[Q] CM9 Speed - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all,
First off - this is in no way a knock against all the self-sacrificing developers we have - they truly rock!
My question requires a little bit of background. I've been flashing since the days (lol) of Midnight Rom. Switched to Syndicate Frozen. I then started in the CM world with CM7 and liked it a lot. I felt it was quite snappy - although it had some quirks. Then when CM9 came out - I dived in. The quirky list of things about CM9 has really grown smaller and smaller. But one issue I feel remains. The speed. When I switched to CM9, I thought, well it's new, and it "wasn't even supposed to be able to fit on our phones to begin with..." but now I just don't know.... there has been a lot of streamlining and bug tweaks - I would have thought it should have smoothed out a bit.
My problem is, I just don't know when it's going to lag. I feel like sometimes it's fine, and other times it's just sitting there waiting and waiting to complete the action I've tapped. Other times it freezes and I have to long press the back key to kill the app.
I'm just wondering if anyone else has had this problem or if it's just me? Are we living in denial (lack of snappiness to have the latest OS ver), or is my phone saying I don't like what you've put in me!
FYI - I started with CM9 Alpha (something - can't remember) and I'm currently running Beta 3 (I usually like to wait a few days to see if there's any issues with the latest build b4 flashing). When I flash the latest builds, I only wipe cache part and dalvik cache. I also am sure each time to flash the recommended GAPPS. I have on occasion "fixed permissions" but that didn't do much.
I've been faithful about not flashing another kernel - although if that would help, any recommendations would be appreciated. Also, I was interested in trying the V6 Supercharger, but never did - and now it seems that no one is using that....
So is it just me, or is this everyone?

Start clean... wipe data... go into mounts and storage format /system. Then wipe dalvik. Flash the newest build and enjoy the slick ness... trust me fresh starts will save your life. Besides when installing new builds you can go into back up and restore. Backup your Google account and it will reinstall all your apps automatically.
The V6 supercharger will help as well.

The page V6 SuperCharger for Beta2 doesn't look promising for the newer builds - it looks dead! Any tips on installing this script for the first time (and using Beta4)?
Thanks again!

Hit menu. Go to system settings go to back up and reset. Hit backup account. Choose your Google account. It doesn't notify you of when its done but 5-10 minutes should be ample. It doesn't save data... sorry. But if you need it you can use titanium backup and restore data for apps you absolutely need.
That is not the V6 you want. This is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18703418&postcount=5021
You run this is script manager. If you need a how to I'd be happy to write one. Or a visual if you honestly need one.

You will want to run these after you install the new build.
Okay the files you want to download are the V6 Supercharger Update 9 RC8.2, and the Kick Ass Kernelizer RC8. Once these are downloaded (ignore the fact they are PDF's) Go ahead and download and install Script Manger from the market and open it up and find where you downloaded those files. Run the Kick Ass Kernelizer first. Tap it the dialog comes up and tap the Superuser icon to "run as root" then hit run. It will run through its terminal deal, when it asks for the I/O tweaks go ahead and say yes... i know it says bootloop potential but it hasnt happened to me so id say your good. Then it will give your options (K)ick ass , Chew G(u)m, and E(x)it. Type in K for it to install and to unistall you would type U, then hit enter... it will run through and when it says goodbye at the end at the top left you can hit close. Then go ahead and run the V6 Supercharger the same way. This one will give your scroll options type 1 hit enter. It will as for fix emissions type y hit enter, then it will ask to system integrate init.rc type y and hit enter. Then when it gets done it will ask if you want to use these custom values.. hit no... then i normally use the 7 option... but i suggests what options which is 5-7 for the epic since it has roughly 512mb of RAM. Then it will go through a terminal print again when it comes to the Superclean and Restart go ahead and choose yes. It will reboot and your all good to go. ... definetly making a copy of this... that was a long type .

