So, since ICS ROMs became available for the T-Mobile G2, this is the first time I cannot find any custom ROM that I actually like. So I want to go back to using the CM7 ROMs. Anything I need to take special attention to?
I am currently running the "unofficial CM9" ROM with Clockwork Mod Recovery 5.0.2.7. I could not find a walk thru or any guides for going back to GB.
Thanks!
Just like any rom, backup what you'd like, do a full wipe (superwipe and or fastboot wipe is prefered) then flash rom of choice, gapps-kernel-mods if needed.

OK, just making sure. If I never messed with kernels or anything else, I imagine I just wipe and flash ROM/gapps...?
Correct, after you wipe just follow the instrucitons the dev has provided for your rom of choice. Some will need you to flash gapps, some flash kernel, some other mods if you'd like. Going from gingerbread to froyo to ics to donut to cupcake to eclaire, if you wipe that's all that matters before install

The only issue I can see with going back to GB is if your partitions were ext4 (which they should be otherwise ics is laggy) and the ROM only supported ext3.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using xda premium
Interesting point. I rarely do any other mods or optimization, but that may be my problem. Lag is one of my main gripes. How can I tell if I am partitions to ext4?
if you have 4ext recovery there is an option there to format system or at least check system formats, you will see either ext3 or ext4
im sure this can be done other ways, maybe through terminal or adb but this is a simple way of checking and or changing the system format
Definitely get 4EXT. It allows easy non-destructive formatting from EXT3 -> EXT4 either via recovery or via the app. It's an incredible recovery with an awesome developer who is very active and partial to feedback.
There were a bunch of Andromadus users awhile back suffering from lag & stuttering at times w/ ICS and they all had their partitions still as EXT3. I know that going from EXT3 -> EXT4 on GB was a huge performance increase for me and I'd assume it would be the same, if not more, on ICS..
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using xda premium
I'll have to search for a guide as my recovery doesn't appear to show me anything about next, but maybe I'll give pics another try with ext4 before going back to GB.
Edit: Oh I see, there is a separate recovery called 4EXT. Gonna try it now.

Try 4EXT Touch. I was very hesitant about switching to touch-based recoveries (old habits die hard), but am now glad I have and wish I'd done it sooner
Snazzy looking. Does this image mean I am on ext4 already then...?

Well, backto CM7, but now having Market hiccups.
Did you do a full wipe? Try clearing the cache for google play under settings>manage applications
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium
I did SuperWipe, installed CM7, installed latest GB gapps. Once booted, Google "Market" (I thought GB was also updated to "Play"??) was telling me it cannot install things due to an error. I went into recovery and wiped cache and dalvik cache, fix permissions, and rebooted, same thing right now. I did also go into Market in Manage Apps and cleared all data from Market.
it will say market @ first install and then will update to play shortly. If these fixes still don't work try to get a log cat

Eh, I wiped again and rebooted. Now it is updating and seems the universe is fine. Thanks
One of my gripes with ICS was the Browser not loading pages, or pages going blank, when doing anything with a form control like a text box or drop down menu... However, I loved that the bookmarks would sync with the ones I use in Chrome on my other PCs. Does something like this exist for GB?
Chrome to phone app, or mozzila can sync with firefox.
Applications (generlly speaking) are not firmware specific - what works on froyo works on gb works on ics.

Not sure if you understood what I meant. The browser app in ICS is very different from the one in GB. When you go into the Browser on ICS, you have "Local" bookmarks and "Network" bookmarks. The network ones sync with the same bookmarks that your Chrome desktop browser is syncing. Chrome to phone just pushes them to my phone, but it would have been nice to not have to manage the bookmarks separately on the phone. Minor concern really.

I'm running the latest version of Clockworkmod which looks like it is most likely my problem for constant force closes on all my apps but i'm wondering if i can downgrade clockworkmod version to fix this if rom manager and all my other apps keep force closing? Any suggestions would be VERY appreciated. Sorry if this is posted somewhere else also I tried a search but didn't see any solutions.
I think you and I might have the same problem going on. All of my apps are force closing, but I am not sure if mine has to do with clock work mod or not. I still have not found a solution to my problem.
This may seem obvious to you and I apologize if it does but, did you wipe data and cache prior to flashing MIUI? I was running it recently without any issues at all. And I keep the latest version of CWM. It's an excellent rom. Smooth as butter.
Edit: I was running MIUI 1.2.19 with invisiblek, #28, by the way.

There is some speculation that CWM3 isn't wiping as well as CWM2 did... I can certainly confirm that it does not seem to clean everything out for a new MIUI install. On MIUI forums you can find a script to wipe everything first, or you can just open the "mounts" section and manually format /boot and /system. This seems to do the trick.

I can't say I've had any issues, personally but, I've definitely seen several comments about this around the forums. I plan on flashing back to MIUI soon. Just to be safe, I'll be looking for that script before I do it. Thanks for the heads up.

