Four Galaxy Nexus devices tested. None are able to obtain a GPS Lock. - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I currently own a Galaxy Nexus and love everything about it except it seems that GPS cannot get a lock on my phone.
I thought many it was only my unit, so I tried out 3 of my other friends GN's. No luck.
It seems like the Galaxy Nexus cannot get a GPS lock in Vancouver, Canada. (My only hypothesis so far)
Google Maps can get a location lock (without GPS, but using WIFI and Mobile Network triangulation) to 20 meters.
Relying solely on GPS with Google's Mobile Triangulation off. I get the "Your location is currently unavailable" error.
First image is GPS only. Second image is using google's mobile triangulation. Third image is well what GPS Status shows me.

Out of the 4 GN's
One is locked, unrooted, and is running stock 4.0.1 on Bell Mobility, UMTS Network
Another is running AOKP 4.0.4 (Franco Kernel) on Fido, UMTS Network
Another is running Liquidsmooth v1.4 (Lean Kernel) on Wind, AWS Network
Mine is running Liquidsmooth v1.4 (Franco Kernel) on Bell Mobility, UMTS Network
I have tried setting the gps.conf file to the right settings, I have attempted to flash different basebands with no luck.
Any ideas? Maybe another Vancouverite can help me out here?
All tested outside, on a semi-cloudy day.
I will post pictures tomorrow when I'm at school as I do not want to give away my approximate home location to 20 meters using wifi.

Rural Iowa, 20 second lock, indoors. BOOM.
Sent via a butterfly wing flap generated program. As its delicate wings flap once, disturbances ripple outward, changing the flow of the eddy currents in the upper atmosphere. This causes momentary pockets of high pressure which act as lenses, deflecting cosmic rays, focusing them to strike the drive platter and flip the desired bit. That's how real programmers do it.

Which baseband are you running if I may ask? I'd like to give it a shot.

team eos 2.1.0, glados 1.34, ugcl1. im in vancouver, bc on wind mobile indoors. takes about 5s to lock.

Well in my case it gets the lock. Takes a lot of time to but eventually it does.

Gets lock in 4 seconds, indoors. (;

Thank you for your reply. I will try your config on the weekend.
Although are you SURE you have a GPS lock? Did you try disabling Wifi, and Google Location Services (triangulates mobile data)?

Out of curiosity, why do you want to rely solely on GPS? It is less accurate than being augmented by wifi and uses more battery.

The initial satellite lock with Google's loaction service switched off will take a while.
How long did you wait for the fix? Did you check with a GPS status app? You should see one or two satellites pretty quickly even without location service but the fix can take > 10min the first time.

I tried the GPS Status app. I left the phone on for approximately 5 min before I gave up hope. Are you saying that if I leave GPS Status on for 20 min it should find a few satellites and then it will work smoothly after?

I'm planning some hikes this summer. My other phones had no problem relying on GPS. Or didn't give erratic positions when triangulating mobile networks.
Also, GPS is a feature of the phone, why not have it?

It always takes me a few minutes but it finally locks, that's with location services turned on.

Seems like this phone is a hit and miss for many. Either it works, or doesn't.

If you are in the US try what is posted in the OP of THIS thread. It helped me get a fix faster.

I just attempted this tweak using the optimal settings from Canada and so far. No difference. GPS Test shows 1 satellite in view (25% of the time) and the SNR is approximately -19dB I believe.

You should check out the Note or the SIII, they have GLONASS also. The Note has excellent location lock, not extremely precise but very fast lock and stays locked. I figure the SIII will perform similarly.

Unfortunately, I do not have friends with the Galaxy Note or the S3. (Yet)

My GPS seems to do fine. Apps (including Maps) have no issues getting a pretty quick and accurate location lock. It can be a bit slow in Navigation (possibly on account of me driving down the freeway at 70mph) but it's not the end of the world.

[Q] G2 Having Hard Time Getting GPS Signal?

Is anybody else having spotty GPS signals? Sometimes my phone picks up a signal in a few seconds but others (in good Tmobile territory) I will not be able to get a signal for 5 minutes or more.
Coming from the Vibrant this is getting on my nerves. My Nexus One was perfect when it came to it's GPS but right now I'm 0/2 in new phones with great GPS reception. :[
I will say that I've only used the GPS 5 times but 3 of those times it wasn't working as it should.
Have you checked to see how well its picking up the satellites? Search the market for GPS Test and try that out. I get 9-10 giving me an accuracy of 9.8ft sitting in my room lol
mine is picking up a signal remarkably fast (compared to my g1 at least)
mine is getting great GPS, even indoors, where my vibrant wouldn't
below is screen capture i took - it's got me located outside when i'm actually inside the house, but at the very spot - and the cursor only jumped outside the house when i connected the usb cable to the phone for the screen grab -
if i move from the front of the house to the rear, it moves cursor as i move - sometimes maybe 10 ft off, but usually spot on. After my vibrant, it's frigging eery

why not take into a tmo store and compare side by side with their store unit? - put both in satellite view (makes it easier for me to determine where the GPS is locating me)
that should tell you if it's your phone or something in your area, ie interference wise
Used the navi the other night and its the best I've used. Rerouting fast and always on top of my directions like like mr google maps was following me. Not that I wouldn't be surprised if google was following me. Me being so famous and all.

