[REF] List of apps safe to disable - HTC One X

Since I have started to disable some applications, I have noticed a significant improvement regarding battery life (+45min screen on time). But I have also experienced that disabling certain applications may cause system error, or even increase battery drain.
I was wondering if someone had an exhaustive list of apps that are safe to disable?
So far I have disabled those with success:
- 7digital
- car
- face unlock
- facebook
- facebook for htc sense
- facebookapiengine
- flickr
- flickrapiengine

Disabled applications that I experienced to crash phone upon restart:
- htc weather sync provider
Disabled applications that I experienced to increase battery drain (subjectively - I might be wrong):
- dropbox
- dropbox for htc sense
- htc sense input
Has anyone further apps to suggest?

I've disabled pretty much everything except HTC sense and Google maps when I have disable google maps everything starts to act weird and freeze and stuff so I left that one alone I use titanium backup, I have also disabled some system stuff like NFC and widgets and languages that I never use and a lot of other stuff.
Was gonna make a list too but didn't have time

If you do find the time to selectively complete the list with your findings, please do. I would update the first post accordingly.

Excellent post, thanks ...
I also disabled lot of appz from first list.
Everything is OK til now. I just noticed that flickr still appear on task manager even if disabled. I tried force kill but it returns back later ...
It looks like it is not completely disabled ...

Yeah, I have also noticed this. Pdf viewer does the same. I wonder if there are further underlying services that need to be disabled in order for them to be truly gone.

Yes, i had the same idea, something like a "hard coded" use of these apps ...
It is also a very good way to disable all specific appz from branded phones
I disabled all SFR appz and they never get back and even disappear from appz menu or home page.

Ok yeah sure no problem.
I might have time to do it tonight.
Cheers

great post and great reference. but for more apps to find out which are safe to disable just have a look at the rom cleaner thread in development. Patricss has a whole list of apps that he removes with his rom cleaner so maybe you can have a look there as well and add a few more if there are any missing.
here you go :http://www.androidrevolution.nl/Patrics83/ROM Cleaner and Addons/OneX/ROMCleaner/ROMCleaner_user.txt

Some more crapware
A few more to add to your list:
- Gmail (I use Sense Mail app)
- HTCSkydrive_GLRPlugin (F*ck Microsoft)
- SkyDrive for HTC Sense (Fu*k Microsoft)
- Trimit (useless)
- TripWidget (beyond useless)
- Trends Widget (safe to remove even if you use twitter)
- Tell HTC (I ain't telling them nothing)
- Transfer (You will never use it except maybe once when the phone is new)
- Show Me (crap)
- Show Me Widget (more crap)
- Ringtone Trimmer (WTF)
- HTC Hub (garbage)
- HTC Hub Widget (Why God WHY?)
- Google Search (I never used that)

Haha hold your horses pony, I've been uploading and accidently pressed the wrong button before completion.

so what the point of freezing these apps, are they really all running and using up resources? eg Trends... yes it a widget you can put onto a homescreen, but if i dont is it zapping my memory/cpu.
also whats TAlKBack?

and yes if you freeze or disable apps it clears a bit more of the memory ram and makes the phone a bit faster

Freezing unneeded apps improves a lot battery life. Many of those unwanted/unneeded applications run randomly in background using cpu/battery etc.
From my experience, I have seen an increase of 45min screen on time after freezing the list provided in first post, all other things remaining equal.

HtcBeatsNotify
I disable HtcBeatsNotify because the notification icon would bother me even if I did use the beats profile. However I don't and the icon still persists therefore I disable it.
Note this only disables the icon in the notification area, the profile can still be chosen within the music application.

