[Q] cleanGb update procedure - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Im running an MTD version of CleanGb for months now. I'm not sure if its 1.05 or 1.1 (the zip file on the sd card simply says CleanGB-MTD-1.zip).
Here is the problem: recently my phone has been acting up, eating battery, slowing down, etc. When I tried to power cycle it I either get stuck in a SAMSUNG reboot loop, or it goes to the CWM screen. I pulled the SD card thinking it maybe corrupt but it still took two battery pulls to get it to boot. I put the sdCard back in and have not been able to boot now.
So I'm not sure if the card is bad or something in the system is corrupt. I have not been able to load the GMAIL via the app store for a month or two now.
Anyway I was thinking of upgrading my CleanGB to see if that wipes over the issue. If I manual copy the latest 1.1.2 zip to my SD card (stick it in a PC and copy to /downloads) can I boot to CWM and do an "install from SD card? Will this wipe out my existing apps/data? I know I need to do the wipe cache/dalvik thing. I'm just no looking forward to entering all my email accounts, facebook, re-install apps,.....
Thanks
Jim M.

Only way to not keep the issues your having is to start over.

Edit : This was a little vague sorry.
You will want to download a new ROM if you like gingerbread i will suggest the Peoples ROM 2.2 you will want the MTD version as you are already on MTD. It should be the very first link in the thread Here: The Peoples ROM. Then use this process to install it.
WARNING: This will remove all data, including apps, text messages, contacts saved to the Phone and not Google. etc. So if you are fond of these titanium backup them but for the apps only restore the apps data that are absolutely necessary.
1. Reboot to recovery, either through the power menu option or powering off and holding the camera button, volume down, and Power button until the Sammy screen appears.
2. Once in recovery Wipe Data/Factory Reset.
3. Go into mounts and storage and Format /system
4. Go into advanced and Wipe Davlik Cache
5. Install Zip from SD card, then Choose Zip from SD card.
6. Find the "The-Peoples-ROM-2.2.zip" or whatever it is called.
7. Install it
8. When its finished Hit the back and reboot system now.
Once thats done go ahead and re-setup your phone.. you shouldnt run into any problems from here on out. Typically any problems you receive is from corrupt data.

Like I said, starting over is hopefully not the only option.
I actually got the phone to boot so I'm currently making a titatnium backup of everything to have just in case. I also stuck my sdcard into my PC and copied everything off it so I'm probably going to reformat the sdcard (in the phone) and then copy everything back.
Since GMAIL seems to be the only app with issues (not being able to download an update) updating to any new ROM should overwrite it.
The question still remains, if I update from cleanGB 1.05/1.1 to the latest will everything get wiped out or will only the system files get wiped?
thanks

If you want to be free from any problems.. the only way to go is to wipe clean and start fresh... but if you MUST you can wipe cache and Davlik and flash it... i dont recommend it but if you like to run into odd problems go ahead.

It's the only way to be sure otherwise you are going to waste days of chasing your bugs.
And you pressed "yes this is a question"
Guess which subforum it belongs in.

Sorry for posting in the wrong spot, I wasn't paying attention. I also see my last reply crossed paths with Uber's reply and edit update, so Uber, thanks for the info and suggestions. I've been working with computers for 30 years so I'm very familiar with the "format and re-install" option for fixing things. On the phone side I play around every 3 or 4 months so when something comes up I completely forget what I did last time, or the method has been updated 3 times.
So how do you power users handle this? I only have 47 apps installed according to app-store and if I lose my Angrybirds high score or my drawsomething count I'm not too heartbroken. But I have 3 email accounts, a dozen wi-fi networks entered, a Facebook account, A Google account, an Amazon account, ringtones, notification alerts, etc... To go back through and re-enter all this info is a real pain and takes time. I run Titanium backup but I think you can only safely restore app data, not system app data.
I've read some posts on these forums and I see people commenting "yeah i went to CM9 beta 3 last week, but came back to CleanGB for stability. I'm downloading peoples ROM right now to try for a bit but will switch to CM9 beta 4 as soon as its out". This means re-entering tons of passwords and setup info every week. Wither these guys have too much time or there is a better way.
Thanks again.
Jim M.

Use Titanium for your angry birds data. Google and Amazon are saved on their site. You can restore your wifi data to TPR from CleanGB. But you should set up your emails again because the FC09 version did not like older versions of data when I tried. Most everything else just restore apps not data. And us power users learn to delete apps we don't want and set up our emails pretty fast after the 20th wipe or so when making and testing a ROM...lol. I did CM9 clean the first time, contacts are on google anyway, and had it working pretty well in an hour then added apps as I needed them over a couple of days.

