[Q] HTC reboots, when getting warm, no waranty - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
my Desire was always rebooting, when getting warm. At the beginning it happend when using navigon about 2-3 hours in a warm car.
It happend more and more often over the time, now it happen when using navigon about 5 Minutes ... silly that I´ve waitet to long, but now my waranty is gone ....
I tried a lot of ROMs over the time ... different SD cards ... but I think it´s a bad hardware fault. I´ve read over the forums that this was a rather common problem with the earl Desires.
I plan to replace the buggy parts by myself ... is this a failure of the mainboard, or which part should I replace? Where can I order these parts? Any good source?
It`s an AMOLED Desire, is the LCD Desire Mainboard different?
Thank you!

Try installing custom rom with kernel that supports uv. Try lowering voltages even though most likely you won't achieve anything with it.
95% of such cases I saw here in my time ended with HTC replacing the motherboards. Why did you wait the warranty to expire if you knew the phone was malfunctioning?
You won't find mainboards in working condition lying around, and repair is most likely be greater in cost than the devices market value.

Is you phone overclocked? Mine happened to do the same when I was running it on 1300 MHZ, seems to be some kind of a security measure to prevent it from serious damage.

Mine can get quite warm especially during long sessions of Angry Birds while recharging, but has never shut itself off yet.
I have SetCPU installed and set max CPU speed is 1036.
Also, my phone back cover has a Invisible Shield on it, and the phone is in a Case-Mate Desire Tough case (inner silicone sleeve with hard plastic back on top) so if anything that probably makes it get hotter since the heat has less of an escape route.
Hope you can get it fixed or figured out.

How did you overclocked to that number, I mean the highest I ever saw was 1198 or something a little under 1.2 Ghz but...
What's your ROM and kernel?

I was a bit dumb about that ... i thought the phone has a 2 year waranty ... this would be over in August this year ... thats why I waited so long.
This week I called T-Mobile Germany for repair or replacement, and that said that it`s only one year waranty. What do you think 1 year, 2 year?
Could I perhaps send it in directly to HTC for waranty even if it's an T-Mobile Phone?
All my older HTC Phones (sda,Wizard,Diamond and a few others) had a 2 year waranty.

I don't know, you're the one living in the EU, but I think EU has regulations it can't be less than 2 years.

Dust UNDER screen (Video)

Dust under the screen of my Desire
Is this normal? I've read a lot of complaints of exactly this issue but surely this is excessive?
I would contact HTC and get that sorted as its not normal.
I had EXACTLY the same problem... same amount of dust, same position on the screen. I had my phone "repaired" under warranty, contacted HTC first and since I was told they would fix that for me, I sent it to the authorised service center in my country. Still waiting for my precious though
Had exactly the same problem after a week. I took mine back to Carphone Warehouse and showed them. They gave me another one there and then.
I'm curious know know if any of the Desires 'repaired' for this reason ever developed the fault again?
I'm equally curious to learn of this problem ONLY affected earlier AMOLED models or do the ones with the SLCD screen suffer also?
The screen is sealed shut on the production line. I suppose the only way to repair would be to replace it... so I reckon a repaired one is as likely to break as a new one.

I've had the same dust problem with my Desire. Returned it 2 weeks ago and received just yesterday. Seems like new now It took 2 weeks to notice dust under the screen. So it wont take long I'll let you know By the way it's SLCD.

