[Q] The best ICS ROM for gaming on the KF - Kindle Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been using gedeROM since v1.25, and I love it. It's fast, doesn't really crash, and the wifi holds up okay. The big flaw, for me at least, is the ROM's inability to play the bigger gameloft and electronics arts games, and I've read that this is a problem in quite a few of the ROMs for KF.
So what is the best ROM for gaming, or will we have to patiently wait?

I've been using gederom as well, and I love it. In fact, I haven't even messed with the processor clocking, and I've got modern combat 2 running quite smoothly. My only problem is I want to get the Sims 3 but can't fix the NaN error.
Honestly, I think sticking with gederom is a good idea.

gedeRom is my favourite one for gaming at this point. Plus the dev has made some great improvements with the 1.50 version that was just released! I believe some previous issues with hardware acceleration were resolved as well.

Gaming on the GNex

does anyone lag when playing games on the gnex? it is very choppy when playing 3d games like running fred or dungeon defenders.
im currently on stock, unrooted and am wondering if installing custom roms will improve the frame rates?
I have aokp m4 installed with Franco's latest r98 kernel and I have no lag in any game... and I play the same ones u listed plus shadow run modern combat 3 and back stab
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
Modern combat 3 is very smooth, but the multitouch bug kills the gameplay
Can't speak for stock, I was only stock for 20 minutes. But I haven't experienced any lag in any games on the ROMs I've run. Games include: Shadow Gun, Flick Golf, and Asphalt 6 HD.

can u try running fred and dungeon defenders?
they are my favourite games but the lag is quite frequent on both games, especially dungeon defenders...
I tried Running Fred and it indeed shutters 2 or 3 times per seconds. What is strange it that it seems to do it for several frames.
I'd guess the game has a bad rendering pipeline.
Just tried Running Fred, no lag. CM9 currently with stock CM9 kernel, GSM phone.

thanks..i guess i have to root and install aokp + franco kernel. any ideas what is the best and easiest way to root the phone (im currently looking at the GNex Toolkit)?

If you're not familiar with fast boot and/or adb, that's the safest bet. I'd encourage you to at least review the fast boot method however.

I'm running cm9 with glados kernel, default settings. No lag for fred, and the only lag in dungeon defenders is when they spawn the new waves.

I play Dead Space on Android and it is as smooth as you could ever imagine. But there is occasionally a few lag and buggy, but it doesn't bother me much. Also, multitouch is a breeze on that game too. It's rooted, stock ROM
kind of sucks that you have to root and flash a rom in order to play certain games lag free
I'm rooted but on stock...i'll give the games a try and let you know from my end. It's a better comparison since I'm on stock too.
The other posters who have custom kernels and roms are obviously going to have different results.
I'm on stock too and no lag at all for Super Monkey Ball Sakura and The Sims FreePlay.

Aw, I thought he's asking about gaming in general on GNex.
It's probably a better idea to email the app developers than asking here.

Ya that's what I was thinking too....could just be they aren't optimized for ICS yet.

who knows if you have to; there's obviously a selection bias here in that most of us already have custom roms/kernels installed.
Awaiting your stock results.

Just tried out running fred...definitely not "very choppy" for me. I am getting slight stutters usually when one of those "checkpoint reach" pop ups come the framerate will stutter a bit and the sound will as well. Nothing seriously bad, I've run into certain parts of Shadowgun that will have similar behavoir.
Not 100% but doesn't make the game unplayable for me. I'd suggest check to see if you have any background processes that are slowing things down for you. Maybe a bad app somewhere is ruining your 3d gaming experience. Also, game might not be fully optimized for us yet so might be a good idea to get in touch with the developer and let him know.
I won't be able to check dungeon defenders second wave today because my internet and 3g coverage is spotty right now at my hotel. And the extra content will take forever to download.
Hope this post helps a bit.
Ok so after about a month of running unrooted stock I have just installed aokp + Franco kernel and this seems to have a positive impact on the gaming performance. Running Fred runs quite a lot smoother now. But I haven't tried dungeon defenders yet. Will probably post results again when I have the time, but still its enlightening to know and let the community know that the custom roms and kernels not only benefits in synthetic benchmarks like quadrant but also in real-world application performance.

