Apologies if this has already been raised in another thread, however, I've just got my HTC One X and I've turned off the auto brightness.
However, even with auto brightness turned off, if I pull down the white status bar (or even view anything with a white/light background), the display appears to get brighter. Then when I return back to the launcher, it "fades" back to the original brightness over approx 1 sec.
Is this the "flicker" that people are reporting, or is this simply the Tegra PRISM function? Either way, can it be disabled? If I've set the brightness, I want it to stay that brightness, regardless of what I'm viewing.
Si
exactly the same happens here with my HOX. i dont know if this is the "flicker" everybody is reporting, but a way to turn it off would be nice.
i think thats the wrong section..
however, i got the same issue, but its gone after 3-4 weeks, OR it was fixed by a custom rom.
This is "dynamic brightness" implementation is called "tegra prism". Search for it.

Hi Guys,
So I finally got the desire after being with an iPhone for the past 18 months. Lovely phone so far, even if it feels a little 'work in progress' in some depts.
Anyways!
Have any of you with the phone enabled auto brightness? Does it work? When I jump into the settings to enable it it seems to kick in (once i tick the auto brightness checkbox) but once I actually hit OK to save the changes the screen brightness shoots up again and then doesnt seem to react to ambient light.
weird.
I am running the t-mobile android (uk)
Yep, I have the same thing, glad it's not just me then!
I don't think I've seen it adjust by itself at all...
It works for me and I have seen it adjust.
im not sure really if it works because it always seems the same? i have changed it to 30% now which is just acceptable and we ll see if it gives any battery boost

That's the idea, auto brightness adjusts so that the screen looks the same brightness to your eye at any light level. When it's dark the brightness decreases and when it's light the brightness increases thus you see it as thee same due to the way your eye is already adjusted.

yeah Lol exactly, thats the whole point of auto screen adjustment. if you are indoors all (or most of) the time like me than keep it manual to 30-50%. otherwise leave it auto
Mine works a treat the only thing i do is when i go out the house i turn the brightness to manual and put it on full, as this is the only bad side to this phone the led does suffer in direct sun so full brightness is required.
I haven't seen any change in my screen brightness, whether in full sunlight or middle of the night in a dark room!
Is a bit annoying, would like to know if it can be fixed or we're waiting for the next firmware...
Where's the sensor ? With the Hero, placing a finger over the top part of the phone tricked the sensor but it doesn't seem to on the Desire. Interestingly though, there must be something there, the way the screen flashes up when you remove the phone from your ear

Works fine here
It seems that on my Desire the only time the automatic brightness actually tests the light is when I unlock my screen.
I can actually see the brightness change then, but if I switch lights on/off while it's already unlocked it doesn't automaticly adapt to the light.
I only checked it through the Android SDK using Dalvik Debug Monitor and the phone certainly did continuously check and correct screen brightness according to it. Visually, it was too difficult to discern what was happening and when due to my own visual limitations when the amount of light changed.

I haven't noticed that, but I have noticed that it doesn't go as dark as when you set it manually. It's blinding at night.

Im the exact opposite I went back to skyraider because cm6 rc3 was dark as hell at night or even in a lit room. I had to go outside to get the screen to turn up
I just set the screen on medium brightness, but I miss the auto adjustment like 2.1 had. This is the only thing that is giving me issues. I see that there are some settings in cyogenmod, any way to make up the amount of points of brightness so I don't get just dark/medium/bright?

I had the same problem initially. I think I've got it fixed, though. CM6 is WAY more configurable than anything else I've played with.

Go into menu, settings, CyanogenMod settings, user interface, automatic backlight. from there, you can change the light level required to dim the screen. in the edit other levels menu, you can completely customize the levels and even add new thresholds if you want.
I just adjusted the dim level to 24 and changed the lowest light level to 35. No further problems.
Did the screen setting need a re boot? Mine didn't do anything

Screen brightness changed immediately after clicking Save & Apply for me. I found that there's a big change in the light level going from 31 to 32 (32-35 are all the same, didn't go further) and setting it at 32 seems to work well for now. My guess is that there are ranges for any given value of brightness
I couldn't get the Buttons values to change except for turning them off when set to 0. Even a value of 1 sets the buttons to full brightness, which is disappointing as it bothers me how bright they are.
Anyway, thank you jtcarnes for the quick instructions and thanks CM for the feature.
I personally just use this program called bightness profiles and set it to about 30-40% inside and then 100% outside when needed, atually saves more power this way also.
So the Lumia 900 dims the screen based on white pixel percentage (for battery) like the Focus and Focus S. Is there an extra settings option to disable this like on the Focus S?
What I'm asking is if there is an 'Extra Settings' category in the settings menu with a field called auto display intensity (like on the Focus S). Thanks.
I'm not seeing it. Today starts my 30-day trial to see if it can pull me away from my investment into Android and my HTC Desire..
I think you can just turn off the Auto brightness. There are no other display settings like on the Samsung WP7's
Sent from my Lumia 900 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
Yeah, the screen looks a little dim on the auto setting. Someone said that is the way AMOLED screens are. When you disable the auto and change the setting to high, it looks great. I just wonder what the effect on the battery life will be.
I recommend disabling auto-brightness and setting to medium. I personally use low indoors and medium outside. Auto-brightness should be off to save power.
The original poster is correct. Even on Bright with auto turned off, the message area is grey'ish, but white everywhere else seems fine. I went and tested it with the Focus Flash, and it had the same behavior, except when you turn off the "auto display intensity" (or words to that effect) it goes white. I think the Nokia has the exact same behavior, except that we don't have a control to turn it off. I'm keeping my screen on bright to alleviate this, and I know it's hurting the battery to do so.

