[Q] Help! SMS Issues No One Can Seem to Solve (Even Sprint!) - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello People. Here's the scoop. I had a fully functional S-Off Rooted Sprint Evo 4G Running Deck's 1.3 or Cyanogen 7. I had Zero Issues up until 4 weeks ago. I noticed several of my contacts were not responding to texts. Quick phone call confirmed that no text was being received by these people. This happens to about 5% of my friends. It's the same contacts each time.
So, here's what I've tried.
-Searched EVERY Thread/Post/Forum about this and no one seems to have the EXACT same issue.
-Upon recommendation, I flashed the newest version of my ROM's Radios and Kernels (Was SavagedZen but Recently Usually Tiamat) No Change!
-Flashed a Rooted OTA from TheMikMik. Nothing!
-Each time I flashed I cleared Cache, Dalvik (Which Normally was enough) When devs requested Full Wipe, I did so.
-I tried flashing a Rooted Sense Rom, Provisioning, Updating PRL and all those goodies and NOTHING! Same Issue Persists
-Finally out of ideas I wiped phone, ran the S-On Patch, Reverted Bootloader to stock and unrooted fully. Updated all the PRL and Goodies again and, NOTHING! Same Issue Persists!
-Called Sprint and they tried some things and directed me to a Sprint Store. Went to Sprint Store and they updated HTC Software to 5.07. Nothing! Same Issue Persists! The Only Break I had was one time the operator from Sprint Customer Service sent a Refresh Signal to my phone, and those people with issues got 2 text messages from me! Then right back to Horrible, they never got one after. They said they couldn't figure it out and that it may be a hardware issue.
PS. The contacts that cannot receive messages from me can send them to me successfully as well as receive MMS from me. Only Outgoing SMS is dysfunctional to these contacts.
I'm lost. I've flashed many a ROM and learned a ton from you guys so hopefully someone can help!
I'm vacationing to NY in two days and need a fully functional phone before then, so hopefully we can figure this out in the next day

But anyways, it might now be your phone. Your friends probably have low connection or their service doesn't like to be compatible thus causing the issues. Besides that it may just be their phones and they don't realize it. When i say do i send YOURSELF 10 texts, all counting down like 10 9 8 7 blah blah blah, if you get all 10, then its NOT your phone. This still causes your signal to bounce it to satellite and towers etc but it gets sent to you. There's no short cut it takes so its as if your sending to a friend.

Nandroid your current setup, and than flash a mostly stock ROM like TommyTomatoe's Classic.
You don't need to sign into Google. You should start receiving your old SMS messages.
While on this ROM, update your profile and PRL. (Your messages may not come until these steps.)
Now use your nand to get back to your ROM. If you still do not receive SMS, you may have to repeat and do a fresh install of your ROM.

I have been having gmail and sms issues. When I send a text or email 5 out of 10 times it gets stuck on "sending" and never sends. I just tried what you outlined here and it seems to have worked. Easier for me because I am already using TommyTomatoe's Classic rom. I just didn't even think to see if I could update the pro and profile on this rom. Can it be done on any sense rom thats not plain stock?
Anyway...THANKS!!!!

here is a long shot..... if the messages that are not being sent are over 160char make sure you are have sms split selected in mms settings and if you are using a 3rd party messaging like gosms or handcent make sure those settings are matching in the stock app and 3rd party

@Matt, your are welcome.
Any Sense ROM should do.

The Sense Based Rom I flashed was the TommyTomatoe Classic. I can receive SMS fine... It's my recipients that do not get them... It shows as if its sent, but upon phone call to these people, they do not get it. They have 0 complaints of this happening with anyone else...
I tried sending myself messages and it works... I just don't know what to do!

No 1 Before the number... I have a HUGE Event coming up this Saturday. I need to text my whole phone book (5,000 people) which I used to be able to do just fine. Now I am very concerned that I will not be able to succesfully send this message and I could lose 1,000's!

Ive updated PRL and PROFILE but nothing helps. Anyone know why its doing this and how to fix it?

