I have been shopping around for plans to use on my GNex. I decided to go with T-Mobile's $30 unlimited data plan.
However, on the website, I don't see any link to purchase it. I've looked and looked. This is where I am stuck: http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/prepaid-plans. All I see is "Shop all phones". Do you have to buy a phone before being able to buy the plan? Really confused about this. Thanks.
Walmart
I believe that you can just order the sim and activate the plan when you get the sim delivered.

You can get the T-Mobile SIM card activation kit right from the T-Mobile Monthly4G web site for $1.99. Once you get the SIM in the mail there's a link to activate the card on the same site.

Buy here: http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/prepaid-phone/T-Mobile-Prepaid-SIM-Activation-Kit
Activate here: http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/prepaid-activate
DON'T go into a store. Waste of time. Activate online.
The SIM is plan agnostic. You can put any of their prepaid plans on it at any time, and you can change your plan at any time. It doesn't matter at the time of order. You choose when you activate what you want your first month's plan to be.
Sorry. Late on the draw. martonikaj has all the info.

Just hold onto it and use it later for another line or if you need to switch to another carrier and back.
actually you can also get this in the store -- they don't advertise it, but if you speak to them they might do it for you. i got the manager to do it for me. the benefit is they just give you the sim card for free then charge you $30 (plus tax) for the first month of prepaid credit. it doesn't really save you any money, but at least you don't have to wait for the sim card to arrive in the mail

Its a long shot to get it in store unless you want to buy a cheap burner phone with it. If you're willing to wait for the activation kit, you get some money pre-loaded on the account and you can choose to add your first $30 refill however you want (so you can get refills from somewhere like CallingMart (link in sig) and save some $$).
Activation
Ok, so I just received the sim card activation kit I ordered from t-mobile. I am still waiting on my Nexus to arrive. Can I go ahead and activate the sim card on the $30 plan, using an old t-mobile flip phone I have, and then when I get the nexus, just pop the sim card in it, and that's it? Also, if I want to port my current virgin mobile phone number to it, do I have to do that, during the activation process, or can I activate with the number they give me, then port my number over later? In case of multiple options, I am looking for the most problem free way. I have read about a lot of people having issues getting activated on the $30 plan, and also with porting.

You can activate with the flip phone IMEI and start the service then put in your GNex when it arrives.
You should be able to port when you activate, may have to do it over the phone though. I was able to port after activating, but I was also pulling the # from T-Mobile postpaid. YMMV.

I can get it unlocked for about $5.
You can get it unlocked by T-Mobile for free.
For customers with a Prepaid Plan, T-Mobile will provide the SIM Unlock Code upon request to eligible customers, provided the requesting customer has a minimum of 60 days of active service with T-Mobile and either a Prepaid Plan account balance of at least $10.00 or a prior refill within the last 30 days.

I just purchased 2 gs3's from Tmobile at retail price. Whatever you do, do not use cell-unlock-.com which is what Ive tried and which was advertised on this forum. They said they would do it for under $5 but they were so slow and at the end of me waiting 2 days, they did not deliver. After paying they said someone will email me with the code within 24 hours. After about 15 hours I received an email saying they could not retrieve the code automatically and would have to do it manually and they would get back to me within another 24 hours(personally I think they were just buying themselves another 24 hours because they suck). Well another 15 hours went by and finally I get an email from paypal with a refund lmao. They didn't even have the decency to email me an explanation. But atleast they gave my money back. Worst experience ever!
Anyway, I never had an account with tmobile. I called them up and asked for them to submit an unlock code request for the two phones. I faxed in a copy of the receipts and by the next day I had the codes in my email.
Let me ask you, you said you were going to use a prepaid plan, why not use simple mobile which runs on tmobiles towers. Just pop in sim and voila, you're good to go without unlocking. Thats what I did.....I went through all that trouble and did not need to unlock lol. But atleast I have the codes in case I want to switch carriers, but just saying if this is holding you up then hook up with simple mobile. Just my opinion, good luck.
Simple Mobile throttles or disconnects your data after u use 3gb of data or more... I have already tried them crooks. But I want to sim unlock a few phones that were purchased used. So calling tmo is not really an option for me. I did one already using cellunlocker but they are pricey at 24 bucks.

It's 70 total. I tried straight talk on att sim, for a few weeks but att data speeds on hspa + are not so good (compared to tmo) and I found it to be unreliable especially in NYC. As for throttling on straight talk. I don't know if that's an issue, I didn't get that far, but i have read that they do and I have read that they don't... Soooo, give them a try, only down side is that the Sims for straight talk is only available online.