It's a good opportunity to clean house on useless apps. I basically did the same thing Kenny did when I moved to CM9, and it's amazing how much crap you don't bother reinstalling.

Step by step to flash CM7 from stock without losing data

I did a lot of reading before I did this to be sure I wouldn't lose anything. Here's the step by step for others, since I was unable to find it all in one place. This is for the MT4G/Glacier, no idea if the process is similar on other phones. You should probably still read, but I couldn't find any of this all in one place:
If you flash, here's what you need:
- Rooted phone (if you need to root, search for the gfree method, it's the easiest)
- ROM Manager from the Market. Get the premium version.
- TitaniumBackup from the Market.
- Sync turned on for your contacts and calendars in your google account.
1. Go into TitaniumBackup, set the option to store the settings on the SDCard. Go into Backup/Restore, hit menu, and run the batch to do a full backup of system and user apps/data.
2. Go into ROM Manager. At the top, click the option to install ClockworkRecovery. Make sure it installs version 3.0.0.5. Then click the option to reboot into recovery mode. In recovery, make a ROM backup of your existing ROM. It will store on the SD card. Reboot back into the OS.
3. Go back into ROM Manager, scroll down to Download ROM's. You should see CM7 Nightlies in there. Download the latest build. It will ask you if you want to also download the GAPPS package, grab that also. When it's done, it will ask you what you want to do... just cancel. Go to reboot in recovery mode.
4. In recovery:
- Wipe/Factory Reset
- Clear cache partition
- Advanced -> clear Dalvik cache
- On main screen, install ZIP from SD
- Navigate to sdcard->clockworkmod->downloads->teamdouche and select the CM7 zip for your phone that was downloaded
- When that is done, install another zip from sd, go into the goo.inside.me directory and install GAPPS zip
- Reboot phone from main menu
5. Enter your gmail creds that you used for your primary account from before
6. Cancel the additional downloads thing when it pops up, this will pop up again later after you enable wireless
7. Go into ROM Manager, Select the Fix Permissions option, reboot (wifi won't work unless you do this)
8. Enable wifi and join to your network
9. Eventually you will get the popup again. Select the stuff that you want installed.
It will pull down all of your apps from the market and install them. If you want to restore user data for the apps, you can go into titanium and click on the app, and restore it with the data. Don't do this until it's done updating from the market. Do NOT restore system level stuff. You will cause problems if you restore system level stuff from 2.2 or earlier on 2.3.x.
You should also install SetCPU from the market, set to start on boot, set conservative mode, and create a screen off profile that limits to 368mhz/conservative. In advanced, leave the defaults, except change the cpu up threshold to 75, and the scaling percent to 11 or 12. Massive battery improvements. You can overclock with this also, mine is only overclocked to around 1100mhz. Some people are running 1800mhz. I heard smartass mode instead of conservative is also good, but haven't tried it.
Keep in mind that if you have an HTC phone with the Sense Framework, you won't have that anymore. So if you liked the Sense dialer (which I did), you can't get it. The stock dialer is functional, but not the best. DialerOne and Dialer2 look the most interesting, but they still aren't as good. If you have CSipSimple installed, remove it. CM7 has SIP built into it, and CSipSimple confuses the phone when trying to make calls. If you liked the Sense clock widget, you can get a replacement, search for Beautiful Widgets on the market. The built in camera app is not Sense either, but does all the same things. The Gallery is awesome, best gallery I've ever seen (stacks that you can pull apart and flip through, very cool).
If GPS doesn't work, download GPS Status from the market and use it to clear the A-GPS data and cache. It's the only app that can do it. It's free.
Also, if you want to go back to your previous ROM, you can flash back with the ROM Manager backup that you made. The only thing is, you'll have to downgrade the clockwork recovery bootloader to 2.5.1.2 first. You can do this by flashing a zip from your SD card. The zip is available somewhere on these forums. I don't have a link, but you can find it by searching a bit. The 3.0.0.5 version cannot flash a Froyo or earlier ROM for some reason. I'm not going back, so I haven't done this.
My TitaniumBackup realized somehow that I installed fresh, and it automatically restored my apps and data. It did NOT on my friend's phone. But, he has the free version and I have the paid one. If it doesn't restore your app settings, you can manually go in and do it. One thing that I've never been able to restore is Good corporate email. It restores, but it won't send or receive. If anyone has ideas on this, post them.
Note that I flashed with build 35, and it's been rock solid. Your mileage may vary. If you already have the software noted above, the whole process only takes about 5-10 mins.
Edit: Recovery 3.0.0.6 was released, and works with 2.2 and 2.3. So you wouldn't have to downgrade the recovery to go back a version. As of this edit, you can grab it here if it's not showing up in ROM Manager yet: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=952433
Something to add... if you are using ADW or LPP do a backup if those also. I find that if you install it fresh from the market and not TB then press restore settings in their preferences it will load all the custom icons and custom dock. It saves alot of time. Nice writup for the peeps that need the pointers for a fresh and fast install of a nightly
FYI, Titanium backup works great at restoring apps. I would be weary of restoring data between android versions however, because some of the data will be of a different type and could cause lots of issues. Thats the reason for the full data wipe before flashing in the first place.