Did you install the rom fresh? Make sure there are no network issues in your area.
I had the same issue. I've got a few questions first.
1. Are you using Google Voice?
2. If yes, is your Sprint number integrated with Google Voice?
3. What kernel are you using?
4. What baseband radio version are you using?
5. What hboot version are you using?

It's an issue with Google Voice. Not Gingerbread. There are a countless number of people, myself included, that have had this issue. SMS issues like this are only part of the problem as well. Some people don't receive calls. Some cant make calls. Some can't receive voicemail. Some receive other peoples' voicemail. I used to use Google Voice all the time. But this last iteration of it they really screwed everything up.

When you open the Google Voice app for the first time you have to go through a setup process. There are two ways to go through this process. One is to integrate your Sprint # with Google Voice (you automatically enter this mode when you press "next" on the first setup screen) and the other is to use just the voicemail portion without integration (this is accomplished by pressing "skip" on the first screen of the Google Voice setup screen.
I accidentally integrated my Sprint number with Google Voice when I setup the app. This was a HUGE mistake as I lost all ability to receive text messages on my phone due to Google's crappy development of sms handling of Google Voice. I spent the next 2 months scouring xda, the internet, Google forum support, Sprint forum support, Sprint tech support, and every possible resource you can think of for a solution. I found an endless number of people that were having the same, and in some case worse, problem than I. But I never found a single shred of helpful information. So I decided to just take my phone into Sprint and pray they say it's a hardware issue and give me a new phone. But my last ditch effort proved to completely fix my problem and I now receive text messages just like I used to before I installed Google Voice. So here is what worked for me.
Details: You are basically going to return your phone to bone stock as if you had just purchased the phone. So the process I explain is going to unroot and return you to stock ROM, turn S-on, and revert your Hboot back to stock. It is also going to remove your Google Voice account (trust me, this is a good thing) So please make sure you do a backup of all your data, app preferences, and apps if you wish, so that you do not lose anything.
1. Log into your Google Voice account online. (from a computer or your phone's browser)
2. In the top right of the page you will see a little icon that looks like a cog (a gear). Click that icon and select "Voice Settings."
3. Looking back at the main part of the page you'll see the details for your Google Voice/Sprint phone number. Click the "Disable" or "Deactivate" button to go through the deactivation process required to remove your Sprint number from Google Voice.
4. Go back to your phone and FULLY logout of the Google Voice app. Once you've logged out uninstall the app.
5. Go to this link and follow the rest of the step by step instructions. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18399552&postcount=2
6. If your phone STILL does not receive SMS messages then you're at least already unrooted and can just stop by a Sprint store and have them see if it is a hardware issue. For me, unrooting somehow fixed my issue.
Once you complete those steps, if your messaging is working properly again, you can then reroot your phone and go on about your business as usual. The whole process of unrooting and rerooting my phone to fix the problem took an entire 15-20 minutes to do. Most of that time was spent verifying that things were working properly. Unfortunately I cannot tell you what exactly what the problem was. All I know is that when I unrooted to stock my phone suddenly worked again. So I decided to give Sprint the finger, reroot my phone, and get flash happy like always. I suggest NOT using Google Voice at all. At least not until they fix all of their horrendous issues with GV's sms messaging ability.

[Q] Text Messaging Problems, native Email, etc. (HTC Incredible)

