Got my T-Mobile s3 the other day. I roam allot on att in my area with my old phone but with this s3 it says I have 3 bars but i get a not registered on network error when I try to make a call. It will do this till I get back on T-Mobile.
Anyway to fix this crap? Is this phone not able to roam?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
You have to go to settings and network to enable, I believe they do charged for roaming unlike sprint tho
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
I checked under settings and the only thing I found for roaming was data. I have free roaming. I tried manually selecting network when the only thing that was found was att and had bars but got the same error. Thanks for the reply

Mm I see that's weird

think I'll call T-Mobile and see what they have to say about it. Will check back for replies.

T-Mobile was no help. They said I should have a network mode option in settings but I don't and my brothers s3 didn't either. His phone is stock no root and has the same roaming issue mine does. This is crazy that we can't roam with this phone.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
T-Mobile escalated the issue to some engineers who have been calling me back. Apparently me and my brother aren't the only ones with this issue but a ton of people have been having this issue.
And there still stumped as to why these phones are missing the network mode option. Can Anyone with T-Mobile version confirm if they have this option?
Settings> more settings> network mode. I have 2 s3 missing that option
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
No, I don't have that option.
But is this what you're looking for?
Powered by the SGSIII
NVM, just saw your post where you said you found this already.
Yeah according to the techs at T-Mobile there should be a 5th option there and he said he has it on his. Can you manually select att or any other carrier to roam on?
Any time we try it fails to connect and returns to T-Mobiles tower.

It's *not* the phone. I have the same problem with my rooted G2. My wife has a stock G2 with the same results.
Likewise I used to be able to roam and force to ATT when TMo was poor or non-existent.
I first noticed that I hadn't seen it roam in a while....like within the last year or more. And the inability to roam *greatly* limits TMo's coverage.
We recently had to travel for a funeral into a very rural area with really poor coverage. Couldn't coordinate with family or friends. No Google Maps. Home security sys and cams were innacessible. We usually care for my sister who has Lupus....we didn't even have a way to check up on her.
In short, I've been a TMo cust for a decade and that experience was enough to make me switch. And the fact that it appears to be a widespread problem that *still* isn't fixed makes me even more angry.
Like you, TMo says it should work. I'm beginning to suspect a SIM card issue.
I think it's the phone. Never had any issue with roaming on previous android phones. Also I unlocked it and I'm now using it with att. Now I can't roam on T-Mobile with it. Other phones on my account that aren't s3 can roam fine.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
I have T-Mobile right now and at my home up until about 10 days ago I received an amazing connection. Data was at 90ms 25MB Down and 4MB UP.
Now I am lucky to ping 1000ms. My fastest DL is 0.59MBPS and I get ZERO upload. T-Mobile has been creating engineering tickets for me with a promised response in 72 hours and it hasn't happened. I've been waiting 10 days now. I am about ready to leave them and head over to Verizon or Sprint.
I had the same issue with roaming with my s2. It's not the phone...I spent 2 weeks argueing with T-Mobile and have yet to EVER be able to roam. My wife has the sensation, now I've moved to the s3 and neither of us have successfully been able to roam. Makes me wonder if T-Mobile is full of **** with their "free" roaming agreements.

For some reason my s3 has the network mode option. I have great coverage here in the nyc area so I have never needed to roam but I do have that option under more settings.

Then it's something Samsung is doing wrong. Like I said, unlocked using att now and can't roam on T-Mobile. It works fine att but roaming on other carriers is still an issue. It's something with the phone.

Which release are you on? Roaming for tmobu is controlled by SIM card. Weather the settings there or not. The towers won't allow you to connect if the SIM card doesn't match

Lol
the phone is working fine on at&t with at&t SIM. But still won't roam to other networks. Did the same thing before I unlocked it and was using T-Mobile SIM.
In the end no matter which SIM I use in the phone it will not roam. It's the phone. 3 SIM cards 3 different carriers NONE WORK WITH ROAMING ON THIS PHONE.

