Duplicate data/apps folder - Wildfire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok so heres whats bugging the hell out of me.....
Certain cm7 based roms are creating duplicate apps folders within data app folder itself eg. Data app folder has all apks inside but there is another app folder which also has all the apks inside again repeated on and on, last check was 39 created sub folders lol. Ok its not funny!! Now when i have used dt a2sd this the moves over into sd-ext data apps and reproduces exactly the same process.
On very 1st boot of ? Roms this bug is not present until the phone is rebooted then it occurs, so im guessing on every reboot its duplicating the apps folders resulting in huge memory consumption. The 39 folders on last check were in total 986mb wtf is going on ANYBODY KNOW?
Edit: flashed stock cm7 backup using dta2sd and this bug is not present, however it is mirroring all my apps from data/apps in sd-ext data/apps so i have 2 sets of apps present but its not duplicating the folders within folders.
" I'm not lucky,I'm blessed "

Not entirely sure mate, check your init.d scripts though. First place I'd check.
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using xda premium

Yep did that, even removed all scripts except standard cm7 ones. Maybe something left behind but just keeps happening. I agree though mate cost its always with x Roms with preinstalled ****ty scripts etc etc. Think we got a fully working LeWaos now though over in LeWa thread. Woo woo.

Sounds to me as if you have a symbolic link acting as a subdirectory entry within the 'data' directory that is pointing to the directory itself, hence the infinite loop
Have you tried deleting it? (After a backup, of course)

Yep but deleting one results on all being deleted thus leaving me with no apps. Its not on all Rome just a handfull of custom cm7 based.

[Q] running EF02 with Urban ROM, uninstall app ?

Okay so I tried to post in Urban Inception thread but since I only lurk and flash I can't LOL
so here's the deal. I have the latest purple recovery, EF02 and EF02 modem, I flashed urban, and then flashed his add on
I cannot uninstall preloaded apps. This is my first gingerbread so I don't know if there are drastic differences, but I typically use root explorer and move the apps in question to a different folder on my SD card to back up, or just delete. simple as that.
so I did this to some of the add ons/rom apps, and they stay in the app drawer, and market, installed apps. but are not in system/app or data/app....I did even look in data/data thinking maybe it doesn't clean up after itself but even after deleting left overs its still shows
any suggestions?
Is there any way to lift the block on my account so I can post in Dev forum. I'm not a Dev wiz but I've been testing Rom/kernels since my moment on SDX and had switched over here since I got my Epic, Gtab (sweet!) and daughters intercept because there is better community support.I might ooooops with a duh question here and there but I typically have some common sense about posting "How do I turn on my phone????" in the Dev forum
thanks in advance

the apps should be in /system/app/ or /data/app/ and you should be able to remove them with root explorer just remember to remount writable before you go to move/erase one of them.
and to post in the development section i believe you need atleast 10 posts
thanks I did do that actually, it's usually the first thing I do, like I wrote above. I either move them (take them out of system/app or data/app) to make a back up at the same time (before there were so many flashable restore zips lol....or just straight up delete them
I did do that and they still show in app drawer, installed apps and market, they show with that generic icon, they do not show in system app....they are executable and don't update from market with you try but show up none the less....I was assuming it was rom specific, which is why i wanted to post there.
I don't know if it was something written into the add on pack offer by the rom developer (compkid?)
but thank you for responding, oh and yes i was mounted R/W it wouldn't have deleted from system otherwise...werid there's a trace left???? grrrrrrr just driving me nuts