Hello there,
I'm relatively new to XDA but I've heard that pretty much any problem can be solved through you guys. So here we go. I have an original HTC Incredible (hence the title) which is rooted and has the Android Business Gingersense 2.3.5 ROM installed. My problem is hard to explain, yet may be very simple. I simply cannot send or receive text messages to my knowledge.
So here are the details. Whenever I compose a text message in the native "Messages" app, I click send and the "Loading..." little window with the spinny circle pops up for a split second, disappears and nothing happens. It doesn't show me that the message was sent, nor does it give me an error message saying that it didn't send. Nothing. I have heard, however, from the people I sent the messages to that some of them did in fact go through, but I just didn't know they did cause it didn't show up on my screen. They also said they texted me back multiple times trying to get a hold of me to no avail, which is the other problem. I also cannot receive any messages. It may be that these issues are connected in some way but I am not sure.
Another problem. My native email app has the same sort of issue, only when I compose a message and hit send, it force closes the app saying, "an unexpected problem has occurred." Therefore I cannot send or receive emails as well. Quite inconvenient as many of you probably know.
One last issue involving the texting problem. May not have anything to do with the native sms app, but I believe there is still a possibility. I mainly text with Pinger's TextFree application, which not surprisingly has the same problem as the native app. Every time I try to send a message, NOTHING happens, yet I get reports from the people I "sent" the message to that they actually got the message and tried to get back up with me multiple times. Still, I didn't receive anything. But I did go on the web based version of the app and saw both of our messages between each other and the web app worked fine.
Any help at all is greatly appreciated and I hope I can get this resolved.
Thanks alot!
Almost sounds like a data/mms config problem. Are you able to receive any messages or emails at all?

Open the stock messaging app then hit menu - settings - connection settings, there will be 5 settings greyed out in there. What are the current settings for those 5?
Edit: Nevermind i forgot were talking about cm9, might not the same settings as sense. Better yet go to the market and download "apn backup and restore", do a backup and then go to the sdcard then the apn backup folder and then open the xml backup with a text editor and copy and paste its contents to here. You are on verizon correct?

Okay, I think I have figured it out. Before I reflashed, I deleted my Google account. Then, reflashed C9 and when prompted on reboot to sign into Google, I clicked "later".
So, now I received several test text messages I had sent the past 2 days.
So far, so good.
Also, when I restore from Titanium, I am only going to restore Apps, but not the System Data.
I think Google is somehow interfering with things. Maybe something funky with how my Google Voice is interacting with my phone. Who knows. Anyway, I will be sure to report back here to help others that may have similar problems.
Well, so far so good. When I re-installed Apps I de-selected Data.
Texting is fine now.
Perhaps it was the System Data from prior ROMs interfering with the current ROM?

haha yes. its never a good idea to restore system data

One more follow-up. I now Restored all data for the apps separately through Titanium.
Texting still works.
I think when I flashed the new C9 ROM, when I restored Apps+Data in Titanium, something got screwed up and thus the texting function got screwed up.
Now able to send SMS texts but NOT receive them
I'm reviving this thread.
I have checked out a few other threads, and this comes the closest to describing my issues with my rooted unlocked (SEC OFF) HTC Droid Incredible (version 1).
I did NOT change ROMs -- right after getting the DINC, I installed a rooted stock deodexed GB 2.3.4 ROM from DINC.DOES-IT.NET, and I have not touched the ROM since.
BTW, the ROM build is 4.06.605.3 CL 140944 release-keys
Ditto baseband radios, no change. Version: 2.15.10.07.07
I did recently update the kernel to a version of gingertiny that allows apps to record phone conversations without the speakerphone being turned on.
Old version: 2.6.35.14-gingertiny-v2+ Feb 2012
New Version: 2.6.35.14-gingertiny-v2 Nov 6 2012
It is POSSIBLE that the problems started with the change of kernel, because I don't use texting very much at all, but that was still a few weeks ago.
Based on what I have read on XDA, I went into Clockwork Mod 5.x Recovery, deleted and reformatted the data cache, and rebooted.
After that, I could SEND but NOT RECEIVE text SMS.
I had some doubts about whether all my calls were ringing through properly. I am still not entirely sure, but test calls from a landline and mobile phone did ring the phone, so maybe that is no longer (or maybe was not ever?) a problem.
I have seen suggestions to do everything from reinstalling ROM (being sure to restore only apps+data, NOT system data) to flashing a new radio to running *228 over-the-air update to manually upgrading the PRL list.
And then there is the question I have about the kernel change somehow being the culprit...
EDIT: One other thing I did right before changing the kernel was run Convert2Ext4 v2.0 using the "no data limit normal dalvik" version. My reason for running this was to get rid of the low memory/no memory warnings, lockups and crashes I was expriencing despite having over 300MB left out of 775MB on internal memory.
How should I go about trying to restore the ability to receive SMS without totally bricking or otherwise disrupting my DINC and causing more harm than good?
The SMS issue is not a kernel-related issue. I'm reading and re-reading the thread and I'm not 100% positive on what caused the issue for you. Also the convert mod would have no impact on phone related features (data/SMS/calls). Also on the convert mod, the 750MB internal memory (/data) partition is not what was causing the low storage, it's the 150MB /data/data partition that HTC uses for app data/libs/cache.
Process of elimination says go back to the previous kernel from February and see if you have the texting issue. Go back to the same exact build and see if that fixes it. I'd be surprised if the kernel change caused it as a lot of people are using gingertiny without issue.
Also a couple of other thoughts. Are you using the stock SMS app or a third party? Try uninstalling any third party SMS apps temporarily if you have them. Last suggestion is to call Verizon and see if they have a block on receiving SMS. I don't think they would since you can send them and it has to be customer initiated.
Also, no where in your post did it say you tested SMS, just that you couldn't receive them so I'm guessing your conclusion is from the fact that someone said they sent it and you didn't receive them.

