Hello people, just a quick question. I've got a nice new case for the phone and it's all great, fits great, but I've noticed that wifi signal is much weaker.
I however did notice before I installed the case that when I placed my hand or whatever over the top of the battery cover the signal would drop almost completely and instantly, but now it's just a lot weaker.
I flashed a different radio 12.39.60.19_26.06.04.06_M (apparently this radio gives better signal for cost of battery life) but it's still the same as 12.28e.60.140f_26.04.02.17_M2 which I used before.
Now my question is, is there a even better radio or some kind of a mod/hack for a better signal?
Thanks!
Signal is fine without the case, signal deteriorates with the case, therefore the radio firmware needs replacing?
Why not replace the case?
I just bought this case, I'm not gona go look for another one, plus this one is awesome and will keep my DHD safe.
I'm just asking if people who test radios have a better suggestion or if there is perhaps some other way of improving the signal?
So I recently was able to replace my Samsung Fascinate because of the ED05 Update not fixing the missed call problem.
I recieved my DInc2 yesterday at 3pm & have noticed that it takes a minute or more to open links from Twitter in Dolphin browser hd and that the 3G icon and bars fluxuates from no bars, no 3g icon to full bars to 2 bars etc..
Just wondering if you guys no of a simple fix, if its a known issue, and your thoughts
Thanks

If you're not in a very well covered area, it seems the Inc2 doesn't work so well. For me, being in a well covered area, data functionality is actually exceptional (2mbit speeds not uncommon, usually 1+mbit in most areas, and only a few areas under 1mbit).
This seems to stem from the type of antenna being used. There is a discussion on trying to figure out the best/easiest way to fix this. So far what has been tried is aluminum foil in the back cover (this doesn't seem very well substantiated), small bus/magnet wire (personally tested and works to boost signal, but may not be worth the trouble), and the possibility of conductive ink to extend the existing antenna (possibly the best solution...if it works at all).

I've had a EVO and currently have a EVO 3D. I'm considering taking the plunge with a E4GT. I'd like to hear from some of you that have also made this same move. What do you like/dislike about the new phone? I read a post from one person that had made the move, and gained some valuable insight. I couldn't find any others, so I'm posting this.
Things I'm most interested in hearing about:
Battery life (stock)
GPS performance
Overall speed (I will replace touchwiz with Launcher Pro or ADW Launcher)
Signal stability
Call/audio quality both speaker and mic
Anything else you've noticed that you like or dislike
Thanks in advance!
I came from the evo 3D. I love the phone, but the reception on it is horrible. I'm sitting in the same spot and it fluctuates between 5/6 bars and 0. Its definitely worse than the Evo 3D's reception problem.
Battery is better than the Evo 3D
GPS is way worse
Speed is incredibly faster
Call quality is just a little bit better. nothing to fuss over
Sense 3.0 is better
HTC updates their phones 4 years (exaggeration) before Samsung does.

I had the Evo 4G for about a year and made the move to the SGS2E4GT when it launched. I to replaced Touchwiz with Go Launcher EX. This is phone is unbelievably fast. The battery beats the pants off of the Evo. I can go all day with moderate use (surfing the web, watching youtube, playing games and making calls) and still have plenty of battery left when I get ready to go to bed.
The screen is incredible and the camera is top notch. I have had the loss of signal problem but didn't have it till after I rooted the phone. There is a fix in the works and it's easily fixed with a quick 15 reboot. This phone is extremely light and thin. I really don't have anything bad to say about it. No lag whatsoever, everything runs smoothly. The call audio is great. The GPS took a little while to aquire my position but has worked fine since. Signal wise I haven't had any problems.