NICE - I held of from doing the wiping of system and flashing from scratch - and the V6 made a HUGE difference!!!! Now every time I flash the latest Beta I'll need to run both of these scripts again, right?

or go to your app drawer and find "Settings"
that's where you'll see "backup & reset

[Q] Launcher pro bricked my phone

Hi,
I have the Htc Desire android 2.1 with launcher pro. I loved it until recently it is showing that Launcher Pro has expired & it won't allow me to do anything. I restarted the phone, took out the battery but nothing seems to work. I am basically locked out because I trusted this product. Please help me out here, I would appreciate it. Again, htc Desire 2.1,launcher pro free version saying expired & opening up the browser only. I can't do anything else & I can't reboot as I would lose my contacts & data.
I tried looking at the solutions provided over the internet but nothing suits my situation. A lot of those solutions work for android 2.2 but I have 2.1 which I cannot update right now. Please help me people.
Thanks in advance. My phone is bricked until one of you guys can tell me a solution.
First of all that is not a brick. Second can you get in to settings? If yes, got to application management go to launcherpro and clear the defaults hit the home button and select the Sense launcher or download 'ClearDefaultHome' and clear the defaults. If that does not work you can do a factory reset but you will lose all your data.
And last where did you get that version of launcher pro? From the market?
Same problem here - but for the HTC Wildfire...
I'm having exactly the same problem - My version of Launcher pro was downloaded from the Android Market and has worked fine until this morning when it expired.
My phone will not let me access my home screen or any of my applications. When I press 'Home' it just takes me to my browser which contains an error message stating 'You do not have permission to access /index.php on this server. Additionall, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request'.
As I cannot access my home screen, I am unable to access my settings in order to manage my applications and uninstall Launcher Pro... Starting to panic now!
Any suggestions would be appreciated!!!
Thanks x
Not bricked.
Erm, your phone is not bricked.
Well the way i see it,
1) you could email the maker of launcher pro and explain your situation, though I think its more of a user error
2) Do what TheGhost1233 said, try to go into your settings, and select clear default on launcher pro app. Use htc sense again.
3) factory reset everything and set up everything once again
4) root and flash a new rom (Its more fun )
edit* For people who can't access their settings, try downloading another app that allows you to change settings.
If a factory reset is a to big of a step you could also try to remover launcherpro (in recovery) via ADB.
Thanks for your replies! As ghost1233 and friedkimchi suggest, I am unable to go into my settings or do absolute anything with the phone. I have the exact same problem as described by the other person in this thread of not being able to anything but just go to the browser which I cannot use because wifi is not enabled and cannot be because I can't access anything.
I bought the launcher pro from the android market and it was a free version which I have been using for months now. I seriously want to avoid the factory reset thing until I can because I do not want to lose the data. If I have to then I will but just trying to see if I can avoid it somehow. Nothing seems to be working now.
Yes The Ghost1233, factory reset is a big step because I would lose all my data and contacts. But then, what is ADB and I thought recovery meant factory reset.

Thanks, this seems helpful and points us in the direction where everyone is suggesting us to go to i.e. install ADB and uninstall Launcher pro in recovery mode. There is this video provided in this link which tells how to do that: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1SOSXwkc_8
Is this what you guys think is the last resort we have here for this problem and if I install ADB, would that be make my phone rooted?
Thanks for all your help and replies!
No it won't root your phone but you will run in to the problem that your phone probably does not have USB debugging enabled.
But i suggest you follow the linked thread (the launcherpro forums) for further help.
I do not obviously want to run into any kind of problems. What do you suggest then. This is not something that I am choosing, I did not find any other options. Please suggest what would be my options given my situation. I am not a nerd so I do not know if I will be able to do all this installation thing properly or not. This was kind of a relief that this would not root my phone. I don't know why I am afraid of it but I really like the handset and I don't want it to be screwed because of anything.
Thanks
a coworker of mine had the same issue today. I'm just reposting the link from another website, since I typically come to xda to find answers to stuff like this... either manually type this into your ANDROID browser, or if you could somehow make it to this page from your phone, just click this link... from your phone lol

Yes, that's right. It was a free version that I have downloaded from the android market.
idk if some of you are still having the same problem but if you are, i got this from another forum and it seemed to work for them:
Hold down the 'home' key in order to start your native task manager.
You should see the Settings icon, probably in the bottom right, of your tasks.
If you don't see Settings, double-tap your Home key in order to open Voice Dialing. When it opens, say 'Open Settings.'
Once you're in Settings, go to Applications, and remove LauncherPro.
Hope this helps.