Thanks for having a look in, Tiny.
I use PagePlus running off VZW towers. PagePlus service rep sent me an SMS while I was in contact with her by phone, she said it got deducted from by cash balance. The only thing is, it did not actually reach my phone!
I have only used the stock SMS app until just yesterday, when I installed Handcent SMS. That did not help. Will uninstall, but I doubt that will make a difference.
Will go back to the old gingertiny kernel and see what that does, and report back here.
If that doesn't do it, maybe it's time for a Touch of Blue ROM, with which many seem to be doing so wiell...

All,

you can hit thanks if you want but I did not make this... I just braved it and reported it. VVM is very important to me. Only reason to keep sprint.

Wow, this is one of the main reasons why I stayed away from CM rom in the past. I can't live without VVM... can't stand wasting 20mins sifting thru audio voicemails with a pen and paper.
Will it update to the new version or are we stuck with the version that gets flashed? VVM just had an update in the past few weeks, i think i'm on the latest which is 5.3.0.32.
I had visual voice mail with cm10 by just making a titanium backup of it from a rom that had it, then restoring when I ran cm10.

You never had to. Google voice provides a better voicemail if you ask me. And to the folks that dont like the deep integration, you can break the tie-in and just use it for the voicemail.
But yeah... VVM is good too. I just have fewer issues with google voice.

No offense but, Google voice is crap IMO. Or at least it was crap a year ago. That's what I tried to use when I was on cm7 on the epic. I hated it. Vvm is well worth the 2$ a month to me. I run a business with this phone, it's gotta be reliable. Like I said it's been a year since I last tried it, but the impression it left was a disaster to my business for an entire week.

You should give Google Voice another try. Make sure you set it up from a PC.
I also run a busniess from my phone and the option for different contacts to hear a different voicemail greeting is worth the price of admission on its own.
I have my main voicemail greeting set up as my business name and then I have a different voicemail greetings for my personal contacts.
I can login to any PC and retrieve my voice mail, no phone needed. I'm not sure if Sprint VVM does that or not.
I honestly would not be able to run my business without Google Voice.