Battery life - about twice the battery life of Evo3d. Just the other day I had 18 hours on charge, with 5:30 hours of display on time, and I was at 30% battery.
GPS performance - I only tested it once. It locked in instantly inside close a window.
Overall speed (I will replace touchwiz with Launcher Pro or ADW Launcher.)
Much snappier than Evo3d. Samsung does an excellent job for hardware acceleration of TW launcher and browser. Which is also why you don't want to replace it with LP or ADW - they will not be accelerated - meaning more battery consumption and not as smooth.
Signal stability - I really see no difference from Evo3D. Some people report better signal; I've never seen it.
Call/audio quality both speaker and mic - speaker is better on Evo3D, but louder with ET. Call quality is MUCH better on ET.
Anything else you've noticed that you like or dislike
It's huge. It's hard to operate with one hand for sure. I do like the thinness and the lower weight though. And the build quality is excellent.
Screen is amazing - I never thought this possible, but there's less pixelation than on Nexus S at 4.0 inches. And you can actually see things on the screen in direct sunlight, whereas Evo3D is impossible to see under the same conditions.
Thanks for the posts, everyone! This is exactly the kind of input I was looking for. Please keep 'em coming!

How specifically is it worse? This is one of the areas I was worried about, because Samsung has a history of GPS issues. Friends of mine at work have had samsung phones that take MINUTES to lock on GPS, where my Evo or Evo3d would lock in less than 5 seconds, standing right next to them. Is this the kind of thing you're experiencing?

I'm not rooted, and yes I have experienced LOS pleanty of times. The problem is: I had the Evo 3D from the day it came out till about 2 weeks ago. Sprint gave me the Epic 4G Touch because I had a lot of problems with the Evo 3D and was in the sprint store all the time getting it replaced. There is no way for me to return this phone (ET4G) so I am stuck with it till june of next year. I really hope that samsung comes out with a fix soon because its really annoying, and i will never buy another samsung phone again.
Whats the point of having a beast phone when it only gets service half of the time sitting in the same place?
The first time I used the gps, it couldn't get a fix. I let it sit for about ten minutes outside during a clear night and never locked on. I entered the dialer code ##GPSCLRX# then entered my MSL to reset my gps. The next day I tried it again and got a lock in about 10 seconds. Its worked fine ever since.
Had my Evo 4G for over a year before I replaced it with the ET4G.
Battery life - much much better than my Evo ever was.
GPS performance - doesn't seem any better or worse than the Evo
Overall speed - night and day difference with any task. (I am using Touchwiz and love it. Never cared for Sense at all. Gotta love the hardware acceleration)
Signal stability - I actually find my signal to be better than when I had the Evo.
Call/audio quality both speaker and mic - The call quality is much more crisp and clear on the ET4G and my gf also noticed the difference on her end of the line as well. I feel the speaker is louder than the Evo but not as clear.
Other things - The camera is leagues ahead and the screen is absolutely gorgeous. For the entire time I had my Evo I could never find a ROM/Kernel combination that made me satisfied with the phone. With the ET4G I am loving it completely stock (just rooted of course).

People really shouldn't be judging reception by the number of bars shown. I came from the Photon, and everyone was saying it got great reception compared to the Evo3D because Motorola decided to cheat and just display more bars at the same level off reception.
The true measure of reception is the number of dBm under Settings => About phone => Status => Signal strength.

