[Q] Will data work on $50 gophone plan? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Just picked up this phone and got it unlocked. I tried searching but couldn't find much on the topic. Can anyone confirm if you can get data on the $50 gophone plan or does AT&T have these phones flagged?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA

I'm confused. Unless I am mistaken, AT&T doesn't offer the GNex at all. Unless what you are saying is you are trying to use a GNex on AT&T...in which case you are in the wrong forum entirely. Actually, either way you are in the wrong forum. Maybe because of the mobile app.

No I'm on my gnex on Verizon but I bought a t mobile sII and am asking about that.

You'd be better off getting a simple mobile sim changing the apn and you can get the 4g plan and get 4g speeds.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA Premium App

all you gotta do is flash a skyrocket i727 radio .. redpocket would make a better choice than gophone though , as I don't think it works with smartphones at all

Thanks for the replies I'll try those radios. Funny thing is data words perfect in my unlocked Droid pro but pop it in the sII with the same apn and nothing will load.

iIm using the plan now and the only way to use data is to purchase their data which is like $25 for 1GB along with the $50 a month for unlimited text and minutes. also with my experience i cant download anything from the play store thats over 7MB.
for me changing radios makes no difference
seems like ATT flagged a lot of android phones on howardforums they have a list of phones that do work on it. not much mention on the t989 from what i had found.

Questions go in the Q&A section

Seems like you're right as I picked up the plan and the data works on my unlocked Droid Pro but not the SII. Thanks for your response and I hope this post is useful to people in the future!

It was working before, I don't know about now though

Good News Coming Soon for ATT Prepaid Users!

Hello All,
For those who are planning to switch to ATT prepaid accounts, beware that starting next week ATT will be releasing their new prepaid "4g" packages which are kind of improved.
I've only the confirmation of one package which is for 65$ unlimited voice and text and 1GB data (so you save 10$ since you would be paying 50+25 before).
I am not sure if there will be any improvements to the existing data package limits though.
Also for new smartphone users, it's NOW double hard for them to get unlimited data on 50$ plan. ATT is ABLE to detect your IMEI number whenever you plug your sim into a new phone. Although for international users, it will not show up as their exact make and model but they WILL know if it's a smartphone or not (they now treat it as a smartphone if the make and model does not show up).
Just wanted to share an insider knowledge with those who need it.

Sorry about opening in the wrong place. As an unlocked phone user i felt like this might be more interesting to unlocked phone users since usually att s3 phones have post paid contract phones.

No worries,
we just felt the information would be more relevant to a larger user base who is using AT&T as opposed to the international community where the AT&T users are a minority
I don't suppose this will finally allow for LTE access on prepaid?

I just bought my prepaid go phone, activated my sim card with 50 unlimited plan. All working fine on the basic phone. Then cut my sim and switched sim to my gs3 and sim can not be read. After 20 restarts on my gs3 . SIM not valid. I called att and talked to a representative and gave him my IMEI and. Boom he told me: ok i just linked your sim to your galaxy s3 . Only call and text. Why would you spend all that money on a phone that has 4G and not be able to use it. Just seems ridiculous to me. You won't be able to get data working on a $50 gophone data plan. You have to get the 65 dollar option.

I agree, data will be slow for HSPA+ standards (i dont think it is hspa+). prepaid data isnt supposed to work on smartphones unless u purchase their separate data which is edge speeds.
prepaid is great for everything except data. if you find yourself on wifi the majority of the time then its not a problem.
My s3 running prepaid 50 unlim everything. Including 4g data no throttle.

[Q] Walmart Family Mobile Samsung Galaxy SII Root

So I know this may look like a dumb question, but I will ask anyway. So I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 (SGH-T989) but I am on Walmart Family Mobile's Network. If I root this phone, will my network be messed up?
Not at all, rooting your phone its only a open door for custom roms, kernels, radios, etc.

Thanks Now I am going to root. I just didn't want to take any chances that my baby(my phone) would get screwed up
Lol... Just make sure don't flash anything else that t-989 roms, once you're rooted, download titanium backup , rom manager, back up everything. and even there's a way to un root your phone again, un case that something goes wrong, or need to return your phone. Good luck buddy and welcome.
FYI, I'm using P.A.C.man 20.1.0 rom with cerux kernel, and UVLI4 radio, and my phone is so fast.

Yeah welcome. I have the same Walmart phone, but have T-Mobile service.
Be sure to use only T989 ROMs, as the others said. We have different guts compared to the other SGS IIs.
On a side note...what is your bill with the walmart family thing? I have two lines with 2GB 4g speed, unlimited messages, 1000 min for $80 per month. Thinking about upping the data plan, as the 4g speeds at my location have gone up greatly....

For three lines it's about $117 a month. 40 for the starting line, and 30 for each line, and some tax. And that's for unlimited everything. But 4G speeds are like 3.5G Speeds on this plan.

Maybe ask in the dev thread of the rom. Or better yet, search and read thru the thread. I'll bet that issue has been covered many many times in the aokp thread.
Anyway, try there....don't ask in an old unrelated thread.

