[Q] Data network issue - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Hi there;
I have recently owned a t989 Galaxy s2. Everything is OK except one thing that is data network. In my country(Turkey), there is no 4g network infrastructure yet so 3g is used currently. When I get the edge signal(it is on the status bar) it works as intended but when it turns to 4g signal (4g sign on the status bar), I am having trouble trying to connect to web. In the specs, it says it supports e/3g/4g but I have never encountered a 3g signal(3g sign on the status bar).
Is it obviously a radio related issue or something bad lying behind the ROM?
Note : Curently sitting near the PC and it is 4g that I see on the status bar and I am unable to establish a connection :S
Currently used Rom/Radio : Bullet v6 Android 4.0.4 / default radio comes with it(tried others as well)
Thanks in advance

Our phone does not have true 4g capabilities. it does have 3.5g. So if you say your area has 3g... then technically it should be able to use "4g".
I have yet to encounter the 3g signal symbol on my phone so i can't help you there... didn't even know we had that symbol lol.
Having "4g" symbol does not necessarily means you have fast data speed. It really depends on your area. My phone would say 4g but in reality.. it has no data or very slow data transfer speed. so don't trust that symbol. You should also check if your AREA supports the 3g network yet.

What does the H stand for on the network?

I've seen E for EDGE, 3G and at home I always have H, but next to T-Mobile it says 3G. What does the H stand for/represents?
hsdpa, its the fastest out of the lot
wiki
That explains why when I'm home and on the net it's just as fast as if I was connected to WIFI. I don't even connect to my WIFI at home anymore because H is pretty fast.
Thanks for the reply.
at least yours shows those icons. mine doesn't. I only know what i'm connected to when i actually connect & it shows in the signal bars. & i disabled showing 3G next to tmobile because that was just annoying.
haven't encountered the H here in phoenix either.

I believe that the "H" will depend on the icon pack that you pick. I'm trying to recall if I saw an "H" when I had the stock T-Mobile icons or if it was just "3G" instead.

I think you're right because when I had the T-Mobile stock ROM I had no H it was just 3G. Until I got the Europe MW 6.5 ROM I saw it and now I'm on the EnergyROM.
yes i only started seeing the H after i installed the 1% battery on the stock rom.
It stands for HSDPA which in turn stands for High Speed Downlink Packet Access
My 3G is faster than your 4G
If and when you see your buddy bragging about hdmi in their HTC EVO, the H on hour phone allows you to quip back:
[bold] "My 3G is faster than your 4G" [/bold]
here's the proof:

H = HSDPA
H+ = HSPA+ (On the T-Mobile G2, which is considered 4G for T-Mobile)

3G Icon On Notification Bar

New to Android phones, (I did a search but nothing was found), I was connected to Vodafone yesterday and there has never been a 3G Icon in the notification Bar (Network Signal has the 4 full bars)
When I am at home I use a Vodafone sure signal for 3G but it does not show in the notification bar either, (obviously I am connected to 3G when at home)
My network mode is set to GSM/WCDMA auto, so have I done something wrong or can some suggest how I can have this Icon showing.
I had the same issue - called up support and had them change my SIM card to the new one that came with the phone and since then I now get up to H depending if I'm in a decent area of Liverpool...

Thanks for the reply, this was a new sim card supplied with the phone I moved from T-Mobile to Vodafone so I could use the SureSignal to get rid of the crappy signal in the house.
Just solved the problem, if you switch off Wi-Fi then go into "settings/Mobile network connect to the internet it appears on the notification bar"
I thought you'd have it on already - glad you're sorted though!
I have only seen 'H' in my toolbar and none of the other notification (3G etc) mentioned in the manual there. Normal? Or do I just have a good connection?

The H means you have the HSDPA connection which is quicker than standard 3G. 3.5G if you will
ive also never seen a 3g icon, had the H and G one before
I use to get a 'H' on my kaiser
but on on my desire on Orange. I get a '3G+' symbol now. is this the same as 'H'?