The gps was working great until yesterday. Now it won't lock either inside or outdoors. I had to pull the battery to get it to reacquire a lock, and then it loses it. Between the rubbish Vibrants and now this I swear these MFs want me to go get an iphone. Any body have any suggestions on how to get this crap running again?
Update: I had turned on "force use of GPS" on Beautiful widgets friday night. After I posted this I remembered and turned that option off and rebooted. Everything works, and I got 8/8 satellites in my basement. So, hopefully this fixed my problem.

NOPE, I have the vibrant too and getting the G2 was a relief. I think I'm going to stick with HTC phone only.
My G2 gets a GPS lock in under 6 seconds, no spotty coverage for me
I have turned off wireless network location and I can still get a GPS lock in 5 sec or less. GPS on this phone is nothing short of amazing (had G1 and Cliq before).

I recently took a trip to Disneyland from Salt Lake with the g2 as my gps, pretty much every time i hit an open valley i lost gps, it reconnected within 2-3 seconds (I figured it was transitioning between satellites or something), but anyone that has travel that route knows there's a lot of open valleys... strangely, i lost gps signal in Las Vegas, and it didn't reconnect at all until i left Las Vegas city limits..

A lot.
I usually lose 3-4% over night (9h) with perfect reception. Last x-mas I was at my gf's home on the countryside with barely 1 bar of reception and ~50% no reception: Lost 30% over night. Both times connected to WiFi.
I feel your pain... though mine is not as nearly as bad as yours.
Do you have the option to connect to wifi at work? That should help if it's available (and/or allowed).

I'm not the OP, but having WIFI doesn't help/hurt my battery life at all when the phone is idle. I also have bad reception at work (and at home), but not nearly as bad as the OP. Even with my poor reception at home, I only lose about 1% an hour at night with about -90dbm of service.

Simple, but have you tried just disabling 4G while at work? I get 4G at work, but barely. This made the difference for me.
Battery life with great signal and hardly any congestion is almost comparable to wifi. During Xmas break there were hardly any people downtown Houston and I got almost 5 hours display twice with ~10% left still.

In that context, you're correct. -90dbm isn't the best of signal service but it's not equivalent to having no service period (per OP's 60% missing signal) But I'll disagree on the front that it does not help battery life if he's missing signal 60% of the time.
Case in point, I get absolutely no data reception at my mother's house. Phone itself is constantly searching for service which has been a huge battery drain; idle or not.
That 60% he's not having any signal, phone (and consequently apps that are also trying to utilize data) do contribute to a big battery drain.
Being on WiFi remedies that a bit.

Your phone is likely defective and you should exchange it.
I used to have high % of time without signal like that... then I exchanged my GN for a new one and it's got signal close 100% of the time.
Do you drop connection when trying to use data?

I tried that with my first phone... It made no difference.
The lady I talked to at verizon support was pretty open that there was a batch of bad GNs out there. Definitely no harm in trying a new radio.. but don't wait too long if it continues to perform like that.
The difference between my old and new phones are night and day. Old one would drop connection every 20 minutes (and usually more often than that). The new one hasn't dropped connection one time in over a week
Get the app called No Bars that puts your phone into airplane mode after how ever many minutes you want after the phone doesn't have signal. The app also has a setting to to automatically keep checking for a signal after how ever long you want it to. I used this on my EVO4G with Sprint but I don't think I need it any more with verizon so I don't know if it works on our phones.
It's definitely because of my office. However, I had a droid x that had better/stronger signal than my GN. I just flashed the 4.0.4 radio that came w/ Codename's latest ROM. Bars appear to be one notch higher on 3g, (0 bars to 1 bar). But the signal strength is exactly the same.
This is my first full day on 4.0.4 radios and my battery is fantastic. I was dropping 2%/hr. I seriously was wowed by how awesome its been today. Although, every once and a while, my phone does that.
Very pleased. The big drop was grooveshark steaming on 4G.

+1 for turning off 4G when you are out of range. Also I enabled the mobile data limit and forced several applications to restrict background data. For example, google+ was a major hog that was constantly using the radio. Also check applications that "check in" periodicaly, and increase their check in time. Words with Friends checks in every 5mins by default.