The way I solved my mass force close issue was to do a factory reset and then flash the rom I wanted. Maybe that will solve your problem also?
I ended up just uninstalling and reinstalling an app a couple times and it started working just fine, another question though. What's the best version of miui? And also what are the miui ports for? New to this Rom but its pretty seemless

Alright so this is odd, just updated to 1.1.28.1 version and none of my apps whether from the market or SD card will work on the first install, I must uninstall then reinstall for them to work. Anyone else have this going on? I guess its not a HUGE deal but still just weird

It seems likely that cwr 3 is a pos that is causing all these issues. I have started manually wiping everything needed to be wiped in mounts and my problems went away. Another alternative is to go back to cwr 2.5

MIUI Ports are the current versions of MIUI. The person who was creating the Inc builds used to be NIX, but when he passed the torch to Warttack, they needed to call it something different in ROM Manager (different packager, different section I guess). So basically, you should always be using the latest in MIUI Ports.
Everything is force closing on my nook color cm7 SD card. I am not much of a techie...any help would be appreciated. thank you.
Try fix permissions in ROM manager. You should post this in the nook color forum though.

Some more details would be spectacular, such as which apps you're trying to use that give you that error. Do any other root apps work? What method did you use to root? Do you have the 'super user' app installed on your phone? When you boot to the bootloader, does it show Ship S off or Ship S on? What method did you use to flash the rom? Did you do it manually in recovery, or did you use ROM Manager?
When I boot to recovery it shows s-on. I don't remember the exact app name but it was used to manage power and cpu usage to boost performance. I used unrevoked root method found on xda.

Okay, you should be S off, not S on. Since you have custom recovery installed, you need to download the unrevoked forever s off tool, and flash it in recovery. Then boot back to your bootloader, and be sure that you're S off. At that point, I'd boot back to recovery, do a full wipe (data/factory reset, cache, dalvik cache, and flash calkulin's format all.zip), then reflash your rom. See if it works after that.
Much appreciated friend. To be continued.

Not a problem. And if you are on the newest version of clockwork recovery, you may not be able to flash that Calkulin's Format all.zip. You may need to flash King's format all zip instead, which I will attatch for you. Just remember, that after you flash either of the Format all.zip's, you need to flash a new ROM before you boot up. Once you flash the Format all.zip, everything geti's wiped, and you won't be able to boot up.
So instead of calkulins use kingsmod? Now.I don't wipe again one I use kingsmod do I?

Correct, they both do the same thing, except king's is edify compatible, which makes it gingerbread and clockwork 3.0+ friendly.
Also...kings black titanium is my first flashed rom. I like it...but I don't want to miss out on something better. http://goo-inside.me/gapps/latest/7/universal/ < gapps [google apps] you flash them in recovery after flashing a new gingerbread rom, its so that your market, gmail, ect installs and work. And CM7 offers a lot of customization, plenty of themes, ect. You can overclock your phone using setcpu or from settings > cyanogen mod settings > performance > cpu settings. The only real con is a few select apps don't have gingerbread support yet, like juice defender, I believe. And if you want to update your PRL, you have to flash a sense rom, update, flash back, but that's easy.
Okay so that zip file is the gapps for cm7 rom? Now is the cm7 fast and responsive and is it a gingerbread based rom? I've been doing this replying back and forth from my phone...havent done the research yet.

im running myns warm 2.2 i love sense i've been to cm7 and back a hundred times that with netarchy's 4.3.1 kernel is nice fast pretty decent battery life too but ya gotta give it day or so to see better life and lots of mods for myns too. id rather wait for gingerbread til someone other than cm to come out with one
New to XDA, first post ever. Has anyone tried the new Kingdom Sensless 3d release and if so can you tell me if youtube is working as well as 720p video recording? Tried to post this in the developer section under the proper thread but it wouldnt let me since im new. Would love to know overall thoughts on this release as well. Thank you!

I believe YouTube works with a workaround (wifi has to be on but not necessarily connected), but 720p isn't functional yet.
is my daily driver everything is working fine there is a lag on the 720 but the devs have explained that is do to the fact that they dont have the codes or something to build new kernels.. youtube works just fine... if you haven't try it yet just flash it... you wont regret it..
Sounds good. Thank you. And just to be sure, i boot into recovery, do a factory restore, wipe cache, then install the zip from sd card. Is that the proper method to install this or will that screw up my phone? Thanks again!

No you don't go back to stock before flashing, yes go to recovery do factory reset, then go to mounts and storage and wipe boot, system, data, cache go back under advanced & wipe dalvik. Now you can install your ROM

Thanks very much. Interestingly, when i go into recovery it brings me to a clockwork recovery screen where i cant do some of the things u mentioned. I only have the options to do a factory reset and wipe cash. Is that enough? Does it matter what order u do them in? I also noticed that in titanium backup there is an option to delete the dalvic from there. Is that ok to do?