I thought that was mostly because of system. The apps themselves still store their data in sqlite databases, and their schema should not change between versions of the actual OS. I might be wrong.
app data is fine, system data is what causes issues. I should have been more specific.

The only system stuff I install is the accounts back up, email data, wifi access points, and account and sync settings. I usually dont have a problem installing this kind of stuff. I had a few problems in the past restoring some system stuff and it made things not work, a lot of force closes. etc.. I would open up say the sound settings in settings and it would never open it would fc 100% of the time. You know I bet a lot of the issues people have with stuff not working when other's have no problems are due to bad restores. I have not once in any of the builds(since 26 when I started flashing CM 7) had an issue with wifi or gps(knock on wood)

But the market automatically downloads all your apps for you. last time i did a full wipe i only used TB to restore data only, since the apps had been installed automatically from market.
You can use My Backup Pro to back up your SMS and MMS, plus bookmarks and a few other things. Very useful if you want to wipe and save your text.

Ok so I just barely rooted and flashed cm7 #40 to my glacier. Everthing is great. I love the rom. I just need help on 2 things. First, how do I get my contacts to sync back to my phone? I had done a factory reset twice before and they always synced back after I logged in my gmail account but not this time. I did sync my gmail before rooting and flashing and I also backed everything up with titanium backup but nothing. Second, when I first flashed the cm7 #40 rom I liked how when I locked the screen it shut off like if you were turning off a tv. I don't know what I did that it does not do it anymore. If anyone knows hows to fix my 2 problems I greatly appriciate it. Thanx.
EDIT: I figured out how to get the screen off animation back but I still have problems getting my contacts to push back to my phone. If anyone knows how to get them to sync it would be helpful.
EDIT#2: Figured out how to get contacts back. Was not able to sync them but just went to the tmo website, wrote them down and re-added them to my phone.

Did you install the GAPPS zip that came with the rom? if you didn't, do. Its the google apps file. That will load the market and apps.

wiped, re-flashed the rom and re-boot. it was the only way i was able to get the animation back.
I'm curious if there's a way to batch-restore data only in Titanium Backup? Only way I can see is to do it app by app.
Likewise, any way to batch-backup data only?

[Q] Cyanogen Mod 7 wont keep apps

Okay i have cyanogen mod 7 on my phone with a backup of my phone. i rooted with unrevoked, i have installed TB and i backed up all apps and data, i also have busy box. I moved TB to my sd card. and that is all i have moved over to the sd card.
I changed over to cyanogen mod 7 and it saves nothing, no contacts, no apps, when i install TB it always force closes before even starting. I get upset because i cannot use any of hte apps i have, and i cannot find the market on it to download it.
i tried to move busy box over to my sd card and cannot.. any help is great help! thanks!
Did you wipe data and cache when you flashed? It is normal that your phone will reset like this. Use Tom manager and run the fix permissions script then reboot to recovery ans wipe the dalvik cache and reboot from recovery. It will take a while to boot this time but once up again most fc. Issues should be resolved. I suggest you also make sure you downloaded CM's google apps and choose what google applications you want if you haven't done so. Once you setup your google account any apps purchased from market should install. Then anything that didn't restore use TB and install any other apps. I suggest only installing the apps and not the data since you transfered from a sense rom to cm. It could cause more fc.