I have noticed that I have had to delete the apps from system/apps folder and data/data folders. Try looking that folder as well and see if the apps are showing in there.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App
yes I did delete from both. I did notice also that some were located in both
so when i look at settings>applications> manage, they are still listed, as com.....etc
and grayed out, and sd symbol...when i click on them, all options (uninstall, clear data, force stop) are blacked out
I looked on my sd card and they are not in .secure, android/data etc
I ran the terminal and ls'ed /mnt/asec and they are not there either
so here's only thing i can think of: when I ls -l system/app all the system apps have rw-r--r--
i can write to it, ie copy and paste via rootexplore but is it not letting me execute install???
so should i chmod...only thing is I can't chmod system/app recursively??? keeps saying bad mode like it's not recognizing "-R"
maybe I'm off and the permission have nothing to do with it
thanks for the suggestions so far, if anyone else has an idea or knows about the permissions and whether that's what's going on let me know
or where those are hiding, it says sd in the app list but i couldn't find it anywhere and I didn't notice any sdext partition
so got it????
I went back to stock, fresh clean odin, odined purple CWM, flashed Kernelplus EF02, 3x wipe, flashed urban again, this time I DID NOT do the add on and it's been fine, doing nothing diff than usual and when i delete an app from system or data, it's gone from app list, market,
so I don't know what's going on with that compkid addon zip but the only thing i did different this time was not flash that and everything is behaving normally
If you make changes to the system, clearing the dalvic cache and fixing permissions should help clear the remnants of removed apps.

I want to make sure I have this right. You deleted the apks from both folders, did a reboot and the apps were still there? Or did you just delete from the two folders and not reboot before checking if they were still there?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App
Sometimes if u reboot the go away also.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App
oh trust me i rebooted...they were not in the folders (system, or data), but still in the app list (settings, applications, manage apps) and market and appbrain still tried to update
in manage applications it showed them as greyed out, and when i clicked on that all options (clear data, uninstall, froce stop etc) were blacked out and unclickable
this time around i did all things the same (ef02 from odin, flash CWM purple, su.zip, 3x data wipe UI ROM) except installing that add on package of extra apps and I no problem deleting anything from system after installing urban inception Rom...added a theme and still no problem modifying
weird huh, I haven't opened the zip, and to be honest I can follow it but I'm not a dev so i wouldn't necessarily recognize anything
Ok, compkid is big on his icons and themes. Check these three spots with Root Explorer or something like it: system/app, data/app, and data/data folders. The third was the last spot I found some things left to delete. I think that should take care of any leftover files that are keeping them from disappearing but in the OP Compkid does suggest using 7zip to delete unwanted apps before flashing the folder. Hope that may help

any idea why those grayed out icons would have a tiny sd (sd card im assuming) in corner...they were the ones that came with the addon, not user installed. I did peek in data/data but theres a good chance i missed something. I also for kicks checked everywhere in my sdcard like i mentioned earlier...just never seen an app left like that with an sd on the blank icon
issues resolved as far as my phone but i have this need to know issue haha
i should have gone through first, i did notice that but i was being lazy i guess

You have got me there. I haven't run across that before. Did you possibly move apps to SD or is that an indicator of such since they are saved to SD? Not sure on that one..just some possibilities. Maybe someone else has some ideas???
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App
well i didn't move those over for sure, it was es file explorer, twitter (maybe), facebook (maybe), samsung app store (another maybe) i was looking at so many things in half a day, having not been on xda in awhile, catching up on all the gingerbread leak stuff and new CWM and trying to make sure i read through everything before playing that i can't remember all of the apps exactly (one smack for not writing it down), but i remember specifically one was es file explorer
i've never seen that either, with the green/white square icon, and all the menus blacked out when i click it....never seen that ...haha I'd love it if someone knew so i wouldn't have to sit here pretending I'm not still annoyed in the back of my mind, wonder if i could ever find happy gilmore's "happy place" instead of little green and white icons
So if you long press on those Android boxes that used to be apps and hold them over the trash can you can't uninstall them? I use Zeam Launcher and that's an option on there. What launcher are you using? It sounds like you are close to where you want to be now...
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App
i can delete them off the desktop fine, but they are still in the system someplace...the app manager still shows them there...those icons show in drawer, in app list and in market update however the update was unsuccessful...the app manager shows them in the list when i click on them, you can't do anything, every option (uninstall, clear data, move, force stop) is blacked out and not clickable
sure i can delete the icon but it's still tucked away somehow,
also like i said earlier, something else was buggy where i couldn't drop apps, in the system/app folder to install (YES I clicked R/W)....i couldn't re install via rootexplorer even the ones that came with add on....i've used many roms since i got my moment and 2.1 came out and then began my flashing addiction and i've always been able to click and install, it might prompt me that it's already install do i want to proceed, but would install over the other and complete successfully....every time it said install unsuccessful.

