[Q] [ARC Lt15i] rooted .42 FW with locked bootloader - how to upgrade to stock ICS? - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Guys,
I have a Xperia LT15i with Locked Bootloader which is rooted and currently on .42 firmware.
With the new official Sony ICS update release, i'd want to move to stock ICS with latest firmware, can anyone please guide me how do i do it ??
Do I update using PC Companion or can it be done OTA ?
Also, once i update to stock firmware and stock ICS, is it still possible to root my device and keep the bootloader locked ???
I need the right advice, i am scared and dont want to end up with a bricked device...PLEASE HELPP
EDIT: I know there are lot of threads on the forum, but I am not an expert and scared to cater to this update and lose my beloved phone ...
if some one can just guide me with a step by step process, it will help a lot, it's a sincere request..!!

First of all, you can indeed upgrade!
ICS is not available through OTA, so you should go only by PCC for now.. But check if PCC shows that the update is available, because the update is available for only selective SI nos (to check your SI no remove your batrery and look in the sticker below the battery on your phone).. If PCC shows the update, then no problem!
If not, try downloading the ICS ftf file and flash using flashtool..
And for your last question, yes you can indeed root with a locked bootloader.. I'll post you the link below
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1683189

Thanks a lot prasad for the reply, I found my SI number in the update list yesterday on the sony blog post.
For the rooting process, is there a better explained tutorial ? The link that you have referred is good but lot of things are just to be assumed
There is a link to the sony blog with a similar tutorial but I am not able to locate it, can you help me find it please ?

Something There Might help ^
devise is already updated and rooted now i want to update to 4 without losing the rooting!
And a ton of people are going to ask the same question. Sigh!
As of yet, there's no OTA update roll out for the latest .368 firmware for the arc. Some regions have the OTA update for the neo.
We ALL will just have to wait a bit longer for SE to do the honours. Patience mate!
so how other arc users managed to update their devices ?

If you have an unlocked bootloader (as adviced in your first post), then you must look in the development section, they have the stuff you need.
If you have locked bootloader like so many of us, you just have to try and keep hitting the "update button" in the settings menu and hope for the best.

Yes you can trick PC Companion to flash a different firmware by editting the build.prop file in /system. There's a thread explaining how to do that, search for it.
But flashtool is even easier, why would you want another method??
A third possibility would be Wotannserver but I don't have experience with them, I just use flashtool.

[Q] Downgrade my arc s from ics to gingerbread.

I recently upgraded my arc s to ICS beta. Since it has no bluetooth wifi or the android market, i want to downgrade it back to Gingerbread. Can some one please help? ps. stupid me did not make any backup before upgrading..
Thank You.
Have you tried the Official ICS yet? Maybe it will resolve some of the issues you were having.
If you really want to downgrade though, all you have to do is flash the respective ftf file using flashtool. You'll find lots of guides/resources for this in the development section.
I dd not try the official. where can i find it? i installed beta only.
thank you.

Generic Trade Central Europe 1 (2.3.4) (1254-2716)
india generic hardly matters as Central Europe i believe is the same as if u flash this via flash tools. then as the phone will start u will on top get the language "hindi" option aswell or india "english" .. you can root this, then update via wifi to .62 n u will still have root
if u have unlocked ur bootloader make sure u have locked it so u be able to update to .62 via wifi

You can always root your device. You will still receive OTA (over the air) updates. I highly recommend to root your xperia S, because it is very easy and I can't name a negative thing about it. To root your .55 firmware, search in the android development thread for a topic about rooting this specific firmware. It's called New root method or something like that. I'm on my mobile now so I can't give you a link.
As for bootloader: yes, you can unlock it. I personally don't recommend it, (a lot of others will), because you won't be able to go back to normal and I find it very difficult to do. There are about 2-3 ROMs that can be installed with a locked bootloader. I also have a locked one and used Xzxperience 2 for quite a time.
Good luck with rooting (and unlocking?) and welcome to the forums

Unfortunately No, You Will Not Get Sony Official Update.
Yes Having a locked bootloader is a good idea till JB rolls out

well mate i have already rooted my LT 26i to Jelly bean, it will be June to get official update.
don't worry about the warranty, u can re-lock your boot loader any time and flash it with .55 and no one will know that u had rooted your phone and u can do the official updates with OTA or PC companion or from service center.
i can 100% guarantee u that cz i have already tested it on EMMA ( official software for Sony )
if u want to know the details how to unlock boot-loader, root and install leaked Jelly bean, its all in the forum
if u don't understand then i can help out

I really enjoyed the ROM. It had some nice features (toggles in status bar, CPU over/underclocking) and a really nice look.
To be honest I'm not really sure about OTA updates in custom ROM's. As far as I can recall you will NOT receive OTA updates. But you don't need them, because you can flash the official JB firmware when it's out with flashtool.
Good luck

I havn't tried this one, but I am planning to do so. (after JB ofcourse )
I will stick with .55 firmware now, until JB releases. If I like it I will keep it (will use some mods though).
If I don't like it, I will switch to the ROM above. If I don't like that one I might unlock my bootloader.

nice!!! thank you! so if i root my phone and keep the bootloader locked i can still receive the new update when it rolls out.right?
and one noob question.whats the point of rooting it if not using another rom?just to overclock?
There is no need to worry if u want to root the phone or unlock the boot loader nor u have to get worried that u will loose your warranty.
i have already tried it on official software

One is FTOA another one is through PC Companion...

are you having any problem???
i've heared from sonymobile forum that 4.3 update has lot of bugs.
is it true...??
Give your feedback about 4.3 Jb in m dual....
Pls Reply me Experts.....
Update your phone through pc companion if u did not receive the OTA. Or if that doesn't help, you can download the FTF for the firmware you want and flash it through flashtool. And no, you don't need to be rooted to use flashtool and update

You can update to 4.3 root is no matter
After updating to 4.3 you will lose your root access. So once again you need to root with different methods (see in general section) for that you need to unlock bootloader/4.3 ftf file

Nope you won't get official update from SONY ( If you are in India). But you can flash 4.3 FTF file
Are you from India?
then you couldn't update officially, as "xdasenior' said (as I do)
you could download FTF of 2005 & flash with flash tool
all of these are available in our forum itself.
for rooting, you had to download both older & newer firmware (4.2 and 4.3)
then use niki root