When I do Rom Manager i click "Install Rom from SD Card" and then go to the rom download of CM7 and install it.. i checked both Backup Existing ROM and WIpe Data and Cache. The first time i did this i also downloaded google apps. which until you said that, i totally forgot i had done that (my bad).
How do i install google apps after I update to cm7? do i have to go into file explorer?
(sorry for the weird questions i have searched forever and cant find anything, but i probably missed this)
thank you for the super quick reply
Its a one time thing that starts after you set up your google account. It asks what apps to install like voice maps earth etc. To reinstall g apps you can use rom manager and choose install from SD choose the clockworkmod folder then download then goo-inside.me you should have the google apps zip there.
Upon reboot you should be prompted for what apps you want.
If you still have issues I suggesst you use rom manager and choose download rom then cm thencm7 rc2 make sure to do g apps and then just do the delete data and cache just remember choosing that wipes everything but to me it sounds like nothing is reinstalled so its not really an issue right now.
Good luck I'm out for the rest of the night. Hopefully you wont have anymore issues but otherwise I'm sure someone else will help you out.

Okay, i am able to boot into cm7 RC 1 which i have downloaded.. should i downlaod rc2?
After that I go to ROM manager and i do the fix, then install google apps. i have done with both none checked and the data and wipe checked.
without it went into a bootload, and would pop up a green android guy and it says click the android guy, i go to click it and it bootloads again.
with it, i actually got it to start up, when i went to unlock it, it went into the bootload again, and the green android guy comes up and says click, when i try, it bootloads again.
What am i doing wrong?
I attempted to install RC2, it sat at the loading screen for minutes with nothing happening.
So i went back to RC1, got it to install, fixed permissions, installed gapps, this gave me the market app, and a few others (no gmail) but when i started it up, the google apps never actaully ran, and none of those apps work. Also, i cannot get things like handcent or most of my other apps to work, but some apps do work.
I am pretty puzzled.
thanks!
Okay, so have you went to settings>accounts>add>google? And logged in with your GMail yet? If so you can goto market and search for Gmail and it should download. The "Google apps" did run if you got the Green Android Guy. All it is a script to kick off the download from the Market, so they won't install till you get your Google Account logged in.
Im sorry if i was unclear,
Yes, at one time when i would install gapps the green guy would pop up, but would restart every 2-3 seconds. I saw a post from a guy who had this happen, and he said to update to the newest gapps. So i upgraded to rc2, and i could not even get rc2 to boot, i waited well over 20 minutes on the boot screen, and it never once actaully went into a bootload where it kept restarting.
After that i went back to RC1, and installed the newest gapps. the problem that persisted was that after i installed gapps, the green guy never came up, but i noticed a few things were installed like market.
I tried to load market and it would not work (even after permissions fix) but i got TB running and added apps on there to see if they would work. I could not get apps such as Handcent or most other apps would not work, and i could never actually log into gmail even though i had tried.

a couple issues need to be addressed here. One you can't use HTC (Sense) apps with Cynaogen. In most instances Cyanogen has replaced them with an app that is similar and works for CM7. Otherwise you have to find something in the Market that you like to replace it.
The second issue is when you do a full wipe of the phone such as is required when installing CM7 all user data and apps are lost. What you end up with is basically a new phone as if it came out of the box for the first time. In most instances you will need to activate it and then put in your google account information. If you had google backup your apps they will download automatically once the phone is setup, which can be a pain and takes forever.
Also I personally don't use ROM Manager to install my ROMs, I do it through the recovery console. I do download the ROM (and gapps) with ROM Manager but cancel the install once its downloaded. I then move the ROM and gapps files from the clockwork folder on the sdcard out into the parent directory of the sdcard and install them from there.
I know i cant use the htc stuff, and i have figured out the contacts problems.
What i cannot get is first google apps to work, such as when i start up it either bootloads or the one time i did it and it just automatically added market and stuff.
I have never had to call vzw and redo anything.. so idk if i am just doing it wrong or what.
okay, in order to do this correctly, in the recovery mode do i do the wipe/factory restore to it to make it work correctly?
anyone? sorry i must be alot worse at this than i thought i was going to be.
Lol, we all have been noobs before, so don't worry too much if your still having trouble. So what are we trying to accomplish now? Factory reset with cm7 rc1 installed so you can start over?
It seems to me that you've been successful in getting cm7 installed just not up and running the way you want it. That and the fact that you lost all apps in the process right?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Some people have reported problems with ROM Manager not wiping the phone properly and thus not getting CM7 to run properly. I had this problem too. So I just installed it through recovery. Select the option "wipe data/factory reset" and that will wipe all the folders on your phone that need to be wiped. Then select "install zip from sdcard" and the option to "choose zip from sdcard" which will allow you to scroll down to the CM7 zip file stored on the sdcard (must be in root directory not clockwork folder). After flashing the ROM before rebooting also flash gapps doing the same install zip method then reboot. If this doesn't work something else is wrong.
Once you have a working copy of CM7 installed you don't need to wipe the phone to install newer versions of CM7. You can install right over the old one this way you lose no data. Some people recommend doing a dalvik cache wipe before updating but I don't and haven't had any problems.

