Hey everyone,
Can anyone tell me if they've experienced this problem too please. I keep losing one particular contact on my HTC Desire. Once I've saved the contact to the phone, it could be there for a day or for 5 days before the cantact is deleted on its own accord!
Any ideas???
Many thanks.
does the record contain special characters? google sync doesn't seem to be able to handle these

Nope, nothing mate, just a plain old name and a phone number.
When you save it, try saving it as a google contact, then sync it. I had that problem till I did this.

I was set in Google Contact and my Contact still deleted from my Contact
How to fix it?
Try adding it on your PC (in Gmail, via browser). I know it's not really a fix, nor it helps you understand what's going on, or prevent it happen with another contact but ... it's worth trying.
Its actually losing any new contact now. I saved a new one last Saturday, and now its "lost" it already! :-(
I had this problem on stock orange Rom.
Have had no problems since I rooted.
Guys, it seems to happen to any new contact. Any idea why this is happening? I'm not even close to the maximum number of contacts.
Anyone else have this issue too?
I had this issue with my Hero, that it would delete the second phone number I added to a contact, everytime I synced.
I got around this by changing the sync options to "replace item on PC" in the conflicts section, and it worked.
It seems for some reason the sync kept thinking the new data in the phone somehow is the older one or someting.
Give it a go and tell us what happened.
But this isn't even happening when I sync mate! :-( It just doing it randomly, any new contact I add.
Guys, was just checking System Updates on my phone, and Software 1.21.405.2 was available. I've just downloaded and installed it, was looking through me phone including my messages and noticed its added one of my missing contacts!!! :-D Hopefully was bug has been fixed!!!
I had a similar issue a few days ago - I added a couple of contacts to one of the default 'Groups' (Family, Friends etc).
Once added they disappeared from my contacts list on the handset. I moved over to the 'Call History' panel and found them, and switched the group option back off. But they were still not showing in my contacts. I thought they'd been deleted.
I jumped into G-Mail Contacts on the PC and found that they were still in the 'All Contacts' list, but had been taken out of the 'My Contacts' list.
By selecting each contact, and clicking the large 'Move To My Contacts' button on the top bar, they instantly reappeared back on the phone again.
Hope this makes sense and stops anyone wasting time trying putting the contact info back in again.
All this happened before the latest 1.21.405.2 - maybe this has been fixed though.

This is why I suggested adding a contact in Gmail. If you have problems with Google apps (gmail, contacts, calendar) it's allways good to check with the mothership (Google) to see what's going on.

I understand what your saying mate, but I'm a bit of a tart, I'd want all my contacts the same and be on the phone, not as SIM, Google, etc... I know what your saying is an easy fix, but it shouldn't be like that, the phone should bloody manage something simple as remembering a phone number! lol.
Anyways, fixed now, job done.
Yes I have the same problem. I hardly ever sync my phone because I have a Mac. Today my contact of my husband just disappeared, this contact I use the most, has the most details within it.
I know that the new download may fix this, but I use Skype on 3 and I do not know if skype will work after the upgrage. I use Skype to contact my family in South Africa.
I've noticed lately that when creating new contacts on my Incredible, I don't have the option to create a GMAIL contact. When I try to add a new contact, there's a loading screen for something then where you put all the info. I have an unrooted Incredible with 2.2
Are you using a third party app for contacts? I just checked mine and it works even on CM7.
No I'm not using other contact apps. I've been using other messaging apps though.
Another question about a smartphone in general, could I use my Incredible as a prepaid phone because?

Sorry, I don't know anything about putting an Incredible on a prepaid service.
A search here or on google could yield results.
Back to your contacts problem. Could be a gmail sign in problem on your phone. Have you changed your password lately and signed into your phone with this new password?
Someone who knows more than me feel free to chime in!
Haven't changed my password yet, do I don't think that's the problem.
After I upgraded to stock 2.2 I noticed the people.apk was changed much. In 2.1 if it was a google contact you could assign custom Names to Numbers/emails and name the custom label. In 2.2 only custom is an option and can not rename the label. And in answer to your question on 2.2 creating a new contact would always default to creating a phone contact, I had to goto the drop down and pick the google account I wanted to add it too. If you are having problems, try removing and adding that account or clearing data. Have you tried with a different gmail account?
I have a weird recent issue where some contacts are showing up as '614...' rather than '04...' or '+614...', so they don't dial, even though the stored number is '04...' which dials fine. I noticed with one contact that if I de-lined Facebook it defaulted back to the actual stored number of '04...' - any thoughts? The Starburst ROM dev has not heard of this issue.

