Google Voice Typing (I think that's what it is, the little mic button), its extremely irritating because when i accidently click the button on the sense keyboard it comes up and throws me off, i will never use it. Is there any way to get rid off it, preferably without rooting? I have tried disabling it in the apps section, but this results in the Sense keyboard not opening and working properly
Help please!
*Also this is my first EVER forum post.. weird i know, but tell me if ive done anything that forum users like yourselves deem as not right; thanks.

Your first post was fine as far as I know there is no way to remove the microphone button but I use the stock ICS keyboard and I believe you can.

Same here, i asked the same question, always hitting the voice key so either use swift key or the ics keyboard from play store.
Cant get to grips with either of those either though.

Thanks guys
Or you also can disable the the voice search in settings- apps - all and reboot, then you will have keyboard without the Voice icon.
Or you could give voice typing a go, it actually works really well! if i'm by myself i always use it over the keyboard since its much faster and less effort
Thanks ck, did that, good enough fix for me! And i have tried it, its just abit extravegant and i can text really fast, but thanks anyhoo

I have battled with this problem as well. I am using Google Keyboard, and am very happy with it.
Today I found a decent workaround:
In Google Keyboard settings, there is a setting for "Voice Input key", under which you can either move the little mike button to the symbol keyboard, or remove it altogether.

Does anybody else have trouble with pressing the (portrait and stock) keypad and getting what they meant to press? My last phone was a Nokia 5800, which is much smaller, yet I had no trouble fast-typing stuff.
I thought I'd get used to it but, after 3 months, I'm still having trouble typing. I'm still having to correct everything I type.

I know what you mean, I type almost perfectly on an iPhone (not trying to praise it) and I still get lots of wrong letters on my Play after months of use. That's considering I've used the stock keyboard, smart keyboard pro and swype < ofc this one wasn't supposed to touch every letter but still
Coming from an n900 with a physical keyboard I find it a nightmare. Closest I've found to acceptable is stock keyboard with gestures (swype) enabled.
Got swift key x and slide it in the 10p sale. Didn't like either?

MessagEase - weird at first, but it gets easier and you can get pretty fast with it once you get used to it. Some complain about the size in Landscape mode, but you can make it bigger. I like it.
I find Smart Keyboard Pro gives me the just keep typing and have faith it will end up ok experience that the iPhone does and is much better at adding words to the dictionary. Make sure you do the calibration bit in the settings and it should be almost perfect.
Why does nobody like Swype?
I use Swype with auto correction OFF, but word suggestions on,
And I can type quite fast and also get correct words and spellings..
I find typing a lot less accurate than the iPhone on stock keyboard and the ICS keyboard (which is slightly better than stock). The swype setting is quite good when you get used to it, but I can't see any reason why typing should be worse than the iphone.
There are no calibration settings on stock keyboard either??
Maybe the touchscreen is less accurate than the iphone. Not a major problem. Just means I have to type slower.
I still love my Xperia though.

Have installed Smart keyboard pro and been using it since my last post and I have to say that it is like night and day compared to the stock keyboard and the ics keyboard.
So much better

Swype for me.
I don't see the need for any other keyboard.
I just flashed Calkulin new ICS rom and for some reason the htc keyboard crashing after typing a few letters. Ive searched this forum and found no answer. I PM calkulin about this problem and of course no reply. Can someone suggest a keyboard that just as good as this one or at least a fix to keep it from crashing out.
I like this keyboard because of the dedicated typing area it gives you when in portrait mode.

May I suggest Perfect Keyboard Free or the AI type keyboard. They are both good keyboards to me. I like Perfect Keyboard Free a little better. They are highly configurable and feel like the htc keyboard that I had on my EVO. I am currently using Perfect Keyboard on FC07 without a problem. It is fast, responsive, and does what I want it to do.

Go keyboard is the best in my opinion. You can customize theme and everything
Sent from my iPhone killer.
If you use ICS Rom, there are lots of chances that you may see the weird stop errors from many places something like system apps, user apps and even from the network communications.
For many cases, if it started failing then it will continue to fail until you remove the failing apps. Or sometimes, rebooting the phone resolve the issue but it could happen again in any moment.
So, best way to resolve the issue in ICS Rom would be reinstalling the failing app.
In my opinion, it seems like there're some bad process or service running that makes other applications force-stopped. Once the application force stopped, usually the system is getting warm and hot (meaning it's continuously retrying to launch the application or doing some post processing).
If the re-installing the application does not resolve the issue, then the best way would be 'waiting' until stable ICS Rom comes out in the market.
For me, lots of application re-installed because of force stop error -
Youtube(stock), Waze, Xing player, n7player, battery monitor, email (stock), facebook(stock), Root Toolbox( seems like compatibility issue with ICS)...
I had the problem of the keyboard popping up even though I repeatedly selected SlideIt. I finally just took it out by way of TB
I use htcime_mod on my non-sense (lol at the pun) roms as well. I found that disabling the Prediction/Spell Correction/Word Completion under the Text Input option keeps the keyboard from crashing. This may suck for those of you who rely on auto-correction and suggestions, but i personally have a vendetta against t9 and i only use this keyboard for the ease of symbols access.
I proffer that the issue is thus dependent of the way the IME accesses the dictionary to correct/suggest words. Maybe the libraries are renamed/moved, and it is trying to access an invalid path? Just a theory.
Above all, remember that YMMV because I am using an HTC Vision (T-mobile G2) running CM9 pre-alpha 2.5 unofficial ICS build.
Hope this helps,
Rec

