[BUG]Discovered new bug - multi touch when charging - HTC One X

anyone experiencing this on their one x
I have attempted to record this and uploaded to youtube. In order to recreate this for yourself, make sure haptic feedback is enabled for your lock screen.
watch video from 0:22 onwards as I was struggling to record and hold the phone at the same time.
you will also have to enable show touches in development options in settings as well as keeping your charger plugged in as this is when it only happens if your charger is plugged in (mains charger the white one that the one x comes with)
here is the link
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5paZpvqKck&feature=youtu.be
I have not tested this with usb charging from pc/laptop
It happens when you try to unlock your lockscreen to fast, or pressing screen to fast in different areas.
I always prefer my phones to have show touch enabled so I can see where I'm touching if I'm browsing etc. and this is the only way I discovered this bug
EDIT: it turns out the default white charger that comes in the box of the HTC one x is causing the problem, if I use any other mains charger I am not having these issues. very weird!!

Checked mine and i cannot confirm it. Tho im running cm9.

could be kernel related, did you try with charger plugged in and charging the phone with show touch enabled and lockscreen enabled?

Your video made me dizzy
Don't use your phone plugged in?
BTW, I don't have that issue on my One X, at all.

It's not new, It's been mentioned on here a few times before, I've had this bug since day one (ROM/Kernel makes no difference btw, it's a hardware problem I believe).
Strangely, it only happens when using the wall charger that came with the device, charging via USB doesn't seem to screw up the touchscreen.

Mine also is quite difficult to use sometimes when charging, fortunately the HTC wall charger is by my bed and only used when I am asleep, the others I use in general while charging are older HTC devices charges or BB and the issue doesn't occur IIRC.

Happens on my HTC One X too. Also happend on my LG Optimus 2X. Too bad :-/

yep defo a charger problem

First time I've seen it with official HTC charger, but a known issue with cheap eBay chargers. Looks like HTC's build quality issues have spread to peripherals.
It happens when the rectifier and dc smoothing in the charger isn't very good, and the phone is receiving lots of dc ripple or 'noise'.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DpDyMykRH9M&feature=youtube_gdata_player
Edit: Serious afterthought guys, noisy chargers also cause battery heating issues. All those with this issue ditch your HTC charger immediately. You can't afford to damage this battery. Had a cheap Hong Kong charger on my Desire S once. It cooked my battery.
Does anyone have access to a CRO? Perhaps a video of the output of this charger to HTC would be in order.

this is a serious issue,
im now using a nokia charger which is 5V and 1200mv which i used to use on my n97, issue is now gone,
weird that htc are letting this bad quality through

I think I'm having the same issue as what's described here. When my One X is charging via the charger it came with, sometimes it'll get way hotter than it should, and the screen becomes very slow to respond or it has issues detecting touches. It's never happened when charging from my PC, and is briefly resolved by a reboot.
Haven't yet tried a different AC charger though. I honestly thought it had something to do with the heat. I've been turning my phone off at nights when it's charging on AC because it was getting hot.

Hi,
I found a similar issue when my One X is plugged into a Nokia charger that came with N900.
When plugged, the touch screen seems to be defaulting to the left side and any touch on the other side of the screen causes a multi touch (or whatever you wanna call it). The problem does not occur when plugged into the cable that came with the One X (nor USB neither electric grid).
The video can describe better:
watch?v=Smr2-O92EzM
(the forum does not allow me to post links yet, so just copy & paste to youtube - thanks)
The phone is a week old, not rooted yet.
Not looking for help, just thought this might help any investigation.
Cheers

Use the official charger provided with the One X. Crudely put, the charge is "leaking" across the touchscreen.
My wife is unable to use her phone (Samsung GS3), unresponsive to touch, when using my HTC charger. But works fine using her charger.

I am facing this issue too. I was using a third party charger. Decided to abandon it for the sake of the battery.

I get this with every charger I use when I plug it in at work. Its caused by a dirty electrical outlet. Mostly found in old buildings and old outlets. If people actually use the search function in this forum you would know this....

