Hello everyone,
I absolutely cannot STAND the stock ICS MMS.apk anymore with that stupid smiley on the bottom right corner where the newline or return key used to be on 2.3.
Example:

I can't be the only one absolutely fed up with this. Does anyone know of any good replacement MMS APKs? Bonus points if you can integrate it into the Black MMS APK I'm using right now:

I'm running AOKP Milestone 5 btw which is a build of ICS 4.0.4.

This actually didn't cross my mind sadly as I'm so used to getting everything from XDA or google and not the store!
I'm wondering if there's any lightweight keyboards that look / feel like ICS then? Because a reskin won't be enough, the actual button itself would need to have its icon and mapping changed.

with thumb keyboard i have a custom layout similar to stock but works better for me. it also allows you to bind functions to keys so that what you use most is right there. or look and see what else is available in the market... play... google store... place... thing

I've been a huge fan of the swiftkey 3 beta (link). Love the layout and the prediction engine. I'm using it with the holo theme which gels nicely with the ics feel. In this particular case, using the stock mms app has the return key in that corner, with smileys as the long press behavior for it.
That said it is a free beta that will eventually expire and the paid version is $3, I believe.

Just installed it, seems like a really cool app. If I long press the smiley in the bottom right corner I can get to the newline button but do you know how to make it the default action? I never use those stupid smiley faces.

try replacing your mms.apk with this one. it is blacked out stock ICS and has replaced the smiley with newline button. just use root explorer and rename yours as mms.apk.bak and copy this one to system/app and set permissions and reboot. may be just what you were looking for.
Keypurr is the best and fastest keyboard in my opinion. You should definitely give it a try

Alright so i have been looking for a way to rearrange the buttons the the stock keyboard for the EVO. I am running 2.2 not rooted, but will consider if I am able to rearrange the key. I am always hitting the DAMN . for a space. I have tried swype which isn't a bad keyboard but not for me. Is there a way to rearrange the keys or perhaps get rid of the arrows. Any help is appreciated but trolling however is not...
Thanks in advance
I used to use the Droid X keyboard before Froyo and now run w/ Smart Keyboard paid edition, awesome keyboard IMO, gets rid of the arrows at the bottom, stupid voice button isn't right there next to the space bar anymore, much better keyboard. I think they have a free edition you can check out, otherwise it's like $2.50
There's a version of the stock keyboard w/o the arrows. I can't remember which version it is though. I wanna say mod v27 but I'm not sure. I'll see if I still have it in my computer.

No prob. Just had the app saved to my computer. Not sure how to modify the keyboard. I wouldnt mind being able to move a few things around though.
Any chance to get the default Froyo launcher for our phone? I really don't like ADW that much but use it as it's the best option but would love to have the standard one.
Have you tried launcher pro?
Yea but I don't line the 4 icon dock at the bottom.
I like the simplicity of ADW/default but ADW eats up alot of resources.

Is this from the 2.1 or 2.2 Nexus build?
Thanks
[edit]I just pulled one off a Nexus one 2.2 build and it works fine, uploading it here incase anyone else wants it. Thanks for the tip.
Seems to work ok, except for the telephone button. Any way to change that?
could you post a pic of how that launcher looks?
Almost like LauncherPro when it's default, except for only 3 buttons and then dots on the side saying what page you're on.
can we install the launcher from decepticon on 2.1?

you should paste it into /system/app that works mine is from the n1 froyo build, too
Dumb question - I assume you have to be rooted to use this?
can some one snap a piture?
i still like LauncherPro better, so far no other launcher has been able to beat it yet on usefulness and looks and simplicity and effectiveness and... well the list goes on and on

In launcher pro you can set the dock shortcut to blank. That way you can keep as many dock shortcuts as you like. Mine has 5 so if you set the left and right ones to blank you can have 3 in the middle. Then simply change the shortcut functions to whatever you want them to be. It works for me
From my Galaxy S loonie-phone
is this launcher also usable on eclair 2.1, i've tried both versions posted in this forum and put them into /system/app but it doesn't seem to work, when i press the home button the default tw launcher launches
Sent quite a few text messages and emails today and closed both the applications a few times in error as the homepage button is right under the space bar and very sensitive!
I suppose I will get use to it however with time.

This is what I fear the most when I first heard about the software button. Hopefully my fingers will get used to it.
It's not too different from having a capacitive button right below the screen. Just need to type a little slower I'd say

Yeah, I'd say having software buttons and having capacitive buttons are both equally bad for this reason. This is why I prefer real physical buttons.

