So, I'm having trouble getting a reliable 4G signal. I'm in the Chicago area, so I think 4G coverage should be pretty good. I also asked a guy I work with who has T-Mo, and he said his 4G is good. Could the ROM affect it at all, or is it just the radio? Speeds also seem pretty good, so I can't figure out if it's maybe just the icons.
Could be a radio/modem issue try flashing a different modem like the blaze modem also check your mobile network settings
You can find most of the modems here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1426001

What about my network settings specifically?
Also, I replied in that thread (still the last post). I seem to have trouble flashing those.

I my self have a Skyrocket on AT&T. But I bought one for my mom, a Tmobile T989 which is unlocked and she uses it on AT&T. I have it configured to use the right AT&T APN and it shows up as 3G but the best I get speed wise is maybe 2.5meg down. Im thinking it needs to be somewhere in the 5-8meg range for at least just 3G/HSPA.
I have the latest LDE installated and its modem and same results (as prior 2.3.6 version, cant remember which modem that was).
I saw Mr.X's thread on different flashable modems, but wanted to see what others have used and got say good 3G/HSPA+ performance on it via say AT&T.
I basically see Tmo UVKL1 being recommended as the best or the Telus KJ3 for dual channel HSPA (maybe thats why im not getting past 2.5meg down).
Thank
Dixit
an att radio would be best for atts network
Wanted to make sure that was possible and not brick this phone. I know the two are fairly similar, but didnt really notice in that other thread any of the Skyrocket modems so thought maybe they are either not compatible or not recommended.

Alright will give it a shot. Right now the T989 using the LDE radio gets me service on AT&T and no real issues with the exception as I said about not getting more than 2.5meg down. I will try that last maintenance leak Skyrocket radio we got on the 2.3.6 and see how that goes.
Thanks

Dixit,
What modem did you end up with for the best speeds? I have the t989 and a net10 sim, on ATT, ready to go.
Will a skyrocket modem brick the t989?
Thanks,

Let us know how it goes! I'm curious as to the result because I thought sky rocket radio would at least keep from booting. But the radio might just ignore the lack of lte and btw my Co worker just ran a speed test on 3g with att and got 1.2mps.

Adding my experience here now that I'm on net10 with AT&T:
Tried Tmobile UVLE1 and Telus modems (see Tdj's modem listing thread). Speeds seem to be the same on both. Battery life was better on the Telus modem but a lot of my calls sounded like a modem connection. If I rebooted I could make a call and it would sound fine.
So for now I'm back to UVLE1.
In North Dallas area.

have you tried AT&T radios?
No, I'm afraid to brick. I've not been able find strong references to anyone trying it and living to tell the tail.
I've done a lot of searching on the forums though and the 2.5 to 5 Mbps I'm seeing are consistent with others reports of Att, Straight Talk Att, and Net10 Att speeds. Additionally, I've done many speed tests with my buddy, who is using Att's S2 and the speeds are consistent.
At this point I have to believe an Att radio would do no better.
Hope this helps,
Brandon

Everything seems to work relatively well with my current unlocked device on ATT. Only problem is data seems kind of patchy (speedtests show it just spiking and dropping like mad, have to hit retry frequently when loading pages or surfing the app store, etc). I am using the ATT APN settings based around the wap.cingular stuff that seems to be the most common. I average around 1mb speeds so my question is would I benefit from finding a different radio for this setup? If so which one should I try?
Device is running the Darkside venom ICS build. Thanks.

I plan on going to a straighttalk sim. Which would be off att (that's the sim I want) and I'm going to keep the ice cream sandwich kernel on it ulve1 I believe it is. I would NOT flash an att radio. I believe that would brick it.

False, you can interchange between SR and herc radios kernels and roms. Just don't odin anything.
Btw to op. Sell your herc and buy a SR for cheaper + using LTE = profitx2

Not according to mr vlad.. which makes sense cause of LTE. Plus for me i cant get anybodys LTE where i live.
Unless the Herc ignores the LTE frequencies using that radio?

I didn't think the ST plans supported LTE, so SR on ST isn't any benefit over the T989?
To the OP, you might check out here:

But one can still flash an att radio and the Hercules would ignore the lte? Or would flashing a sr radio brick the device?

OK, why do folks have an interest in flashing skyrocket stuff onto the T989? Just get a carrier unlock from TMO, get an ATT or ST ATT sim, and pop it into the T989, talk away. What am I missing? What does the SR have that the T989 doesn't?

Brick the device, they're interchangeable. Herc does not ignore lte. They don't even pick it up.

For faster data and stronger signal you want an att radio which is design to optimize those bands.
SR has LTE. other than that they're identical

its ymmv, the stock radio can pick up H+ on AT&T but for users who have slow data, flashing AT&T radios helps. Unless you're just trying to prove me wrong or something.

Trying to find some data. Something like "on att with tmo radio I get 2 MbS download, but same phone on att with att radio I get 4mbs".
I know that different combinations of radios and roms can improve reception in some areas.
I also haven't seen anything that indicates the MAGNITUDE of the difference.
I get that sometimes, maybe, if you're having trouble with your current reception, you might be able to get better reception if you flash some other radio. (from your current carrier or a different carrier)
BUT some folks think that they should almost routinely flash their T989 to an att radio if they want to use it on ATT. I haven't seen it help at all on my phone.
So my question is two fold, what is the MAGNITUDE of the difference, and, how OFTEN does it make a difference. I was hoping someone had some data on that.
Thanks!
I have been flashing for years and i just came over from ATT SG3 where i had no problems flashing and retaining 4g, but now on tmobile every rom i flash all i ever get is 3g and never 4g .. only for a brief second. the reason i came from ATT was the unlimited data.. can someone please assist as i used CM10, AOKP, WICKEDv5, blackjelly..... i cant figured it out. any help would be appreciated.

Hmm i would think Phoenix should have good service. Maybe you should Odin back to stock and start all over. Radio is the only reason i can think of that would affect the speed.

Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
well on the t-mobile variations the best you can get is H+ and most ROMs show that. other than that, try using a different kernel. that was the problem for me where my data wouldn't even work sometimes.
It looks like op knows the difference between 3g and 4g/H+ he noticed that he only gets 4g for like a second here and there and that's it.

I had a similar problem. What happened with me was one day I went from great 4G (HSPA+) speeds 80ms Ping, 25MB Down, 4MB Up to all of the sudden a 1200ms Ping with 0.05MB Down and NO UPLOAD.
Turns out it was a problem with some towers in my area. Took T-Mobile two weeks to fix everything. Not sure if that is what's happening here but it could be possible.

Really only one way to find out....flash a different modem and test it out. Just make a note of what modem you are on now and you can always flash back if signal is worse.

Generally no. It might affect what codes are displayed (LTE, 4G, E... vs. H+, H, etc) but most do not affect the radio unless you load the wrong ROM for your baseband (xxxxxMDL, etc.). Check settings for APN (can be rom affected) and radio band with *#2263# to be sure.
You can use any modem version on any rom... Your firmware version doesn't have to match your modem/baseband version. That's why people pull them and post them. So you can try each one and find which works best for your location. By testing modems out you can achieve anything from better service to better battery life.
But yeah nobody has pulled and posted them for tmo. I was actually looking just 2 weeks ago. We only have 2 tho. I pulled the modem from my phone which is running MDL but never tar'd it. Was going to pull the other from a tar but download of the tar was slow as hell and my pc shut down (thanks MS for the updates. Perfect timing) and killed the download and never got back around to re-downloading it.