Touch screen extremely unresponsive when charging

So when the unresponsive screen when grounded issue came about, I didn't really notice the problem much myself. However, recently, and I'm not sure when this started, the screen has become horribly unresponsive when charging any time! Doesn't matter if it's on desk, in my hand, stock charger, 3rd party charger, etc., if it's charging at all, the touch screen only accepts half or less of my inputs, making typing impossible. Is this due to the last software update? Anyone else experience this issue? I would exchange the phone, but not if it's not going to help anything.
this happens to me when i use my cheap ebay charger
The fps lifting kernels fix this.
+1 for symtoms seen when using a wonky charger/cable.
+1 due to cheap charger - anyone know why this happens? is the OEM usb cable different spec from the cheap ones?
Hate to beat a dead horse, but the same happens when I plug my phone into the charger I got from eBay. Kind of disappointing, considering that I would otherwise be able to charge two batteries at the same time.
I notice this issue with the stock charger.
I believe the issue was when its not grounded..
Being plugged in is just about the most grounded your phone can get.
That's not the problem.
Starting to do it to me also now.
Just to be clear, this happens to me with the STOCK charger.

I'm having the same issue. i just chocked it up to the new kernel.
one thing i did notice is it seems to be intermittent. Yesterday night, it worked fine. this morning(conveniently when my alarm went off) i could NOT get the dismiss thingy to slide down.
Anyone else experiencing this? I do think it got worse after last software update. Would be nice if the next one improved things.
I emailed support, they did not say anything about it being a known issue, and suggested a factory reset. If that doesn't help, they recommended using my warranty. Would like to hear from more people before going through with the reset.
It happens to me when charging via outlet. Charging via USB connected to computer does not produce the issue.
I think it has to do with grounding.
Same thing happens to me! I noticed it with my aftermarket wall charger.
Bringing this back up, happens to me with a Stock charger.
Is it really the kernel? :\
@Person who said charging is the most grounded, the stock charger is not grounded ( in AU anyway ) and therefore it is the LEAST grounded.
ive noticed this happening over the past month or so. i've got to admit i've only really noticed this when its plugged into a usb cord i got off ebay. relieving to think it might only be an issue with it being a cheap cable and not the phone but i'll verify tonight with the stock cable.
I've been plagued by this problem for weeks and just discovered that it only happens when charging. I use the stock charging cable and wall adapter. I'm very, very happy to know what the problem is. I'm going to start testing this at various locations.
EDIT: I've tried this on both the wall adapter at work and on my work computer's usb. Same problem, though it seems worse when plugged into the wall outlet.
The touchscreen is fine on my sprint brand car charger and on the usb charger on my laptop. However, it starts missing taps when I plug my usb cable into my usb car charger. I'm going to best buy tonight to buy a different charger and see if that helps.
Sent from my Virus Infected Evo using the XDA app.
I have these issues as well with the stock charger and cable regardless of which kernel I use.

Non responsive screen on USB charging

I have an untouched, unbranded Defy on 2.21 which works fine until I connect it to a usb lead for charging whereupon the touch screen stops responding and usually remains like this for about 30 seconds after I have unplugged the usb cable.
Until this morning when I had had it connected overnight to a cradle by the bed and could not turn the alarm off. I ended up pulling the battery, but at least I was awake by then, I suppose.
My question is: is this a common problem, and if so is there a cure?
And a supplementary one: would a custom ROM, CM7 or Miui, solve the problem?
Any help greatfully received!
my defy behaves exactly the oposite way. When connecting with USB cable I am able to ude the phone properly, everything works fine all applications' responsiveness are great. However, when charging the battery using the power cable, the phone starting hanging on every application. Everything starts getting slow and a simple touch takes 5 or 6 seconds to retrieve any action from the phone.
I dont know if this a common behavior for the defy neither if has any fix for that, i got used to it so i always charge my phone when it is off.
I have this issue too, but a little different. When I use a different charger than the original one, the screen is stuck, but I think, it is charging. When I use the standard charger, it works perfektly. I can't explain why.
By the way: I'm using CM7 with the nightly from yesterday
i am also using CM7, but the beta 6 version. I will try this test. I have two different charges, one original and another not, i will see if it behaves the same way you are saying. i will post my results soon.