YT guy also agrees with you. Win. Win.
Try a keyboard on which you can set the height of the bottom row. Thumb keyboard for example or smart keyboard. Btw as the developer of thumb keyboard I plan to add an option to add extra space under the bottom row of the keyboard so it floats a bit above the keys.
They just need to make the softbuttons hide when the keyboard is open. Not hide completely but minimize so it would require 2 taps. One to maximize the buttons and one tap to go. Or shuffle them around. Or add a forth softbutton (search?) So the alignment isn't directly below it.
It happens even on my G2x. I think its just growing pains when moving into a larger screen. Going from a Nexus One to a G2x (3.7" to 4") messed up my typing until I got used to it.

I think Google just needs to figure out that having a virtual home button is a really ****ing dumb idea. Apple figured this out with the iPhone 1. Why the **** can't Google get a clue already?

You're the fellow behind Thumb Keyboard? I love TB Keyboard! I've emailed you a few times about custom auto-corrections. Please implement them soon! It's the only one single thing missing from TB Keyboard.
Edit: And yes, I can vouch. Thumb keyboard is excellent and allows you to adjust the space bar line.

I'm working on a update in which I want to include the new spellchecking options offered by Ice cream sandwich. When working on it I also want to look at some options to customize the suggestion model. For now I'm planning to add the new ICS suggestion model as an option. For me it isn't as useful as the current suggestion model used, but I'm sure for others it will fit their typing style better.

That sounds terrific.
Will custom auto corrections be in an update after that? I think since everyone types a little differently and thus makes their own mistakes, custom auto corrections will go a long way in helping everyone's typing. For example, I know I constantly hit "km" instead of "I'm". It'd be great if I could set up a custom correction where every single "km" typed will correct to "I'm."
landscape ftw tbh

Virtual buttons are awesome. They just need tweaks. Perhaps just reordered. Or perhaps make the icons further down on the screen and make the hit area smaller while the keyboard is up. There are lots of solutions.

They are virtual? (I had to guys.)
For starters? No physical buttons = bigger screens for the same real estate since you don't have to have the space for actual physical buttons and as an added bonus less complexity and chance of something physical breaking or going wrong in the device since it's all screen. You could argue that costs come down do to less hardware and time to actually make a device that's all screen. I'd also say if you wanted to add something down the line with the virtual buttons it's easy: software tweak.
You can do a lot more with software than you can with hardware.
I want to add shortcuts like I did with my Palm Pre. I want to type 'omw' and have it corrected to 'on my way'
Is there an option I am overlooking in the settings?
You can add words or phrases in settings-language and input-personal dictionary. Good luck.
That isn't what I'm looking for...
For example, I want to physically type 'omw' and when I hit the spacebar, I'd like it be "corrected" to 'on my way'

Smart Keyboard also offers Auto-text function..which is what you're looking for. I too wish the stock keyboard allowed this, and i'm not sure why Android has yet to implement it in it's stock keyboards.
I haven't used Smart Keyboard yet since moving to ICS, but it's a great KB. You can add swipe functions, such as swipe to delete word, swipe to bring up a number keypad etc.
I just made the switch from the S2 to the Nexus, and love the phone minus two things...
I really dislike how the nexus doesnt start to search contacts when you start to dial there name or number... any way to flash the touchwiz phone app?
And the smiley face icon that pops up in the notifications and the stock messenger app icon are a REAL dislike, any way to use the touchwiz messenger app?
Hmmm... mine will pop up a contact as soon as you type in a couple of letters. You can also hit the microphone on the home screen and just say "call Mary" and it will do it.
Like if the person's name is sarah... on touchwiz you can start to type S A R
and it will filter the contacts and display the first couple that match, and when you continue to type it will narrow down the contacts... my nexus just displays the dialer

T9 Dialer.
You might find alternative dialers in the Market.
If not...custom roms have this option.
Ok yeah I was thinking that I might have to resort to flashing a custom rom..which i was going to do anyway
Do you by chance know if using the galaxy S3 launcher brings any of these features?
I know im going to get flamed for mention this, but i do like a FEW things from touchwiz such as the phone and icon... could you recomend any of the custom roms?
would there be a way to pull the apks from a 4.0.4 build of the s2 and use those apks?

You need more than just the apks, you need all of the other touchwiz BS. And the launcher isn't going to bring the functionality either.
There's a S3 add on pack that might suit your fancy. I recommend flashing it on top of AOKP, it was buttery smooth with no problems for me.