Desire is a piece of crap

I came to this conclusion 20 minutes ago, when my Desire went to hell again after 3 f*****g days from return from repair!!!
It froze during absolutely normal usage. After pulling out battery, it stuck in bootloop. Bootloader stopped working after connecting to laptop, fastboot failed to connect to laptop and bootloader won't start at all anymore. Hard reset didn't work.
As I said: Piece of crap.
Murphy's law: "Anything that can go wrong will go wrong"
Well, i'm sorry for that, if i was u, I'd take the opportunity to take a new phone
Not sure if I can do that.
I quite like my Desire to be honest.
Although I must say I played with a Metro UI theme today, and I liked the UI a lot.
I also finally got round to adding a custom ROM last night. Tried a few, and now settled on one.
The limited memory issue isn't one if you know what you're doing.
And I was lucky enough to get an OLED screen.
I would cry though if I had to send it in and they returned one with a SLCD.
So I can feel your pain, a little.
Question: Is it normal that Desire gets warm below battery? Because, it gets seriously warm after few seconds. Perhaps an overheating issue?
Maybe you experienced the dreaded overheat problem...
After a few seconds..?
Even on idle..?
IMHO it's not normal...
Search for the Desire reboot / overheat thread...
See if you have the same symptoms...
ok I love a piece of crap...
I think you should send it to repair again

A groundbreaking phone when it was released and gave Apple a shake-up they are still yet to recover from.
Sorry to hear your device is having issues, but to suggest this phone is a POS, based purely on one bad experience, is seriously missing the forest for the trees.
Best phone I ever owned and will have it for a long time to come. So glad I bought this and not anything else.

It's either an overheating issue, or you are doing a lot of network intensive work. Because the radio is located below the battery. I also suspect that the processor is also located there.

Totally agree with what you said. I have used my desire for a long time now and It's still one of the best phone I've ever encountered. So much that I've decided against getting sgs2 or even sensation. I will wait for quad core phones. LOL.

So I requested pick up for repair. Fourth in three months....
In Germany you can request an new phone after 3 repair attempts ...
Dont know if its also in Slovakia but try it
I take I should ask new phone from HTC, right? Or from repair center?
Yes, you should definitely try that!

Seems logically to the repair center for me..ask they
This applies to Slovakia also:
If they do not manage to repair within 30 days, you can request your money back.
If your phone gets broken 3 times (not sure if it should be the same problem) you can get your money back.
So found it, sorry for posting in slovak language:
V prípade, že má vec súčasne najmenej tri rôzne odstrániteľné chyby, pričom každá z nich bráni v riadnom užívaní, má spotrebiteľ právo rozhodnúť sa, či uplatní právo na výmenu tovaru alebo na vrátenie peňazí. To isté právo má aj vtedy, ak sa rovnaká chyba, aká bola najmenej dvakrát opravovaná, vyskytne tretíkrát v záručnej dobe.
So it has to be the same fault.
Anyway I would still try to get my money back, or a replacement phone.

I had a few similar situations like yours. All of them happen when I was using a 3rd party battery. Maybe you want to ask the repair center to check the battery?
Is just a piece of hardware which will brake down.
Unfortunately you are unlucky and it happens often then to others (I'v send mine once for repair in 13 months).
If I was in your position, I would ask for new phone (as it broke so many times).
When you get a new one sell it on eBay, add couple hundreds $ and you have an upgrade .
Easy
Or if you really don't like it. Sell it and buy an iPhone ;-P

[Q] Desire HD - Motherboard failure

Hello,
I have a HTC Desire HD that has just died on me, it just stopped detecting the SIM car. Everything else works just fine.
Gave it to HTC service here in India and they gave me a quote of 13000 INR ($260) to replace it. Since its out of warranty (15 days over) I'll have to bear the expense.
Now I got this phone for 25000 INR($500) it makes no sense to go for this replacement. Now my dilema here is what more can I do with this phone besides using it as a glorifed paper weight
I doubt root it would solve this issue. But would love to hear from you.
Kind regards
I'd just went out of the similar problem. One day my DHD turn off and... That's all ! It just turn of and never came back. I'd to send it to HTC support, they return it to me saying something like "we changed the motherboard".
Now I think "Whatdafuck is this phone whitch can die one day without any aparent reason !!". At it's next death I'll get a Motorola.

Atleast you were lucky that you device was under warranty. I am well and truly screwed.
cheers
Personally, I'd get it repaired, since you could easily get another years' use out of it (more, but other devices will start to make it look old).
That would then work out at $20/month, compared to say $40 ($500/12 months) for a new phone, even via an operator's subsidy.
I'd also let HTC do it so that they can respond directly, should anything go wrong.
Sorry I saw you replied.
If you pay the HTC support can repair your phone.