i agree , i think people should start posting there signal strengths in that form instead of 2 bars or 4
Coming from the Evo 4G:
Battery life (stock) - Better, but nothing mind blowing. I have Exchange Active Sync set up for work, and I assume that's a real battery killer. I get another hour, maybe two over the Evo, but it's still not an all day phone.
GPS performance - I haven't had any problem with locking, but I did have one peculiar experience where the Nav program constantly had me on a different street and kept remapping the route. A reboot may have worked, but I closed the Nav program and followed the regular map. I'll have to keep an eye on this,
Overall speed (I will replace touchwiz with Launcher Pro or ADW Launcher) - Soooo much faster. Pretty much every function on the ET is 2-5 times faster than the Evo. Even little things like checking email or making a phone call fly on the ET. It just snaps from screen to screen in a way that makes the Evo look really slow. I assumed I would install LauncherPro, but I've kept TW because it's not getting in my way. And it's really nice not having Sense crash on me 5 times a day. I could reboot the ET in the time it took Sense to recover from the frequent crashes. Since Sense has no program dock (just the phone app), I couldn't do anything while it was restarting.
Signal stability - 4G is leagues better on the ET. It locks faster, it's more stable, and I can get it in places the Evo couldn't lock. It will sleep when used, which means it's not eating up the battery simply by being on. And it doesn't slow down the phone like it did on the Evo. 3G is about the same, I don't really see it as that much worse, and ditto for wifi.
Call/audio quality both speaker and mic - The speaker is louder on the ET, and the call quality is leaps and bounds better. I can make clear calls in places where the Evo would crackle so much it was unintelligible. It's not just a little better -- it's like night and day.
The camera is great, and the camera program is amazing. You can make shortcuts to your most used features. In addition to flash, you can toggle three other features like exposure or speed using a shortcut button. And there is no contest with video recording -- the ET is grossly superior.
I don't miss Sense at all. I never used most of the widgets because of battery issues, and the TW dialer is better than the Sense dialer (I love the swipe left or right to call or text) and it's easier to dial contacts who have a cell and home number. And I like that I can dock two programs of my choice as opposed to none in Sense. Also, TW has never crashed on me.
The App Drawer takes a little getting used to. It scrolls side to side like iOS, and it's slower than flicking to scroll up and down. But it does segregate your most recently installed apps which makes them easier to find. There were a lot of times on my Evo when I couldn't remember the name of the app I had installed two minutes ago. Plus, you can set up folders in the App Drawer to better organize it.
The thinness and lightness has to be experienced to appreciate. The Evo feels like a tiny brick in my hands now. Reading Kindle in bed is less fatiguing with the ET, and with the volume rocker on the other side, flipping pages using volume keys and holding it with my left hand makes it even more ergonomic.
There's really nothing substantial that I miss from my Evo -- there's barely anything minor that I miss. The few things (the security lock timeout is ludicrously implemented and the lockscreen itself is awkward to use) have been remedied by apps.
Just checked gps outside in a car.
Wouldn't lock at all (kernel+rom flashing must have taken its toll.)
I then did GPSCLRX trick, and the gps locked in instantly.
I came from the evo 4g and I love this phone. I'm rooted with the stock pulled kernel and haven't had any issues. IMO, touchwiz is so much nicer then sense and i loved sense. Battery life is phenomenal, I'm a heavy user and my battery lasts all day. GPS locks on quick with no problems, signal seems to be the same to me. This phone is ridiculously fast. The only time I've had the Los issue is when I use a task manager and even then it only stays in Los for a couple seconds. I would take the plunge, its the best phone I've ever owned. But that's just been my experience on it

Signal stabilityfine for me others have issues, ever so slightly weaker than the Evo (barely) but it reports less bars for the same signal so it seems exaggerated when its not.
Call/audio quality both speaker and mic perfectly fine