Hello everyone! I just got my One X on Monday and so far I'm pretty happy with it, despite some small hiccups due to the first version of the SW.
Today I have installed an alternative camera app from the Market (Lg Camera Pro) and I turned off in the options the sound of the shutter. Guess what? The HTC stock keyboard stopped playing its sounds eversince, and no matter what I do there is no way to have them back. I have also uninstalled the Lg Camera app, but to no avail.
My idea is that the app has somehow overwritten some system file and as a result the keyboard is now mute. But is it possible, considering the handset is not even rooted yet?
Any ideas are very welcome.. if I don't find any other solution I will have to go for a full reset.
I have a heap of iPhone mates that I wish could find this LG app you mention. They all sit there in the room, going tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick on their phones while txting...sounds like a bloody stenographer's convention!
Sorry, I have no answer to your problem, but I am glad people around you are enjoying the silence

How about your screen lock / unlock? Is the sound still on? If doesn't then try to install some sound manager apps (ex: Audio manager) and check the volume level for system.
Awesome tip OP! A way to remove annoying keyboard sounds, will apply it if I get this phone and trial it on other devices.

You can always disable the keyboard sound via the keyboard setting menu. Most of the HTC device come with keyboard sound turned off.
I normally use the keyboard on mute, but that has nothing to do with the fact that I should be able to turn the sound on if I wish to do so!
Anyway I had to do a factory reset from recovery to have it back. Thanks to all.

It's an entirely different way of typing. Swype is faster because you don't have to remove your finger from the keyboard (at least not that often).
Swiftkey is faster because it predicts words insanely well, if you write "I'll be there in 5 min" for example it will suggest "be there in 5 min" after you write I'll.
It's a very intresting piece of software which learns what you type the most and how you type it.
Also the new beta even adds spaces between words if you have forgotten it (check video in the thread in VIP section of swiftkey for example).
I tried Swype, Swiftkey, SlideIT, stock keyboard, Sense 4.0 keyboard and I still love Swiftkey the most. At the start it isn't that great but when you use it a few days it becomes 10x better (because of the "learning" of the software).

Hi
Anyone know how to tell Swype Beta to use google voice instead of the fire "Dragon Dictate" as Jellybean has offline voice typing and is far superior.
Just a shame the stock samsung keyboard with its swipe isnt as good.
Anyway, so far only way Ive found by leaving swype as default is to pull down notification bar when Im about to do voice typing and just select google voice from the input method.
I would just prefer to press the mic button though...
Thanks

Swype is not open source correct?
If not, could one develop an app that overlaps the voice button on Swype provides that launches Google Voice instead?

If one likes Swype but HATES the terrible predictive speech recognition of Dragon Go, yes it does matter.
That being said, I guess we can't do it, so thanks to the poster who brought Kii to our attention; it'll do, though it's not as fluid as Swype for keyboard swyping.
Temporary Solution
Sorry that I'm a little late getting in on this thread, but I have a temp solve.
(Disclaimer ... for anyone interested: I, too, use Swype, religiously, because it is way faster than any other gesturing keyboard in Android - I type a lot of text, using a Note 2, and Swype is constantly helping me break all my speed records. Dragon, however, is a pain, for one, because it is not as stable as Google Voice, often giving me grief when connectivity is sporadic; but also because the software is slightly more bloated than Google Voice, causing the annoying "fade in" graphical interface which drags down on its listening response time. This lag is noticeable when you are "Swyping" at 80 words a minute when transitioning to speaking texts suddenly takes 4 times as long as "Swyping.")
Sooooo...
A temporary solution (despite the extra key presses) is to...
1) Long press on the text window
2) Select "Full Editor" from the pop up menu
3) Tap the "Google Mic" icon
And that's pretty much it. It is, unfortunately, an annoying solution, but for me, it's working faster than Dragon on the average. Hope that helps someone, particularly JoeyDVDZ

Not having Google Voice with Swype finally bothered me enough that I have been working on such a thing! I have a proof-of-concept working fairly well on my phone (Nexus 4), and now I'd like to find someone with a rooted S3 willing to try it out there. It requires root to be able to inject keystrokes into an app. If you have a rooted S3, please shoot me a message at [email protected], and I'll discuss it with you some more.
(I've posted a similar message in the S4 section. Since these are two of the most popular devices, I'd like to see if, and how well, it works on them before pursuing it further.)

Yes, it's built in to my Nexus 4, but it's not as good as Swype at getting the word I want. I've tried them all, and I always end up coming back to Swype. Google's voice typing is better than Dragon Dictate, though, so this is the best of both.

You might be thinking of the previous Google Now, like back in the KK days?
I use Nova Launcher, and I custom mapped a swipe up gesture on the homescreen to pull up Google Now. Seems to be an easy workaround for the functionality in the "good old days" lol.

It may take me some getting used to. My biggest criticism, is now having to talk to your phone "Siri style".
I personally found the contextual screen scanning function in Tap to be very useful, a major step forward, as opposed to now having to talk to, and ask your phone questions.

Used it for a while now too...
You could try adding that line to it in hopes that it still works.
If anything, try setting main language to English (US Virgin Islands)
Use flar2 button mapper and have both assistant and now on tap.
I would like to know if there's a way for us 10 users to get the U Ultra sense companion
I saw somewhere that soon it will be available, but dont know where....
I can't stand the assistant. I use google now all the time to search for things by typing them in. I'm also a big fan of the cards showing me weather, travel, sports, stocks and news all on one screen. The assistant that replaced it only allows you to interact with your voice, which is something I have zero interest in doing. The most I ever used the Now on tap voice controls was to set alarms or reminders.
I uninstalled all updates to the Google app and it returned to the classic Google Now functionality. If they ever try to force the assistant on me more than they already have I might seriously consider an iPhone.