Yes because the SIM cards do not allow you to connect to other towers that are not branded to that SIM card. A T-Mobile SIM will connect to T-Mobile towers and att SIM will connect to att towers.

So what your saying is roaming is no longer possible for any carrier? What's the point of at&t and T-Mobile to having roaming agreements? My T-Mobile flip phone roams no problem back and forth to at&t and back to T-Mobile no problem.
This s3 is the only phone I have ever had a problem with roaming.
I don't think your understanding the "roaming" part of this. So,,,, I have T-Mobile SIM and phone.. I go out of range of the T-Mobile tower. If at&t towers are around the phone should connect to it for roaming.
I have changed SIM cards out, I have also traded phones out. T-Mobile reps agree that the phone should roam. I had free roaming.
T-Mobile has always connected to other carrier towers for roaming till I got this phone.
I'll be borrowing an iPhone tomorrow to check for roaming.

Did you get a new SIM card with your s3? If so the roaming agreements change.
I have never went roaming with my s2 or s3 and they both have been everywhere. Not to mention roaming agreements aren't for everywhere, your area may not have the roaming agreement on that SIM. Have you put the old SIM from the flip phone into your s3? Either way roaming is controlled by either SIM or prl. And since T-Mobile doesn't use prl, it's gotta be your SIM.

Was at Worst Buy today, they said would price match any online price for the Note 2, plus offer me free insurance if broken, or any issues.
I was gonna get the true international Note 2, but worried if it has issued or warranty problems, it would be much easier to just go back to Best Buy than to have to mail it off, out of the country.
So, that being said, I am on Straight Talk, I hate being raped by the carriers and handcuffed into outdated contract system. Would the ATT Note 2 work on my Straight Talk SIM ? Or does the phone need to be unlocked first ?
I never unlocked a phone before. But I always root and install custom ROM the first day I take phone out of the box. Does rooting a phone, automatically unlock it too ?
And how bout HSPA+ ? Straight Talk doesn't do LTE yet, just HSPA+ I know the ATT Note 2 is LTE, but does it also have HSPA+ too, or just slower 3G ?
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
You would have to unlock it, either buy scrounging a code or going to the carrier and asking for one. Rooting doesn't automatically unlock the device. As far as 4G I really dunno, but I'm sure someone will tell you.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Tapatalk 2
I believe you only need to buy the att version of the straight talk sim. No need to unlock. Then you go on their web site and get the APN.

It is not the sim from att. Its a straight talk sim made for att phones. You have to order them online. It uses att network and you would get everything except lte.

On my international One X, I am using Straight Talk with the ATT SIM. In the Straight Talk package, there were three sims to choose from. T-Mobile, and two ATT, one regular size, and one micro/mini, which is what I am currently using.
So can I just take this mini ATT SIM from Straight Talk, and pop it in the ATT Note 2 from Best Buy, and it will work ? I don't need to have the phone unlocked ?
Thank you

Its already been answered and yes ITS BEEN A LONG time since ive even seen a UMTS on my phone. and also HSPA+ is still 3G.... Straight talk Uses Edge,3G, and 3.5G which is HSPA+
Also if the Note 2 only used LTE then people would not be buying it cause not all AT&T areas are LTE...
I am more than happy with 3.5G HSPA+, plenty fast for my phone needs, I just wasn't sure it was included in the Note 2, for some reason I thought was just standard 3G only and also LTE.
Most the time I am in a WiFi area anyways, at Home or Work Office, so LTE not a deal breaker for me.
Thank you

It actually is pretty simple, but you have to have TMobile give you the unlock codes to your phone. Basically once you have the ATT Sim, insert it and your phone should prompt you to enter a carrier unlock code. This is where you enter said code once obtained from TMobile.

You may need to set your APNs if you make the switch and lose data/signal. Just Google ATT APN settings and it will explain what you need to set. (Prepaid plans might have different APNs so make sure you find the right one for your plan)
As far as obtaining the unlock codes from TMobile, you could try saying your leaving the country on extended vacation, that may help, but if your still in contract and they refuse you there's nothing you can do.. other than call back and get a different rep.