Came from an EVO 4G. If there was one thing that I would recommend to those getting this phone is to keep the stock kernel.
I rooted & changed kernels and pretty much had all the problems that have been mentioned here and in other threads: loss of signal, GPS delays, terrible battery life. I went back, rooted and kept the kernel stock and I have had absolutely noneof those issues again.
I love the phone. Truly.
Ran both side by side for two weeks straight. Both are good devices. Chose the 3d in the end. The only edge the gsII had was the 8mp camera, but I'm a fan of the 3d feature so I don't mind the very slight trade off. Actually posted side by side pics from both devices for comparison. Not much of a difference. The bigger screen on the GsII is nice, but the lack of resolution takes away from that feature. The two devices are very compatible in every other way in my opinion.
Got rid of the 3D for this, and am very happy I did. Call reception/quality is so much better, I was tired of dropped calls on the 3D. The camera quality crushes the 3D, sure no more 3D pics but after 2 weeks I never even turned 3D on anymore. This device is a bit snappier, I was also shocked to get better battery life. I remember the debate between the cores of both phones and the 3D was the winner as this core was going to chew up the battery. Thats not the case at all, I can go a full work day (12 hours) with heavy data use
What's going on guys, I'm having some serious issues with my HTC-10 I just got on Thursday from swappa... I'm trying to figure out if these issues are just software or if my phone is a dud...
Here are the issues:
1) Extremely bad cell reception, generally I have 1 bar, and rarely 2 bars and even maybe less than 5 times today I remember seeing 3 bars. I was getting this low reception in areas where I used to get maximum service.
2) When using ear-buds or other headsets for phone calls, the other person can barely hear me... if at all. It's bad enough that trying to use ear buds for a phone call is basically impossible.
3) While in speaker phone mode, the other person has an extremely hard time hearing me even if I am 5 inches away and speaking quite loud. Yet google can hear me for voice to text decently.
4) Randomly after a few hours of use, 2 cores of the processor seem to get stuck... they never drop below 1.8ghz, this just makes no sense to me... Why would 2 stay locked up so high? Two show something low like 377mhz or something, but the other 2 never drop below 1.8ghz. I noticed this because I was confused as to why the phone was suddenly very hot and the battery was draining extremely quickly. Like 1% per minute. O.O So i looked and found a setting in the rom I am using (Viper) that shows the Core's Frequencies in the Notification Drawer. Why is this happening?
5) The Audio output from the headphone jack is extremely good, mainly because the stereo separation is just fantastic. BUT... general sounds like ringtones and notification tones are just very weak. My previous daily driver, my oneplus one is just about 2x as loud. Maybe like 1.75x. It's very very noticeable (in a bad way) and I missed 2 calls and several sms messages today due to this.
6) This is the weirdest one... So... just for fun I was comparing the 10 and my oneplus one side by side, doing little "tests" by seeing who could open apps faster. And... the OnePlus One actually beats the 10 about half of the time... Wtf? We had 801, 805, 808, 810, and now 820. So that's Four Generations higher...yet sometimes slower? I'm not sure if this is a "problem" or not, I'm just shocked. The 10 lags in general scrolling times sometimes has this... strange touch delay, but in the OPO none of these issues exist even though the touch screen is off sometimes when typing. Uh... So unsure.
So anyway, can someone shed some light on this?
(update) I forgot to mention that my oneplus one also has this 2 stuck cores issue, but it's 1.2ghz... So I'm just at a loss here.

You got a dodgy phone. RUU if you have no option. Don't know what swappa is, but sounds like second hand sale. Start fresh. You didn't really give much details about phone/carrier/firmware etc, so I'm not sure. I don't have a one plus to compare, but would bet my life HTC is faster. Definitely software related.

AT&T, and the latest firmware that just came out.
Honestly I've had nothing but issues buying stuff from Swappa which always ended with me returning the item and getting my money back.