same here..
Possibility of charger voltages rating differences giving out the output here I guess.
The original charger has been calibrated with just enough voltages/current to supply the phone during charging whilst the non-original charger doesn't have the exact voltage/current needed by the phone during charging thus giving the phone all sort of problems. One may see the non-original charger has label the right rating as per the original label but that doesn't give any warranty it work exactly like the original charger.
I recomend to use only original charger to avoid any damages may occur to the phone.
If one using original charger and still having phone behaving strangely. It may be caused by the phone itself(hardware issue) or the original charger(manufacturing defect) which by this mean you're one of the unlucky owner.... get a replacement ASAP..
I'm not sure about running firmware as such Eclair, Froyo or custom rom would do anything about charging side effect here.
I thought, that an intelligent power management only takes as much current as it needs. My adapter has 2 outputs (max 500mA, max 1000mA). I would expect the phone to work with any of these. When I plug in my navigation unit it works perfectly.
I'll take the adapter with me and try it with the original Defy of a friend. If it works with his phone its a software issue if not I'll have to look out for an alternative charging my phone in the car.
i deeply tested last night, charging with the original charges let the phone 100% useable without any lags while the usb charger kept me having lags and keeping the phone without any good responsiveness. No more usb chargers anymore
same here, original charger (btw, that is ALSO a USB charger...) works, but aftermarket charger, screen no (or little) response.
when connect to pc, works so-so.

don't expect every gadgets will work on any universal charger. The exact rating counts on a delicate devices specially on touch screen product. Grounding too must be equally the same from the charger to the phone which would result non side effect on using while charger is connected. Avoid using local based charger if possible as it could save your phone from damaging. Buy original if you really need it.

this happen to me too sometimes, but not all the time

Evo charging lag?

This isn't a problem but more of just a general question. So does anyone else experience your phone kinda lagging or having screen sensitivity issues (have to press hard on screen to scroll) while having the phone charge? This is like a 50/50 thing sometimes it does this sometimes not. So post your experiences with this

Yes indeed. In my case, it's caused by my HTC USB cable that came with the phone. When I use the charger from my old LG ENV3, i never get that problem at all. As soon as I switch to the HTC cable, it's nearly un-usable whilst plugged in. It's odd, because the HTC cable works fine for charging and transferring data, so I don't know, but there's something wonky with it.
Hmm interesting

Nope, you're not. It can certainly become rather annoying if you're trying to use your phone while it's charging.
Yea, using swype is IMPOSSIBLE when plugged in.
I never used to have this problem before, so I wonder if this is something that comes with age of the phone. I've run all kinds of roms/kernels and never had this issue until maybe a month ago. But I think I've successfully narrowed it down.
You need a charger that outputs 5v at 1000mA. Any more or less and you'll get the wonky response. I have an 800mA and a 1.5A charger at 5v and I get the laggy response. And I took it a step further and noticed that I get maximum charging speed (regardless of kernel, I've tried stock and custom/SBC kernels) with a 28/24 AWG or 24/24 AWG micro USB cable. If you still rock the stock HTC charger/cable combo you should be golden.

i don't think its from age of the phone because i just got my phone in december (hw 0004) and i am still using the stock htc charger/cable. so idk its a mystery. nice work finding all that out tho its good to know that i am not the only person who experiences this haha.
I only get the problem when I'm plugged into A/C power, but not when I'm plugged into the D/C car charger... I think it has something to do with how the outlet is grounded. Maybe the touchscreen gets confused by getting grounded through the charging port rather than through your body. I'm basically making this up based on hazy memories from an E&M class I took about 8 years ago, but I think it's close. Anybody with any actual knowledge care to correct me?

[Q] Charger messing with touch calibration

So I have this charger for work : http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001LRPN0S/ref=oh_o04_s00_i00_details
And when I have the phone plugged in and I try to use the touch screen, it doesn't register my touch correctly. Sometimes it thinks I'm tapping an inch higher, or left/right of where I was actually tapping.
When I unplug the phone it works great, nor does this happen at home with a different charger.
Is there a specific reason this happens/is anyone else having this problem?
EDIT: Mods, please move to the Q&A. Thanks!

It could mean that the charger is not supported by the phone. Yes, I know it sounds ridiculous and/or stupid. But I had the same problem with a 1A charger from Nokia on my Nexus S (I checked 3 different chargers in shop and all were making the phone act like it was drunk, lol). Changed the charger to a 1A HTC one and it worked. So dunno, change the charger and see if it helps.
Yep this apparently happens to quite a few smartphones on aftermarket chargers. I saw several similar reports on the desire board when I was on that phone, but never had it myself on any of my phones.
I had the same issue with my atrix with a generic charger from best buy. I don't have the same issue with my nexus but I've definitely seen it before.