You add 'screen timeout' to list of apps not recommended to disable. Trying to restart your phone results in a boot loop, as I found out yesterday :/

Sent from my G2
Grooveshark: this is by far my favorite app, it allows me to upload all of my music files to their servers, and stream them on my G2 over 3g/HSPA/WiFi. I don't have to use my sd card for mp3's at all. The audio quality is just as good over streaming. I can also search other user's collections and stream those too. The app is very well constructed, with pull down menus, album art, and many other features I haven't even used yet. Costs $3/month and worth every penny.
AOR (Android Online Radio): pulls internet radio stations from all over the world. Just like Ootunes on iOS and WunderRadio on WinMo. But for Android it's free!
Zedge: wallpaper and ringtones app. Free, worth more. I have my phone setup to use R2D2's sounds for ringtone, and Chewbacca's cry for text notifications. Very cool.
Angry Birds Lite: enough said, fun and maddening game. Free
Raging Thunder 2: great racer for the G2, play it daily. $5.99? I think, don't remember.
Fruit Ninja: very fun, but very difficult game. I am lucky to last 90 seconds. But good for a quick game fix. $.99
Beautiful Widgets: customize your desktop with clocks and weather widgets. Lots of different styles, easy to adapt to whatever wallpaper you use. $2.99? Don't remember what it cost.
- ConnectBot - for all your remote *nix administration needs.
- Remote Desktop (by xtralogic) - my favorite RDC app for windows administration.
- Wikimind lite - a wiki formatted notes application. Useful for jotting stuff down.
- Powerstrip - for quick access to a few widgets without having to leave whatever application you are currently in.
- Newsrob - my favored RSS feed reader.
- Aldiko - an eReader.
- Angry Birds - time waster #1
- Robo Defense - time waster #2
- Barcode Scanner - QR codes for applications and general barcode scanning
- Shop Savvy - price comparison app.
LauncherPro - the best application on Android, period. Stop whatever you are doing and download it right now.
Shazam - That song that you hearing but don't know the name of, Shazam it
Power Control Plus - Allows you to add additional features that the normal Power Control widget doesn't offer such as Edge/HSPA toggle, Orientation toggle, and Flashlight toggle
Coupons - Never hurts to save a little money, you will find TONs of coupons and specials using this app
EasyTetherPro - Until the G2 is rooted this is a good application for transferring your HSPA+ speeds via USB
Music Downloader Pro - It downloads music...and its Pro at it
PhonemyPC - Allows you to connect to a PC very easily. No firewalls, no specific versions of windows, and no port forwarding. Just create a username and pass on your phone and do the same on the computer and your good to go.
Doubletwist - A music player that looks alot better than the stock version
Anything that ends in soid - Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Gameboy, Sega Genesis, even Playstation. You have a physical keyboard, take advantage of it.
XDA - Take a guess
This thread was really gaining speed, and good information in the general section. Here in the "theme and apps" sections it's going to die. Much like mine and a second similar one after that.
It was very informative while it lasted.
Apps:
AlarmDroid - Awesome Alarm Clock
APKtor - Public Market
Appbrain App Market
Dialerone - Alternative Dialer
EasyMoney Lite - checkbook app
File Manager
Gtasks - todo lists that syncs with Google Tasks
Handcent SMS - alternative texting app
Tasker - automation app like locale but much more features.
Zeam Launcher - Silly fast launcher
Widgets:
Brightness Level
Gauge Battery
tajm - clock widget

Mobile Signal Widget
Not in any particular order...
Applanet - black market
Handcent - good for my particular texting needs
TeslaLED - Dear God that SOB is bright!!
Mobile Manager - nice app to get into the SD card and other things
DropBox Mobile - lets me access documents across multiple devices
Documents2Go - open and edit MS Office documents
EasyTether - USB tether
Mixzing - music player
Dolphin Browser - I like the tabs
RoadSync - exchange email sync
Those are the ones I use most often. The list could go on and on though... If I had root access I would add Barnacle WiFi to it which is a great hotspot creator, but since I can't use that app anymore, it doesn't make the list.
1. Official XBMC Remote - Beautiful if you have XBMC running on a PC or anything else for that matter

[Q] What would you like?