Auto brightness = dims based only on the ambient light sensor. Auto display intensity = dims based on % of white pixels on the screen.

Is there a fix to this? I got my Lumia today and when I opened the browser and loaded Google it seemed very dim. Even if you change the background of the phone to white instead of black, it looks almost grey and dimmer than some of the other whites on the phone. Is it a bug? Should I replace the phone for another one, or are they all like this?

"Feature" not a bug. Samsung presumably provides Nokia the AMOLED panel which has it programmed into the firmware. Samsung modified WP7 on the Focus S to let you disable it.
Has anyone noticed that their auto brightness is kind of broken after upgrading to JB? For example, if I'm in a really bright area and go into dark, the screen does not dim itself, however this can be fixed by going into settings and un-checking and checking the auto brightness box.
Obviously this is pretty annoying... Is there a fix for this?

I've noticed the same. It stays bright a lot of the time in dark places. I haven't noticed it staying dim in sunlight though.
To me, the way it was before seemed broken. It would constantly change its brightness level. This was effected by the light reflected off clothing, etc
I love it now

But I Dont find any issue with it either. In fact, if you dig in, you'll find the process consumes 30% lesser battery than before ie. Screen + sensor timing and refresh for both...

I'm actually pretty sure this is the default behaviour for ICS as well its only 3rd party roms that added in the ability to auto dim as well as auto bright the stock way is it only goes dimmer if the screen turns off and back on other wise it stays at the maximum brightness
Sometimes if I'm using the widget to move from full to auto brightness and tap very fast, it'll sit at full brightness. If I toggle slower its fine. Definitely some bug there.
I think auto brightness is much better in 4.1.1. Before it was far too dim, now it seems just right in all conditions.
I'm using the app "Lux Auto Brightness" and it couldn't be doing a better job.
Definitely check it out if you're unhappy like I was with the stock auto-brightness
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
that has been the default behaviour from ages for stock goole rom:
the autobrightness only can increase...it doesn't decrease, unless u lock and ulock the phone or check and uncheck autobrightness
that the intended behaviour google want..the brightness get increased, but not decrease..
So you're saying that the auto feature in 4.0.4 was broken then?

Yes, it delayed the lock screen and when I set my phone down under a bright lamp and it woke up hours later in pure darkness, it might soft reset.
happens to me as well on stock 4.1.1. if I'm in a dark room and put the phone under a lamp or something, the brightness goes up instantly, but it never comes down until I lock/unlock the screen again.
in fact most of the time I think the thing is too bright (but that may be because I come from a nexus one always on the lowest setting since the autobrightness there didnt really work well).
it's a minor annoyance definitely
Same Problem with Note2!
Hi guys,
found this thread during my search for this brightness issue. My Galaxy Note 2 has the same strange behavior. But I figured out something: when I lay down the device to a table or bring it to 0 degrees in my hand, automatic brightness it's decreasing perfectly! Can you confirm this behaviour at your nexus? I guess it's a kind of strange Samsung " feature", maybe?
Thanks, Michael
Ahoy, I was also researching my auto brightness issues when I found this thread. I can confirm the behavior from the previous post on my SGS2 on Jelly Bean 4.1.2.
If the phone is in vertical position and I do the lamp test, it will stay on maximum brightness no matter what, but in horizontal position dimming works perfectly.
Regards,
zytrel.
With auto-brightness turned off and brightness turned up all the way, I am seeing the brightness go down when some apps are launched and turn back up when the app is closed. I noticed this today when launching GoChat and then also saw it when launching the stock jellybean web browser. I am not sure but I think this has only been happening since the last software update (T-Mobile USA).
I wonder if others are noticing this.

From DisplayMate:
Since the display often uses 50 percent or more of the total Smartphone power, various display power management schemes are frequently used. The Galaxy S4 uses one innovative approach to overcome this – when Automatic Brightness is turned on, the Peak Brightness becomes significantly brighter in high ambient lighting than is possible with Manual Brightness, up to as high as 475 cd/m2, which is 34 percent higher than is possible with Manual Brightness. This is done so that users can’t permanently set the brightness to very high values, which would run down the battery quickly. From Samsung:
Samsung Adapt Display: The Galaxy S4 "learns" what you are viewing and adjusts the display's brightness accordingly. If the phone senses you are reading an article, for example, it will illuminate from a more muted brightness.

Well, I have auto-brightness, auto adjust screen tone and power saver ALL TURNED OFF, but this 'feature' persists... and as I said, this is not just during web browsing, this is also during messaging with a 3rd party app, namely GoChat, with black background theme.... this is just not a smart feature.
maybe this is taken care of in the new update. i haven't unpacked it just yet. hoping to do that over the weekend or maybe even tonight.

I have the same issue. Turned everything off completely and it still happens. I posted about a week ago and some people were having the same issue.
Some people said it was adapt display on, but I have it off. Once I switched to.the CM10.1 the issue went away. I switched back to wicked Rom and I'm still getting the same problem.
Maybe a dev will eventually figure it out while building a Rom

It seems like this is a feature that cannot be disabled by the end user. This is from Anandtech's review
"On the brightness front, the SGS4 includes dynamic contrast functions that cannot be disabled and change as a function of what is being displayed. There's an "auto adjust screen tone" checkbox under display but don't let that fool you, that doesn't disable dynamic contrast, just white point."
http://www.anandtech.com/show/6914/samsung-galaxy-s-4-review/8
If it really annoys you, you can always try rooting it and install CM10. I'll be a drastic change but at least you wont have to deal with Samsung's bloat