[Q] Unstable 5GHz

I'm having issues with my GNex on 5GHz networks. The networks drop out and are generally unstable. It is not the networks themselves that are unstable, as the signal is rock stable on nearby laptops.
The blue line is the 5GHz network. It is the only 5GHz network within range, so interference is unlikely to be the issue. This router is a WNDR4000, which is pretty much rock solid on both frequencies. The 5GHz network is on channel 48, no automatic channel setup.

Anyone know what might be the issue? Is 5Ghz working fine for others? Is my HW broken?
(I'll be pretty pissed if my HW is broken TBH. I got it back from its third service today...)
There is a hardware issue with 5GHz WiFi on the Galaxy Nexus. I can only connect to 5GHz WiFi networks if I am standing directly next to the router. There is a thread regarding this issue.
Mine is brand new and it does it.

Welcome to the Galaxy Nexus. Just pretend it never had 5ghz support, you'll be far happier for it. My 5ghz up and stopped working entirely when the phone was only a month or so old. 2.4 is still going strong, although at lower speeds then any other device connected to it. Samsung put a real joke of a wifi chip in this phone.
reading the title i thought sum1 used liquid nitrogen and overclocked our cortex A-9 to 5 Ghz dam m disappointed
My Nexus must be defective. I'm hooked to a 5Ghz network without issues.
Did you pay attention during Physics class?
Higher frequencies will not penetrate things like walls or yourself as good as lower frequencies, think 800MHz and 2.4GHz WiFi, the cell tower obviously can penetrate buildings better. Just you turning away from the router can make the bars drop a bar or 2.

Yes, I did. Did you pay attention to what I wrote? Using my laptop in the same location, I get >20MB/s speeds on 5GHz without a hitch and the signal is rock steady.
We're talking line of sight, 3-4 meters of air. Not really something that 5GHz should have trouble penetrating.

Well, actually I can. Monitoring the signal on my laptop shows a rock solid signal. Pretty much anywhere in the house actually.
So the signal in itself is good and stable. Now, I expect the reception to be somewhat worse on the GNex due to antenna limitations and space restrictions for the tranciever. However, I can still expect a signal that doesn't go completely dead for 5-20 seconds at a time while being in the same room as the router. My One X does not have these dropouts, I only experience these with the GNex.
I don't expect even half the speed or reception compared to my laptop, but I expect the signal to be somewhat stable on the GNex when there are no issues on the laptop.

Comparing the gnex to the one x is fine, but to a laptop is a big no no. Laptops have more power to the wlan card, not to mention it have more antenna than the gnex. If it works fine on the one x, then yes, the gnex have problems.
Will the next nexus have a longer screen?

The laptop is my "baseline", verifying that the signal is on and stable 100% percent of the time. The amount of power is of little importance, since we're only talking recieving, not transmitting. The signal won't be as good as the laptop due to the antennas (as I already pointed out. Did you read what I wrote?), but I should be able to compare the stability of the signal. And it's definitely not good.

GPS Issue

I am having problems with my 6506 GPS locking. I have tried three factory resets, and after contacting Sony, two software restores.
Yet I continue to get "searching for GPS" when I try to navigate either in Google Maps or Navigon.
Location services are all on.
Would a new ATT sim work? Any other help appreciated.

Download GPS test apk to check it or *#*#7378423#*#* do GPS location test
Me also - turning into a deal killer for me
I'm having a similar problem. Stock firmware (rooted, not unlocked) and GPS fixes are problematic. This morning in Chicago suburbs (i.e. no tall buildings or obstructions) the first fix took maybe 2 minutes. I then ended GPS Test, waited about a minute, started again. Time to first fix was 48 seconds, which is extremely long for a fix when that warm.
I've also been comparing to the Galaxy S2 (I777), and doing so WITHOUT a sim card meaning it's AGPS ability is very limited, and even so every single time it locks faster and had greater resulting accuracy.
The problem is consistent with the GPSTest program, also google maps (and the resulting accuracy shown). The signal level of each satellite when it does see them is almost entirely orange on the ZL, but generally yellow or green on the SG2 in the same area.
As a quick test I am standing in my office, it's got a corner view south east. I powered up the GS2 which had not been in use for 2 days, and it got a lock in 9 seconds according to GPSTest's time to first fix. No SIM card either.
Then I did the ZL in the exact same spot, and after about 4 minutes I gave up. Screen shots below; notice that 3 additional minutes have passed on the ZL and still no lock, and I started them at the same time.
I've also used the GPSTest to clear and update the AGPS data, it made no apparent difference.
So far, even with the camera's over processing, I love the phone. Everything else I've got straightened out, but this may become a deal killer, as I really do use the GPS.
Is it just me? (Well, and the OP?).