Decks 1.3d RELOADED

Ok so I went to MikG3.11 to give sense another try and I loved it for the most part.... But It felt like it was getting stale so I browsed around for some new roms to check out and came across an old favorite... BUT UPDATED!
And so came Decks RELOADED. Honestly, I love the changes they made and how it's all looking. However I'm having a HUGE problem getting this ROM set up. In Aroma Setup I choose my theme, then install options and I make my choices.... But upon install Nothing gets installed. Just the default apps. No Gapps, just the basics. So I tried to install Titanium and it said I could restore my old device name (Avast uses this i believe) so I let it restore.... Instant reboot and then there's no market or TB.
So then I decided to do a basic install and peruse through the ZIP and pull out the APK's I wanted and flashed. Worked perfectly. Was getting everything set up and was running out of space. So I flashed DTA2SD as basic install didn't do that for me and it rebooted as expected. Only when it finally did it's last bootup ALL my restored apps were gone and same with GO Launcher. Wtf am I doing wrong?
I have the latest Amonra and did superwipe twice as well as Factory Reset before hand. I cannot get this to install properly. I never had this many problems with original Decks 1.3d
Could you list the choices you make in Aroma? From beginning to end.
The Creator of Suds N' Bubbles
Yeah sure. In fact I kinda have to. I just set it up AGAIN, but this time flashed the dta2sd that came with the rom and made sure it was there. Got all my apps installed and applied my 3g turbocharger setting 5 and redid my v6 charger to see what kind of changes I would notice (Didn't apply v6 last time) and rebooted...
AGAIN all my apps are gone and it's like I just wasted 4 hours banging my head into a wall. EVERYTHING I just did is gone.
So I honestly have no idea what is going on here but I have NEVER had this much trouble with flashing a ROM before.
UPDATE: Rebooted my phone for the 3rd time now during typing this out and noticed most if not all apps restored, are showing up. However Go Launcher is not there and neither is Play Store. Will post more info once fully booted.
Please do.
The Creator of Suds N' Bubbles
Ok same thing. It loads some of the apps and 1/3rd (roughly) are still missing. Still no Play Store.

After numerous tries with many different settings, I cannot get this ROM to install correctly. Is there something I'm doing wrong or a bad download link? I think I should just go with a different ROM? :C
You're going to have to read through the thread. All of those problems that you are having have been discussed, and fixes to them have been offered.
I've been running Reloaded since it was released, and haven't felt the need to flash another ROM since.
Let's start with this. Kernel FSO means File Sharing Off (I think, can't remember completely)
I want you to redownload the Rom, back up your SD card to your computer, Partition your SD to ext3 1024 swap size 0, move everything back, Wipe everything EXCEPT SD card, flash the newly downloaded Rom, Select only the apps you need, (no need to flash tb apps already backed up) then if all goes well and you get install status 0, DO NOT reboot, and go back into recovery and wipe cache and dalvik, THEN you can reboot.
See if that works. Good luck man.

Thank you. And thank you too poster above. I fell so hard in love with Decks 1.3d when I jumped on the AOSP train. To see this and play with it for even a minute and I'm right back in the saddle. I will try all this, I would really rather not reformat and repartition my SD card.... but If I must, I must.
I downloaded a cleaner script and following the OP WORD TO WORD. I normally never use a cleaner script as I never had a problem flashing, but I'm gonna try it out.
PS: What is the advantace/Disadvantage to FSO?

If you aren't using smelkusMOD recovery, you should. And supposedly FSO makes it faster or something. I don't remember the exact definition or differences.

That's what I meant. I'm using that recovery and I love it actually. But, the problem being is I just did a fresh download, fresh install as described.... However I didn't format my SD card.... COME ON MAN THERE MUST BE OTHER TRICKS!
32gb is ****ing LONG to back up dude.... LOL
Well with must distaste for it, I'm going to reformat my SD card. Normally go with EXT2, But I guess everybody is going with EXT3 now. Was wary because of constant access to the card, deteriorating it and whatnot, but I will give it a go.
I still have a feeling this isn't going to work. I honestly think this ROM just does not like my phone for whatever reason. I've downloaded from GOO and DEV, and no matter what install options I select in Aroma, none of them ever install. I will post back if I get it to work
Well, it seemed to do the trick! Oddly enough wiping my entire SD seemed to let Aroma do it's thing. Any idea though guys why this had hindered Aroma from functioning properly?
Proceeding to place all my apps back onto my SD card. Only the important ones though,