Thanks guys! The thread is about HTC Sync corrupting Email Addresses in Outlook 2010 though, I searched Android Forums and couldn't see one about Facebook sync error, do you have a link handy or is that actually the right thread?
It seems to effect some contacts with phone numbers in their Facebook profile, that over-rides my contact details with the '614...' number that doesn't work. So i have to de-link Facebook for those contacts.
message deleted, wrong thread.

Here is what I did, this is only a partial solution:
De link the accounts.
Now select the account on your phone which has the correct number and now link it to the FB account. I think the account which is chosen first overrides the info in the "linked" one.
OR
You have to do this everytime you have such a contact:
dial the number from facebook. hang up once the dial screen comes into play. Go to your "call history", long press the contact, select -- Edit number before call (I think this facility is only on sense based roms, correct me if I am wrong), punch in the correct number and now you can dial.
kinda sucks but this is my workaround.
sounds like I'm not alone. so first of parent account overrides?
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
Tried going in to primary correct contact and linking, didn't work, will try the other way around.
edit, didn't work either, facebook always overrides.
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
Try this, works for me (but not in the Sense Contact widget)
- Edit the contact in question
- Change the original number from mobile to fax
- Save the changes
- Back at the main contact view press and hold the 'fax' number and set to primary contact
- Edit the contact again and make it a mobile again
- Save changes
This should then show the correct format and allow you to ring the contact
If only Facebook would allow people to enter the number as they want, with or without international dialing code
Well as a workaround that actually works, thanks! At least I can hobble along now until this Facebook sync problem gets fixed. Any idea what's causing this or if it effects only some phones?
Another one here with the same problem. It's so damn annoying!

Facebook sync?
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
There's a "me" contact register in People app.
How to edit it? Or how to merge it with my already existing "me" contact?
Not sure if there is a way to edit or merge it, but I renamed it to myself and signed into Google+ and then a few minutes later it had sync'd all my info over.

So the only way is creating a Google+ profile? I don't want to use Google+.
It paired with my G+ account automatically, otherwise just open it then go Menu>Edit and add some fields
Would be a lot easier if I could just merge with the contact I had already created with my information.
Besides, if I put a phone number in the "me" contact, would it go to Google+ profile?

Just delete that piece of trash Facebook account and get Google+. If you do understand it, you won't regret the change.

If you inputted your name into the "owner info" during setup it replaces the "me" contact.

The problem is none of my friends are on Google plus, which is kinda the point for a social network and since I rarely post but only stalk lol, G+ doesn't make a huge amount of sense for me at the moment besides keeping a barely there profile up.d

Fair enough. Before ICS, the connection between the Me contact on the phone could have been made to the "me" contact in Google Contacts from Gmail, if your phone number stored on your SIM card (check it in Settings-About phone-Status) is exactly the same with the phone number from the "me" contact in Google Contacts from Gmail.
Dunno if you followed me there, but if you did, give this a try. Also, you can change the phone number stored in SIM card by using some old Nokia/Samsung/LG phones that have this option in their settings. Just try on as many old dumb-phones as you can.
Why you need to edit yourself?
Its you with your number..why to change your own number to a wrong one!?

Yeah, I'm following.
In fact, been there, done that. I had that problem of "telling" my Nexus S that contact "Thomaz" (this is my name) was me, so my picture would be shown in SMS app when I replied a message. Took an old Motorola V3, edited my SIM card stored phone number, and it worked.
I guess this would also work with Galaxy Nexus, but I was wrong.
I used to have a "ME" contact but its no longer required.
Now in the people app, there is a SECTION labeled "Me" with my name as the contact.
Just delete everything else and use it. FYI I do use Google+ so I don't know if it came there or not.

Facebook is for connecting to people you already know. Google+ is for connecting to people you should know. I hardly know anyone on Google+ and I've connected to people because their posts interest me. I don't wade through nearly as much "had xyz for lunch" posts on Google+.

Oh, okay. Sorry, couldn't have assume that you already knew that.
How come it doesn't work ? I tested it right now and it works. I cleared the cache for Contacts Storage and Google+, set Google+ to not sync contacts, then let the Contacts app sync with Google servers. After that, it showed Set up my profile under ME. I tested to see if I show up in SMS app, but a message pops up saying: The contact doesn't exist.
I put my name and my phone number EXACTLY as the number written on the SIM card and it worked. In SMS app, in a sms thread, if I touch the spot where my picture should be, a pop-up shows my name, picture and even my phone number. I assume that if I also put my email and other info, it will definitely show those too.
Checked again. Actually, even if I put only my name in the setup, it still shows from the SMS app, so I really don't understand where the problem is.