What? I've bought and sold many devices with issues :0
I picked up a XIAOMI Mi Mix 3 from Micro Center today at what I consider a steal considering the hardware (USD $379.98) and after doing some quick research.
Micro Center is a two-and-a-half-hour drive for me and I was already there, so I didn't have the luxury of time for leisurely research. I usually spend weeks, not half an hour, making these decisions. But I used to be a commercial customer before I sold my business, and I made a lot of friends there, so they don't hassle me about returns; and since I was already there, I figured I'd try it out.
My initial impressions are mixed, but more positive than negative.
Positives
The build quality feels very solid. Actually, it feels like a Sherman tank. This is a pretty hefty phone. It has a quality "feel" to it, though. I also like the flat screen, although I guess that's a matter of personal preference. The included case is okay for now, but I ordered a more rugged one, a screen protector, and a leather holster from Amazon. I'm old, but active; and I don't carry a purse.
Functionally, the XIAOMI Mi Mix 3 supports AT&T's network 100 percent, as far as I can tell. That seems pretty amazing for a phone that technically isn't sold in the USA. I've had phones that were targeted to the U.S. market that had mediocre band and protocol support.
The radio reception is also the best of any phone I've ever used where I live, and I've been on AT&T for a long time and used a lot of phones. The LTE works great. I'm getting download speeds of around 50 Mbps, and I live in the boondocks.
The GPS reception is especially incredible, with TTFF of an amazing four seconds, two meter accuracy in 16 seconds, an average C/N0 around 46 dBHz using 32 of the 35 satellites it caught, with some coming in at 59 dBHz. That's pretty amazing for a phone. It's actually better than some airplanes I've flown.
I didn't mess with the cameras much (I don't really use them that often on any phone), but they seem very good to me. I break out my Nikon when I have serious photography to do, so I may not be the best judge of mobile phone quality. The cameras on the Mi Mix 3 seem perfectly adequate to me; but as I said, I'm no connoisseur of cell phone cameras.
The slider for the selfie camera is a nice feature if you hate the notch. I never cared about the notch, but it does bother some people. I also like that the slider stays in place magnetically (more reliable and durable than mechanical latches), although I do wonder whether that affects the magnetometer (assuming the phone has one).
In short, hardware-wise, I'm happy. The Snapdragon 845 is no slouch, and the rest of the hardware in the Mi Mix 3 seems to use it well. I consider it a bargain for the hardware alone.
In terms of performance, it's fast and crisp. I haven't put it through any strenuous tests yet, but It has a nice, fast feel to it.
Setup was completely painless, it auto-provisioned on AT&T with zero configuration needed, and Google and MIUI restored almost everything from Drive with no issues. Even my DND settings were carried over. It was really pretty flawless. The one exception was K-9 Mail. For reasons I neither know nor intend to bother looking into, neither the app itself nor the settings were migrated. I had made backups of everything anyway, so it was no big deal.
Negatives
I wouldn't say that MIUI is quirky so much as that I wonder what the point was of changing things around for no apparent reason. In other words, I don't think there's anything "wrong" with MIUI based on the few hours I've had the phone, but I wonder what advantage there is to it as compared to a stock Android. I can live with it, though. It's not so much a negative as a "just different," really, based on first impressions.
I also don't like the fact that there's no automated desktop backup software. I suppose I can build something easily enough, but there should be desktop backup. Or am I the only one who actually uses a computer anymore? I guess LG's [usually] competent backup software spoiled me.
I'll see if there's a generic Android backup utility out there for Arch Linux or Windows that syncs by WiFi before re-inventing the wheel. It's not rocket surgery; but coding for the sheer joy of coding kind of grew old for me decades ago. I never bothered looking for generic non-root Android automated backup software before because I never had to. There probably are bazillions of perfectly competent solutions out there for Arch (or for Android itself, for that matter).
In fairness, however, I'm a genuine backup nut. I literally have backups of my backups as far as computers are concerned. Within 20 seconds of my saving a document, it has been backed up to an ioSafe USB drive and a local NAS (the ioSafe, which is a backup destination, is in turned backed up to the NAS), and is on its way to BackBlaze. So my OCD about backups may be inflating my annoyance about not including a desktop backup application with the handset.
Back to the Mix 3, I also found the notifications a bit wonky. In addition to having to give permission in multiple places, the notifications use the media volume instead of having their own setting. That doesn't make much sense to me. I can think of plenty of reasons why one might want to control notifications separately from media. The puzzlement, however, is why they coded it out of stock Android. I mean, what advantage is there to justify the time spent removing a slider that was already there?
Then again, maybe the separate notification volume was an LG thing. My last few phones have been LG. Maybe LG coded it into Android.
There's also somewhat more bloatware than I'm accustomed to finding on an unlocked phone, but it seems lightweight and innocuous enough. Some of it might actually be useful. I really haven't done anything to it except push it to the last screen. At least it doesn't include a crap ton of silly games and such.
The only one that annoys me is that I can't uninstall FecesBook (at least not without root). At least, not in the usual way. I can't explain why because of NDA's I've signed, but I'd rather never use a computing device again than have a FecesBook account.
All Things Considered...
I officially have two weeks to decide whether to keep the phone. Micro Center probably would extend that for me because of my long history with them, but I don't want to abuse that relationship. Besides, to weeks will be enough to decide whether my appreciation of the Mix 3's superb (in my opinion) hardware compensates for my lukewarmness toward MIUI.
Based on first impressions, however, I'm pretty sure I will keep the phone. I love the hardware, and I think I can at least learn to live with MIUI (which is more than I can say about my ex, and she was a lot more expensive and quirky than MIUI is). Or I can root it, although that's not something I'd do just because I'm miffed about having to look somewhere else for a setting and having an inactive FecesBook icon hidden in a folder on the last screen.

Thank you. That worked!