Thanks man^^
I spoke with a tmobile rep and they are going to email me the unlock codes within "72hrs" ill be waiting. So after that is done i will proceed with the rest of the process with an att sim.
Yes i will Google the apns once i get the rest sorted out. Looks like its not that hard after all. The most hassle is going to be getting a sim activated since theres no store near me gonna have to order one online

You can always go with StraightTalk. Their plans are cheaper than att prepay and have semi unlimited data.(something att prepay doesnt). And they have tmobile compatible SIM cards. Which doesn't required unlocking. If you receive better service from att then get the att compatible SIM. Will require unlocking for that though

I'd go with Straight Talk also. I just switched my girlfriend over to it because she was paying over $100 per month for a decent service. She doesn't get LTE (but her phone doesnt support it anyway) but for $45 unlimited data, text, calls, its worth it. And it's on the AT&T network.

My phone is unlocked.
Question is, will I get good HSPA+ plus speed on an ATT phone on the Tmobile network. I live in Las Vegas which is apparently Tmobile 1900Mhz, so I am thinking it should work. But I am not sure, so that is why I am asking.

Hello all.
As you can see by my name, Im'a Noob! i have a good understanding of computers and cell phones and can follow directions well but have not attempted anything like this so....
Here's the deal, Today i went to Wal-mart to get a new phone for my wife. I decided on the T mobile Samsung galaxy S 4 (on the Wal-mart family plan $40 a month unlimited) . unfortunately, it apparently does not get signal at my house. What i desire to do is move it to straight talk. because Verizon does have signal at my house. So from this point, is there any way to get this Galaxy S4 to see the Verizon towers and work on the Straight talk network using those Verizon towers? And If So, Can someone please post the step by step instructions (without assuming that i know what a jailbreak or unlocking is) so that i can make my wife happy.
Please and Thank you in advance for all your responses and help!!

Can't be done
Can't be done. T-Mobile is GSM, Verizon is CDMA, incompatible networks.
Straight Talk resells service for the major carriers but for Sprint and Verizon, who are CDMA carriers/networks, you have to get phones compatible with CDMA to use on Straight Talk and vice versa for T-Mobile and AT&T.
ok how about this

Neither the T-Mobile nor AT&T variant will work on Verizon. Period. There isn't an unlock you can do, no ROM you can flash, no special code you can put in to change that fact.
For ST or Net10 to use the Verizon towers you need a CDMA phone, which the M1919 S4 is not. As was mentioned in the post above mine, you DO have the option to run off of T-Mobile or AT&T networks either through the respective carriers or use those towers via Net10 or Straight Talk; but using the Verizon towers in any way is impossible with the particular device you purchased.

Where'd you buy it? I bought mine from TMO and was told I can return it within 30 days for a full refund. As others have posted, you can't do what you want with that phone, period.
Edit: Reread your original post. If you have to have Verizon then the phone you bought won't work. Just like a AM radio won't pick up FM stations. It's that simple. Take it back to Walmart and get a refund. BUT, if you can live with using T-mobile away from home and have wifi at home you can get a T-Mobile plan and use wifi calling and internet access at home, and the TMO network elsewhere. You want to use wifi at home anyway because it doesn't count towards data or calling usage. It's all seamless, so there's no problem using it that way.
Dude seriously I find it hard to believe you don't have Wi-Fi in your home. Because if you do, your problems are solved. Your phone supports Wi-Fi calling and messaging (SMS/MMS). This is why I switched to T mobile.

You can sim unlock then activate with at&T but the signal won't work well all because every carrier use different frequency bandwidth it won't be the same

If you say you paid $650 for it today, then why not return it for a refund if you don't get TMobile service at your house? Why are you suffering yourself all this turmoil?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I do believe the AT&T and T-Mobile variations are able to pick up 100% of each other's bands so this argument is invalid.