(it should download adw launcher)

ps. my cousin had this problem and search for a solution and found it, just thought i would share since. xda always helps me out
Hey, I tried doing all this except for the download thing but it does not work. I cannot download anything because wifi is disabled and there is no way I can enable it. If I could have had a back up of my data I would have probably tried the hard reset.
I really appreciate all you folks to try and help me out. I am still trying.

[Q] How do I keep Sense from being shutdown due to OOM

Ever since I received the upgrade to gingerbread (first 4.06 and now 4.08), Sense will get shut down when I am in other applications. Then when I hit the home button I get the white "HTC" screen and then sense has to start up and reload all my home screens and widgets. It typically happens when I use the browser but has sometimes happens when in other applications.
Here are the things I've tried to keep this from happening:
* reducing the number of things on my home screens
* removed all widgets to try and reduce the memory footprint
* factory reset/cleared dalvik cache
* renice <htc.com.launcher process> -20
* installed Auto memory manager (AMM) and set it to "aggressive" mode
* using AMM reset the priority of "HTC Sense" from 6 down to 2 and specified "always keep alive" but the kernel seems to just reset the priority.
What's really annoying is when I look at the list of processes, things like facebook and weatherbug have a higher (meaning lower number) priority than Sense. Does anyone have any idea how to force Sense to be given priority over other apps so it can stop from being shut down?

John

with any OTA its recommended to do a factory reset. did you do this? its a pain to loss all your data but it might fix your problems.
sorry i didnt have my morning coffee yet.... If you wiped dalvik then that means you have root. your phone is not shutting down. something is killing rosie (the sense launcher.) and that why the white HTC splash screen comes up again. What rom are you runing? i know its the OTA but is it the RUU or one of the devs roms based off RUU??

If you read his entire post you would know he did a factory reset.
My best guess is to go back to stock sense before the last ota (by rooting and flashing or whatever way you wish..sbf or whatever) then download the ota on your computer and try manually updating your phone..if that doesn't work then I don't know

Most recently I am running the stock 4.08 version starting with applying the 4.06 RUU and then applying the 4.06 to 4.08 update file. I do have root and really use it for monitoring/managing the /data/data partition.

You'll just want to make sure you have busybox 1.18.2 installed, then run the script with Script Manager, and you'll want to select either 6 or 7 (I use option 7), then reboot. It won't brick your phone, but you can always run a nandroid backup to have something to fall back to.

Is this the correct script manager app: https://market.android.com/details?id=os.tools.scriptmanager ?
Noob question, how do I check which version of busybox I have installed. I found one in TitaniumBackup that is 1.18.14 but that looks like it is local to TitaniumBackup. I did find "toolbox" in /system/bin which looks like the stock rom's version of busybox. Is this what I should be looking at or is busybox installed somewhere else?

Yes, that's the app.
Download this app as well: Busybox Installer
It'll tell you what version you have (if you have it), then you can select what version you want to install. No need to adjust where it installs, just leave that at the default, just select version 1.18.2, then hit Install.
I read through the script just to get a sense (no pun intended) of what it was doing and then installed Busybox 1.18.2 and applied setting 11 "Hard to kill launcher" from the script. I've done a bunch of browsing to sites that normally caused Sense to get shut down and so far so good.
I initially installed busybox with symlinks and it the script threw a ton of errors so I reinstalled with symlinks to fix that.
Thanks for all the help. For completeness, here is a link to V6 Supercharger so all the links are in this one thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=991276 .
One thing I did have to change because I am running Sense and not a stock android launcher is the name of the launcher process itself.
On line 64, I changed this "pidof com.android.launcher" to this "pidof com.htc.launcher"
will the V6 script it just tells the android memory system to not reclaim memory from the launcher app so it stays on no matter what happens. only way to kill it is to go to settings and FC the launcher. also with the script you cant brick the phone because its not ran till after the phone boots. The term brick means : that the phone will not boot at all. you just have a phone that does nothing at all not even turn on. You can soft brick the phone meaning the software will not boot. all you need to do is make a backup before installing the script and you will always have a way back if anything happens.
for me i run the beta V6 script option under -=*512HP*=- which is more of a balanced one with bullet prof launcher and its is wonderful. but each phone is different so just try them out and see what works for you.