[SCRIPT][CM7/9] /datadata/ low storage notification lagless fix - init.d script

Hello fellow I9000 users.
tl;dr - This fixes your low storage notification problems just by flashing it on CWM.
Disclaimer
First of all, I'd like to inform you that this post is a compilation of the work done by drafnel on the CyanogenMod forums, revthanki on the XDA-Developers forum, and as such I take little to no credit in it, as all I've done was ask for drafnel to help me in the cleanup code for me to put it in a flashable zip.
Sources:
http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/39718-workaround-for-small-datadata-partition/
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1444333
Also, as you should know, you take full responsability should data loss or other kinds of damage occur.
Introduction
Lot's of people have encountered the problem where their /datadata partition fills up and then apps begin force closing. This is often confusing since there is usually a lot of space available on the internal 2GB storage partition. But these are two different partitions on cyanogenmod. The created the datadata partition on the fast internal memory so that apps would start up and run faster (i.e. less lag), but it is only about 170MB (which can't be helped).
One thing that can be done is to move the contents of /datadata onto the 2GB /data partition. That will solve the space problem, but then you have the lag problem. So, what we need is for the files that take up a lot of space to reside on the 2GB partition and the files that are accessed frequently by an app to reside an the fast 170MB partition. The files that are accessed often, or that affect app startup speed are the sqlite database files and the xml preferences files. These reside in the databases and shared_prefs sub-directories in each app directory. Drafnel has written a script to perform these operations.
Requirements
Samsung Galaxy S based phone (GT-I9000, Vibrant, Fascinate, Captivate, etc.)
Kernel that supports init.d scripts
How to use it?
As you would flash a ROM update or a Kernel:
Download the file to your sdcard.
Reboot your phone into CWM.
Choose 'install zip from sdcard', and choose the script from there.
It will run on boot everytime. It's pretty light so your total boot time shouldn't suffer. It will only do the operations if they are needed, and it will clean up after itself. No need to worry about broken links or stale resources.
What it actually does?
On every boot:
Runs a check to see if /data/data is still symlinked to /datadata/
Moves everything that isn't performance critical from /datadata/ to unlinked /data/data/
Cleans up old databases from uninstalled apps
Other stuff to watch out for
Titanium Backup users should tick the Preferences > Troubleshooting settings > Follow all symbolic links option
SlimICS users should follow this procedure
Changelog
11032012 - First working release.
LOL. I posted a request for exactly this script in the mintberry thread a few days ago!

According to this post, you can now force TB to follow all symbolic links for backup and restore.
what if i already moved all my apps data to sdcard? do i move it back to internal memory then flash the script, or just flash the script then move the data to internal memory? which is the correct way?

