Anyone know an easy way to dim the Dinc Soft, Capacitive Keys? I've searched around and haven't found a solution. Most apps seem to only be able to turn off the backlight on the soft keys....not dim them.
That is because they only recognize 1s and 0s (on and off, they're a switch, not a dimmer).
Damn....cause the Dinc's backlight on those Soft Keys is pretty damn bright. Wish I could fix this. For now, I just disabled the backlight...

You need to use a script in the init.d folder if your rom supports it. If not you need to use an app like script manager to run it at every boot. This is the script for the incredible, not sure if the path is the same for the aria.
Code:
#!/system/bin/sh
sleep 10
chmod 0666 /sys/devices/platform/leds-gpio/leds/button-backlight/brightness
echo "0" > /sys/devices/platform/leds-gpio/leds/button-backlight/brightness
chmod 0444 /sys/devices/platform/leds-gpio/leds/button-backlight/brightness
All you need to do is download an app called "screen filter." Launch the app, and then you may have to tap on the notification. Then, you can turn your led buttons off pretty well (they may light as soon as you turn screen on, but that's it.) This app is great. You can also using it during the night, when you're texting under the sheets, or when you want to save your battery, because you can make your screen darker than you can from your phone's settings. Please be careful though, do not set the brightness too low! hope this helps!

I know this has probably been mentioned 1000 times but why doesn't anyone make an app that will let you manually turn the soft key lights on or off on a non-rooted dinc.
So many clock apps, etc have the option of forcing the softkey lights off, prove that it could be easily done since those apps are available for non-rooted dincs.
If anyone has a solution (other than the black e-tape one) please let me know. You can't see the buttons worth a crap unless the room is very well lit. in other words useless at night in the house with normal lighting. Yes I know I could cover the sensor with my thumb but there has to be a solution lurking out there somewhere.
thanks in advance.... johncal
There is. It's called Screen Filter. You can use it to do really low brightness (like when you use your phone in bed, not what she said ) and also manually turn softkey lights on or off. Actually, I'm not sure about forcing on, but it does turn off softkey lights for as long as you want.
Seriously, why do you want to turn them off? I sorta memorized the position of the softkeys.
I find the softkeys way too bright, so I've always used apps to turn them off in the past, never on.
In addition to trying Screen Filter as recommended above, give LEDs Hack a try. It's primarily designed to turn them off, but maybe the "ON" button will work... I'm really not sure.
For what it's worth, CM7 lets you control the softkeys. Specifically, if you go into the auto-brightness levels, you can turn them on/off for a given brightness level. From my experience, it seems that these settings stick even when you're not using auto-brightness. I turned off soft-keys at all the levels, and they stay off even when I'm not in auto-brightness.
With CM7, I no longer have to use Screen Filter for turning off the softkeys, but I do still use it to dim the screen very low.
I really want to keep the softkeys on not off. I'm also running a stock non-rooted rom. Phone's fine for me the way it is except that I just want the ability to keep the softkey lights on. I guess I'm just surprised that no one has come up with a solution for that.
Screen filter is for turning them off and unfortunately, LED hack is for rooted phones. Thanks for the suggestions though.

Where are the softkey settings in CM7? I looked under the autobrightness settings place but couldn't find anything.

Menu > Settings > CM Settings > Display > Automatic Backlight > Edit other levels
Lower / Upper = readings from the light sensor
Screen = the screen brightness you want based on the lower/upper light sensor values
Buttons = whether or not you want the softkeys on. Unfortunately, they cannot be dimmed (hardware limitations, from what I've read), so 255=on and 0=off
In the default configuration, for example, if the sensor value is 0-199, the screen will be set to brightness 25 and the softkeys will be turned on. If the sensor value is >399, notice that the softkeys turn off (button value changes to 0). If you want the buttons on all the time, set all button values as 255. If you're like me, and you hate the softkey lights, set all button values to 0.

Byrong, youre the man. Did not know about this. Bye bye softkey lights. Thanks!
Is there a way to lower the brightness of the Menu buttons below the screen? I have found an app called Screen Filter that can turn the LEDs for those buttons off completely but I would rather just turn down the brightness. Also, can these be used for notifications somehow? I am on CM7.1 btw.

It's just on or off for the buttons.