Glad it worked. Most likely was your sd card not being set up properly

When deleting info off a SD card you never really erase 100% of what you delete till you format, after weeks, months years that **** adds up and causes issues. I format or partion my SD once every 1 or 2 months.

sorry for being late OP, but i had the EXACT same problem with my latest install. fortunately it did not remove the play store so i just re downloaded and installed the apps. it is never a bad idea to keep a backup of the play store on Titanium Backup. I have had no problems since and my a2sd is working flawlessly. also, feel free to join the Deck's reloaded general discussion thread. there is a lot of good tips in the OP and there is a lot to learn there.

Install "button" doesn't work

Update The likely culprit appears to be an app called Velis Auto Brightness. A little over three weeks after this problem first arose, I switched my ROM to Dandroid. In deciding what apps gradually to add back, I ran across comments like the following for Velis:
Cannot press install from an APK Found a bug that needs fixing. With this app enabled for some reason installing from an APK it renders the Install button useless but the cancel button still works. As soon as I disabled this App, the Install button worked again.

Nice, but one slight issue I really like this app. Very useful and easy to use. My only issue is that when the app is active, if I turn off system auto brightness and try to raise the brightness, Velis overrides this and forces auto brightness.

Since yesterday, I cannot install apps, neither from the Play Store, Amazon, nor side-loading. The install process begins, but when I get to the screen that offers a choice between "Cancel" and "Install" pressing "Install" does nothing. I can, however, cancel out.
Thinking that installing a trial version of Cerberus may have caused the problem, I first disabled then uninstalled it. Neither solved the problem. I then disabled XPrivacy, also without success. (I restarted the phone each time before trying.)
Yes, "Unknown sources" is checked.
Any thoughts?
TIA.
Are you rooted?
Rom/kernel?
How much space do you have left? Anything else ypu may have done prior to installing Cerberus?

Doc, thanks for your interest. Here are the answers to your questions.
Rooted.
Stockorama version 2 (no change in the last month or more)
T99UVDMD5 (no change in the last month or more)
3.031-112078 [email protected] #2 SMP PREEMPT Mon Apr 15 11:59:10 KST 2013 (no change in the last month or more)
12.85GB available (32GB model) If it matters, I also have an external 64GB SanDisk sdcard that sporadically cannot be read. Rebooting generally again makes it available. Although I live with this, I'd appreciate any thoughts on this as well. But the no-install problem is more pressing.
Regarding the installation of Cerberus, to be more accurate I opened, configured, and ran it yesterday for the first time. According to my AppBrain timeline, I installed it on June 7th.
Try this,
Uncheck unknown sources, reboot, recheck and try installing something.
If it doesn't help, shut down, remove the sdcard, power on and try again.
If this doesn't help, use Titanium backup or a similar app and backup any important apps and data (contacts, sms, etc)(also I find it good to export contacts to sd from the contacts app itself), then boot into recovery and make a nandroid backup.
Next reflash your rom, wiping cache and dalvik (not factory reset). Reboot and try it out. If its still a problem, factory reset, then try again. If this solves it then start restoring your backed up apps. (Start only with the ones you really need your data restored on, the rest I'd suggest reinstalling clean).
I vaguely recall looking into Cerberus a month or so ago and I don't think it had been recently updated for JB. (I could be remembering wrong though) Before reinstalling it, and providing everything is working, make a new nandroid backup, then you can try it again with an easy, recent restore point.
As for your sdcard, what is it formatted as? Fat32, exFat? You may need to back it up and reformat it. I'd try exFat first since you're using a TW rom. If you plan on flashing CM/AOSP based roms, format as fat32. First try formatting using the phone. If you still have issues, format again on a computer.

After removing the sdcard, I was able to install in the following circumstances:
--online via computer from the Play Store (no need to press "install" on my SGS3).
--online from my phone from the Play Store (two different apps, chosen simply as a test, installed without my being asked to press "install").
But I still am stuck when trying to install apps from Dropbox or my download folder.
Trying to install from Amazon via my phone brings up the Cancel/Install choice, and pressing "Install" does noting.
I also disabled Floating Notifications, but that had no effect.
I have a nandroid backup from June 27th. Before reflashing Stockorama and adding back apps, would you suggest restoring that backup? If so, do you have any other suggestion before restoring the nandroid backup?
Thanks again for your continuing interest.
In recovery try wiping cache and dalvik. Not factory resetting. Then if that doesn't do it, reflash the rom.
I'd make a new nandroid beforehand so you don't have to worry about mistakes and loss of data. And of course make another once its working again.
If you use the old one, you'll lose any data you've gathered since then. If you are ok with this then go ahead. I'd try my above suggestions first though.

