be read as a drive.
Just be careful dude, its a royal pain restoring everything, keep a regular backup of your card if you can spare the GB. its's real time saver.
I was a bit worred too about the heat of the device effecting the micro SD card, but from what I read its still well within the safe requirements of the card even at 40C.
most cards come with 2 years+ warrantly especially Sandisk so check that out if you've well and truely screwed the card up (it happens, sadly.)
Had this same problem yesterday with an 8gb card. Just wont but with the card in the phone. So far it has done it twice in a week , one 4gb , one 8gb, both times while I've been using HTC's music application. Don't know if its just a coincidence or not...
Do you use a task killer? Wondered if I'm shutting something I shouldn't be.
Was it a goldcard?
Thanks for the responses. No task killer active and cannot reformat the card because no reader will recognise it. Guess it has gone to the great card graveyard in the sky
May it rest in peace my friend...I sympathise and am sorry for your loss...
Before purchasing a new one make sure that it's not something with the phone. Can you live a few days with the spare 4GB card that came with the phone?Fill it and use that for a few days and see if something similar happens again.Except for if you've been using that already...
could creating a ext cache partition have anything to do with it ?
i had the same problem but managed to get most my data back first time....stupidly i formatted it and carried on using it. couple of days it died compeltly !
learnt my lesson and make sure i backup every few days- pain yes but it's the same with any data if you don't want to lose it back it up !
...premature death announcement there. After a couple of days rest in a darkened jacket pocket, the card is suddenly visible to my laptop again! Clearly on its last legs as several files corrupted and it refuses to reformat but at least I rescued most of the data.
As usual the only backup you ever need is the one you didn't do!
Try formatting with a digital camera...
I had a similar problem with a corrupt SD card in my old phone. Computer wouldn't read it, but managed to format it using a digital camera after which it worked again (and still is).
Might be worth a try before consigning it to the bin...

Last week, after rebooting my phone, I got a message in the notification tray that said "Damaged SD Card." My SD card was completely non-existent, as far as the phone was concerned. I plugged the phone into my computer and mounted USB storage. The drive showed up, but myy computer told me that the drive needed to be formatted (no data existed). I feared that I had lost all of my data. I decided to go for a hail mary and booted into CWM recovery, mounted the sdcard as USB, and run a "chkdsk /r" on the drive from within windows. It took over 2 hours to complete (32GB card), but all of my data came back! It's been about 5 days, and I haven't noticed any corruption of any kind.
I don't know what caused it initially, but I am sure glad I was able to recover it. I thought I'd post this here in case anyone else ran into the same issue. I know some of this info is posted elsewhere, but most threads involved a data recovery software.

I've experienced this problem before too after i kinda just tossed my phone up in the air and caught it (I do this when in bored). And I guess the impact with my hand was too much for the SD card slot, because then it said the SD card was damaged. All I did was take the card out, kinda blew on it like a Nintendo cartridge, and reinserted. It worked fine, and still til this day.

I tried removing/reinserting mine and had no luck... But that is definitely something that you should try first!

honestly I had the same thing happen but I fixed it a lot quicker.
If you ever have that issue again go to your into storage and it should say mount sd. Hit that and let the phone do the rest.

It can happen from a bad kernel as well. I had my SD card wiped out twice during kernel testing on my OG Epic. If you are a flashaholic, its good to backup that SD on your PC every once in a while just in case stuff happens. Corrupt files and such can cause it too

This happened after I returned to calk's ROM from that ics build that was floating around before repo went private. I used chkdsk too to recover

Ok. This is the weirdest thing ever. My mom phone was stock. She didn't really do much. All of a sudden her phone started rebooting. It just reboots out the blue. She doesn't have any unusual apps either.
A factory reset didn't do anything, so Sprint is going to give her a replacement. It'll be here Friday. So in the mean time I decided to root it to see if that would fix the problem, but it didn't. It's still rebooting.
What could be causing that problem? I rooted, and put on Blazer 4.1 GB ROM. I'm about to try an ICS ROM to see if that would help. What's strange is that even after changing the ROM, the problem persisted. I'm guessing it's hardware related?
Its just the phone . That happened to my sisters e4gt. Started rebooting. All stock. Took it into sprint. And they gave her a replacement. Now it doesnt happen.

