How do I get map widget to list my current location? - HTC One X

I've had my One X just under a week now and I'm loving it.
One issue I am having is that the weather widget just shows 'Current Location' rather than the actual town name I am in. I am also finding that apps such as Foursquare also seem to take forever to update my current locaton.
If I go into Google Maps and tell it to pinpoint my current location it gives me the correct location.
I think the weather widget has shown the correct location once but no matter how often I refresh it, it now wont change.
Can anyone help with this or is it a common problem?

I had the same problem. I work in different counties and the HTC would either keep my hometown name or swap to current location.
For some reason it seems to have sorted itself out now. I've performed a few resets for one reason or another and so far the widget seems to update itself properly now.
Although it's a minor thing, it can be pretty annoying when it displays the wrong thing.

Thanks for that.
I've just rebooted the phone and it appears to have fixed it. At least its showing the correct location anyway. I guess I'll know for sure if it updates when I leave work this evening.

No worries. I should say that it did play up for a bit after the first time I reset the device (ie: showing home address normally and work address as current and vice versa depending on where the rest was done)
But for the past couple of weeks it's changed itself properly and not been a problem.

Htc Sense weather location wrong

Im running mighty's latest rom as of now and when i try to do my location in the weather tab, it puts me in kingston jamaica or karlovac which i dont even know where that is. anyways google maps gets my location correct and within 20 meters. any one got any help? btw ive run quick gps, didnt work.
AFAIK, at least with the stock VZ ROM, location for weather is picked up from the tower location, not GPS location. So that fact that Google Maps works OK doesn't really help much. You might try posting in a thread for Mighty's ROM.

There is probably a Menu on your Weather tab. Check the settings and make sure you have enabled the Automatic Updates.
Did you enable Location Services? Don't ask what it is. Do a search and find out for yourself. You will feel much better about yourself.
It is 19 degrees here, so if my weather tab wants to put me in Kingston Jamaica, I will go get packed now...
I also have this issue - with standard HTC Rom jan. '10
Hi,
I have the same issue, different locations of course ;-)
My location places me in the middle east instead of western europe...
If it takes my location from my tower location it doesn't make any sense....
Help...
I'm getting the same issue, it also thinks I'm near Kingston in Jamaica.
I'm in North Wales, UK so was quite confused to pick up my phone see the clock on Eastern Caribbean time and 25C with thunderstorms...bit weird as it was snowing outside at the time.
Google maps also thinks I'm in Jamaica. Is this an issue with Google location services?
J
Kind of the same issue, but not really.
Ok, I kind of feel everyone's pain here. Since Sprint was gracious enough to release the Win6.5 & Touch Sense 2.5 upgrade (FINALLY, YOU SPRINT ********), I upgraded last night. Initially, it had said Minneapolis, MN. I am in MN, but not in Minneapolis. I am in Brainerd, MN.
Long Story short, a couple of times, I seen it actually default to Brainerd, MN. But Went to look again and found that it went Back to Minneapolis.
I guess what would really be good here is an application or extension of the HTC Sense Weather program that would allow for you to explicitly define what you want to see on your "Home" tab in HTC Sense.
Basically, the GPS, Tower, whatever it is... would be an excellent tool for travel and shouldn't be disabled, but only made as an option as part of the above suggested suggestion. If I could select it when I am traveling, and choose which city I wanted when I am not, this would be so much better.
Lastly, is there a way to make it updates it's location? Or even change and/or remove the "Detected" city?
Any Help would be appreciated.
This is really frustrating me now...
I've just moved house, and my phone is insistent on me still living in the old town. I can go anywhere and it will update to the nearest town correctly, but as soon as I'm back on my wireless network at home it always goes to my old home town.
I can remove my wireless network settings and just use 3G at home, and it gets the correct town. It's ONLY through my home wifi network that it chooses my old town!

I think I have the same problem. My weather location isn't updating. I think it has something to do with the new radio 2.09

Have you used any other apps (like google maps) to verify your ability to get a good GPS lock since upgrading to that radio? Somtimes after flashing to a new radio it's necessary to reestablish that ability before your My Location will update properly
Hey all, I don't know if this issue is the same as what I was having but I know how frustrated I was so I figured I'd pass along my results (I did finally solve it)
EDIT: crap, I can't post outside links. Go to AndroidForums and search for a thread called I feel like I'm in the effin twilight zone it was created by me (same username).
In my case (Win6.5 TouchPro2):
Open GoogleMaps, let it use GPS, let GPS get hold of the satellites. Wait for a few minutes, let it download the map to show your location. Exit GoogleMaps.
Now MyLocation is correct, hence weather shown is correct.
HTC HD2 weather location wrong.
uuuummmm, solution is embarissing.
Click on the time.
Choose my location (that will use the gps)
If your gps is not working, select your location.

