[Q] new gnex, 4.0.2 up to date - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Just got new gnex today with version 4.0.2 build number ICL53F:i9250JPLA1
When ever i try to update it says up to date?
My xoom in on 4.04 already
Ia there any official 4.0.4 update?

Not sure if you're on GSM or LTE, but this worked for me on LTE(i515).
1. From your phone, head into Settings > Apps > All.
2. Search for "Google Services Framework".
3. Once found, tap on it and choose “Force stop.”
4. Then choose “Clear data.”
5. Back out of Apps to your About page in Settings and check for the System update.
You may have to repeat the steps a couple of times.

[Q] incompatible with your phone.. marketplace apps

hi all
Since this morning i have noticed that all of a sudden quite a lot of apps are no longer able to be downloaded from the marketplace... it just says for apps like Facebook and Google Maps, "This app is incompatible with your 3 Samsung GT-I9100."
Is this a carrier issue? or an Android Marketplace issue?
It's the same whichever ROM i am using at the moment... it was fine yesterday but since then... a no-go.
I have tried using market enabler... nothing...
Downloading from Laptop (via Marketplace in browser) .... same problem...
Any ideas?
I'm getting this with some apps to.

responses from Android Marketplace Helpdesk
Hi there,
Thanks for writing in to me today. I apologize if you're having some download issues with Android Market today. I don't know of any specific issues that may be causing the problems you may be having. Let's do the following troubleshooting steps to fix it:
- Cancel and restart the download(s)
- Reboot your device
- Sign in and out of Google Talk repeatedly to restore connection to our servers:
1. Go to your device’s app launcher, and press the Talk app
2. If you’re already signed into Talk, press Menu, and then touch Sign out
3. Launch Talk again to sign in (if you are unable to sign in, please let me know)
- Clear your Market cache and data (Settings > Applications > Manage applications > All tab > Market > Clear cache and Clear data)
- Ensure there is at least 20MB of free space on your device
- Try your download(s) using both WiFi and network (3G/4G) connections
- Try to initiate your download from the Web (market.android.com) instead of the device
- Confirm that there is strong connectivity on your device, and contact your mobile service provider if you aren't connected
- Uninstall Market updates by visiting:
Settings > Applications > Manage Applications> All tab > Market > Uninstall updates
If none of these steps resolve the issue, please let me know, and I will continue to investigate the problem - any other detail you can provide about the issue and how/when it occurs will be extremely helpful.
Best regards,
Jim

I can download some apps fine... But all of a sudden a vast number are suddenly not compatible with my device... I.e. Facebook and google maps. It also states it is incompatible when attempting to download from my desktop.
These apps were compatible yesterday but now they are not.
Nothing has changed on my device
Can you help?
Thanks

Hello again,
Thanks for writing back. I don't see any reason why those apps would now be showing up as incompatible on your Galaxy. Is this a new Galaxy device for you? I see it being registered with your account today for the first time, but no previous entries for a Galaxy S II device on your [email protected] account. The last device on your account I see before the Galaxy is an HTC HD2.
You mentioned you performed a factory data reset before this issue starting occurring. It's possible something didn't go quite right with that. I recommend you perform a factory reset one more time on your device if possible. Please note that this will reset your device to its original state. While your media content (photos, music, etc.) will not be deleted from the SD card, applications and their related data will be uninstalled.
Before the factory reset, make sure that your contacts are synced to your Google account by logging into Gmail from a computer and verifying if your contacts appear there. If your contacts are not synced, then I recommend updating your sync settings at Settings > Accounts and Sync and choosing either AutoSync or touching the account you would like to sync and choosing "Sync Contacts."
Along with syncing contacts, please back up any important application data and/or settings by navigating to Settings > Privacy and selecting "Back up my data'"and "Automatic restore."
To perform a factory reset:
1) Go to Home > Menu > Settings > Privacy (or Phone storage; depends on the device)
2) Press "Factory data reset"
3) Press "Reset phone" (or "Reset tablet")
After you perform the factory reset, make sure you sign into your device with the same primary Google Account you were using before. If this doesn't resolve the issue, please let me know so I can continue to investigate. Have a great day!
Regards,
Jim