Success, eventually.
Wiping cache and dalvik didn't work. But restoring my June 27th nandroid backup did. I'm now in the process, with the assistance of my AppBrain timeline, of reinstalling apps from my Titanium backup and deleting others. (Just to be safe, I'm deleting Cerberus without having activated it on this flashing.)
A question, if you will. Were your suggestions just general troubleshooting? Or, did you--do you--have some idea what caused my problem?
Many thanks for your help.
Mostly troibleshooting. Sounded like some data was corrupted or was just in general conflict with the system. First time I had ever seen this particular problem. Glad you got it working! Make a newer nandroid once youre set back up, then you can try Cerberus again just to be sure it caused the problem. If you choose of course.

[Q] Insufficient Storage Available problem

OK, so I know... lousy first post... But, I just want a bit of overall guidance because I think I might be doing something fundamentally wrong and I'm hoping to fix that. So first let me say thanks for all the awesome ROMS and lot of cool fixes and ideas, I always check here first and appreciate the work you guys are doing!
I have had no fear in installing ROMs, I rooted as soon as my warranty was void at verizon. I love my old DInc! But, I can only install like 20 total apps now, and I think I've done something wrong or am doing something wrong.
Here's the history of what I've been doing.
Stock, Virtuous, CM6, CM7.2, CM7.2... It was here where I started to run into the low memory. All the forms said for this I should ext4all the dalvik cache. so I grabbed that file and installed it. The memory warning went away, but things got really ugly choppy and slow with a bunch of FC's. So I decided to change things up, and went to try an ICS ROM (I think albinoman) and installed a couple times... and I didn't wipe the dalvik cache before doing this. though I did wipe the factory data and cache. After this I noticed that a lot of things remained on my phone (wifi passwords, pictures, etc... like I hadn't erased any data). Soon after finding some bugs that drove me crazy, I upgraded to a CarbonRom (Thanks zachf714!) I loved it, but it seemed like I couldn't install as much as I used to on CM7.2... and maybe I can't... But I'd run into low memory things again and again, and eventually got it down to basically google apps, facebook, and a couple podcast/radio and the essential video apps for chromecast. Well, I wanted to try kit kat out, and I had started to run out of memory again, so I went in and grabbed the new CM11 and installed it, This time I wiped dalvik, factory data, and cache before install. It was amazing like a brand new phone... Only this time 2 of my previous apps were unable to install because I had "insufficient storage available". So I pushed as much as I could to the SD card, and that still didn't help eventually it was so out of space that the launcher would crash immediately after reboot. So I tried to reinstall everything, wiped all three, installed the rom, ext4all, then GAPPS... This time facebook ran out of space before it could even install. So I went back and tried again but without the ext4all... and now facebook and google voice run out of space before I can get htem installed...
So I guess the question is, what the heck am I doing wrong in my clear? I seem to constantly be shrinking the available space on my phone for apps. I know that it's a limited thing and has been a problem for the DInc, but how do I fix this? Do I just go into the file system and start rm-rf in the file structure? I don't even have (nor can I try) to install games at this point, and I fear logging into apps in fear that I'll shrink the space even more. And by all means feel free to point me to the "installing a custom ROM, You're doing it wrong!" thread that is in front of my nose and I'm missing. I've got 5Gb of space on my SD and ~3GB of free space on the phone itself... So I'm at a loss and that's why it's acting this way, and that's why I'm asking for help. Would I be better off going back to CM7.2 or trying to keep going with the newer ROMS?
Thanks again for any help and advice you have.
OK well let me ask something differently then and maybe I can get some help. Being that I'm new I need 9 new posts before I can go to the devs page and ask there anyway...
Does anyone know what folders/files are critical to keep on the device? I can nuke the rest and try again.
Would starting with a blank SD card make difference?
Thanks again.
Well not really the external sd card is only for apps moved to sd card. You should just fully flash and start over. That is what I have had to do. I hope this helps you out.

but the idea of what is happening here is not making sence I do not get why a full wipe and full reflash would not fix your issue here if you are doing it all right.

From terminal:
df /data/data

And tell me what they report.
The Inc has a small /data/data partition so that could be the problem. But if a full wipe doesn't fix it I don't know. Maybe the hardware is going bad but I'm not sure.