[Q] Change S4 from T mobile to Verizon towers

Hello all.
As you can see by my name, Im'a Noob! i have a good understanding of computers and cell phones and can follow directions well but have not attempted anything like this so....
Here's the deal, Today i went to Wal-mart to get a new phone for my wife. I decided on the T mobile Samsung galaxy S 4 (on the Wal-mart family plan $40 a month unlimited) . unfortunately, it apparently does not get signal at my house. What i desire to do is move it to straight talk. because Verizon does have signal at my house. So from this point, is there any way to get this Galaxy S4 to see the Verizon towers and work on the Straight talk network using those Verizon towers? And If So, Can someone please post the step by step instructions (without assuming that i know what a jailbreak or unlocking is) so that i can make my wife happy.
Please and Thank you in advance for all your responses and help!!

Can't be done
Can't be done. T-Mobile is GSM, Verizon is CDMA, incompatible networks.
Straight Talk resells service for the major carriers but for Sprint and Verizon, who are CDMA carriers/networks, you have to get phones compatible with CDMA to use on Straight Talk and vice versa for T-Mobile and AT&T.
ok how about this

no ur only solution it not to sell it all you need to do is get a straight talk or a net10 sim card and pop it in the phone and than ur in business you need to update the apn settings for the phone to work..... straight talk and net10 run off of att towers so if att gets service where you live ur gonna be good..... these other people don't know what they're talking about... it has been done and it can be done

Neither the T-Mobile nor AT&T variant will work on Verizon. Period. There isn't an unlock you can do, no ROM you can flash, no special code you can put in to change that fact.
For ST or Net10 to use the Verizon towers you need a CDMA phone, which the M1919 S4 is not. As was mentioned in the post above mine, you DO have the option to run off of T-Mobile or AT&T networks either through the respective carriers or use those towers via Net10 or Straight Talk; but using the Verizon towers in any way is impossible with the particular device you purchased.

Where'd you buy it? I bought mine from TMO and was told I can return it within 30 days for a full refund. As others have posted, you can't do what you want with that phone, period.
Edit: Reread your original post. If you have to have Verizon then the phone you bought won't work. Just like a AM radio won't pick up FM stations. It's that simple. Take it back to Walmart and get a refund. BUT, if you can live with using T-mobile away from home and have wifi at home you can get a T-Mobile plan and use wifi calling and internet access at home, and the TMO network elsewhere. You want to use wifi at home anyway because it doesn't count towards data or calling usage. It's all seamless, so there's no problem using it that way.
Dude seriously I find it hard to believe you don't have Wi-Fi in your home. Because if you do, your problems are solved. Your phone supports Wi-Fi calling and messaging (SMS/MMS). This is why I switched to T mobile.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I do believe the AT&T and T-Mobile variations are able to pick up 100% of each other's bands so this argument is invalid.

[Q] AT&T sim S3 activation question

So I just purchased used very clean S4 and I was going to sell my S3 however having played around with my S3 my wife is interested in giving it a trial period. Her and I used iPhones up until last fall. Got her the iPhone 5 because she liked her apple products and was a simple user but now that shes showing interest we may be selling her iPhone 5 instead of my S3. My question is would I be able to use the SIM card from her iPhone to activate the S3 like I had done with my S4? I would try it out but shes out of town until the 15th.
Should be fine. I know on at&t I phones have different data plans than androids, so she might only be able to make calls and texts but I Dont know about other carriers. If you guys are on at&t you'll probably have to change the APN or speak with them about changing the data plan. I hope that's what you mean by activating the s3, lol.

[Q] Sprint Galaxy Note 2 on Straight Talk- can it be done?

I need help flashing a Sprint Galaxy Note 2 to Straight Talk. Any help would be appreciated. I have DFS already.
I know it can be done. I'm just debating doing it myself or paying $10 for a flashing service. I've heard both good and bad about one called cyberflashing and I don't know anything about any of the other services.
There are many different flashing services that have windows apps you run on a regular computer. You connect the phone to the computer running the app and they go in through the Internet and do everything. I haven't found cheaper than $10 and some are over $50.

As long as your device has a clean esn you will not need to flash to straight talk. It will use sprint towers since it is a sprint phone. They do charge you 15 dollars to add your esn to their network via CDMA bring your own phone option. The service is cheap but they took forever to port my number over and customer service is a bunch of buffoons. Don't expect them to be very helpful, they are rude, always sound like they are partying and they can't answer many technical questions.
Will you get LTE with straight talk if you get them to add your esn

I have had lte working on a d710 from sprint. So it should work on an L900. It worked as soon as it was activated and I used it until I got my L900 which I flashed to pageplus because the sprint coverage sucked so bad at my new place. You see it works on its native network on Straight talk so lte should work on your note2.
Ahh okI flashed my note 2 to Verizon prepaid and my unlimited 3g is fine for me but my mind keeps itching for 4g lte lol but I'm pretty sure sprints coverage sucks in my area in sc so I'll have to check before I switch