Wow guys... Ok heres the skinny. I did a TB but the backup was not there after CM10. IDK y im working on it.
#2 I tried installing .apk- didnt work, kept saying your acct cannot be verified. Thats because the supporting files are not in place in AOSP- this is the way it has been since AOSP, so idk what he's talking about.
# 3 yes it did update.
#4 Google voice is horrible- I have tried it multiple times I always get beeps in the middle of my calls and the transcriptions are terrible, best part of google voice is missed call notifications even when you didnt get the call.
Now This is a Sprint VVM thread please keep it that way and if you want to run your mouth about something else then go somewhere else. Also dont need info about other apps or whatever-
Contribute or just keep moving...
I wanted to thank ya'll for posting this. Great stuff.
Just some observations...
This is the second-to-latest Sprint Visual Voicemail application. It works well, is stable, and I love it on Paranoid Android 1.9.9
Just a note - if you're worried that upgrading to this will delete your current store of voice mail files, it will not. If all you're doing is *flashing* this on an already-rooted ROM using CMW 5.0+, you're going to be okay. I played around with it earlier today. No problems whatsoever, all stable, no SNAFUS. I don't know why some people have reported issues.
Hoppingfully yours,
--SLN
Does this give the weird text every time you get a voicemail like all the other CM's?
Cm flashers are always pushing Google voice, but I find it to be extremely inconvenient and complicated and the voice to text translations are horrible. VVM is the only way to fly in my opinion. I'm getting the 9016 text thing on freegs3 now, but it doesn't bother me. It's just another notification. I just delete the thread after a while. I've been flashing so much lately that the text notification actually caught a few messages while I was flashing.

This should be in themes and apps not development. Especially since you didn't make it. Plus there is already a thread on themes apps with I believe the same vvm.
I know you're trying to contribute but please post in the right place.

Yes i do still get the annoying texts.
Then maybe someone needs to work on the search function. I searched before posting so w/e dude. I pit it in development because you have to flash in recovery. This isn't just an apk

I think the important question is why is this in the development thread? Please read the rules so you understand where to post. It makes the forums much easier to navigate if everyone posts in the correct forum.

stop annoying text messages.
the Text messages can be stopped by recording a voicemail message and sending it to the following address: [email protected]

Incorrect. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PEOPLE PLEASE USE THE SEARCH feature built into the xda forums. These text messages have been around since CM6, its how AOSP works. The only way to remove them is use chompsms, gosms, or something similar to block the 9016 text messages.
There is an APK in the Apps and Themes section here, install that, reboot to recovery, fix permissions, reboot phone, open vvm app, send 25 second message to [email protected] and it will provision and work. I have never had a single problem getting VVM to work since CM6 following these steps.

SMS BUG

hey guys from this forum...my mom received my old epic 4g touch because i moved to a GS3 but the problem is that everytime the mexican connection of IUSACELL is constantly being updated and it resets itself loosing signal and returning it and the sms start acting weird and sending symbols and interrogation signs between letters...if I do a factory reset it gets fixed but when the connection restarts it starts acting weird again...can someone tell me how can I fix this pleaseeeee for her because she's starting to regret giving me her upgrade.
She's on the official FK23 rooted update.

First of all, fk23 isn't official and neither is root.
What you're describing is the emergency broadcast system text msgs and this has been noted for some time across many builds.
There is a way to disable receiving these msgs.. but my brain is tired.. give me a bit and I'll edit with the steps unless someone beats me to it.

Well I meant Official as that its not a modded ROM but the one that Sprint Leaked and yeah it has Root, but what I meant is that when my mom sends messages the other ones are the ones that receive the strange messages

Odd indeed. Any reason to leave her on JB and not just put her back to stock official?
By chance is she using handcent or have it installed? If so, remove and use stock and test. The few same style issues on a search point to that app as being the culprit. Or if the text is more than 160 char it's not parsing correctly.

Unless she really feels compelled to keep JB it's probably best to move her back to a stock ICS build.
Well it happens even in GB Roms afrer a while hahaha so I guess its not the JB ROM and on the other side she looves JB I have brought her to the Android Side
My theory is that when signal is lost and returns...a problem with SMS occurs inside the system data thats why when I data factory reset it the problem gets fixed but idk if something can be done

If the text messages are from the same number there's a app in the play store called redlist. download the app then make a contact of the number the messages are from. Then open redlist hit blacklist choose the contact that u set up with the message. Then go to setting and turn off the notifications. Then you'll never get those messages.

Synergy Rom for Sprint GS3 Question!