Hi, did you ever fix this? My phone is in the same state. No Facebook, no Google maps, and most other apps wont install - "This app is incompatible with your 3 Samsung GT-I9100."
I had the same problem, but my problem was due to changed DPI settings in my SGS2.
I had it on 222 and 225 but Market did not work, put back 240 on DPI and it works.
Market doesn't like multi DPI it seems :-(
Thank you - that's exactly what it was. When I set it back to 240 I had 34 market updates available. Probably is why a change of DPI is not practical on the SGS2.
Thank you again
Use old market and everything works fine
Send from my HyperDroid using Tapatalk
Every time I change the DPI using root explorer It gets back to original 230
any idea??
I need to change it coz half of my apps aren't working because of this issue I believe
n I tried the umount SD thing it didn't work for me
My rom is the Resurrection Remix ics Rom v9.1 Ultimate XXLB 4.0.3 Full-Wipe
n I tell ya it's coooooooooooool except for this bug

Isnt the default dpi 240??
Anyways... I didnt use the root explorer method... I just use this...
ROM Toolbox Lite from Google Play
Performance>build.prop Tweaks> LCD Density
Apparently, the above mentioned solution didnt help me either... I would just change back to default dpi... Wait a while... Update my apps... Then change it back... Troublesome... But its worth it i guess... FYI, im on foxhound ROM and i set my dpi at 182...

What are the updates? Total confusion for me...

I jut got a new update on my Pixel 2XL.
It is in the "Google Play system update" required restart.
What are "Google play system updates"?
Under "Settings" - "Security" - "Security Updates" there is the System update.
Under "Settings" - "Security" - "Google Play system update" there is the something else.
Based on the HELP:
See which Android version you have
Open your phone's Settings app.
Near the bottom, tap System And then Advanced And then System update.
See your "Android version" and "Security patch level."
Get the latest Android updates available for you
When you get a notification, open it and tap the update action.
If you cleared your notification or your device has been offline:
Open your phone's Settings app.
Near the bottom, tap System and then Advanced and then System update.
You'll see your update status. Follow any steps on the screen.
Get security updates and Google Play system updates
Most system updates and security patches happen automatically. To check if an update is available:
Open your device’s Settings app.
Tap Security.
Check for an update:
To check if a security update is available, tap Security update.
To check if a Google Play system update is available, tap Google Play system update.
Follow any steps on the screen.
So...
Security updates = System updates
Play System update = Security updates
???
Total confusion...
Now I got an update but there is no changelog.
How can I know what was installed, changed?
https://www.techrepublic.com/article/why-the-new-android-update-system-might-confuse-users/
When Google announces updates they post the list of fixes along with it. They don't send a changelog to the device when sending an update.

Can someone clarify what all the DIFFERENT update menus in Settings are?

Im trying to ensure I'm on the latest version of our device! Model - LM-G820UM, Software Version - G820U20d
Searching "update" in the main settings menu on my LG G8 Spring Unlocked brings up the following results:
https://imgur.com/UGKs9ip
From those results,
Clicking "Update Center" brings up this:
https://imgur.com/FuQaE5F
^ This appears to update all the LG apps/bloatware crap imo
This is where it gets confusing:
Clicking "Google Play system update bring up this, telling me I'm on the March 1st, 2020 Security update:
https://imgur.com/nXhuUwv
However, clicking "Security Update" (main settings menu, right below "Google Play system update"), tells me I'm on December 1st, 2019 security patch level...?:
https://imgur.com/KCf429q
So naturally I tried to manually check if there are any available update, I select "System Updates" from the main settings menu (see first screenshot) which brings up this:
https://imgur.com/8ZSIS3P
and then select Update LG Software - update client initiated LG Software - which FORCE CLOSES AND SENDS ME TO THE HOME SCREEN.
So what's the difference between Google Play System Update and Security Update, and can someone tell me what happens when you guys open up System Updates > Update LG Software, does it force close for you too?

I mean, as long as when you check for update in the "update center" and you're on the latest it's good. Idk about the rest of the stuff, but that's all you need to worry about.

I am stuck on a beta version and don't have that menu, but I can assure you that update center is all you need to pay attention to.

How to disable stock rom updates without root?

