Hi all,
Quick question. Is it possible to flash another kernel after you've used a ROM for some time? Or do you have te reflash the ROM as well and start from scratch?
thanks

You just need to flash the kernels boot.IMG then get into recovery and flash the modules.

You can flash a kernel at anytime you like to. No need to start ROM from scratch.
Just make sure to flash the modules that come with the kernel too.
thanks both! this thread can be closed

Hey,
Would it be possible to flash CM7 with the stock kernel on Xperia Arc S?
I want to try a new ROM but I'm not sure if you need another kernel than the stock. And I couldn't find any existing thread with this problem
(I have rooted it and an unlocked the bootloader)
I hope you can help me out
Bram
You need to flash the kernel of CM7 or any custom kernel that's compatible with CM7.
As FXP already stated in his thread:
FXP said:
HOWTO
to flash cm7 rom you have to take 3 steps (after unpacking the 7z archive)
step 2 - flash new kernel (always use the kernel provided in CM7 / it is incompatible with stock ROM)

Yup, AOSP-based ROMs don't work with the stock kernel.
Okay thanks. And when I want to get back to my origional ROM (stock), I don't have to flash another kernel. Or do I have to change the kernel everytime I change the ROM? And what makes Doomkernel so special actually?

Some ROMs need specific kernels to work properly. Of course this doesn't necessarily mean that each time you change your rom, you will have to change your kernel as well. Most of the times, in the thread of each ROM you will find info on what kernel is needed each time.
I'm using DoomKernel because I'm very satisfied with its speed and its CWM recovery which is veeery helpful if you wanna try things on your phone!
I already use CWM. Isn't there a kernel that works with any ROM

Is it possible to use latest HELLBOY kernel with that ROM? - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1954967

Just to reconfirm - that one?: [Kernel] [PrimoU] 2012/12/02 Titanium-KISS http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1765687

One more question
I have root, TWRP 2.3.1.1. recovery and latest Titanium-Kiss kernel.
Is it mandatory that I flash kernel again?
Also - is mandatory to delete kernel that is in ROM zip file, or can I just leave it there and it will do no harm?
Sorry, it will be my first custom ROM...
I'll try that one first, as is says "stable" - hope to learn a lot and then, when I'll know how to do it and reverse it, to go to CM10... - what do you think? Which one? Not which ROM is the best, I read that it's prohibited to question that, but just your idea as "guru", what do you think?
Thank you very much in advance and best regards, Mat

See as long as u stay in aosp it's not necessary to flash the kernel again
Pa,aokp,cm10 are based on aosp
But if u switch to sense u have to
Ur twrp Is correct
Although using a unpublished version is not safe
And. Leave the kernel in the zip ...don't mea with it...it's personal opinion ....all roms are same but customization differs ...if u flashing first time try cm10
Here is a detailed procedure

One more for the road...
First, I'd like to thank you for your reply :good:
Just one more question:
- as I'm going from stock ROM to custom, I thought to make "clean" install - wipe everything, including SD card and start from beginning, installing first new ROM, then gapps, then all my apps, do all settings and so on...
- is that a good idea? :fingers-crossed:
I'd rather do that, because I don't know if I do restore how all backed up apps will behave on new ROM...
Thank you very much in advance and best regards, Mat
Nahh....formatting the sd card ain't necessary ....but doing a full wipe for the phone is a must

Don't see where mate ... otherwise i would have not asked, i only see you used stock kernel
Edit 1 : ah you talk about cores......my eyes only check for the word : kernel
Edit 2 : I've seen reports of not booting in the thread a while ago, you can try to get your hands on the 0.6 or 0.5 and try again

You should just be able to flash the ROM by itself (unless you wanta custom kernel).
i had rooted my htc one v with stock rom i.e. PrimoU_Asia_HK_2.24.708.1_Stock_Rooted_ODEX_FULL.
and i won't be able to get kernel for this rom.
if anyone know , then do reply.

Usually kernel partition image is included within a rom file. Open the rom zip file and look for the file boot.img.

Sorry for asking mate. Just to be sure... Did you flash the kernel file separately with fastboot command using usb cable? And have you tried to allow booting for 5-10 min. after the flash? If yes then you might really need another stock kernel to search (what probably you do with your initial post).
For a stock ROM, you can also use titanium kiss kernel. There are links to kernels in most Dev threads. Pick a sense ROM and grab the to kernel from there.
I also think that in q&a, someone recently asked for stock kernel and one was posted.
Happy searching