Hey guys ,
I am making my first ever ROM and would like to cater to what everybody would like most. I've extracted the rom.zip from the latest WWE RUU, rooted it (by putting the SU.apk and the binary into the ROM) and would like to release it as a completely stock option but still rooted for those people who would like to enjoy Sense with nothing added or removed. (Of course people can change stuff themselves by adding and removing apps, etc.) But yesterday I also thought of another option - making the ROM extremely fast and leaving it with the bare minimum - Calendar, Play Store, Camera, Dialer, Settings, HTC People etc. So I would like to get on to my original question - which would you like to see? Vote in the poll, or if your answer is "other" post your request there.
And if you would like me not to release it as there are too many Sense-based ROMs cluttering up the Android Development section, vote that option and I 'll keep it to myself
I would like a bare bones stock rom, Basically remove as much as you can without causing my app choices to break. and overclock 15%
also if possible make it so when I touch the all apps button, I would like a pop up menu with settings and a button for app screen, also can you code it so I can have pages of apps scroll sideways

Well you can make both and put them on the same thread. Make a lite and a full versions of the same ROM and let people choose.
You can also change the kernel to an overclockable (is that a word ?) Kernel.
Sent from my still alive, ICS capable HTC Wildfire.
OK, I'll make two versions, although I can't make a horizontal app drawer as I'm quite new at making ROMs , but that doesn't mean it can't come in a later update!
Sent from my Wildfire using Tapatalk 2
Actually i would prefer as light as possible rooted ROM..even in cm7 i found couple apps i have never used and could be deleted..
i was stuck on froyo after ota (i didnt know anything about android, even xda ) and since revolutionary/alpharev is available i am on cm7 (now on unofficial cm9) and i was thinking about seeing froyo again, so this is probably my no1 for the moment
little ot, sorry for that, i cant post in dev section, so at first thanks for your and others work on cm9
after flashing cm9 build from 04-15 i found that in settings->about phone the android version says 4.0.3 so i am a bit confused
and i dont know if it was mentioned, but Apex launcher is working also good for me and i found it more customizable than Nova which is in recommended in op...

I find AirDroid useless when Google gives you Google Voice.

AirDroid can be used for so much more than typing stuff...
Adding music, deleting music.
Removing apps, adding apps.
Its really easy compared to hooking up a USB cord and going from there.
Photoshop Touch is incompatible, you need to sideload it. But do agree with a lot of them. Lightflow is a definite must, morequicklypanel is a good one but does take up a notification, and also for me Battery Widget Reborn is a quality app. great battery statistics

[App][JB + ]ApolloMod v1.5 - Modified Apollo Music player (updated 3/15/14)

Description:
ApolloMod is an open source music player based on CyanogenMod's Apollo Music Player and released under the same Apache License. It has many changes to the layout and basic functionality as well as a growing list of new features.
Major Changes:
- Reworked ALOT of the UI, some big changes & some small(check the screenshots below)
- Now playing screen is now a panel that slides up from the bottom actionbar
- Drag/Drop sortable playlist and now playing queue(with swipe to remove)
- Swipe left/right to change song on now playing view
- Built in simple Eq when no external Eq is available
- Prev button actually works when in shuffle mode
- 'Shuffle All' action now creates an actual shuffled playlist of all songs(previously would create an ordered playlist with shuffle mode enabled)
- Fetches album art from files before fetching from the web
- Ability to edit album, artist, playlist & genre images(long press images on their respective views)
- Tab visibility controls(only show the tabs you wish)
- Grabs highest quality images available from the web
- Ability to choose widget style (holo dark or holo light)
- Extended notifications
- Audio visualizations on now playing screen(experimental at this point)
NOTE: You will have to hit 'play' or another button on the widget to get it to change themes after altering settings, I am working on getting the widgets to update themselves after a setting has changed.

IF YOU USE MY WORK IN YOUR ROM I WOULD APPRECIATE AT LEAST A THANKS
.
Good stuff as always, thanks for sharing
Awesome! Cant wait to try this!
This is working great on my GS3! Nice work BigSplit. :good:
I still have some new features in the works, just need to make sure everything I changed is functioning in this version since the changes in it are the base for whats coming. So if you find any bugs let me know.
I already know about the bug in some of the context menus.
The only issue I've come across is when I hit menu/equalizer the app FCs. Is that the bug you were referring to? So far everything else I've used has been perfect.
No, that's another bug I didn't know about. I'm on CM11 so dsp always comes up for me when hitting it.
I'm talking about the context menus of the artist, album, playlist and genre views. The context menu for list items are showing the context menus for editing the images of said artist, album, playlist or genre.