Well, the phone and I didn't make it through the weekend. It seemed like every time I figured out one problem, another surfaced.
The deal-killer, however, was the sound quality the first time I made an actual phone call. In all seriousness, I got better sound out of tin-can telephones made of two soup cans and a piece of string when I was a kid. It was the absolute worst, almost inaudible sound quality I've ever experienced on any communication device.
So I looked up the problem on their forum, and one piece of advice was to factory-reset the phone after an update that I just got last night. So I did that, and it rejected my password when it rebooted. When I tried to do a password reset on the site (three times), I got no response to the email. And when I tried to check it using the phone number, I got an error message that the account didn't exist.
It's a shame, too, because other than the sound quality, I loved the hardware of the phone. But not being able to hear a phone call makes it useless to me.
Oh, well. Ten hours of driving and a tank and a half of gas isn't the worst thing I've ever been through.
On the bright side, when I swapped the SIM back into the phone the Mix 3 would have been replacing, I decided to put a new spare battery in it, too, and charge it on the way to Micro Center. Lo and behold, it didn't overheat. So maybe it was the battery, rather than the phone, that was having a problem. I'll check it out further this week.

Unlock your bootloader then install AOSP based rom, like Resurrection Remix, all problem solved.
Or if you want to stick with MIUI, try EU rom, no bloatware, no Chinese stuff.

You may be right, but how would that have solved the earpiece problem? That seems like a hardware issue to me. If I held the phone sideways like a wing sticking out of the side of my head, I could hear it. But it was still so scratchy and tinny that I can't imaging listening to it on every phone call. Also, it's not the most convenient way to use a phone. I'm old. I still make phone calls.
It's all academic at this point since I returned the phone. But I'm still interested in the answer just for its own sake. Would an alternate ROM have improved the sound volume and quality? If so, then I regret my hastiness because all in all, I loved the hardware -- except for the earpiece.
Thanks,
Richard

Maybe your earpiece speaker had been covered by dust or plastic? The real earpiece is under the screen, you can see it when slide screen down, you can try that and make phonecall to test the sound.
I have no problem with earpiece sound and as far as i known, no one ever complain about it.
And yes custom rom and modder can change the sound quality, there even a mod to turn earpiece speaker into loudspeaker so we had dual rocker.

Thank you. And yes, I did check for plastic when I tried the selfie cam, and I did try making a phone call with the display slid down. It made almost no difference. It was very slightly louder, but no less scratchy and tinny.
Can you please point me to a custom ROM for this phone? I really liked the hardware. If there's a custom ROM that supports everything reasonably well, I might just buy another one and check it out. It just seemed like a hardware issue to me. And maybe it was. It could be that this one particular device had a defect.
Thanks,
Richard

Thank you. I'll check it out. Maybe I acted too hastily.
My reason for buying the Mix 3 in the first place was for a daily driver to replace an aging V20 that has at least one known problem (tired GPS radios) and that I thought was overheating (but which now appears to have had a faulty battery). I didn't buy the Mix 3 as a project phone. I needed a phone to actually use starting today (Monday). I planned to buy something else while I was at Micro Center to return it.
However, because the v20 didn't overheat with a fresh spare battery that I charged during the trip, and because I have another V20 that I use for GPS-dependent apps, I'm not up against a time deadline any more. I like the Mix 3's hardware enough that I may buy another as a project phone.
Thanks again,
Richard
Toggle the loudspeaker setting on and off when you're on the first call after a reboot. Interesting to know this is a Xiaomi bug, not a Xiaomi.eu bug. Once you've done the toggle trick it'll be fine until you reboot again.
As for roms, if you're rooting, having tried several of the AOSP-based roms I'd recommend Xiaomi.eu, everything will work (including the slider & associated settings), it'll be marginally faster (and it's already fast on AOSP), it'll have marginally better battery life, and it won't randomly reboot or go into a reboot loop when charging wirelessly.
I just ordered a OnePlus 7t as a DD, so I have to wait at least a few weeks before buying another Mix 3 lest the old lady kill me. She just doesn't get it...
I do wish I'd known about the bug and the fix you mentioned because it was actually painful to return the Mix 3, so much did I like the hardware.