Thanks! I'll try
AFAIK, if you have moved your apps to the SD card using the regular method (Apps2SD), the script will still work. This is because there's always leftover data on the phone, which then points to /.android_secure/ on the sdcard.
This script only changes the location of some data, but it's transparent to the phone.
If you don't feel safe about it, a full nandroid backup will restore the system to whatever setup you have now. (it also backs up what's mounted on the sdcard)
Well done! I knew I was never going to get round to this I'll close my old thread and redirect people here. Before I do so:
1) does the stock CM9 kernel support init.d scripts? If not stock kernel users will have to follow the manual method.
2) maybe it's worth putting a capitalised warning in your post to get people to set the option in Titanium Backup to follow all symbolic links
I flashed this script already but the low on space notification is still shown. It's definitely not working.
Do I have to create .nodatadata file inside /datadata and reboot now?
Sent from Ice-Cream flavored SGS GT-I9000 using Tapatalk
Free space in datadata folder,
Before flashing the script = 25mb
After flashing the script = 146mb
Definitely works without any lags.. one might experience lags on the first boot but after another reboot all gonna be super smooth like before!
Thanks a lot!!
It deleted some of my apps like Dolphin HD. I'm running CM9, with IcyGlitch Kernel. Oh well, restored.
Gr8 work
Many Thanks,
i have been waiting for this script ever since Darktremor Apps2SD (2010 !!! )
thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great Job!
Excellent, it's very smooth like before, thanks a lot.
aha! that's the reason why all my apps suddenly began to lag like hell and some time after that force close. had only 1MB free space on /datadata partition lol. script works like a charm! thx

I heard some kernels don't load init.d scripts on ICS, might be related to that.

Media inaccessible after 4.2 SDCard move

I can't view my pictures after upgrading to 4.2
Example attached.
I tried viewing them using different apps and even on PC. Nothing. I cleared media storage data and reflashed my ROM. Full wipe, ect.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
From what I know, on Android 4.2, system moves all the file in sdcard directory to sdcard0 directory. This means that all the apps that rely heavily on sdcard directory will not recognize the files now. I heard that you can simply just cut and paste all the file, but good luck with that. It'll take forever

Already tried that. No go.
Can't view them or can't pull them to PC?
I read that CWM was creating a /0/ partition every time you flash, so if you flash several times you could end up looking like /0/0/0/0/0/sdcard/. Kouche is supposedly fixing the issue, maybe he already did. In addition to not finding your media, if you needed to restore a backup in a pinch you would be effed. Only passing on what I read.
Patience...
On the first boot after reflash, the media scanner needs to go through one full run-through, and then your media apps have to clue in. Give it another reboot or two and it'll be fine.
However it sounds like you impatiently diddled with it as many flashers do... so I have no idea what state it's in by now
I had the same problem on my nexus 7, just deleting everything on sdcard except for the 0 folder and copying everything in 0 to sdcard did the trick for the data itself, but I still have to start over with games while the files are there. Trying to figure that one out now.
I think my pictures are actually corrupted though. Its not finding a lot of my music either.

Need help for 4.2 users : About emulated and legacy folders

As the title, is it normal if we get those folders after update to 4.2 ? Because as far as I read the problem when updating to 4.2 is only 0 folder.
I was using PA 2.54 that based on 4.1.2. I have installed latest TWRP. Then made a factory reset, after that I flashed PA 2.99. And it created those folders. Please help. Thanks.

and this is why I want a physical SD card in my phone... this emulated BS is driving me crazy today... over already accidentally deleted files thinking this so called linked directory was not a real directory ... it is in fact a fake directory with real actions... come on google... 1 directory to call home... not the multi linked mess of fake folders ....
/rant (GNexToro(HWv9)-TapTalk2)
Does anyone know what directories/folders are safe to delete? I have an entire duplicate of everything across two folders.
They reside here.
/storage/emulated/legacy/0/
/storage/emulated/0/0/
They are exact duplicates. Same size, etc.
Which is safe to remove? I searched for like a day on this forum, and many others. I have been trying to figure out which is safe to remove, but I am more confused now then ever. :silly:
I feel like just picking one to delete to free up space and if I muck up, I'll restore from a Nandroid.
The 0 folder is the new directory.
located at data/media/0
Created when you upgrade from 4.1.x to 4.2.1
The other folders you see are links to these folders, not duplicates of what you have stored in these folders.
Installing the latest recoverys will take care of the extra 0 folders ie 0/0/0
If you delete the folders from one of the link folders, you may delete the actual folders. They don't take up space.