Does that ROM have an eq app in it?
EDIT: I just set it up like the newer Apollo now. If it can't detect an Eq app then it won't show the menu item
Well it does but I uninstalled it along with the stock music player in favor of using the Sony Walkman. I'll reinstall it and let you know what happens
Edit: That was the issue. Its perfect now.

Well instead of hiding the Eq menu item when no EQ app is available I now added this. It is only available when there is no external app installed.

Wicked. Great stuff.
This is the best Music player I've ever used on my phone but there are some issues that I always face with this and also with the original Apollo Music player...
1. The app always force closes and restarts (automatically) after playing a couple of songs.. Sometimes it'll get "stuck" while playing a music file and it will either stutter and skip that song OR "freeze my phone" for a couple of seconds and then it shows a F.C message
2. The app freezes and force closes if I keep skipping songs..
But still, I like using this app because I really like it :good:

This is a rad music player. However, most of the album artwork looks very low quality. I checked on my PC if the artwork was in low quality but, they look completely fine and crisp.

Can you tell me which section of the app you are talking about? I ask because I store and use two different size images for all the images displayed( a thumbnail and fullsize image). I create a thumbnail for all of the smaller views such as the main tabbed layout. I do this purposely to reduce the memory.
Edit: If you are talking about the 'Now Playing' screen I realize I was using the thumbnail instead of the fullsize image for that screen.

Should have been more specific, oops. But yes, I'm talking about the Now Playing Screen.
Should have a new version up tonight with bugfixes, more layout changes and new features
OP updated, check the changelog section for changes.

(On version 1.4) I can't replicate those issues now (for some reason) but I'll share it if I ever encounter it again..
(On version 1.5) For some reason, the app force closes if I tap on any music to play it (from the app and also from Widget).. Here's the log file, please take a look at it

[INFO] Fire OS App List / Debloat / Factory Images

PART 2 of 2 - SYSTEM OPTIMIZATION, TWEAKS, RECOVERY, FACTORY IMAGES, TIPS
Picture for stock lock screen:
./sdcard0/lock/user-photo/user_photo.jpg
./sdcard0/lock/user-photo/user_photo_thumbnail.jpg
Replaced the original JPGs with a black 1x1 px JPG.
Change / Replace Lock Screen:
I used "Next Lock Screen" (NLS) as a replacement, not my favorite but it's a suitable example.
After installation, make sure to give notification access to the new lock screen. In the NLS settings, choose 'compact' or 'hide' as status bar mode. Doing this will prevent problems showing the quick access panel from NLS.

Stock Ringtones, Alarms, Notifications, UI Sounds, Boot Animation:
./system/media/audio
I deleted most of the files in the subfolders, since I don't need / like them.
./system/media/fremedia
Contains 4 videos (01s.mp4, 02s.mp4, 03s.mp4, 04s.mp4). 20 MB of useless data = deleted.
They are used for the Fire "tutorial" that you can choose to watch when you first boot up a "factory fresh" phone.
./system/media
boot.wav & bootanimation.zip = default boot logo & audio, deleted, who cares.
Textures (for the atrocious "dynamic perspective"):
./system/euclid/vbls/home_icons/...
and folders like "home_icons-de", "home_icons-es", etc. depending on your OS version
The textures folder in the above mentioned folder(s) can be removed if you don't use "dynamic perspective".
Text to Speech:
./system/tts/ivona
One folder for each language, e. g. "deu.deu.marlene_1418201400000", "eng.usa.nina_1418201400000".
The two folders above have over 340 MB(!) of data. Folders can be deleted if you don't use TTS.
./system/tts/lang_pico
The bin files inside this folder can also be deleted if you don't need TTS.
Factory Data Reset Whitelist - "protects" the following folders & files:
/data/app
/data/dalvik-cache
/data/resource-cache
/data/app-res
/data/app-lib
/data/system/packages.list
/data/system/packages.xml
/data/media/0/Android/data/com.amazon.kindle/files/dictionaries
/data/securedStorageLocation/com.amazon.providers.contentsupport/tts/ivona
/data/system/uiderrors.txt
/data/system/dropbox
Just to show you which parts exactly get spared when FR is executed.
Delete Fonts:
./system/sqfs/container.sqfs
Stored in a compressed sqfs container (read only), because including 160 Fonts was a good idea. -.-
The fonts folder weighs over 180 MB, compressed into a container it's still 109 MB.
Replacing the XMLs ➜ clicked on settings ➜ FC, third party apps still work (e.g. root explorer) ➜
Replacing the container.sqfs ➜ clicked on settings ➜ everything ok ➜ restart phone ➜ everything ok ➜ power off phone ➜ boot up phone ➜ stuck in boot ➜ black screen ➜
Copied the fonts from the container to a temp directory ➜ deleted the container.sqfs file ➜ created a real folder namend "fonts" in ./system ➜ moved the fonts back into the real fonts folder ➜ survives restart & complete power off
I deleted the CN and JP fonts, font configuration list:

Amazon DCP Menu / OTA Dashboard:
I will just link the post from rbeavers since it explains it perfectly.
Final Steps:
Used SD Maid Pro to clean up unused Libs, obsolete & orphaned files (e. g. Epson & Canon Printer Libs, etc.) won another ~ 50 MB of system space.
I made an exception for:
./data/data/vitals.db
./data/data/vitals.db-wal
You can delete them when SD Maid offers to, but they will be generated again by the system.
Using Greenify depends on the selection of your apps, some people will profit more from using it than others.
Stock Apps (pre-installed) / Updated Apps:
3 archives. One with all system apps, the other with all priv-apps and the third with all updated apps as of 2015-06-21.

Recovery / Sideload Factory Images:
If your OS is messed up "beyond repair", try re-installing it.
All images are multi language (English, Spanish, French, Italian, German, regarding the UI & keyboard, some TTS languages need to be downloaded if the user wants to have proper support), so you could use the US version for an EU user / phone.
You might run into problems using certain WiFi channels (e. g. CH 13) because of the WiFi country codes. Advanced users know how to handle / fix that, ofc. The US image is the so called "GSM unlocked" version, suitable for most users.
1.a Download the *.bin file (FireOS 4.6.1):
——————————————————
US - Amazon Server DDL
US - Mega.nz Mirror
——————————————————
UK - Amazon Server DDL
UK - Mega.nz Mirror
——————————————————
GER - Amazon Server DDL
GER - Mega.nz Mirror
1.b or download the *.bin file (FireOS 4.6.3):
——————————————————
US - Amazon Server DDL
——————————————————
UK - Amazon Server DDL
——————————————————
GER - Amazon Server DDL
2. Connect device to PC & boot in recovery: PWR + VOL. UP (hold both buttons until recovery screen appears)
From the list, choose "Apply update from ADB"
3. adb sideload 'name_of_your_bin_file'
I recommend renaming the the downloaded file to "update.bin" so you can just type in cmd: adb sideload update.bin
4. If you have trouble getting your device recognised after entering recovery / ADB sideloading mode:
If you boot up your phone in recovery mode / ADB mode, you will need additional ADB device drivers for your Windows system.
The regular (Amazon / Kindle) USB driver that is used when you connect your phone to the PC won't work, it's simply not the same method.
That's why your phone "disappears" as soon as you (re)boot into recovery / ADB sideload mode.
Open your "device manager" (assuming, you're using Windows as your main OS) and check for your device with missing drivers.
Try this tool (& driver) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588979
You can even use (old) "Google USB drivers", I successfully tested google drivers from 2010 on Win 7 x64 with this phone in ADB mode.
If everything worked as planned, it should look like this: next to your device name, it will say "sideload"
PART 1 of 2 - APP LIST
This thread was created before ggow introduced Safestrap and custom ROMs to the Fire Phone.
No pre-installed app stores / markets. Only 'Phone', 'Messaging', 'Camera', 'Contacts', 'Settings' remain untouched.
The following list represents a highly modified configuration of the OS to my liking.
Please DON'T APPLY THESE SETTINGS BLINDLY to your device.
Tested OS versions: [ROOTED] US "GSM unlocked" 4.6.1 (461013820) & 4.6.3 (463001620)
If an Android L based version gets released, it will be a discussed in a separate thread.