Do you have chrome installed? It's an app data hog.
When /data/data fills up or gets close to doing so there start to be issues and that might be the cause of your issue.

Can you do a factory reset from recovery (backup if you want to keep your apps for any reason) and then run the commands again? I'm curious if there's an issue with the partitions and they're not clearing. It seems weird that 24 apps would fill up 130MB of /data/data and 500MB of /data. Oh, contact storage and calls/text messages use up /data/data as well.
Sounds similar to me. I can only fit about 30 apps. Most are small but I do have chrome. I swear I had more before jumping to 4.x. That is why I was considering a datamedia build but I haven't had time lately to play with it.

Sorry this took forever for me to get around to, just been short on time recently thanks again for the help!
Ok factory reset from phone complete.
into recovery
wipe dalvik
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache
wipe dalvik again (just for good measure)
install cm11
install gapps... I'll report back as issues come around.

Well... Everything looked nice and fresh on the first go... Then one app hung on install, so I restarted the phone. When I did my old wallpaper returned, so I quickly went to check the gallery and look for the photos that should have been erased in the factory wipe... But they are all still there like nothing happened.
So even though it's currently installing apps... I have zero faith that I get through all of them before I run out of usable space again.

Riiiight... those commands.... guess I just read that wrong sorry.
Right now I have
/data size 748M Used 625.2M Free 122.9M
/data/data size 149M Used 103.4M Free 45.6M
This is after all the apps restored themselves... this time though I did manage to get G+ and Facebook up, but I havent' logged into all the apps yet, so I'm assuming they stay at base size until log in (such as maps, netflix, hbogo, etc...). I did a couple things different, I am no longer syncing all the contacts from my 3 google accounts, and I eliminated an app that I probably won't use as much anymore.
I don't have time again right now to re-wipe the phone but I'll try that right after a wipe in the next couple days. Just so I don't mess up again, I should factory wipe, cache wipe, dalvik wipe, install cm11 and gapps, but then as soon as terminal emulator loads back up run those commands to see if it actually cleared things, or should I stop all the restore from google and pull only terminal emulator for this? What's going to be the most diagnostic?
Do you think switching from clockwork recovery to TWRP make a difference? Do you have a preference in one over the other?

If you're worried about that time to restore after a wipe you can take a backup and wipe and run those commands from terminal emulator before signing into google. Then after getting the needed info restore your backup.
Clockwork vs TWRP comes down to personal preference. They both implement the same recovery commands and probably also use the same exact wipe commands internally. So there's no real difference other than ui. TWRP has had some funky builds on the inc though so I recommend clockworkmod for the Inc.
Fyi factory reset clears dalvik and cache too so no need to do those separately.

Oh cool, never thought of that, I've only ever upgraded as a result of running out of space or things slowing down so I've never really wanted to back up and restore those before.
Right... So factory wipe
install cm11/gapps
only terminal emulator installed...
/data size 748M Used 109.8M Free 638.2M
/data/data size 149M Used 29.3M Free 119.7M
Although this is a huge decrease...
connecting as USB shows that basically all of the files on the phone itself remain, so the factory reset essentially doesn't wipe any of the data from the phone?????
Thanks again!
When I did the restore, it brought back things for me, but caused a severe amount of instability and everything force quit on me. lost my launchers can't get to apps... and it keeps auto quitting google media services every 5 seconds... not sure if this is indicative of a different problem or just how precarious everything is on my device. Anyway, factory reset, and now back to the google restore...
Oh... a couple more questions.
1) when I factory restore this way it should wipe out other data like my set up wifi networks? (it doesn't)
2) what about other app data? things like my sonos app after the factor reset didn't even need to be set up again... I find this odd

If you factory reset, you should have zero apps aside from the apps built into the Rom and gapps and all your settings reset. If that's not that case something is wrong.

Well.. that's good to know, looks like I won't be able to just factory reset and pass the phone along when I'm done with it... Gonna have to take a hammer and giant magnet to it! Did the memory look better on the reset though?

putting a magnet to a piece of flash storage does not destroy it, also from that used info it looks like it is just the data from the gapps... Try going into recovery and doing an advanced wipe, then checking everything but external sd and swiping to wipe
So it seems like we never really came to a solution here.
Has anyone tried increasing the sizes of these partitions. The /data/data only being 150mb is really limiting. Facebook likes to take 50mbs on it's own. I wondered if it would be possible to increase the storage of the internal partition and that /data/data folder. For most of us the purchasing of a large SD card for storing music and pictures and stuff is no big deal, if I could devote more of the internal storage to applications that would be awesome.