Hey, thanks for the reply.
I do have the latest recovery, but apparently if you updated to the latest CWM after moving to JB 4.2 you are still gonna get the folders. Updating before going to 4.2 would have prevented this. Well, this is what I get from reading other messages and forums.
So I am wondering if there is another way to sort these so it's not so confusing.
If not, I'll accept it and may roll back to 4.1, update my recovery, then flash the 4.2 rom.

i'm still not sure what the actual presentation of the data loss that i heard about was, it wasnt people simply not finding the right path to the data was it? but i also dont get why so many people are so keen to remove a link to their internal memory. Why is it so bad for it to be there? just dont go into the folder
a lot of people seem to get that it is an exact mirror (it's just like a shortcut in windows), so just use one, and whats the bother?

They arent exact mirrors. The fact that I have to go through four virtual SD cards to find something I downloaded that's buried in one of them. Its a total pain. Which one is the real one?

From what i see, reverting back to 4.1 won't do it.
You have to go back to a particular stock 4.1 then install latest CWM recovery. untested by me. There is a guide around but i've lost the link.
For me I did a full manual wipe of everything (including SD card), then a manual reinstall of cwm and a 4.2 rom.
I have a 0 folder, but i don't have a 0/0/0 folder created when switching between roms.
Need someone clever to write a clear guide and have it stickied
I too would be interested to know if a solution has been found yet. My legacy folder is taking up more than half of my internal storage. Is it safe to delete?
Sent from my GT-N7100 using Tapatalk 2
I didn't think my dirs were duplicated at first, and the other day I investigated more. One directory structure looks exactly the same, but when I went thru the diff folders and compared between the two, alot of the folders didn't have the same contents. Some folders were even empty and it's clone had data in it, settings and whatnot.
I may post a screenshot once my phone is charged.
/emulated/legacy/0/0/
Is completely different from
/emulated/legacy/0/
The data is diff sizes if you compare both of those folders.
Why Android went this way by setting user accounts/profiles is beyond me.
Here is an example pic. I am not going to take screenshots of everything tho, obviously.
On the left all the folders and data is older then the data in the directory on the right, so I am thinking it is probably safe to delete the older data.
Any ideas?
Here is another example.
What is in the legacy folder on right, is totally diff from what is on the left, but in this case, the data on the left is now the newest data, where the right has no data at all.
Just noticed /emulated/legacy/0/0/0/ also has totally diff contents then the first two I mentioned and the folders vary in size dramatically.
It's a bit frustrating.
EDIT: Added another pic.

Please correct me if im wrong in my thinking. Its normal if I flash from 4.2 (for a day or to) then flash back using a nandroid to 4.1 to have a left over 0folder sitting in my main storage SDcard0?
So when im back on 4.1 I have Sdcard0/0 thats where it ends for me as of now. I flash back and forth all the time. I also get legacy folders but as of yet there always emty. The 0folders left over (mind you im on 4.1) im only testing 4.2 but the left over folder 0 does contain a lot of folders though only data is located in the duplicate android folder.
Questions so being that im on 4.1.2 again what do I do with the left over folders? Up till now I just use windows copy them over and let all the folders merge. Seems to work most the time but It can cause issues.... there gotta be better way? How come I get left over crap in a 0 folder every dang time I flash back from 4.2 to 4.1
Thats normal? Oh BTW im on newest TWRP installed from GOO. I am running Jellybam 4.1.2 I don't delete folders just merge them back into my other folders but maybe I shouldn't do this?
I dunno when im on 4.2 I don't have any issues except that I think this concept is some stupid guys idea of trying way way to hard to be smart. Smoked a little ot much weed before he came to work ya know?