So i got A29 build and i dont want any updates. I have turned of aito night update, i have turned off auto system update in developer options but i still keep getting proposals to install an update like twice a day. That is annoying. How can i kill an app so taht would stop bugging me? Thanks!
I am sure I do not know the best ways, but here are the ways I have written down so far (I too, never want any updates). Looks like 1,2 and 3 require no root, and 6 is just a good point to remember:
1 - check "Software Update" screen: (Settings > Software Update)
2 - check “Automatic system updates” screen:
a - Settings > About Phone > Software Information > tap "Buld Number" 7 to 10 times to enable "Developer Mode"
b - Settings > Developer options > Automatic system updates
3 - purchase and sideload the Package Disabler Pro app (disables OTA forever)
4 - on AmazonKindle, deleting the /system/etc/security/otacerts.zip will prevent updates since their signatures can't be verified by the device
5 - chown root and chmod 755 the /cache partition can do the same as above (but will it affect recovery?)
6 - while you work on a phone to disable the updates, do not forget not to insert a SIM and not to connect to WiFi, untill the OTA is fully blocked / disabled.
As for how to get rid of the NAG about the updates already downloaded and waiting for the installation, i THINK you might want to wipe cache? Because that's where they are stored while waiting?
It is good that you do not have the A/B system device, where the damn updates are installed on the fly!
If nothing works, this is why I always need root. Because the manufacturer pushes me to, leaves me no way out to just peacefully coexist, they just have to force feed their updates to us. Good luck bro.

How To Guide [How To] Update Sharp Aquos R6 Outside Japan - Docomo Version - Without Factory Reset

It's been said that Docomo phone are easier to update, only Japan VPN needed. But in reality it's not that simple. Even after using VPN, most of the time you wont be able to find OTA update through system update. Sure factory reset can help you to get update, but keep resetting phone for each update is unproductive and bothersome.
And nobody bother to actually write down the detail instruction on how to update Docomo phone (in this case is Aquos R6)
So here you go, the needed steps to update without factory reset your phone.
1. Download Proton VPN, it's Japan server is fast and free
2. Take out SIM card from the phone (it will automatically restarted by doing so)
3. Connect to fast WiFi
4. Open Proton VPN and connect to Japan server
5. Turn off WiFi but don't kill/close your VPN app
6. Go to Setting, type in search field : "Google Services Framework" , tap it, choose Storage, and do Clear All Data & Clear Cache
7. Now search again, for "Google Play Services" , and choose storage again, tap on Manage Space and choose "Clear All Data"
8. Go to System Setting again and change your region to Japan,
9. Now connect back to WiFi
10. Check Proton VPN status on notification, make sure it's back connected to Japan Server
11. Now go to System Update in setting and tap "Check for update"
12. That's it, you will be able to get the OTA update and installing it now.
Thank you for your help. I have succeeded to update to Android 12 for my R6. One thing here, I cannot find where yo change current region to Japan, however, it still works on system update.

hello mate
i have been using docomo fujitsu F52A, followed your guide and upgraded from oldest buil number of android 10 to newest build number of android 11, but after that i could not upgrade to android 12 by the same process, always get ''newest firmware'' on phone though android 12 has existed on Docomo website, any advices ? thanks
I found this after ONE YEAR looking for a solution.
I'm stuck on old version but I'm using a Huawei P30 Pro, locked to DOCOMO and can't upgrade.
I've tried following steps but, stuck on finding " Google Services Framework" , it just doesn't appear there .
Current version is Android Emui 9.1
Please, can somebody help me out? It's been driving me nuts.

Sometimes you just need to try again,
latest update not always appear right away in my case as well. Sometimes the clearing data sequences also matter.
If it doesnt appear, just reboot first and start the step from beginning again.

Google translate is your friend. Lol
I can't find it but I do get a notification on phone (DOCOMO UPDATER) saying there is an update but whenever I try to update it says I need to connect to DOCOMO network. Even with VPN opened.
Hi all, close to ordering an R7 but nervous at the outlay if I then have issues updating, so a couple of quick questions:
1. Should the above work for softbank too?
2. If I have to factory reset, how do I use a vpn service without adding a Google account?
3. I can get a prepaid softbank sim but in theory it doesn't work abroad... However will it still work for these purposes, of the phone seeing its a softbank and updating?
It likely won't he my daily phone but one to use when on trips taking photos, so it's not the end of the world if I have to factory reset to do updates.

Just updated my Softbank Aquos R3 without having to fully reset it from S2006 to S2007. (Previously did a full reset.)
Then updated a friend's Softbank Aquos R2: S1008 > S1009 > S1010 > S1011 > S1012 > S1013 > S2002 [Upgrade] > S2003 > S2004 > S2005.