Weather widget and current location

Hi,
My weather widget shows my country as current location and not my town. Does anyone know how this current location thing exaclty work and how can I correct my problem. I can add my city manualy without any problems at all. Location tracking is turned on. But this damn widget still shows country and not the town I know that I can remove widget and add it again and select my town, but I want dynamic thing (current location). Tried weatherbug and it detects my location without any problems. Help and thanks.
My advice.. dont bother with the weather widget, all it does is tell you what you can find out by looking out the window.

I had the same problem here (Ireland). It just listed my country as the current location. I decided to try a different weather app called snow storm. BUT... After I tried out this app I realised (coincidence?) that my current location started working in the standard weather app!!! It shows the area Im in now (or closest big town, usually correct within 2km). Im in Dublin and it shows all the different regions of the city as I drive around I don't know what caused it to suddenly work but it does now. When it started working it was on and off for a day to two. If I refreshed the weatehr sometimes it would jump back to Ireland(current) and if I refreshed again 2 or 3 times it would jump to Stillorgan(current). i.e. the local area. Now it does not jump to country at all and always lists the current area. No idea how it started working though. no updates etc. try refreshing the weather 4 or 5 times in a row and see if it still says your country and not your town? Actually, my mobile operator (O2) started selling the phone around about the time it started working?! maybe its linked to that?
I tried to install application you've mentioned, tried to refresh 6 times weather app - no change at all Tried to delete location and weather data - still no change It would be very interesting to know how this location thing deas exactly work at all. Because and world clock app shows my location as Lithuania and not my town which is capital of Lithuania:/ And one more thing - Vilnius is not mentioned in available timezones list when Dublin is there. Maybe this all thing is because of that?
That is strange. I would expect Vilnius to be there. I would expect the capital city of all EU countries to be there. I can only think it must somehow be network related. The phone naturally gets this location information from your network somehow. If the network do not provide this information to the phone in a certain way maybe it cannot deduce your location? the fact that mine works now and DID NOT work for 3 weeks when I first got the phone (I even have a post about this) I think it must be network. I changed nothing else with the phone and its perfect now. Does your network sell the HTC Desire? Do they plan to sell it? I think when they do, your location will start working.
Problem is that one guy I know has HTC legend and he is in the same network I am and his legend shows Vilnius without any single problem:/ It still would be very interesting to know how the phone detects location - does it use some kind of cell info, does it use internet. Because if I want location services to work I must turn on mobile network. And when location services are turned off my current location is Minsk I think because it is in the same time zone as I am and because it is in the database. Can you look at your phone's timezones? Are you able to see Vilnius in there?
I wish too the weather widget could give a forecast. Looks great but not exactly practical. Shame.
I had exactly the same problem as you, the weather app showed my country and not the town was in. But somehow it managed to jump to the city (in Sweden) I was currently staying in, but now when I´m 300km away it still shows the same town.
I don't think there´s anything wrong with the network because the widget called Latitude shows updates very frequently and tells me where I am even in very small towns.
I think it has to do with
Menu -> Settings -> Location -> USE GPS satellites... I think, not sure
Edit: Confirmed.
I had update disabled (i update the widget manually) and from the previous update it got stuck at my country (Macedonia).
I ticked the previously mentioned option, enabled the internet, chose to update the weather, and it located my exact region.

Nah I know how to fix it, it worked for me.
Remove it from the home screen, then when you reattach it the widget (Clock as it's called) will ask you to choose a city and just simply pick "Current location" from the list. Remember to go to the weather app and update if the weather is not visible in the widget.

