Its been awhile since i was online..got the maintenance update i see all over the forums. Iv seen many different replies. I running Darkside Digital Warfare 2.7 which is gingerbread. If i allow the update to download will it brick my phone? i know it will unroot it which really doesn't bother me much since im sure i can root it after the ICS update rolls out or i might just stay stock since my flashing of roms has gone down lately. Any help would be appreciated
Safer to do it in Odin if you want the update.

You won't brick with Odin.

To put it simple.
If you.are going to be stock and update ota then do it as tmobile says. Lde then ics.
Now if your a custom rom person, then just wait till there is a flashable ics.zip and flash it.

You guys stop being confused. The update will only be available via kies and it does a version check first. It will make you do them in order.. but if your rooted already its dumb to go back for all of that bloated jazz.. just flash custom roms when they are released.

What's what? Lol ROM or odin
Is your phone rooted? If not take it to Sprint. If it is you need to go to the development section and learn what Odin is and does. Odin gives you the ability to overwrite the ROM and Modem. A fresh install if you will. Read the sticky on how to restore your phone from brick.

so after the fresh install then waht will it do? so sprint will root it? Sorry guys im not a big computer guy but thank you for the help!
Do not let Sprint know that your trying to root your phone lol download the newest one click root from the sticky in the development section and read the instruction carefully before doing anything
EDIT: newest one click being cwm 3.1.0.1
Sorry guys such a noob question but I Just got a message for the OTA el29 update from sprint... Im rooted.... Is this something I can do with out bricking my phone?... I have a custom kernel "gun slinger" with the orginal rom... what should I do?... Thanks in advance

If you have a cwm, the ota update will fail. Nothing bad will happen, it just will say there is an error, and leave you with your existing setup.
I would suggest you install one of the pre-rooted el29 packages here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433101
Then use the auto root sticky, option C, to install cwm. This will give you root, cwm and avoid the yellow triangle. From there you can install whatever you want.
Thank you very much for getting back... Instead of that I just installed The "Blazer" ROM... I thought that was the case though... And even though I have a nandriod back up, I didnt want to take the chance that I mucked it up... Btw... Blazer= awesome!

There just way too many threads regarding official ics update. So can somebody please guide me. I'm currently rooted running cm9 I want to go back and install the recent update. With the 3d it was easy because I could just place the rom in my SD card and install it. But from what I'm reading there is extra steps I need to take on the epic. Thank you for your help! God is going to bless you with at least 6 kids.

God already gave me 7 so I'll pass on the kids but...
If you want flash the OTA update, flash back to EL29 stock (search EL29 One Click). The OTA ROM has been posted here ("How to manually update..." in General Forum) so just follow the instructions (I believe rename to update.zip, then go to stock recovery and select "install update.zip") but that is from memory.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1765953 there ya go. Has every thing you need with a little reading.

And no worries man, usually when there is a firmware update we will get our hands on it and have a ROM set and ready to rock before the download from kies would even finish

Ive never ran across this problem before with the s2 or 3. Im on the stock injected firmware and want to be able to get updates without having to odin back to stock or flashing a different recovery. How would one go about this? Sorry for thread jacking but figured others will have this question. Thanks.

The previous answers cover it. I went back to stock on my S 3 for the last official ICS update, but was really a WOT. Don't have to ODIN back to stock unless you want to run on stock.
You would probably see an Odin update (which will install the firmware and and Modem when a simple ROM flash would not) pretty soon after it is OTA'd, and you could use this and not have to have the hassle of going back to stock to get it. If it is not a complete ROM, you will have to be sure you are already updated to the firmware that the OTA would be updating.

"Good news tonight for AT&T subscribers, as a number of readers are now reporting that Samsung's update to Android 4.1.1 is now available for the Galaxy S III via Kies. We've reached out to the carrier to learn whether any specific improvements are in store, but it's not like we need to tell you that users will be immersed in the goodies of Google Now and the performance enhancements from Project Butter. Word from members of xda-developers reveals that the update weighs in at a substantial 738MB. For those keeping score, AT&T's update to Jelly Bean for the Galaxy S III follows previous deployments from Sprint and T-Mobile..." -Engadget.

I think I'm going to do this. I give it two days before a custom stock ROM comes out.
Maybe is time to separate the forums?

I would just like the modem from this release since I'm enjoying the official tmobile base for now and I figure official jb modem from att would work a bit better than the other ones we have from ics

Note: There's a stock rooted jelly bean download in the how to root sticky. You don't have to update with kies and lose root.

It appears to be UCDLK3 or something along those lines. Check the end of the filename on it.

You can also use mobile odin pro and enable everroot. If you maintain root, you can use goomanager from the market to install twrp recovery. Seems like there are a number of ways to do this, I just found this the easiest way.
I downloaded from samsungupdates sites and install de .tar file with mobile odin pro... and i kept root sou if u wanna be stock but keeping root i recommend you this way its easy!

Just got my S3 2 weeks ago. Never rooted it. Figured I'd wait until JB update. (Just want to root for tethering, not interested in custom firmware or mods). Can someone post a link to or recommend the safest/easiest wait to root since JB 4.1.1 update?
Thanks