Hmmmm, was afraid that was gonna be the case. Oh, well. Thanks.
I really hate how the capacitive buttons are so bright, is it a way to fade them? please help!
i dont think there's a way to reduce brightness in the capacitive led's. You can adjust the time-out from 3 to 1.5 seconds... but that's about it.
i know how you feel, especially when im using the kindle app in night mode, the capacitive button slight up every time i touch the screen or turn the page, and despite the screen being on minimum brightness, everytime the capacitive lights come on, they blind me. I have since resorted to physically turning off the capacitive backlight completely when im using the kindle app.
if there is a way to reduce the brightness on them, i'd also love to know about it.
I think the only solution is wait for a developer to modify that with a diferent kernel script, meanwhile Im using Screen Filter app to disable the soft-keys light, its not perfect but my eyes are resting now lol, I hope a nice developer see this thread and try to come out with a better solution.
CM7 has a capacitive button dimmer if I'm not mistaken

im running juggernaut 3.7 and in "display" there is a "touch light duration" option for always off.

I saw it but I dont think CM7 is ready for a daily driver rom and I dont know if its actually a dimmer to lower the light or just to activate it as notification lights
Hi, I was wondering if there is a way to dim or turn off the the the back lights of the four led soft keys of aokp? I can't find a way on the internets for our phone :/

Not sure If it's the same it go to settings, display then touchlight key duration. And there you should be able to turn off

Watch QBkings video of this rom, he shows how to turn these on screen buttons off in the first two or three minutes. Forget this, misread the question
There used to be an application called led hack that would turn off the capacitative buttons. Not on the market but you night be able to find the apk and see If it works

Not to be a necromancer but I'd really like to tackle this and be able to turn the backlights off.
LED Hack does not work for our device but Screen filter does, It'll turn the lights off until you turn the screen off and back on, the lights will then turn back on.
I'm not seeing anything in the logcat that gives a hint as to what the app is doing.
Any news on this?
It seems like many ICS based ROMs, not only AOKP, keep the capacitative button lights on whenever the screen is on. This causes more battery to drain and makes it hard to use as a clock radio (too bright). I have yet to find a setting to turn that off so it times out like most GB ROMs.

On any TW based ICS rom, you can select them to be always off.
Menu -> Settings -> Display -> Touch Key Light Duration
there should be a flashable zip to turn off the lights either in the codename thread or the aokp thread
Hello,
i'm trying to dim capacitive buttons because for my taste they are way too bright.
In /sys/class/leds/button-backlight/ which file should I edit?
Editing brightness i can turn then on or off, but i want them on, but on dimmiest mode.
Editing currents i can turn then on or off, but i want them on, but on dimmiest mode.
Editing max_brightness does nothing.
The only file that makes me happy and dims leds, by editing lut_cofficient, setting to 1. This way leds are barely lit.
But on screen off or reboot it restores back to original setting.
What sould I do to make them stay dim?
I have been searching for a while, but I go nowhere.
Thank You!
you can write a .sh script and set it to start at boot
or use tasker($6) to make your own app
lut_coefficient seems to control the brightness properly :S

+1 for tasker.
I don't know how this app hasn't recieved more coverage.
This app is one of the best, most useful and functional apps there is.

I would like to go that script way. How do I create a script? Is there a tutorial how to create a script?
echo 1 > /sys/class/leds/button-backlight/lut_cofficient
i dont think its possible to do this with a script, as the lut_coefficient resets to 100% on Screen-OFF and screen-ON,
you have to make your own app
or find a really good script manager
or make a script that keeps your phone awake and kill your battery in 1 hour
EDIT: it wouldn't take you more than 15 mins to make the app in tasker (7 days trial)
Another Idea for you, you can use Screen Filter app
to turn soft-key's backlighting off.
I use it when I read at night, it works great
here i made you an app(requires root) you can post on your home screen
hxxp://dl.dropbox.com/u/102990830/Low_Light.apk
i find it a bit difficult to make it run automatically when screen turns on

That's a great workaround. Thank you.
I still hope, that someone will make proper permament method for that diming capacitive buttons.

Screen filter is great, but I need something that only dims the buttons, not to turn then off.
Ok managed to make another one (delete old one) , this one sets lut_coefficient to 1 when device starts and when screen turns on. I think HTC will fix this thing in coming JB update.
Here's the link:Low_Button_Backlight.4.apk
Don't forget to press thanks for my 15 mins effort
This is program is better, but still not perfect. Lut_coefficient comes back to original state if there is bright enought and system decides to turn lights off and when it switches back on it will be in its original state.
Maybe it is somehow possible to prevent system from diting that file?