Gesture Service (KinesisGestureService.apk) - For motion gestures, it's not used for the Amazon swipe gestures, however: pressing the home button to minimize an app worked better with this one remaining on the system. Amazon DP Logger (com.amazon.dp.logger.apk)

DCP Contracts Framework (DeviceClientPlatformContractsFramework.apk)
Whenever I removed one of those 3 apps, the phone was heating up after reboot, basically running unthrottled, massive battery drain by the minute, FC on most stock apps (e. g. contacts, messages, phone).
I "triple checked", wiped cache, tested them one by one, removed and restored them multiple times. I was able to reproduce the above mentioned problem every time, that's why they remain on the device (deactivated).

Great list! Here are a few questions:
How's the general performance of your device now?
My Fire phone has approximately 35-45% available ram at boot up (thanks Whatsapp, Telegram, Skype, Facebook, etc.), how about yours now?
Do you play games? Have you noticed any improvement in frame-rate/responsiveness?
Has your Battery life improved? My phone lasts about 8-12 hours on very light use (mostly instant messaging over wi-fi).
So, you disabled the Download UI... Do you still get notifications for downloads?
Totally unrelated, but I'm curious... do you think it'd be possible to modify status bar icons and the boot animation?
@ namelessxsoul
Performance is gooood. Quick responses, fluid navigation. But it should be like that, this is basically a "Galaxy S5 lite" running with a (almost) bare minimum of apps.
RAM used: 400 - 450 MB / RAM free: 1,2 GB. (Then again, I only use whatsapp. Skype is ridiculous on any platform, as we all know.)
I played "Monument Valley" & "Real Racing 3" some time ago while testing. I assume games will perform almost the same, although having less background processes & more free RAM never hurts.
2 days with "medium" usage: browsing (watching videos in browser as well), music, messaging... I can go 4 days+ if I use it strictly for communication. I used the "battery calibration" app, hold on let me finish... This app is no snake oil garbage, no "battery booster", etc. It simply lets the system generate a new batterystats file, so that the full capacity is the actual capacity. This is only useful after flashing / reinstalling OS, or if you tampered a lot with the device, hehe.
I still get a notification bar popping in from the top whenever a download is started and finished. Since I don't need the Download UI only the Download Manager, it's perfect. I manage my downloads with the browser or through repo(s).
Hm, boot animation. I checked the original file: 5 folders and the "desc.txt". If someone wants to try his luck... (I don't care at all). Btw. bootanimation is 19 MB - Amazon splurge mode activated. -.-
Status bar icons? Let's consult ze infamous hydromän. I haven't tested it myself (again, don't care... ^^)
hydromän said:
...but for status bar icons you need xStana.