Temple run finally

had a look and theres no similar thread.
temple run finally released on google play. i couldnt find it at 1st but did a google search and it gave a play store link.
quite good on GS2 feels a bit more hands on compared to iphone/ipod touch as our far more superior screen as it handles and displays the game so well, getting used to it on a bigger screen, smooth and responsive, happy days its here for android
Tapped GS2
works well on Hydrog3n ICS. no problems with responsiveness and/or extra presure to the screen. and it's as smooth as it gets. strange at first, but after few runs becomes quite addictive.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.imangi.templerun
Awesome game! Being waiting for this since a long time
Things like this make my sleep hours shorter and shorter
Thanks for the heads up
ok so im officially addicted and just noticed its battery hungry lol.
Tapped GS2
and so on?
google play force close when trying to install
Finally! the darn thing is out!
Just tested it on my phone - it is excellent!
Currently running GalnetMIUI ICS.
Wow. This game is addictive and runs great on my Galaxy S2 GT-9100 Stock ICS 4.0.3. Although its battery hungry, but which game isn't?
Runs silky smooth. No crashes so far. No Lag.
Didn't even know about this game, until this thread. Thanks!
Isn't this just like Running Fred?
Running Fred is for high end devices only like our sgs2. Temple run supports mid range(galaxy ace for example at full speed) and some entry level devices, and is a bit easier than running fred. Running fred is just straight while temple run has turns.
Finally this is out!! been waiting for this ever since i got my new phone
just got the SGS2 and rooted with ICS 4.0.3
and temple run came out 3 days later!!

Great game but pity about all the crashes it's making my phone have. I'm on CyanogenMod 9 and whilst at first, everything was running smoothly, it often just freezes whilst in the middle of a game.
Also, it drains battery really fast. That being said, this is still version 1.0, so hopefully they'll fix up these things as it's annoying losing all your progress every time it crashes.
cm9 + temple run
i was running cm9 and also lost my data multiple times and the game kept freezing, im now on a stipped back stock lp7 and it runs perfect for me
Yeah, ge crashes in cm9 but runs prefectly on a stock samsung ROM.

GS3 frame rate and lag problems with heavy games

So I have had my gs3 I747 for a week now, I previously owned a galaxy s 2 I777. and I am finding that whenever I run a game like nova 3 or asphalt 7 or any other hi Rendering games I have really bad frame rate problems. I thought for sure that the adreno 225 whould at least run those games so I am switching to a I 9300. Has anyone else had these problems.

Im on CM10...
The problems with games are
Asphalt 7 goes slow it isnt smooth it's runs faster on my old ipod touch 4g.. so fail
Real Racing 2 have problems on graphics cut-cars lag slow...
GTA III it's a bit slow just a little bit it stutters some times but it's very good
the only game that works perfect it's shadowgun 0 lag smooth perfect
Riptide also on maximum graphics it's just perfect too so I dont understand why gameloft games have those problems.

Ditto that. Shadowgun & Riptide are smooth as butter here too, on CM10, but Nova3 chugs.
I tried giving KToon's 2.1GHz overclocked kernel a try just for kicks, but no change.
Anyone still on Touchwiz have a problem with Nova3 (or other gameloft game) lag?
I think those games just need an update for better integration..

Not really, unless you are referring to the apps being updated to "play nice" with JB, in which case we probably shouldn't hold our collective breath. That will be a while.
Asphalt7 runs flawlessly on stock ROM but is hit-or-miss with other TW-based ROMs I've run, and is simply a stutering, hacked up mess on CM10-based ROMs I've tried.
I'm still trying to figure out what the deal is here myself.
-Ryan
All I know is nova 3 ran smooth as silk on my i9100, and choppy and crappy on my i747. Stock, TW, cm10, doesn't matter. Runs like absolute poo when the action gets busy.

And the flipside to that coin is that some games ran like crap on ICS Touchwhiz (Restaurant Story, and some others I'm forgetting), but run like butter on CM10.
Resurrected from the grave.
Sorry XDA Mods stupid I know to bring up such an old thread but seems to me that this problem still exists regardless of how bad ass phones get.
I have a T-Mobile GNote 2 and the GS3 both run games horribly with anything based off of AOSP. CM10, 10.1, 10.1.0 Rc1, AOKP, PA, etc...I am still trying to find answer to this, it is litterally Night and Day difference between TWiz roms and AOSP when comes to FPS in games.
Thanks,
Sam

what kernel were you using on each of these? your signature says you're using phablet mode. i'm having a hard time moving past that.
Lol I just call the note 2 a phablet cause that's what it is to me. Phone plus tablet. Phablet.
Now on topic. I've tried several kernels including stock ones on both devices.

Best rom for now?