Nanchang?
Hi guys
I didn't want to create a new thread as I'm having similar problems to the OP.
Since yesterday, the current location and time on my home screen time/weather widget (the one with the flip clock and weather) shows that I'm in Nanchang, with the weather to suit (cos it certainly isn't 27 degrees celsius at 22:16 here in Leeds, West Yorkshire!).
I installed Gameboid last night, and a couple of games (roms); also NewsRoom, and installed Who Wants To Be A Millionaire 2010
I removed Radiant, and Toss It games to free up some space
I have tried selecting Leeds as the City when adding the clock widget, which is fine as it shows me the correct time and weather on the widget/home screen. However, the time on the taskbar at the top still shows as 22.23 (at moment of typing this), which is the time in Nanchang.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Mo
It's ok guys. Seems to have been a glitch with network whilst I was at work cos as soon as I left Morley (Leeds), phone automatically straightened itself out. Weird. But I'm happy.

HTC Weather Location Problem

Hello
I hope this isn't a repost.
I was wondering if anyone else is having an issue with the weather application not showing your correct location. Mine was working fine until Wednesday evening and now it just displays United Kingdom (Current Location). It does update the temperature and Google Maps knows where I am using cell location.
Anyone know of a fix or is this a wider issue with the the accuweather site?
Thanks
Paul
Mines been on the blink for a couple of weeks now. Some times it works and other times it just says UK
Same here - however, when I am in Bath (where the office is), Bath is shown, anywhere else on route now just says United Kingdom.
mine is the same went daft a few weeks ago worked for 1 day on wednesday and know is dead again just saying UK and thats it
Yep. Mine gone bat sh*t stupid too.
Even with gps on, it still doesn't get it right.
Ended up doing a work-around by going into the weather app, deleting all the irrelevant locations (paris, madrid etc) and manually added my city. Won't change when I go somewhere else, but rarely leave my city limits and its better than generic uk weather.
Not too fussed about it. Accuweather (who do the weather info for this widget) are not too crash hot on details anyway. Yesterday I was sat in my office, and it was raining so hard, it was hard to hear over the roar of the rain on the roof. My weather was saying "mostly sunny". Lol. Said the same after I refreshed it, and every uk news station saw this down-pour coming since tuesday.
You are better off having a link to the met office (if you in the uk) on your home page. Or just look out the window!

Mine too. Just says "current location" and nothing else. Has done for weeks.
Does anyone know if there is a fix or planned fix for the problem?
As i`m aware there is no fix, it was easy to fix on WiMo, maybe we should spam HTC for this ?
Weather newer worked on my location, but 2 miles away everything is fine
I think they're updating the locations all the time. Mine used to say Bamber Bridge even though I live in Leyland. It played up saying current location as United Kingdom and then started working again and shows my correct location.
I don't think there's any fix for this apart from manually adding your correct location until they get it fixed.

Ok thanks I'll spam them.
I wouldnt be so bothered but this was working last week and I've checked, Sheffield is still a real place....
weather location problem - fix!
I have been looking through other threads and have just found something that seemed to solve this problem.
Turn on the wifi (don't have to connect to any network, literally just have it turned on) and refresh the weather page and the location changes to your current location. Turn the wifi off and it's fine.
It has worked for me so far... I hope this helps someone else. (Phone: HTC Desire HD)

That was a solution for phones with winmo and manila 2.1 cooked in. Maybe try newer radio? I only assume that you all are using stock Desire rom... if not maybe check for update from chefs?
I had same issue with stock rom. After movind to Leedroid ones problem disapeared.

From what I can tell from my experience with the Desire weather widget, having accurate location data is largely dependant on connection quality. By this, I mean that if you're connected to wifi, you're going to get a much better read on things. When using GPRS, the weather seems to get a bit more vague - I'm lucky if I get "United Kingdom", since most of the time it will just say "Current location". I can't say what experience you'd get with EDGE or 3G, since I don't live in an area with either.
Your best bet is to ensure you give your phone every available avenue for location data. On a Desire running Froyo, from the Home screen, press:
Menu -> Settings -> Location
Make sure both "Use wireless networks" and "Use GPS satellites" are ticked, then back up out to the Home screen. Go back in to the weather widget (for reference, I mean the clock / weather combo widget here) and refresh it. Give it a little bit, and it should (about 75% of the time) update to your proper location.
Some times when this probably won't work / you may still have trouble:
- When you have your device connected to a computer for the purposes of USB file transfer, tethering or HTC Sync.
- When you are connected to a wireless network using an invalid IP (such as having a static IP set to 192.168.1.x in a 0.x range).
- When you find yourself inside a faraday cage, a mile beneath the surface of the Earth.
This is all likely just common sense stuff that most people are doing already, but hope it helps some of you.

