System updates ? - HTC One X

Hey sorry if this was addressed already in another thread. Just picked up a One X yesterday. I've since unlocked bootloader and rooted phone. Just playing with stock rom for now before I jump into custom rom.
My question is, I keep getting notifications for system update available. Should I avoid these updates ? don't want to loose root and unlocked bootloader
Thanks!

Just do the update and then re-root - bootloader isn't touched once unlocked unless you manually lock it yourself

If you have already flashed a custom recovery, you will need to flash back the stock recovery to apply the update.

Yeah when I unlocked bootloader, I immediatley flashed cwm. Hmmm seems like alot of flashing back and forth for these updates.
Should have done all the updates first I guess
Maybe I'll just flash an already tweaked rom

When you update it updates your hboot as well as your rom. Its worth pointing out that if an s-off exploit comes out for an earlier version of the hboot you might not be able to downgrade. If you're not having specific problems such as screen flicker I would not update.

If you do upgrade then given the number of problems people have it's also a good idea to make sure a RUU is available that matches the version you intend to upgrade to. That way if everything goes south you can flash the RUU and get it back up and running.

New Ota Update

Hi guys
At the moment i've recieved an update which says the version code is: ota_btavo_htc_eu_2.10.405.2-2.09.405.8_release567cypyi0feo4th5.zip
My current version is froyo 2.2 now, should i let my phone to upgrade this update, or will it downgrade my phone?
My phone is also rooted, is there a problem about this?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Don't use it as it will mess the phone up...
So i think my guess is right, this update is for version 2.1 right?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
No, it's the 2nd 2.2 patch...it updates 2.09.405.2 to 2.10.405.2
You just can't install it as you're rooted

Eddy, I'm quoting your post on the other thread for clarification..
If this is an OTA, why cant he update it via Recovery? Would it still mess up the system?
It CAN mess it up, it's never a good idea to flash a stock update on a rooted phone...read other posts (not just mine ) and you'll see other people say this

Understood..
I'm little bit confused right now, sorry for being a rookie but can you explain this a little : "You'll need to turn off signature checking in your Recovery and then flash the update.zip as you would any other OTA but yes it should go through"
What should i do now, unroot? if so how, or what's this update's benefit, if its not so necessary i can pass it..
thanks by the way
Easiest way - find a custom ROM based on that ROM version. Most Sense-based ROMs should be on it by now
Other option is to unroot using the 2.10.405.2 RUU, or the 2.29.405.2 RUU. Then root again should you want to but if you're just going to put a custom ROM back on then there's no point

[Q] Update 1.29

Hi all,
I unlocked my boot loader and flashed clockworkmod Recovery V5.8.2.7.
I just received the update from HTC:
1.28.720.10 to 1.29.720.10 for Asia India. When clicking on the file to update, the phone reset itself and the clockworkmod recovery screen appeared with an error.
So I was unable to update the phone.
I have uploaded a screenshot with all the info.
The phone is an HTC One X unlocked version bought from amazon (Made in India)
I am not sure what other information is required so if you need anything just let me know and I will update.
You need to flash a stock recovery prior OTA update. The update will fail with a CWM recovery installed.

Flash a custom rom instead. Most devs have all the latest OTA updates in there builds anyway. As soon as a new OTA update is available then the Devs will update there roms.

If you would like to stay with stock kernel and ROM, there is no other way.
Even if you choose to flash a custom ROM, you will need to do these steps anytime you would like to go back to stock ROM delivered in the form of an RUU.
See this thread for installing RUU's after custom ROM
Can you recommend a decent guide how to flash a custom rom and a good custom rom to use.
Thank you all for your quick responses.

You can find what's available in this sticky thread.
As for recommending, I would suggest you check out the OP pages for different ROMs and read up on the latest posts in each thread. This will give you an idea on what the ROM looks like, the features it supports and the level of support you will be getting for each ROM.

NO. Your phone should have the original recovery on it and, if it's unlocked, it has to be relocked to get the RUU to install.

Does any one know How I can install JB? I have unlocked and installed custom room. I relocked the phone but can't return to stock as there is no ruu available for my software version. I have the ota update on my phone but when I try to install it doesn't work.

There is a thread in here (it's quite new) somewhere on backups for different versions, which you might be able to install.
There is another thread on using an older RUU, extracting the ROM and boot.img, and installing them (I think).
Ultimately you want to get to 2.17, 2.18 was unofficial, so I suspect the OTA will only apply to 2.17.
Edit: I might be making that up, maybe 2.18 was official.

I think The OTA is official, its from HTC and i downloaded to my phone ota. It was my phone that adviused me on the update The version is 3.18.751 on the update. Every time i try to load the update it goes to the fastboot screen and wont let me install the update.
2.18.751 is official, release not long after 2.17 OTA. It contained small fixes for taiwan chungwa's One X. If I am not wrong, it doesn't update hboot and recovery version, affecting ROM only.
For OP:-
Best options was using your nandroid backup.
OR
Grab the firmware.zip inside 3.14.751.20's OTA, then flash it like how they did to .401.
OR
There are a custom RUU that can help you convert your phone to taiwan unbranded CID (709) then receive 3.14.709.20 OTA. Your CID will change to HTC_621. You will need unlock bootloader for this method.