Yep, have that same problem from third party chargers.
my generic charger does the same thing. i was getting very mad that my screen was acting up. glad this is not a big issue. guess ill use the original charger. also, has anyone noticed that the screen goes crazy if you have to many finger prints on it? i have to clean my screen to make it work....
On the manual that comes with the GSM Galaxy Nexus Samsung says:
"While the device is charging, the touch screen may not function due to an unstable power supply. If this happens, unplug the travel adapter from the device."
I guess that means your charging is feeding the phone an unstable current.
I would not use such a thing and will stick to Samsung's charger.
This happens to me on my Incredible, but may have to do with 500 vs. 1000 amps... Not sure...

Hi,
Iam from UAE also, Al Ain.
Where you bought and when?
Is it made in Taiwan or China?
Hey.. I guess that's your first charging.. phone will do well if you don't mess with your phone at the first charge and don't run any applications.. after few charges the phone tends to cool down gradually.. my phone yesterday boomed till 55C and I've encountered the same problem as you regarding screen.. But hold on for few days.. ( hopefully it'll come out good )

and just noticed today my phone hit all time low 34C
I also has this problem, had my phone for two days and got the same error this morning when using it during charging.. there better be a fix for this asap or im returning this and going back to my galaxy nexus

I have seen this many times with my old Sensation. It would do that if you plugged it into a power source with the wrong voltage or amps. I bought a travel charger with a USB plug on it and whenever I connected my Sensation it would go berserk, unresponsive to touch and screen flickering and jerking.

I don't think its necessarily HTC guys. My SGS has done it since day one as well.. its a nightmare browsing/texting when plugged in, it even once set an alarm by itself thinking I was touching the screen when it was just on my bedside table. And spammed my ex with the letter m and sent it to her on Whatsapp haha
Known to happen if you use a faulty or unofficial cheap charger. Tried using a different charger?

I had the same issue with my Motorola Milestone (Droid). Actually the whole casing felt to be slightly statically charged when connected to the charger.
This might be solved by using a different adapter, but it could also be the general electric layout of the room/house, which can cause non-neutral charges on the "ground" side of the charger. Static charges seriously mess with a capacitive screen.
I don't have the problem with my One X in the Netherlands.
Well this is intresting as i have the same problem. i will need to try another charger as i have the same problem.
Well i have tried two HTC chargers, tried 3 diffrent wall sockets and 3 USB cables all show the same problem. Too me it looks like the screen is not grounded. Much like my HTC sensation which need a little bit of alaminuim film to ground correctly.

i have noticed this on desire HD - same problem - with a unofficial cheap charger with USB port. switched back to official HTC charger from that point, all good.
so - mostly the charger is faulty or expects a different voltage level (110v Vs 240v thing)
Well i just tried the wifes blackberry charger, works fine. How come None of the offical chargers work.
Blackberry Charger
Input: 100~240v, 150mA 50-60Hz, 10-20va
Output: 5v 750mA
HTC chargers
Input: 100~240v, 200mA, 50-60hz
Output: 5v 1A
So it appears the HTC chargers output more voltage but surely this sort of thing would be wide spread.
Called HTC tech support they didn't have a clue so my case is being passed to their 2nd line team.

Same here, I am, facing this issue with the official htc charger. When using a blackberry charger this issue does not happen
i've had the same issue with other phones.. i fixed using a Nokia Charger with 1.250 mAh which is also superfast in charging the phone
First charge with mine last night and mine suddenly went laggy/unresponsive when I put it on charge. I also ran a quadrant and only got around 3600 when I'd normally get 4900?!
Wasn't sure if this was due to being on very low battery though (despite being on charge)?
I guess the charger mess upp the capacitive touchscreen, either because of electric fields messing with the sensitive field that sense the finger, or bad grounding in the touch-panel.
I had similar problem with my old Legend. If i had it laying on certain materials (cloth etc) the screen became unresponsive.
so this is not a problem with the phone, it just a design "feature" of having a capacitive touch screen.
And yeah, the charger might be the cullprint. Either it has diffrent pin-out in the charger causing bad grounding or something else.
btw, the voltage is 5 volt on all chargers. the current is diffrent though. I dont think the phone charge with more then 200-450mAH considering it takes 4-5 hours to charge fully.
I've not experienced any screen issues while charging with the screen. I've charged it with the official charger, an iphone charger, a touchpad charger and an xperia play charger.
My old desire used to do this if using certain chargers in some sockets at work.
I'll see what mine is like again later when I charge it.
Has anyone had a pop-up saying something along the lines of 'Activity consuming more battery than the charge is giving' ?
Not in those exact words but that's basically what it said. I was watching a flash video with my phone on charge at the time.