I did "soft" brick the phone recently when I deleted build.prop and forgot to put a new one in it's place before I rebooted. Had to use adb to access the phone to restore build.prop. I can tell you that was a nervous few minutes after I realized what I had done. Definitely not a recommended activity.

Should I revert back to the old build.prop before flashing a different rom?
Edit: So I did some reading and figured it out. Sometimes it's better to look for the answer on ur own. Ignorance is not bliss!

Titanium Backup Pro...

I have been using Titanium Backup Pro for a long time, but something weird is happening with it now. After I flash a ROM, the first thing I usually do is restore all my apps using the "batch" option. Now when I go to the menu to choose batch, it's a totally different menu with like 10 options. Now there is no option to batch restore my apps. This started after flashing CM9 Alpha 3 by Team Chopsticks. I went back to TDJ's UCLE2 Beta 7 thinking it would correct the problem, but it didn't. Has anyone heard of this? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks...
EDIT : I found the answer. Since the latest update, the batch restore option is in the upper right hand corner of the main page. Totally Stupid!

Here's the official website. There's a change log. I never batch restore, but I would say the menus are different. There was an update recently. Your phone or you probably updated it.

Don't hit settings. Hit the box in the top right corner. Then after you choose restore, hit the check mark in the top left corner.

I have been having a problem since ICS update. TiBu Pro doesn't see any apps. No user, no system, nothing. I have root. It is pointed to the proper backup folder location and I can see the apps in there but it shows nothing in the batch menu. The filter is set to show all apps. Any suggestions?

applications > force stop, clear data, uninstall, re-install?
I've uninstalled re-installed ran darkside cache wipe, no difference. I guess next I'll just Odin ICS again and start over.
It's very good program)) but as usual it has some bugs....
Titanium Backup is a very powerful tool, but the UI has always been it's weak point. It's not very user friendly and is completely noob unfriendly.

[Mod] Boot into CWM without pressing any buttons!

I know lots of you are booting into recovery like crazy but in order to do so we've got to press and hold 3 buttons at once, its gonna wear out our buttons.......not anymore!
Go to the Play store and install QuickBoot. Once installed you can then make a shortcut on your desktop, or the dock if you choose, for recovery. Simply tapping the shortcut automatically powers off your phone and boots you directly into CWM recovery.

Haha ya I used adb for in the begining but have been using Quickboot since last week. I put the widget in 2nd screen so when I need a reboot a quick swipe and im ready.

Yep...I do something similar. I have a scrolling dock, apps are one the first "page" and toggles are on the second, including QuickBoot's boot into recovery :good:

OMG Thank you so much.. I've started to develop carpal tunnel. I think the phone designers must have played that Xbox "Try not to Fart" game way too much. (That game will REALLY test your finger dexterity!)
quickboot has been around since the G1 days......where you guys been

Well for me this is the longest I have stayed with a stock rom EVER lol. I dont want to flash any custom rom right now, im too lazy to a 4 in 1 reboot mod so this works just wonderful for the time being.
You could just always download rom manager and use it to boot into recovery..

Tasker is also very handy for this. Create a new task with a pop-up menu that has your reboot options- Recovery, Normal, Bootloader. On home screen- Add > Shortcut > Task Cut > select task. Edit icon if necessary. Done!

For someone who already has tasker, great option. If not, my method is much, much easier