Update: So I flashed an ICS ROM and it's not rebooting. I think I found the culprit. My mom's SD card that came with the phone wasn't reading on my computer. So I was using another one I had. I forgot to switch them out when the phone booted, but now the phone seems to be ok.
I put the SD card in my phone and my phone wouldn't read the SD card and also it went into Kernel Panic Upload Mode. So I'm guessing there's a problem with the SD card. Glad I found that out. LoL!!

Oh it doesn't? LoL!! I've had SD cards for so long that I forget. LoL!! Yea, then that makes it even worst. She had a 2GB SD card. Actually, you're right. She had my Samsung Memoir and the SD card went with that. She wanted to keep the pictures. I'm guessing the memory card died out or something. LoL!! IDK. All I know is that when I took that SD card out, the phone started working perfectly.

You should back up/move whatever files you want on that sd card to your computer and then try formatting it and check if it still causes issues.

This is an issue with our ET4g. I have this issue and found many others in other forums do too. I have found many reasons that people suggested the caused; battery, rom, SDcard, wifi, or and apps... There are many suggestions to also limit the reboots. For me, when it reboots, I make sure wifi is off or turn it off and let it start up normally. One suggested to take out sdcard when it boots up, and then insert it after it booted. I wonder if the S2 bug has anything to do with it.

When I got my E4GT I took the sd card out of my HTC Hero and put it in this phone. It worked ok for a day or two, then I started getting reboots and frozen screens. Someone in the forums suggested pulling the sd card which I did and the phone was happy again. I backed up the files on the card and reformatted it while in the S2. Never had another problem.
Blank SD card.(unsupported file system)
i try re-format it. but after awhile the problem just keep coming back.
i think the problem is the phone ( XPERIA ION OF CAUSE ) is putting something inside that cause it to have problem.
Note: i format it...(start from clean)
put some video inside. ( cause it happen before so i don't want to put a lot of things )
works fine for about a day?
i try to open the video by the photo widget, fail. video cannot be played
i reboot phone

Are you formatting the card with the phone or in your computer? Have you tried you phone with a different card? Maybe you have a damaged phone, same goes for the card. I got a 64 GB card for my phone, and had to format it with the phone before being able to use it, after that I haven't had any trouble. The only thing is that every time that I connect my phone through USB to my PC (Win7), it tells me the card is damaged and gives me the option of scanning and fixing it or ignore it. I choose ignore, but it a bit annoying to do it every time.

Your phone came with a memory card?! Mine didn't.
Back on topic, I have had similar issues. I found that is I keep the phone in mass storage mode, and dont allow the internal memory to connect to the computer my issue goes away. I have ICS installed. So long as my internal memory does not connect, my issue has not come back. Give that a shot and see if it works for you as well.

I had this issue once with my OG Dinc. The card just stopped working in the phone but still works fine in the computer to this day. I would bet on your card being faulty.
As for the Ion sd card I feel cheated as mine came with a 4gb card. ?? Got it at Boo Buy also. Lucky for me I had just picked up a 8gb card for another Dinc I acquired.
I too, have the same problem. I have to reformated my card a few times since I got the phone (just about a month). My card is fine, but after using a while, it became unuseable even in my computer. Reformat it, everything's fine but a week later, it came back! I'm on 2.3.7.

Could just be the card. I've had bad ones from the start, had good ones go bad, etc..
I have a generic card that would not work at all unless it was put in to an adapter, and then only sometimes. I've since put it into my Zoom H2 recorder where it seems it's the only place it wants to work full time.
I personally won't buy any off brand SD cards anymore, Sandisk only for me, have yet to have one of these crap out yet.
Make sure you are unmounting the phone in windows before you unplug it. That is what corrupted my card on my incredible.

I see. I'm living in Vietnam, those brand-name cards are so expensive. This card I've used for more than a year with my old Arc, class 10, without any problem. Since it goes with my new Ion, there comes problems! I'm saving money to buy a new card based on your advice! Thank you so much!