Woah, that is a huuuuuuge improvement overall. I am definitely going to try this out in my own way. Thank you!
Don't like the lack of window previews on recents. Is there away to get Amazon's quick switch assigned as an app to use as a shortcut or gesture?
@ ratbags You mean the "recents" on the screenshot? That is due to the launcher used at that time, so it won't affect you ^^. (Although QuickSwitch is always active as well.)
Unfortunately, QuickSwitch can only be called by the home button. QS is part of the SystemUI, I found some files in the 'euclid' folder but it takes more than that to create a stand alone app.
You could get involved here, super posh switcher, in app purchases, wall street journal approved, knock yourself out.
I use gestures for several things including bringing up recents with a slide from the side of the screen. Good for multi tasking. Regardless of launcher on the fire phone, recents appear as in your shot. No preview, only icon on window. Anyways, thanks for the other info regarding quick switch.
I am a clean freak and love to delete everything but some of the things you have mentioned deleting will cause issues with apps showing in the drawer. After deleting DeviceBackupAndRestoreInternalSDK-release.apk you will get access to 3 apps only: Texting, Contacts and Phone. Everything else, although still installed on the phone, will disappear. The regular app switcher will stop working also.
Оne question. If I use a custom keyboard, calendar, when I install it I should rename it to the original programs name? (com.nuance.swype.input.apk)
@ mazay2 No need to rename, just install it. Multiple keyboards are supported by FireOS, select your new keyboard as standard after installation and you're done. You can deactivate your old calendar when you found a good replacement.
After resetting my phone, I deleted the problematic app and see if it would repeat the issue. It did again for me but I had another launcher installed and the defaults cleared. I pressed home and all apps are visible in home replacement app. So it is only an issue if you plan to keep the stock Fire home app.
Also Stock music app will not open after deleting everything so be ready to find a new music app if it is important to you.
Back to stock again, The settings app does not open which is a big issue for me.
Will try to pinpoint problem at later time.
tried disabling most of the apps on the list. still have several disabled and would like to disable some more, but don't feel comfortable not knowing whats what. After I had disabled most of the apps in the list my phone deregistered itself, had to re enable apps to re register my phone. don;t know which apps caused the problem, but a non registered phone does not seem to launch all built in apps.
I think with a little more refinement of the list (something we all can add to) then this list would be an appropriate post to make sticky. perhaps an edit with a dependencies list as more feedback comes in. I realize thats a lot more work on top of what you have already done, but i worry about disabling apps I use (or at least have not found an adequate replacement for yet).
for example
*if you do not use the kindle app or audible it seems logical that the bookstore, whispersync, whisperlink etc. are dependant
* conversely, if you take out the fire launcher you will find the amazon quick switch will lose some of the default quick switch buttons. other apps have links to their quick switch as well but im uncertain which
sorry, don't mean to sound all naggy. I did a lot a testing last night and didn't make notes. your work to compile this list obviously took a lot a time and I am really glad to see some mentions of apps I wanted to take out but wasn't sure if i could.
Thanks for all the info. Is there a simple way to get rid of the Amazon lock screen by removing or disabling something?
@ ratbags You can freeze / remove just the "LockScreen.apk" and leave "LockScreenPreviewer.apk", "LockScreenSettings.apk" & "LockScreenSettingsPreviewer.apk" untouched (so it's easier / faster to undo it later).
Remember that the phone can also be woken up with the home button. Don't "activate" your phone by accident because of a missing lock screen.
I guess you might guess my next question: is there any way to disable wake with home feature?
@ ratbags I assume this option is buried "deep" somewhere and sadly won't be editable with an XML file that just happens to lay around in the system partition.
Oh, and about the "lack of window previews on recents", it needs an option enabled, something like onCreatethumbnail, so that's android API related, I guess you won't see nice little thumbnails any time soon. Maybe beg a Dev. to include this into an Xposed module.
I froze lock screen but things got a little flaky and the start button starting acting strangely so I've enabled it again. You wouldn't think that disabling the lock screen would have a knock on effect but it does.

The inconsistency of this OS is driving me nuts. I had no trouble with lock screen (+ LSpreviewer & LSsettings) removed on my heavily modified system, now I'm running almost vanilla and it's a lottery. ^^
Look at the picture on the left, the first 3 entries of the menu are "behind" the header and the search field. Next try, all fine. Btw: My app drawer got messed up too but only after the first time, then it was perfectly fine.
Good thing I wrote "Only delete this if you installed an alternate lock screen" in the app list. Replacing is the way to go, or a "null lock screen". A lock screen that does nothing, just like the "null launcher" and "null live wallpaper". Maybe that would make this drama queen OS calm down.
Just to be clear: I encountered said problems when only the LockScreen.apk was removed, never had problems with custom launcher itself. 7 / 10 attempts without lock screen were successful, the others looked pretty much like the one on the pictures.
Some weird stuff this fire os. I'm trying to use it as it is to avoid the inconsistencies of an alt launcher but it's tough. Compared to my nexus that is.