I would try to buy very cheap non working phone with broken digitizer or similar - many people (at least in europe) sell their phones when they are broken and get new ones. And I would change the mainboard myself. its not that difficult. Ive done it with my old htc topaz...
Suffering at the hands of HTC
Last week, my 1.5 years old Desire 816 was working absolutely flawlessly. 5 seconds later, I pick it up and it is dead! :crying:
The HTC Service Center guys are asking for Rs. 9,700 for changing the Motherboard and I am like WT*. I can buy a new phone at that price. A bit of research and find out that Motherboard issues are very common in HTC. This surely was my last HTC phone.
Now I have 2 questions:
1. Is there any way I can get this phone repaired in the open market?
2. I was using CDMA as my primary number. I am not finding any other reputed manufacturer who has CDMA smartphones. I am not willing to ditch CDMA as of now. Any suggestions for a good smartphone that is not HTC?

Bootloader relocked, can I claim warranty?

Well, I guess my One X isn't perfect.
When I first got it, I didn't look for the flaws, I just checked that the Wi-Fi is ok and there was no ripples, so I unlocked it and flashed ARHD. But, after few days of usage I was shocked after I pressed the screen a bit harder (not VERY hard, just a bit harder because I stumbled upon some HOX screen creaking issue videos) and it started creaking in the upper corners and you can push the screen further into the casing (upper side) like it's on some kind of springs. Note: It was in a case since day 1, never fell because I treat it like a baby, I've had it for around a week. Now, I relocked bootloader and got everything back to stock. I never flashed custom kernels nor tried to overclock it/undervolt it. Plus, it NEVER got hot, after playing some more intensive (THD) games it got SLIGHTLY warm, you could barely feel it. So it is deffinitely assembly issue. My question is, can I claim warranty? Because I bought this phone in Germany (1&1) and I'm from Croatia, so I would have to ship it to Germany first. Or should I take it to repair shop so they fix the screen because it's perfect in every other way? It's model SH26.
Thanks very much.
Regards.
Well, I would say that it depends on the engineer who examine your phones. However, they always knew that you are unlocked and they have the right to void your warranty if they detemine it was caused by mis-used of custom ROM/kernels or else. Since, this is a assembly issue which was not consequences of unlocking. I can said that you are safe from this.
I adviced you get to HTC directly instead of a repair shops and query to HTC croatia asking wether they accept your device or not. For you interest, I heard that international warranty was apply my One X from a local retailer while my device is brought from neighbour country.
Either its hardware fault or not if ur device is unlocked they can refuse the repair under warranty. i have asked the same thing and they told me that if you unlocked it u cant use ur warranty.i said all the stuff about its not my fault or unlocking and its by manufacture but no luck. so i guess it depends ur rights that ur country provides .In Uk you can claim hardware fault in court.
Sounds like a shoddy products.
Yup, had to admitted the warranty may go as per country basis refering local laws. I don't think many asian countries deserves the rights for requesting changes/rejecting a device in 7 days without giving any reason as in UK. Thus, this may be why there are more strict on this unlocking issue in UK.
I sent my HOX (unlocked) for repair directly to HTC due to faulty earpiece jack.
They returned it to me fixed, and with a new and better battery.
HTC didn't charge me a cent.
Ive installed ARHD recently and a few hours after i noticed my screen making creaking and popping noises when pressed. Not sure what i should do about it, it doesnt bother me that much but if my screen falls out ill be slightly annoyed ;p. Surely they have to replace/fix the phone because this is a hardware issue?
Guess I was extremely lucky. Having heard of many defective devices, I began to worry about mine, and, to my surprise, there was no problems i could detect.
That's because generally people only shout about things that don't work. The happy folks with good phones are much quieter.