Ok i have successfully upgraded. Mudito i used the tool here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1604439
I flashed the recovery image off the OTA update. Im now in 3.14.751.20
I will say i made an error and luckily i didn't brick my phone.
Bacislly i followed the steps from the link above on the video placeing the the official images in the relevant folders instead of custom ones.
I didn't place the correct files on my SD so after doing perm root the phone was locked on a screen(never seen it before so dont know what to call it). Then i realised i hadn't put the files on sd luckily when i reset the phone it turned on and then i downloaded the update and it installed perefctly.
but the used the official recovery/ boot images etc.

Hey, I got the EXACTLY same problem as you do - although I'm not using a custom rom, just messed abit with mine too much (CWM + root, something messed up so I can't update even going back to stock recovery), so can you please explain step by step what I should do to get the JB update?
Thanks alot!
(and will this make my phone able to get the next update if one will get out too? I mean - is it stock rom?)

Ok do you have 2.18.751? If you have this version I can give you the update as I have it on pc. Its 3.14.751.20. I just have to work out how to upoad it to xda site.
I woulnt follow my steps exactly as I'm lucky I didn't damage my phone.
The up date has firmware.zip that contains boot.img, recovery.img etc. Follow the instructions Hansen toolkit video on the link. I flashed the HTC recovery and boot image. Then went to perm root my phone. It was on a screen I don't know what to call and was stuck there as I didn't flash other recoveries like cwm etc.. I then rebooted by power&vol and downoaded update again and it instaled. Note my phone automatically advised of the OTA if yours hasn't then there is something different.
I would highly recommend NOT to following my steps. Follow tookit video. That should get you there.
It is the official update from HTC so it should allow future updates.

Thanks guys.
Finally I went the other way... I was trying so hard to do this that soon I realized that I will be getting a custom ROM in a matter of time. But I usually use Stocks Modded ROMs so I did this.
Relocked the boot loader.
Flashed Firmware.zip from the OTA 3.14.751 from OTA.ZIP file. My word here is USE THE FIRMWARE FOR YOUR CID!!! ONLY THAT ONE
Flashed CWM 5.8.4.0 Recovery (i had an old one).
Downloaded Custom ROM (tried 2 in two days so far. same procedure, ARHD and InserCoin)
Flashed Boot.img from that custom ROM.
Went to Recovery, install ZIP from SDcard. and Flashed the custom ROM.
Preety Neat I must say.
Enjoying performance from JB... Photo CAM is insanely FAST
Thanks to Everyone. XDA Is a great place to find info but it could be messy some times.

Shelby5, Can you please send me the link to the video? and yes, that IS my version, and I've been notified of the update - but because of my modded rom couldn't install it.
JB requires a newer hboot, no? mine currently has 1.12, and I've understood that it requires 1.33, so does it cover that too?
Thanks!
about the ZIP file - is it the one that your device downloaded OTA to install? cause if so - I got that one. and if not - I'd appreciate if you can upload it even to dropbox or something for the day and tomorrow so I can download it
Noodlez I can do it for you later Today. Ill msg you later with details.

You will receive OTA updates so long as you are on the stock rom with stock recovery (with stock CID or S-OFF) though I recommend having S-OFF if you intend to do so as an extra precaution.

Be sure to check my edit. HTC OTA/RUU's have bricked phones with a modified CID and S-ON on previous phone(s) so I recommend having S-OFF just in case.
You might lose some standard apps, but since they are on the data partition, which unlocking wipes, it shouldn't cause a problem.

ota update problem ! help😔

Rooted my HTC m9 (unlocked the boot loader , flashed a custom twrp recovery, installed supersu through it) and I am still getting ota update. But when I try to install the update ( going from 5.1.1 to marshmallow ) the phone restarts and get into the recovery.
I tried to restore the nandroid I have made since I rooted the phone, and tried to update again, but still didn't work !
Actually the phone is working great but all the solution I tried to get back to stock , and take the ota update didn't work ( even with an RUU , which I may not have found the right one).
Below is a pic of the download mode
Any help will be apreciated

Please what do you mean by "official" status ,and how ?
And also if I buy s-off (using sunshine app) what next ?
Why on earth are you rooting if you don't know anything about it?.
Official means "as it was from factory" the device knows that it isn't as factory.
S-off means you can flash any rom and brick your device even quicker.

You have to be 100% stock to take an ota. This is a security feature to prevent bricks, which can and have resulted from people trying to take otas when rooted.
There are multiple threads on how to do this. Start here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/one-m9/general/stock-nand-backup-ota-update-collection-t3132698

Another thing,
After I have unlocked the boot loader, I did a twrp-backup .
So I don't need to download another one ,right ?
So long as you have the 4gb backup of system then you're golden. You can't do another until its stock stock stock because the partition is now modded!!.
S-off will help against bricks. You must still have the official status to flash a signed official stock rom but s-off isn't counted/seen. These are ruu.EXE
Otherwise yes, any rom except signed official while rooted with s-off. You can install unsigned "offical" stock roms and flash them straight away. No messing about resetting official. These are ruu.ZIP.

This needs some nuance. Being s-off will prevent you from getting into situations where you can't boot because of some security protocol, but can't fix the problem because you can't boot, for example if you relock in bootloader with a custom recovery but don't have "Allow OEM unlock" ticked in the OS.
But being s-off also opens up many other avenues for brickage that don't exist when s-on. A hard brick can be as simple as flashing a custom splash image for the wrong phone.

Got you now !
I just restored my twrp backup ( BTW it's 9.8gb not 4gb) it contains a backup of all the partitions.
Now, instead of going s-off and use ruu to get back to stock, is there another way for so ?