Let's see if I get that clear: you put your name and phone number in "me" contact, exactly like it's written on the SIM card, and now this info is shown in SMS app when you touch the spot. But do you have a "lambda30" contact, or you had to create a "lambda30" profile under "me"?
That's the point: I haven't had to do that in Nexus S. When I edited the phone number on the SIM card, it found a contact "Thomaz" with that number, and it understood that "Thomaz" was me, nothing more. In SMS app, I could see the picture assigned to "Thomaz" (my picture, actually), could touch it to see my contact card and etc. No need for a "me" profile.

No, it works with lambda30 name under Me.
Actually, I have observed that there are 2 different types.
1. In SMS app and Contacts app (non-Google apps), the info of your profile is taken from ME contact (which in my case is synced with Google+)
2. In Google apps, like Google Talk or Gmail, the info is taken from a separate contact from Google Contacts in Gmail (it is located in Other Contacts), which you can edit in Gmail.
It really is kind of stupid, but that's the situation...
LE: Also, in this situation, I think that the SIM card phone number doesn't even do anything... because like you said, on the Nexus S, the Contacts app would have automatically created your profile; which it doesn't here... So I think that the SIM card number is useless now.
So, if you want a ME contact that is uniformly seen throughout Android, you have to edit the ME account in Contacts and also edit your contact in Gmail in Other Contacts with the same info. But it still doesn't really do the trick, because the Gmail contact will not have a high-res picture of you. But, rather than having nothing, it's still good.
Along the lines of discussion here:
I'm looking for a way to BACKUP the "Me" contact. Because it doesn't seem to be sync'd via google sync / gmail - on restore of my phone to defaults, when google pulled down all my contacts, the "Me" one I had filled out wasn't there.
I use TiBackup - any idea of which file I need to backup to make sure I have that? Or a way to manually back it up?
Can any of you guys add twitter information to your "Me" contact? It seems like only Google+ works and you cannot "Join" any contacts to the "Me" contact.
In my contact manager, I often include some descriptive text in the phone number field to differentiate one "Work" number from another.
For example, I have two "Work" numbers for Verizon. In the phone number field, after the actual number, I'll enter "Tech Supp" for one and "Billing" for the other. On my phone, it looks like:
Work: (800) 555-1212 Tech Supp
Work: (800) 555-1213 Billing
But dialers convert that text and dial it as numbers. Dialers I have tried will dial the above numbers as:
800555121283247877
80055512132455464
Is there a dialer that will ignore text that appears in the field with the phone number and/or simply dial the first ten digits??
Thanks.
Jace
I've never seen such a dialer, especially since some letters are actually used for things like a 'hard pause' and 'wait'.
There is a cleaner solution however, but it'll take a bit of work on your part.
If you use Google Contacts as your primary contact list (and I highly suggest you do for all sorts of reasons), you can actually change the text displayed next to any phone or email simply by clicking where it says Home/Work and selecting CUSTOM. Name it whatever you like and that label will carry over to your phone in the S3's default address book.
For example I have a few listed as:
Work - Direct (Line)
Work - Main (Company)
Note: I had an issue with a previous phone where not all the letters showed up so I tried to keep the names shorter by omitting the parts you see in ().
It works great however and it's quite easy to set up on a PC when on the Google contacts page. (I'm not sure if you can set custom on the phone directly).
Good luck
Thanks. I'd always heard that the characters for pauses and waits were "," and ";". but a little Googling reveals that "p" and "w" are used as well. You learn something every day, eh?
I use Microsoft Exchange for my contacts and sync w/ my phone because the contact list is shared with other people. Calendars too. I'll look into syncing with Google Contacts, but am a little leary of putting all that data in the cloud with reports of all the breaches occurring these days. Still, if Google Contacts can sync (two ways) w/ MS Exchange and with our phones (also two ways) so we are able to edit data on the phones and have it sync back to MS Exchange (through Google Contacts), that would be a workable solution.
Thanks again for the input.

While the solution may be workable, it is rather brute force to edit the 4000+ contacts I have. Is it acceptable to leave the thread open in the hope of a more elegant solution?