[BUG]Clock app force closes

I've only had the HOX for a couple of days. Finally set it up, like I need it to be and then I noticed that my Clock app is force closing, so I can't reliable use it to wake me up in the morning. This is quite a nuissance for me, as even other alarm apps seem to not work properly on my HOX.
I'm on the latest official FW, no bootloader unlock, no root, just plain 1.29.401.7.
Is anybody else experiencing this issues?
Edit: Managed to fix it, at least for me.
All I did was in the settings remove the automatic timezone detection. The clock then opened first time.
However, Taipei is showing in the list, even though I've deleted it from my list of Cities - so I'm guessing there's some location caching issue somewhere.
Anyway, the alarm screen etc. all seems to work for me, so try that.
===========
Can't assist yet I'm afraid, but you aren't alone.
Just received my 3rd HOX (yellow spots, faulty GPS) today and after checking everything and thinking I have a perfect example - clock FCs on startup, every time, regardless of other apps running, straight after a fresh boot, etc.
Oh well, I guess it was too good to be true
Not a biggie for me, because I use Alarm Clock Plus, which worked fine on the previous two HOxs (HOXes?) so hopefully it won't bother me. I can't be bothered to reset to factory settings just to see if the clock works.
I'm on 1.28, preinstalled by T-Mobile, no root or unlocked bootloader yet.
Haven't had time to investigate it much further, but the error log says it's a
'Java.Lang.Nullpointerexception' in WorldClock.java that's the culprit, specifically to do with the updateWeatherData Source Method, so may be something to do with getting the current location?
Forum search only threw up this post, so perhaps its just you and me!
If I find a fix I'll add it here. If anyone else has already found one, please let me know!
Gavin
Hi
Same here, i noticed that my clock app is force closing from time to time. Also noticed that i untick the automatic time update then it starts working again. I think it has something to do with location as for some reason it is not able to find my location (the city) and when i select Brussels for the list it shows it in the map somewhere in Africa
I did remove the weather app form the ROM so maybe it has something to to with that.
I had this same issue and contacted HTC support through their website. They directed me to do a factory reset (!), which is definitely a suboptimal solution, but worked. No FC on the clock since then.

Weather App Problems

I currently am trying to use two weather apps on my Z1 that don't work properly, a Zooper Widget Pro widget and Weatherback . Both of these apps work as expected on my Nexus 7, but the locations seem to be off on my Z1. I do NOT have a data plan on my phone (but the Nexus obviously doesn't either). Does anyone have any suggestions for which settings I should check? My regular weather apps run perfectly on my Z1.
Thanks in advance.

What do you mean by 'locations seem to be off'? Is the weather not loading, or do you get weather for a different location? Does it not work for auto and manual location, or just auto, (try a manual location if you haven't yet). I had a similar problem that turned out to be caused by not having Gapps installed, since there's some service that Gapps provides that you need yo have an alternative for.

Thanks for replying.
I've entered my location manually in Weatherback. It seems to work better. "World Weather Online" seems the most accurate in Minneapolis. I will experiment with the other two.
I also made a formula change in Zooper Widget Pro that seems illogical if the phone location is the issue. If I simply enter "#LLOC#" for the location command I get odd locations, one 100 miles away and one nearly 1500 miles away (Only the same 2, Tomah, WI and Tonopah, NV). However, I entered a variation of the following formula in all the weather related items: "$#LLOC#!=#LLOC#?****:#W0MAXN# / #W1MINN#$", which returns "68 / 54", as an example. This has been returning the correct local weather for the last few hours. Could be a fluke, but I've never gone even an hour in my house without an incorrect reading. I definitely have no idea why this works.
***Hmmm. Just as I finished the last paragraph I noticed that my location in Zooper is again incorrect. The weather temps, both predicted and current, are correct, as is the condition (Cloudy). Totally flummoxed by this.
Re: GAPPS. In Weatherback I have occasionally gotten a crash message related to GAPPS when altering the settings. I'm assuming this indicates that GAPPS is installed.
Any additional thoughts will be appreciated.

Don't know much technical stuff, but see the last few posts of crdroid thread, (http://forum.xda-developers.com/sony-xperia-z1-compact/development/rom-crdroid-android-t3117940), for the answer I got from someone who seems to know about it. Maybe it applies to your situation.