I am planning on flashing the new Synergy Rom for Galaxy s3, I see it is available for all carriers, but there is no dedicated thread for it on the sprint part, I see it is on the Verizon threat and it says works on all carriers....is there any other files I need to flash along with the main zip to make it work for sprint, or is that included all in that one zip.
source: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1792499
It's all included... some reports say that with Sprint you need to flash, let it try to boot (it won't boot) and then dirty flash over top of it again and it should boot up
SPRINT GS3 FAQ
It works well. But you can't update profile/prl. Also if you want to install custom kernels must be Sprint versions.

Runs nice. In am on it at the moment.

Phone not yet activated message Sprint S3
Just flashed the synergy ROM, and I could not get the phone to work. I re-flashed it several times, and tried all of the options in the setup before flashing. The data worked fine. The phone would dial Sprint customer svc for a second, and then say phone not yet activated. I had CM 10.1 on there, but that was not for me. I wish this would have worked, but I suspect someone here knows the fix. Maybe a bad download? It took 1.5 hours over slow hotel internet.

I have been working on it all morning, and v443 is working for me now. Thanks!

unnntil I "lost" data connectivity (it turns it off when you remove the icon in the quick access menu.) And tried "restoring" a good data connection. That made it mad and now I'm back to no service. I am an idiot. I'll re-re-re-re flash it tonight and see what sticks.

I've noticed this as well. I didn't think it would matter at all though. Everything works GREAT that I tried. BUT I found out after using it all day today, that it has a flaw with sending and receiving MMS... For me anyways. I can get on my 3G connection just fine and it pulls up websites, sends and receives emails. The phone also calls out just fine and sends and receives SMS no problem. Everything works great except for the MMS (be it pictures or an audio recording)
I've tried - Updating profile - didn't work
- switching my data connection from LTE/CDMA to just cdma.
- Wiping internal SD card (not just data/cache but the whole SD card VIA cwm) and reflash rom
- I don't know what else to try
Anyone have this problem? Anyone know what I may do to resolve it?
I've looked around and I got to the point where I entered in a special code which would reboot the phone and activate it. Too bad it didn't work and I had to restore the stock rom for it to do that process (Hope it doesn't charge me an activation fee)
Thanks so much for any input! I like the liquid smooth rom I'm on right now, but man I love the camera too much on the touchwiz roms and so far it seems like this synergy not only gives me the speed of aosp but the look of touchwiz and the note2 camera. Would be nice if i can get around this hurtle
Update on my above post
Just an update - I got the MMS to work by using GO SMS from the play store. I thought it was a long shot to install a different messaging app, but now I can both send and receive MMS! It still wont work through the normal messaging app (Sending MMS results in it acting like it went through, but never reaches its destination. Receiving MMS would constantly ask me to download it, then fail when I would click the download button.) But then when I go into this go sms app and try to download it, it works just fine, and sends just fine. The options in this app seem pretty awesome for a free app anyways so I'm actually kinda happy I had to find a workaround
It seems when I downloaded this app, that the messaging app would often forceclose after receiving a mms. To eliminate this, I just went in the messaging app and turned off notifications and auto retrieve MMS. no more force closes
Hope this helps anyone else who may be having this issue!
Have a great weekend!!!

Thanks for this info! This new Synergy ROM is very nice, and I had not noticed the mms issue until today. Mine actually rebooted a few times while the messaging apps fought it out. I think I have it sorted now. I am glad I continued to try getting Synergy installed.

Thanks for the workaround hopefully they try to fix this in the next update. So I've had read that the next's update, the team will concentrate on Sprint :fingers-crossed:
The thread that you provide it, got me thinking allot and I'm afraid of restoring my phone to a backup I had made before installing Synergy Rom. Me thinking if I do something more I will end up having no service or phone number . I never seen this happen before

Did you click the activate this device button under settings? That is completely not necessary.your phone its already activated otherwise you wouldn't even be able to make calls. The activate button is for when you first get the device it activates it on sprint's side