True,i haven't had a single problem with my HOX.When it was first released many people complained about the flickering screen, after that with the memory loss problem, now with the new 2.17 update alot of people are having problems with the wifi, and even so,i don't have any problem with the phone.
ON Topic:In my country if you unlock your bootloader the waranty is completly void,a friend of mine had problems with the phone microphone and they denied his waranty, had to pay to repair the HOX.
This may not be the greatest tip to give, but if you know that they will reject warranty claims (If you are in the UK, etc...) on the basis of bootloader unlock, it might be possible to bypass the issue by just bricking the phone to the point that you cannot get to the bootloader, because it seems they determine warranty status by going to the bootloader and looking at the screen.
Hence, no bootloader screen to check, no evidence that warranty was broken.
Of course this is quite shady and if you have the means you should pay for the warranty repairs.
...or realise (UK, etc.) that your statutory rights are not affected. Which is why they are "statutory".
It's hard to tell, some users reporting that they've been charged for a new motherboard prior to fixing any issues. Until then they won't touch the device. It varies from country to country and individual on the other end.
If you got it from a carrier maybe try sending it to them and bypassing HTC.

Depends on the problem, but usually a fix is possible/cheaper for them.
On the UK, your statutary rights stand with the retailer. If you're unlocked (relock it) take it to them.
Great news, my One X is back and It's fixed. Big ups for HTC Germany!

DEAD

Once upon a time, about 8 months ago, there was the little newbie me,I that old E975(lgg) and decided he should get a new phone with all those "G4's" "S6's" etc,I wanted a phone with killer specs, and the best camera out there,so I decided to go with the g4,looked up prices online on his country. Pretty damn high,so i found that one shop that sold it for like 100$ less,no official warranty, unofficial warranty for 1 year, that seems fair,I bought it,the biggest mistake i ever made, the phone was so good,it worked like a charm, and god damn that camera was awesome, about 4 months ago i was sending a whatsapp when it just got stuck on that screen,m'kay i tried restarting, won't work, removed the battery and inserted an other one, boot to lg logo and then shut down, alright, i still got warranty. time to use it,went to the store, they said "we can't fix it",worst customer support EVER,ever since that I've been using that ****ty replacement phone, ewo,so today i was really bored and decided to look up the problem and noticed my s/n begins with "505" looked it up,apparently all the g4's with that s/n got stuck eventually, and the store knows that and since my warranty is unofficial I can't do ****,or can I? is there any way to get out of this with a functioning phone?help?

Mine died yesterday. It's a hardware fault apparently and can't be fixed. You can, however, disable big cores and recover your data, but your phone will be really slow.

i was just about to cook the phone and teared it apart,i saw the whole oven thing and i thought to myself "Why the hell not" and well it should work...if it will stay the same i'll use your tutorial and probably use the really slow G4 instead of my current 2012 Huawei

Phone doesn't work really slow, if you know what to do. My phone is working since I disabled the big cores what is about 2 weeks now, I'm even on a custom ROM. All you need to do is to root it and using 'Device Control Manager' (Kernel Adiutor doesn't work for me) change the frequency what will enable all 4 cores and with 4 there is no big difference in the performance really. I feel like it's more Qualcomms fail than LG's, cuz look G4 was first phone with Snapdragon 808 wasn't it? What if the first processors they made they sent to LG as they are all now in s/n's 505-509 and what if these are faulty? It actually would make sense, with 6 cores my phone didn't even turn on, with 4 it works as normal, it means there is 'something' wrong with the two faster cores..
It's LG's fault. They have admitted such. It's a faulty connection/motherboard.
UPDATE
i've baked the phone,it works for now,how can i make sure that it'll keep working?
Replace the motherboard.
but they don't sell them on my country, and it'll cost like 400$ with shipping, and nobody replaces mobo's here,so is there any way to make this one keep working?

I'm sorry, but unfortunately you dug your own grave with that one. You may have saved yourself $100, but caused yourself major issues in the long run sacrificing that warranty.
Honestly, there is apparently no way to ensure it'll keep working. A lot of users have reported their phone dying again after LG has fixed it. A motherboard replacement is the second best option with the first being a phone other than the G4.