I use Apex Launcher but you don't see it in the images. I think you are referring to FlashFXP which is a file manager I use to move files and folders between my PC and my phone, and to move files and folders between diff folders on the device itself by connecting to my phone in two instances.
It's my understanding the "0" folders are designated for the different user accounts.
If you go to JB 4.2. and then go back to 4.1 I believe the files from your 4.2 install remain intact(Or at least the file structure). No data is actually wiped unless you intentionally do so.
Now, I am just someone who flashes casually and I wouldn't consider myself an expert. I am confident in my skills, just not at a point where I can say anything with serious conviction. So your mileage may vary.
I actually found out which set of folders were the ones in use, and I ended up doing a nandroid, and then deleting everything else on my phone to be safe. I have rebooted several times and haven't had any issues. This was a few days ago.
Remember too, if you restore from an older nandroid from a prior firmware version it will roll back whatever kernal you currently have, etc. It basically brings your phone to the exact state it was in when you did the backup.
Good luck with whatever you do! :cyclops:
AHHHHHHH All my precious data on internal sdcard GONE. All because of the stupid linked legacy folder! I was just trying to delete 1 duplicated (or so I thought) mp3 file, then Google had to come into the action and screw everything over!
I'm done! I'm done with all this BS. I can't even sleep properly! Just let me enjoy my summer

If you just deleted one file... how did literally all of your data get erased?
I... what

I deleted the undetectable, sneaky, linked legacy/emulated folder because it was in /sdcard. So it portrayed itself as another folder, but in it's entirety was the /sdcard itself masquerading as emulated/legacy causing ones mind to think it is an expendable piece of foolery. Linked folder(/sdcard->emulated) contains emulated folder which links sdcard, but it was placed in sdcard so it's entire existence is invalid. Inception eh.

Could you give us all a pointer as to which folders you found safe to delete--I'm sure that we could all do with getting that bit of extra storage??

[Q] Two Internal Memory Slots???

For some strange reason i have the normal internal memory but also another one under the 0 folder inside of the internal memory. So now i have excessive memory lost because i have two of everything plus some other files/folders inside each memory unit. This is real confusing for me but i noticed it started after i installed JellyBeer, i switch back and forth between JellyBeer and stock and Vectus. Vectus and stock both use the same memory but jellyBeer has its own little thing goin on. TWRP also uses the second 0 folder as its main instead of the actual main one, ES Explorer uses the main one, SMS Backup And Restore uses the second one, MyBackup Root uses the main one after i set it to, and on and on with apps that deal with files. Only one that works right no matter what is music, even download folder is wrong. Any suggestions???, if u understand what im trying to say. Also theres another copy of everything in the data/media folder. So in total i have 3x as much space token from me.
Very well documented, you should search it.

Surprisingly I had the same issue. It was reading from two different spots but when I plugged into a computer it only read from one, I couldn't save all my stuff cause I couldn't get to it. The only way fix it is unroot back to stock and reroot the device. That's what I did anyway, and it fixed it. I think its from flashing ROMs cause it never happened before I gave cm a try. I hope this helps in any way.

The 0 folder is a feature of AOSP ROMs. It has something to do with the multiple user support of JB. When you flash an AOSP rom, it will create a "0" folder for that specific ROM. Even with an app like Root Explorer, getting into the standard SDCard folder will be basically impossible. I personally have not found a way to do this, but I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than I could. Interestingly, the reverse is not true. If you flash a Stock ROM, a la Lifeless 14, you can go into any and all "0" folders. If you take the time, you can go into each and every one and delete it without any harm to your phone without having to do a factory reset.

just to throw it out there flash the original stock rom before going to lifeless... if you dont its not gonna work out well and u just have to be rooted all in all to see the "0" folder...
Well honestly that seems to be a lot of work for something simple if you have to partions and can only see the 0 folder simply use any root explorer and go to root>data>media and you will find the rest of you files there

I tried this and it did not work for me. Maybe an error in the flash?
Anyway, the way I detailed is the only way I have been able to access all data after having a "0" folder created.