Edit PS: Just to head off one area -- I am familiar with the NTP pool issues, have tried Faster Fix, but the issue is not that -- the issue is inadequate satellite signal, it's just not receiving enough/well-enough.
is lack of response indicative that the OP and I may have hardware problems and this is not normal for this device?
I called Sony, they had me do a complete restore with PC Companion, which reloaded all the software as best I can tell; I did not root or anything after, and spent 10 minutes in a parking lot without a lock. Later in the morning I tried and got a lock in about a minute, which is still slow, so it still is flakey.
And despite three attempts at calibrating the compass, when using it (and not GPS) it's WAY off, part of the time about 30 degrees, then as you swing around through (real) sourth it jumps drastically.
It's going back today, will see whether they have another to try, but this is a deal killer for me if the GPS doesn't work. I'm hoping the relative silence is a sign that it's not a general problem (a la Captivate of years past) and so will probably try another handset if they have one.
No issues with the GPS or compass on mine (C6502). It takes about few secs (usually <5-10 secs) to lock the position. Screenshot below was taken while testing GPS indoors (locked on in 8 secs).
New Handset
Oh what a difference a new handset made.
Kudo's to Sony Store in Wisconsin (an hour north of Chicago). I called, they had one, drove up and they swapped me out. One of the reps also spent time with my old phone and never could get a lock.
The brand new handset locked in a measured 7 seconds from the system test menu, cold start. THAT's what it is supposed to be like. I just tried indoors at the hotel in an elevator (glass sided though) and about 10 seconds.
So definitely had a bad handset. Definitely a working one has acceptable performance!
Thank you -- being able to explore here kept me from assuming that the model was poor and just returning it. Happy camper again. to the OP JUST GET IT REPLACED!

Sent it back two days ago. New one should be here this weekend.

Location of Wifi antenna and how to acquire replacement

I did a couple searches on the official search and on google and found nothing so if this is a repost my apologies.
I have a verizon galaxy nexus, that randomly has been giving a real issue with it's wifi. Not sure how it came to be. I flashed a new rom and kernel and latest radios one day and noticed it dipped. I can be on top of the router and only show 2 MAYBE! 3 bars. Once I walk about 20 feet away I have 0-1... so I went ahead and recovered my old rom and settings via nandroid. No difference. I went back and reflashed using twrp, my old radios as well. Still no difference. Now just today after dealing with this for about 2 weeks I went ahead and fastboot flashed my phone back to stock and everything... low and behold... no difference. So I have come to the conclusion it could be hardware related. I opened my phone up and I have been taking guesses as to which antenna is actually the wifi one as I can't seemed to find any identifying marks and all the tear downs I find are for GSM models. But while I was in there, i made sure the pogo points were making contact, I cleaned all the components with electronics cleaner and everything. No difference for worse or better frankly. So replacing the antenna I guess is the only idea I have left to see but I don't wanna buy a whole broken phone for several 100 bucks.
Thanks

I can't help with the location of the antenna, but have you tried other routers? I know some of these phones can have trouble with some. Mine in particular has a very hard time staying connected on the 5ghz band on my home router even when I'm two feet away. After forcing it to the 2ghz band, it worked fine. Might want to try a different router, or even find a free hotspot somwhere, to test on another one before attempting to replace the antenna.

Sadly, it's all routers. My house one if I sit on my bad barely receives signal from the router half way on the other side of the room. Meanwhile my laptop can pick up the signal halfway into my backyard. Worked fine before the symptoms began.
Work routers, we have 2. One is a private network for our printers, I sit approximately 15 feet away from it and have about 2 bars. My other one from the main network does not even appear anymore. It is about 20-30 feet away thru 2 walls. Prior to the issue popping up, I had full bars for the one and about 2-3 for the other.
Changing settings on my home router does nothing sadly.

and have you used an app like WiFi Analyzer to see what the signal looks like just to make sure that it isn't a cosmetic issue with the signal bars?

the one router it picks up at work is sitting around -80-90 dbm when I am at my desk.
Between -70-80 when I told it up the antenna. The 2nd router remains unviewable.

interesting... mine shows -44 sitting across the office from my router; -4 to -8 if I hold it right over the router so yeah, I'd agree that you defintely have something going on.
pardon my lack of re-reading the entire thread but have you reloaded your radios? remember that a Nandroid backup and flashing a ROM and that kind of thing doesn't necessarily update/replace radios.
maybe getting a copy of the appropriate version of radios from here on XDA and then manually flashing those?
Hi. I'm having the exact same issue. Did you solve it? Thanks.