Guys, remember that Android works differently from WIndows Mobile.
On WIndows mobile, you had the G, E, 3G or H all the time showing what signal you had. Android does not do that.
The 3G/H icon only appears when connected to the internet. the rest of the time it just shows signal bars.
And yeah, if wifi is on it will disconnect from the internet and that icon will disappear. cos after all, as long as you have signal when just using voice and text, it doesn't really matter whether it's 3G or not.
And Yes, 3G+ is the same as H. 3G+ is Orange's stupid marketing speak for HSDPA.
I have constant 'G' which changes to 3G/H when in areas that allow it...phone works fine so no issues since changing my SIM card
I am also experiencing this problem and to clarify it:
Sometimes (i think it has something to do with using camera) the animation stops working (the arrows stays shadow even if i am downloading) or the 3h/h icon disappears completely (but i am still connected to mobile data).
Disconnecting and reconnecting mobile data (e.g. swithing to wifi and back, rebooting phone or turning airplane on and off) solves this problem and the animated 3g/h icon (arrows are white when downloading and shadow when connection idle) is back.
Does anyone know how to fix this problem permanently?
I have had no such a bug on my Milestone

Is there any way to disable automatic switching between UMTS and HSDPA?

In my apartment my G2 constantly switches back and forth between UMTS (3G) and HSDPA (H). Is there any way to stop this? Both look like they have the same number of bars, but it seems like UMTS is way slower. I also should be in a 4G market, so is there a way to tell if I'm on HSPA+ or not?
I've honestly never even seen the 3g icon on my g2. whenever im in kent, when it drops it drops from h, to E

I don't think the stock G2 ROM has a specific icon for 3G, if that's what your'e on. It shows H for 3G/HSPA/HSPA+.
I think the original poster is on Cyanogen, where it does show the type of connection a bit more accurately.
I'd also be interested in trying to force an HSPA connection. I don't think Bell has UMTS data so if I'm labeled as on 3G I can make calls and texts but have to wait for it to switch to H when I start using data.
It's a feature of cyanogenmod that it switches to 3G when heavy data is not required and switches to H+ when you need a faster data connection
That is of course if your running CM on your phone...

It's not a "feature" of CyanogenMod. This also happens on the stock ROM but we do not see the H icon, only the 3G one. Cyanogen himself explained this a while back.

You mean stock sees only the H icon, not the 3G one XD
Also note that if you're not actively using data, it'll show the 3G symbol (on Cyanogen or Sense ROMs) - as soon as you start a connection, it'll switch to an H. This isn't necessarily because the phone is switching between a 3G and HSPA signal, but rather because 3G is also used to carry voice - so if the phone isn't using HSPA for data, it obviously doesn't need to show it.
Thanks for all of the information, guys!

3g signal issue

So here is my grudge as of now with the gnex. When I go from roaming to 3g or airplane to 3g, it takes an unbelievably long time to actually GET the 3g signal. It will show me that I have 3 or 4 bars of service but does not show me the little 3g icon. I am currently running Sourcery 3.2 as my rom and have my mobile network set to CDMA only. Is this a common issue or do I have a possible shotty gnex?

Same location, issue when on 4G, but none on LTE?

When my T-Mobile Note 3 is connected to LTE, I have very stable connection, regardless of the speed.
But when it switched to 4G, there is zero our unstable connection, even when I have full bars.
I have the default APN. Anything i need to change? Tested throughout Nevada and California.
Monitoring this closely, the connection is lost or unstable as soon as it switched to 4G from LTE OR when there's is no connection.
Example:
1. On LTE, good internet connection, full bar
2. Auto switch to 4G. Still full bar. No internet or unstable
Example:
1. Coming out from subway, had zero bar before
2. Connected to 4G, no data
3. Connected to LTE. Have data