Also, you can format system in the mounts and storage menu. The rom's install script should include this, but never hurts to be safe.
Here is my question, I like switching between two ROMs. I'm currently running Wildstangs stock ROM with the current Tiny's kernel. I installed CM7.1.0 also with the incredikernel ics+. All was fine with it then i switched back to my stock ROM for a few days but when i tried to switch back to CM7 it gets stuck at my custom boot image. I left it there for 30 minutes just to see if it would boot but nothing.
Now here is the question. Is there a particular way you have to switch between ROMs? As in the wiping process etc.
Thanks for your time.
Sent from my ADR6300 using xda premium
If you switch between two ROMs using a nandroid you shouldn't have to do anything special. If it fails it could be a bad backup. Try doing a full wipe before restoring just in case (format /system, data/factory reset).
Thanks for the info. I just don't like being stuck using one ROM. LOL
Sent from my ADR6300 using xda premium
Me neither. I would occasionally try the latest Sense 3 ROMs after being on CM7 for a while but ended back on CM7. But I'd hate to be stuck on one ROM. Even though I settled on CM9 pretty much on my Galaxy Nexus, I still want the option in case I want to switch as AOKP is my second choice.
I completely agree!

Anytime I download a new ROM I always check my md5 sums for a mismatch. I use md5 checker on my phone, cause you can corrupt the file transferring it to your phone if you used a computer to download it.
When doing a lot of switching, I definitely recommend to use VR_SUPERWIPE-edify. You just run it like you would a ROM in your recovery menu and it wipes everything for you. Makes switching go a lot quicker.

Try them all for a few days and make your decision; what's "good" for one isn't necessarily "good" for another due to each user using their device differently. That being said, I've heard good things about G-Lite.

Some that I can think of off the top of my head aimed more at battery/performance improvement:
G2 Slim : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1324616
EliteMod CM7 : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1246682
Though won't be much new changes to it since he's on EliteMod ICS now, which I love for the lightness/performance. Check the link in my signature if you want to try the ICS android version instead.
Virtuous G-Lite: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1349030
Kind of the long running 'light' rom for a while.
Ok
Ok so I decided I want to get the
Virtuous G-Lite ROM
But I'm new to all this and I dont understand what steps I should take and even what half of these words mean when I tried googling it
Can you please put me on the right direction ?
and will the Virtuous G-Lite support my UK Desire Z phone ?
Okay search for glite in the development forum and download the rom. It should be around 120mb. Then copy it to your sdcard. Don't put it inside any folder nor should you extract the zip file. Now reboot your phone into recovery and wipe data, cache, dalvik. Then choose the option to install zip from sdcard. Select the zip file which you copied earlier. After flashing reboot your phone. This information is based on the presumption that you have successfully attained root and s-off on your device.
EDIT: As you haven't rooted your phone yet I suggest you follow the link "minus" below in my signature. There download the appropriate pdf.

edit: I dont like go launcher pro it doesnt have the android notification bar

did you wipe everything before installing the rom? you may need to clear market data/cache

you flash a kernel the same way a rom, just flash rom then kernel. elitemod cm7 has both kernel and rom

Ohhh so when I try to install the ROM the kernel will be installed along side it right?! that means its going to be easier than I thought.
what is this super wipe?
yes, many roms come packaged with a kernel, some don't, some require extra packages such as gapps to be flashed as well. the link I sent you just need to flash the rom, all is bundled.
superwipe came about in the g1 days, orginaly by osaka. it runs a script to wipe your phone clean to help insure a good flash of the next rom. there are many variations but I suggest finding one that formats system/cache/data to ext4 as well as wipe
search for superipe+ext4 in the threads
and fyi fastboot -w is an even cleaner wipe but needs to be done at a computer and learn how to use fastboot

Yeah that bug happened to me, I tried to clear dalvik cache and then I updated the launcherpro then it randomly came. Is elitemod more easier and more customisable?what android version is it? Because on glite the battery life is brilliant but it feels like I'm sacrficing widgets (power control), the quick settings I had previously and the overal look is quite 'boring'
So with elite mod would I need to do any overclocking what so ever or anything else? And how can I make a back up of my current glite installion and revert back to it just incase elitemod doesn't work out for me
well your first step, just like when changing to any rom, is boot into recovery and make a backup. then you want to do a full wipe. then flash the next rom
nik3r has made a couple versions of elite mod, the one being suggested to you is based off of cm7 so its gingerbread, same as glite. it is slightly overclocked out of the box and has just about all the options avalible for a rom of its day, far more than glite. as for battery life, if you keep the oc/uv settings as they are you should get just as good battery life. I'm a moderate to heavy user and I do just fine with it
