How to backup the EFS without the use of commands? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I have heard of a few people who have basically ****ed their phones by someone messing up the EFS without having a backup at hand.
How can I backup my EFS partition without the use of either commands or apps? Is it just to copy the /factory folder?

or use this toolkit to back it up and restore it.

If you clicked the link it's an android app that backs it up but had no way of restoring it.

I noticed that too, that's why mskips tool is so awesome.
I normally do not depend on toolkits to do my job but this was too easy to pass by.

It sure is..
I can't think of anything that could go wrong with using a toolkit to backup and restore.

Need some Guidance on Backup & Root?

I no longer root, or modify anything deep like roms. I'm all default right now. However, I really am disipointed with Androids ablitiy to back up. I recently did a hard reset and can not believe how many customization's I did unit I had to recreate everthing.
My question.
Is there still no real solution to make a backup of your Android Devcie that includes system settings and App data without rooting?
If a root is required, Is there a simple minimal root procedure that would give me the ablitly to make full backups using something like Titanium Backup?

If you want to ROOT then there's a lot of one-click root options out there. You just have to search. Its quite easy.
I would recommend rooting if you're trying to do a full system backup. Titanium backup will backup all the programs+data but it won't backup your home screens and all that stuff. Nandroid backup will, however. For that you will need a custom recovery. Either CWM (through ROM manager, it's the easiest way, or TWRP).

Please....for the love of god/bubba/spaghetti monster.... read read read. Then do some research, and read some more before rooting. The guide mentioned here will teach you all you need to know. Just be sure to follow it. If your new to rooting I would NOT use a one click method. You don't learn anything that way.

Ta backup

My last post may have been a little long winded, so I'll keep this one short. Has anyone here successfully used the ta backup and restore function in flashtool? And is it similar to a nandroid? I've searched everywhere for info on this, but it's a fairly new feature.
Thanks
What about an adB restore. Does that work like a nandroid?

My bootloader is not unlockable. Hopefully it will be soon.
Edit: Reading the cwm thread, doesn't say anything about needing an unlocked bootloader. However there are a ton of people saying it is not very stable. In the mean time I'd like to modify the remove bloatware script on here in case i need to restore from ftf.

Right ... rooting and flashing cwm does not require unlocked boot loader.

Yes, flashing with a full wipe will return it to factory, CWM, initd and root will be gone.

Not necessary as in if you do not do it it will not work. It is optional you can do it if you want to or not up to you.

[Q] EFS Backup, Before or After Root? S3 i747

I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 on AT&T. I'm thinking about rooting it but i don't know if i will mess up, and i don't want to brick it. I read that the efs folder is very important, not sure why entirely, but i should back it up. I searched but still am not sure if i am supposed to back it up before or after rooting, also if there is anything else i should do/backup. If anyone could give me some help, or tell me what thread to find the info in, it would be greatly appreciated . I am entirely a noob on Android, so i may be clueless on stuff.

Oh ok, thanks, i knew i was going to mess up some way, and posted in wrong thread lol
I recommend EFS Professional (requires root). Make sure you do an NV backup! If you flash an AOSP ROM, you might lose your IMEI. It's a PITA to fix, unless you've already made a backup.

I just used mskip's Toolkit & let it do its thing. If you're concerned about the flash counter, you can use mrRobinson's method.

Ok, yup thats the toolkit i got. I'm not too worried of the counter because i read that it could be reset if needed, please correct me if im wrong.
Yes, generally the only reasons you'd want to clear the flash counter is if you're going to claim warranty, or selling the device. There are some apps, though, which won't work if the flash counter is > zero, like AllShareCast. In that case, you'd definitely want to avoid tripping the flash counter.

Ok thanks a bunch, greatly appreciate the quick responses. That won't be so bad because i don't use Allshare, and thinking of flashing the Hyperdrive ROM, which i think will trip the counter either way, all i need now is to learn what ADB is (read it is useful if you mess up and get in a tight spot) and learn how to use a recovery, which i'm clueless on. Again, thanks a bunch!
No prob.
ADB is part of the Android SDK (get it here, then click "Download for Other Platforms" & choose "installer_r22.0.4-windows.exe"). If you haven't installed a custom recovery yet, the mskip's toolkit will do it. If it's not the latest version, you can get them here: (CWM, TWRP, instructions for manual flashing on the TWRP page).

oh thanks for the links! Do you know if ADB is actually useful? Have you used it? Also when i try to get the Android SDK it gives me a 404 error.
Yes, I have used adb. It's incredibly useful if you get yourself into a situation where your phone won't boot. For example, it quite common that people decide to edit their build.prop file without making a backup, then their phone won't boot. Using adb, you can pretty painlessly restore that file, or edit the changes. Note that you should go to the settings on your device & enable USB Debugging! Adb is capable of doing many things, but I've only used it for file transfers & for opening a shell.
Interesting about the Android SDK, it looks like Google changing something around...
I always backup before and after. Just in case.

You can download the .zip just above the missing .exe. You'll have to uncompress the file somewhere, then run the installer (probably something like setup.exe).

Ok with what you already told me I went ahead and rooted. I got Superuser instead of SuperSU and I got the CWM Recovery, though I might change to TWRP because they say it is better, and I think I got Busybox which is some tool for rooters. I made a CWM backup (i think thats what you call Nandroid backup) and the EFS Pro backup. Is there a way I can make sure the EFS was backed up correctly?
Also I tripped the counter like 5 times because it didn't work at first.

Need Stock Rom

I had a backup of stock before root but when i tried to back up to it today it gave me a md5 mismatch so i couldnt back up to it. From what I seen in beaups thread that I need to be on a stock rom and stock kernal for his s-off method to work. Is there a stock rom that I could flash to use the s-off method?
I'd like this answered as well. I think andy's stock rom near the bottom of the page works, but I haven't had a confirmation yet. Also wondering if odex versus deodexed versions matter.
Same boat im in just waiting for somebody to say which one we can use when we are already rooted and unlocked. I dont know how my md5's mismatched on my stock before root backup but I can't go back to it so Im kinda stuck here until we get a answer.

EDIT: Downloading the 1.1 download not the newest. Under old downloads. I would think the more stock the better.

I'd test 1.1 but for some reason it won't let me copy the zip over to my phone... Keeps saying the device has stopped working or has been disconnected. Tried many different USB ports.... Going to have to bluetooth it which is going to take even more time...

IIRC: If you have an md5 mismatch while trying to restore in a recovery, try this process:
IF YOU HAVE A BACKUP I HIGHLY SUGGEST STORING THE BACKUP FILE ON YOUR DESKTOP JUST IN CASE!!!!
Boot into whatever ROM you're on ATM.
Browse to your ClockworkMod (or TWRP backup must have an accessible folder for it's backups) using a Root file explorer, which I happen to use "Root Explorer" and open the backup file you just made.
Inside of that will be a nandroid.md5.
Delete that file and reboot into recovery, and try restoring again.

Ok i found it it was under /data/media/clockworkmod/backup but i dont see any files inside of that that are a md5 file im going to look in the data.ext4.tar file and the system.ext4.tar.a. Does any of those ring a bell? i see the boot.img, data.ext4.tar.a, recovery.img, system.ext4.tar.a, and system.ext4.tar.b. Thats all the files inside the backup i made before i rooted.