Hi i want to know what is the best rom for now? Because i want to change my rom i cant decide which one is good.
Sent from my R800i using xda premium
There's not a lot of active rom right now. So kinda hard to giv u some suggestion.
Kindly Hit Thanks Button if i've help u in anyway.
I've used a LOT of the XP roms and first let me say this: there is no truly "best" rom, it all boils down largely to a matter of preference.
I'm currently running TrueAncestor 1.6 and I really like it, but I do miss certain things about ICS. The thing with ICS that's worth understanding is there is no truly stable or complete ICS rom for the Xperia Play. Every ICS rom has bugs or missing features. Some are worse than others. MANY ICS roms drop support for the touchpads in major games (EA Games, Gameloft Games, Rockstar Games) due to a colossal screwup on Sony's part. You can sort of regain the touchpad functionality using things like USB BT Joystick 6 or GameKeyboard, but those are hacks and they eat system resources.
Speaking of resources, ICS roms are also much more system intensive. Your phone will run slower, games will run less well, and your overall performance will be less snappy than GB roms. It's not *terrible* for sure, but Overclock is practically necessary for ICS roms to help make up for that performance loss. The XP's hardware is dated (it was dated when it launched, technically) and it's starting to show. The paltry amount of RAM and single core processor really hurt it's ability to run ICS and still kick ass at games.
Overall though, as far as ICS roms go I'd recommend AOKP, though the dev has gone dark and not updated it in a while. It was pretty good and had a lot of nice features. I hear CM9 is also nice, and it continues to get active support and development, and will eventually be superceded by CM10. Even then though, I still ran into moderate bugs on both of them - AOKP had a persistent problem where the WIFI would stop working due to a bug in the Settings dialog, so turning on/off your Wifi could cause it to stop working altogether, and the only fix was a reflash. It was a major pain in the ass. Other ICS roms will just randomly crash or reboot, or programs won't work or will crash that should otherwise work in ICS. Overall, be prepared for instability and don't expect 100% from your phone with virtually any ICS rom installed. Blame Sony for only releasing a beta of ICS and then dropping support.
There are other good ICS roms, such as ICS++, Ice Cream Sony, and KA, but some or all of those might have lost dev support (it's been a while since I checked) and none of them really did much in terms of feature changes/support, so they've stagnated compared to more active roms.
Honestly, I realize now that there wasn't a ton in ICS that I needed, and having switched back to GB last week I'm very happy I did - performance is better, battery life is tolerable (slightly worse than AOKP was), and games run great, plus I have full touchpad support again. It looked nice, but it didn't really add anything, and the bugs and missing features finally pushed me away from it after almost a year of running it (I've been running ICS since the first ICS ports hit the XP).
As for GB roms - TrueAncestor is good. I was running JokaWild for a bit, and it was ok, but it didn't blow me away, TA's theme is more preferrable to me. I'm running DoomKernel v14 which seems ok - it's also a bit dated though and Doom could probably do some updates to improve it a bit more if he had the time, but I'm sure he's quite busy.
I hope this helps - and good luck.
Also, if you aren't Fastboot enabled, get that done - it's worth the money and you'll need it in the hunt for the best rom, otherwise your selection will be very limited.
I have been using ICS roms and they are my favourite, there is a developer called secho I use many of his ports along with the kernel he recommends my favourite so far
True ancestor with my bloatware remover is my choice

[Q] Any game oriented Rom for the Defy?

Hello guys!
So, not long ago I started "modding" my Defy. Things were not that new to me, since I used to "mod" my Xperia Mini Pro).
The main point is, Xperia Mini Pro had a Game oriented Rom named Gingergames, so my question is, if is there anything similar to that for the Defy!
I took a few searches but could not find any so far.
For the record, I tried Quarx 4.2.2 rom, but it doesn't do good at games even though its looks are fantastic!
Thanks a lot!

This is actually true, but I was hoping for a rom with especifical game optimization.
Well, after looking the internet up and reading a lot, I came to the conclusion that White Rabbit Next Gen ROM would have a good performance on gaming since it was deemed as very light, fast and reliable and the final fact is that my Defy is running all 3D games I have tried so far without barely any lags or slowdowns. I have tried Asphalt 7 and Contract Killer 2, and both run just smooth.
So, in case anyone else is wondering, I am not sure if White Rabbit Next Gen is the BEST Rom for gaming, but I can assure it is a pretty good one!
Well, I'm on Quarx's cm10 20130326 ROM and gaming is buttery smooth. I have been playing FIFA 12 and Need For Speed Most Wanted with no lags. I still wanna try GTA III and see if passes the test. However, I had to over clock. Here are my settings
300/16
600/28
900/42
1250/58