Yes, I did it all the time and sometimes I turned off the phone to take the card out for safety. Thank you!
Mine didn't come with sht! wth???
Probably is the card though, I've had similar issues in the past, none with Ion though. Sdcards can be rather fickle and hidden files can get stuck on there much like on a flash drive. I have a box full of flash drives that are irreparable.
Try replacing the card first. Also I usually let Windows repair mine when it asks. Seems to help. eb

here's a real puzzler. Today I noticed that my SD card wasn't mounting anymore. I'm rooted on stock ROM. Everything else seems to be working. It won't mount. I've tried using root Explorer and TWRP. Nothing. Thoughts? Anyone?! TWRP sees the card while I'm in recovery. Once I reboot into stock ROM, I lose it. I try to mount it, then I'm getting a 'safe to remove card' notification.

Stupid question, but have you tried physically re-seating the card? I had odd issues like that on my S2.
Other thought, can you mount the card using a PC?
I've tried reseating the card multiple times with no luck. TWRP will see the card while in recovery. But when I boot into the OS, I lose it. I'm stumped.

One random thought, and probably isn't your solution ... Is the card formatted with exFAT or ntfs. Gs4 won't natively support ntfs formatted cards. Plug it into ur pc and check the properties... Worth a shot

If this was the problem would it cause all sd cards to unmount? Or could it just effect 1?
I have a 32gb card that unmounts and remounts randomly. My 16gb card doesn't seem to have the problem.
Im not sure if the 32gb card is faulty or if it has a correctable error. So far formatting it does not help.
The difference between me and the op is that my card will mount, it will just unmount itself at a random later time.

Have you by any chance flashed a different kernel? I believe ExFAT file system is closed source and is not supported by most custom kernels, even if you're still running the stock ROM. If not, can you think of anything that you've changed between the last time you remember your card mounting and now?
Same here, plus viewing media on the card in the gallery seemed really laggy. I switched to a 16gb and have had no lag or issues with the card being mounted. The cards I got are both SanDisk Ultra cards

Back to exFat, formatted with PC, Mac back to fat, either AOKP, or touchwiz. Same issue. At first it was fine. Then slowly started dismounting and remounting. Then refused to mount...worked around the issue by formatting in exFat, mounting in TWRP.and reformatting... This seemed to fix it for about an hour, I started downloading my music from Spotify...again with dismounting... Drove me crazy...ordered Samsung 64gb

Yes, as a matter of fact. Look up at the link I posted above. Turns out it has to do with rooting and needing to flash a SetUID kernel prior to flashing Super SU. Something in there about exFAT not working. Flashed the exFAT fix and I'm up and running!

My phone is completely stock and unrooted. It's an SGH-M919. I've had it for less than a week.
I too am having an issue with the SD card. I bought a brand new 32gb PNY card, class 10. At first it mounted fine and there was no problem. I transferred files to it from my old 16gb card that was in my Sensation for 2 years.
The following morning, after the phone slept and charged for the night, the card unmounted itself. There was an error message in the notification bar. I tried repeatedly to remount the card to no avail. I reinserted it a dozen times, rebooted the phone several times with pulling the battery, but the card wouldn't mount. I then tried the card in my wife's brand new S4 (we got both phones the same day) and the card didn't work in her phone either.
I then plugged the card into my laptop and it mounted just fine, and all data was still on it. I tried it in the phone again, but it didn't mount yet again. I even reformatted the card in my laptop, but it still didn't work in either of our 2 S4's.
I went back to Frys and exchanged the card for another PNY 32gb card. It mounted in the phone just fine, and again I transferred files to it. This morning, again after a night of charging the phone, the new card was unmounted with the same error message. However, when I woke the phone up, after a few minutes the card remounted itself without having to take it out and reinsert it.
So far it's been about 7 hours and the card has stayed mounted with no issues. We'll see what happens overnight again, when the phone is charging and sleeping.
On the other hand, my old 16gb card has stayed mounted in my wife's S4 with no problems for several days now.