Im switching from sprint and I plan on getting the S4 and using it on the $30 prepaid plan. I looked around and it appears the cheapest place to buy a T-mobile or unlocked S4 is from T-mobile for $630. Of course I tried to order it online and they want me to attach a plan.. I know theres a thread where most people bought it and then cancelled the plan immediately, but can I just go to a T-mobile store and buy it from them without signing up for a plan?
Thank you!

been a long time since I left XDA developers... purchased the i-phone 4 three years ago, and now own the Samsung Galaxy IV phone..
somehow, I knew that I would be pulled back into this forum..
I purchased my SGIV on release date Monday with t-mobile, surprised me the next day it arrived. Everything pre-loaded, sim, you name it
no hassle.
Honestly, I think T-mobile is the best out there right now then the other big three AT&T,Sprint, and Verizon is offering. Especially, not having to deal with a contract to break free from T-mobile.
Best bet is to purchase it on-line because many major metro areas will carry it vs. smaller cities..

I never succeeded in buying the phone outright, not even from their website. Got mine from Newegg, shipped to my door in less than 24 hours.
$695.99 + $9.99 next day shipping, didn't even charge me tax in CA.
Yup, I know from experience.
Ugh, that doesn't sound good. The models listed on Newegg do NOT sound like they support Tmobile 4g.

T-Mobile, as of now, won't sell an S4 unless you get a new plan.
The only way to get an S4 from a T-Mobile store is as follows:
Get the $50 plan and pay for the phone fully up front.
A day or two after, cancel the plan.
Go to a T-Mobile store and buy a new SIM activation kit for $10.
Activate the new SIM card on their website and select the $30 plan.
IMMEDIATELY, call T-Mobile and get them to combine your old account(the one with your phone #, not the one you just canceled) with the new one and make sure they keep your old number, the new plan, and change nothing else.
If you port your # to Google Voice, or don't care about losing your old number, then you don't need to do the last step.

I'm on prepaid - not even the $30/month prepaid but the 10 cents/minute prepaid. Of course, I don't get data but wifi is avail. most of the places I go - and if I really need data I pony up for the $3/day plan. Then switch back to 10 cents/minute plan before midnight. I really enjoy paying only ~$150/year for service. Anyway.
I Walked into the local T-Mobile store on May 15th, told them I was prepaid and wanted to buy it outright. They first rung it up for $659, but I reminded them they quoted me a price of $629 a few weeks before. They also went over to the display model - and sure enough it says $629 - so they changed it. I bought a D30 screen protector and case. They said I could get any other accessory of equal or or less value for free. They transferred my account to the micro-sim card for free and I was out the door. No hassles.
I had a similar experience buying the S3 last year in another local T-Mobile store. They both seemed happy to take my money and help me with a sim transfer even though I was prepaid.

I was thinking I could use a micro sim cutter to cut my current sim down to micro size, but maybe it would be easier and safer to just get a new micro sim. Only cumbersome part would be having to call Tmobile to cancel the old sim and transfer my current number to the new sim, presumably.

the best way to get it onto the prepaid plan is to do it all online, because the service reps have no clue what they are talking about 90 percent of the time
At one of T-Mo stores in my area they said I could get it for $690 + tax without a postpaid plan. At another store, they didn't have it in stock but told me it would be around $660.00 + tax. So I just went to Walmart and purchased the one they sell for the Family Mobile Plan for $629.99 + tax. Since that Family Mobile Walmart plan is powered by T-Mobile, my prepaid microsim worked right away. I did have to buy the $25.00 starter kit buy I returned it the next day.

That's a BS from Best Buy Cellular Department - they will ALWAYS try ANYTHING to "activate" something.
I got the same crap at Best Buy, even when I told the BB personnel that the N7 have an UNLOCKED version. He said nope. So in front of him, I pulled my laptop, BOUGHT the N7 unlocked for store picked up. Showed to him, and LOUDLY told him what I did in front of other customer.
The look at his face - priceless...
PS: I am using the N7 LTE with T-Mobile SIM card. The SIM card was bought directly from T-Mobile website when they were selling it for $0.99.

I said " No, I hate to say this but your prices for cases are extremely high." She agreed with me. The guy she asked fr help looked at something on a a monitor and said that this versiong had an att chip. I said "But its unlocked." She said that the register wouldnt let her go any further. I told her would just go back home and order it from there. She said that was probably a good idea.

After hassling and almost 30 minutes bypassing some BS about activation, from the associate. I was able to get it. AFAIK, there is a way to get it, without having to activate a plan.
Just order from Bestbuy.com and choose store pick-up.
BB get commission for each activation, just like non-corporate cellphone stores, so they'll say anything to get you to sign-up.
And BB is wondering why they are losing against online retailer...
I must have been lucky. I didn't have to deal with the hard sell when I bought mine. I just showed them the SKU for the unlocked Nexus 7 LTE from my phone and told them I needed it for my T-mobile data sim and they just rang it up for me. They didn't even try to force the extended warranty on me once I told them I didn't want it.
I heard that the t mobile nexus 7 lte that just came out 11-20 has the bootloader already unlocked. Does anyone know if this is true?
Thankyou!

Ah, that's the "secret" - showing them the SKU.

T-Mobile? Why bother with it? Just get the UNLOCKED N7 LTE. This is the SAME ONE as the ones sold by Google from Google Play. It's unlocked - SIM and bootloader.
I did as advised and I am happy. I purchased online and went back to the same store 65 miles away. I know that crazy but i am off this weekend and want to play with it. No muss , no fuss. In and out. Then drove back to my town and had it activated. Of course tmobile has an over sell too. They said they are adding a 2.5 gb plan for the first month for free and then i can cancel. So I figured yea what the hell I have enough sense to cancel a plan. Thats what calendars are for. Plus the one day wait allowed me to cath it on sale for 319. So maybe I broke even on the gas. Thanks for the great advice!

I just picked this up from Best Buy. How do I know if the bootloader is unlocked?

I haven't heard of one coming unlocked from the factory, but it's very easy to unlock it yourself. You can use WugFresh Nexus Root Toolkit, or as I do it, use "fastboot oem unlock" from a command line (once you have fastboot downloaded and the proper drivers installed).
Note that unlocking wipes all user data...
ATT has really screwed around with their plans and phone upgrades.
They want to boost the "access" charge on the share plans and after you add up the price for the phone charge and the upcharge it's closing in on $975 to get the 64GB phone.
Anyway to do any better than this?

I'm leery of Swappa.
What happens when the phone gets banned by ATT for the orig buyer not fullfilling the contract or reporting it stolen?

He can't report stolen because you have proof of purchase from PayPal. Swappa is checking if phone is under contract or not. If it is under contract you not allowed to post for sale. Read this : https://swappa.com/faq
I personally buying and selling on swappa and never had problems.

I would, but doing that changes my plan radically because of the upgrade.

I wouldn't worry too much on AT&T. They aren't like T-Mobile. If someone stops paying off a phone on AT&T, they don't blacklist the phone. Instead they ding the persons credit and go after them that way. T-Mobile does it different and will blacklist the phone.

That is just what I've always been told. But definitely don't take it as gospel as I've never experienced being blacklisted myself.

BTW.. IF you get phone and go at&t store with PayPal receipt and register phone on your account how someone who you get phone from can blacklisted? You legally purchased phone and now is register on your account. Other person have no access to it anymore as he is not owner.
If you want to pay full price, I would say go for t mobile note 5, cheaper and much better as bootloader unlocked, you have chance of getting root or flash rom for faster update.
If you still want at&t note 5, keep eye on bestbuy deals for samsung phones on at&t next plan, on this plan you have to pay for phone in installments over period you decide. In a similar deal at time of launch of note 5, I got $200 for trading in a smartphone (which I purchased on ebay for $30), $45 for getting the phone on at&t next and wireless charger as promo deal. I went for 30% downpayment ($222) + tax on full price ($59.2) and paid with gift cards I got and remaining 36.2 with my credit card. The rest $518, I am paying in installments over 28 months (Which I can pay anytime and get my device unlocked). Basically I got phone for $554, which was sweet deal for me. You will still have to pay $15 activation fee, which is $45 (I guess) for on contract phone.

You got phone for $30(old phone from ebay)+$222 (down payment)+$518 (for 28 months) = $770. Unless I got my math wrong...
I got my phone from swappa for $540, phone was never activated. Brand new.

I don't think you understand what I am talking about. Lots of people have had this problem. If the contract is not paid off, the person who sold the phone did not own it, get it? AT&T owns it till it is paid off.

I don't want to do any type of upgrade on my account. I went to upgrade my phones with ATT after fulfilling my last contract and I am getting all kinds of BS about upping the price of my current share plan. That's what started this is their "new" policies about not really providing subsidized phones anymore.

You got it wrong
I paid $30 for phone from ebay + $222 down payment + $59.2 tax + $518 for 28 months - $200 gift card for trade in - $45 giftcard for getting phone on at&t next - Wireless charger ( which I think is worth $30) = $554.2
I used gift card to pay for down payment and tax

At&t next is different than getting phone on contract. Right now my phone is not on 2 year contract, I am paying $15 for line (and $80 for share data plan), if I have got it on contract that would have raised that to $40.
If you are on very old type of plan, those you can not get now then you shouldn't go with at&t next.

I think I am on the same plan as you but I have 3 phones on it at $15 per. I read the fine print and if I upgrade, they raise that to $40. I have 10GB shared data plan.
For my Note 3 I bought a T-mobile and a $10 plan and swapped out SIM card. Rooted, etc, etc
Trying to figure out how to go now as cheap as possible without getting a Blacklisted phone. and screwing up my Plan.

No. If you paid in full even from third party you own it. At&t is charging person who you purchased phone full price or remaining of balance on phone on next bill. I had exactly this situation. I purchase phone and ask at&t for unlocking sim card code. Phone was not paid in full and they did not want me to send it. Then I get my pay pal receipt and go to at&t store, present them that I purchase this phone from third party. They switch phone to my account and told me they will charge account that phone was buy on for remaining balance. I get my unlocking code two days later. They told me that phone is on my account and is paid in full according to my account.

Glad it worked out for you. Others have had different experiences, thus my questions.
Some people don't complete contract, report phone stolen, sell it, , IMEI/ESN is blacklisted.
