Clockwork Mod Recovery no longer working, stumped... - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hi all,
Basically, I went to install S-voice (Samsungs Siri competitor) and it worked fine. I did it the proper way by putting it in the system/app folder and then changing the permissions (rw-r-r), rebooted and then installed the apk (while in the system/app folder). I did rename the apk to svoice.apk instead of voicetalk.apk (before I put it in the system/app) but I don't think that could've changed anything.
While installing it said it was going to modify system apps, fair enough. I used it, didn't like it and went to uninstall it, but when I went to uninstall it, all it said was "Uninstall updates" I clicked this and it was then uninstalled, then it said it was returning the system apps back to stock, and then I deleted the file from the system/app folder.
From there I decided I want to just flash back to a previous recovery, but upon launching CWM, everytime I try to launch recovery it loads and then freezes with the Dead Android Symbol. I can only imagine I didn't uninstall svoice properly which modified the system apps somehow causing it to mess up my CWM? I can launch my bootloader, root is still intact, I just cannot launch recovery.
Any help would be greatly appeciated, I have my nandroid backups but I have no idea who I can flash them if I can't get into recovery.
Oh and I'm running a VZW G-Nexus with 4.0.4 (Rooted, unlocked bootloader, stock rom) I also have the latest version of CWM 5.5.0.4
Thanks

Try flashing cwm again.

The android on its back is the stock recovery.
If you used the update file to update to 4.0.4, then CWM was replaced by the stock recovery.
Every OTA update zip adds two files to your ROM that re-flash the stock recovery on EVERY boot.
You need to delete those files. They are:
/system/etc/install-recovery.sh
/system/recovery-from-boot.p
After you delete them, re-flash CWM.

Hey Efrant, Thanks for the reply, you've answered all of my questions before!
With that said, I thought I deleted, I actually think I renamed the recovery-from-boot to recovery-from-boot.bak so as to circumvent this (back when I had 4.0.2) I then installed 4.0.4 as update.zip from within CWM and then used Voodoo OTA rootkeeper. After I did this I then made a nandroid back-up from within CWM. (Or maybe I'm just confusing myself more).
Thanks for the tips, I'll look into this and then I will update accordingly.

Those files do not exist on stock ROMs. They are placed there by OTA updates. The thing is, EVERY OTA update will place those files on your system, regardless of whether you deleted them before or not. Every time you upgrade your ROM, those files will be re-placed by the update zip.

Ahhh, got it. Flashed over CWM and was able to boot into recovery and flash a nandroid back-up. Unfortunately, it was of 5.0.2 so then I had to install update.zip reflash CWM then make another back-up.
Thanks again!

[Q] tmobile OTA and rooted phone

i have a T989, rooted, Clockwork Mod, and installed some stock Android (sans bloatware) MOD.
i had updates set to automatic and am now being bugged to install the new TMobile update, which doesn't seem to be able to install with Clockwork, and i can't turn off the persistent Update prompts.
i've already bricked one GS2, and obviously fear doing it again. I wouldn't get another chance, i don't think. (i do have insurance on the phone, not sure if it would cover a rooted phone?)
what can someone tell me about the TMobile update and Clockwork, or whatever i need to do, go with the update or stop it somehow...?
thanks for your help.
Ota update requires stock recovery.
Grab one of the updated stock roms and flash via cwm. Then Odin the new baseband.
Sent from my SGH-T989
i think i have one of those stock roms - i chose one that was just 'the same thing but without some of the standard apps'. how can i check to see what rom i have...?
and what do you mean by baseband? the new update? is it already dl'd to my phone? i've searched through the phone's dirs (rooted File Explorere, i guess) and could not find anything...
sorry to be a pain - i can't brick another one, of course... (
is this what you mean by a 'stock updated rom':

No, look for the KL1 release.
Baseband is your radio btw. Don't worry about the radio for now, just work on getting the rom flash.

ok, found Deodexed_KL1_T989 (T989UVKL1 by Whitehawkx) is that what i'm looking for? -
couple of questions:
he says on the post:
"DONT FLASH - add files to the zip in the app folder, then flash. Or usb connect drag to sd the use some rooted file explorer to place in system/app then reboot."
Flash or don't Flash? I'm transferring the zip to sd now, then i need to move it to system/app...?
once i've 'flashed' what do you mean "Odin the baseband"? i have Odin, used it last time...
thanks

I flashed the ROM, now i have 2.3.6, and now i'm stuck with 2 OTA notifications, one states postponed, and choosing START for the update does nothing.
help?
I had the base load on mine with a bunch of stuff frozen and Clockwork on it (plus root)
I first unfroze all the stuff I had frozen, then ODIN'd back the stock recovery. Didn't touch anything else, then told the OTA to go ahead.
It updated just fine -- removed root of course. I then ODIN'd back the clockwork recovery and re-installed SU, then re-froze all the boatware.
Done in about 15 minutes -- no muss, no fuss, didn't lose anything.

for some reason Odin doesn't recognize my phone in download mode, but it does when i'm connected and the phone is on... any reason for this? i don't use odin in any means but download mode, right?

You can probably clear this up by formatting /system in CWM. Then wiping cache and dalvik. Then flash the FL1 update. Hit advance, fix permissions and then reboot.

Gnex tool, ClockworkMod Recovery and 4.0.4

Hey guys,
So I used the GNEX tool to update my GSM Galaxy Nexus to the latest 4.0.4, all smooth, all perfect, I now have a rooted 4.0.4 but without clockwork RecoveryMod.
I read somewhere that OTA patches remove the modded recovery (obvious) and also each subsequent reboot it flashes stock recovery back. I had read I must delete the file from /system called "recover-from-boot" and another one that seems to be missing, however I have "recover-from-boot" and "recover-from-boot-old" is it cool if I just delete these two and flash CWM recovery again and it should be fine or should I take any sort of precaution and find the other file (which I can't recall) and then go ahead with the flash.
Thanks
I think it would be fine to delete those files and permanently flash CWM (since google has the stock recoveries on their website). But flashing a custom recovery will not allow you to receive the next OTA fyi...

really? I did not know that, thanks for that information - but as long as I can manually flash to the next OTA that should be cool I guess !

sprint ota on rooted phone

I keep getting notified that an update is available. I know it is the one that nukes unified search, so I don't want it.
How do I get the notifications to stop, without installing it. Also what would happen if i accepted it on my rooted phone, would it brick the phone, or unroot it, or something in between?

You can't accept it rooted with custom recovery. If you have custom recovery you have to flash back the stock recovery, and I think you can flash the zip file located in the developer forum. You can get universal search back by then re-rooting, and re-installing CWM recovery. Download the apk for universal search found here: http://forums.androidcentral.com/sprint-galaxy-s-iii/187903-update-2-l710vplg2-2.html#anb
Then you will need to put the new apk file in your system/app folder (not sure it matters what you name it but to be save name it the same as the current one in there and delete the old one or just make it a .bak file). Then reboot. I think it will install automatically on reboot and you will get the functionality back. You may have some permission issues, if you do then you need to boot into CWM recovery and run fix permissions.
To answer your original question I don't know how to stop the annoying update reminder.
I believe it some you have to edit in the updater script for a permanent solution

I just accepted the update because I was planning on replacing the Google Search .apk afterwards anyway... when my phone rebooted into CWM and the update failed I just rebooted my phone and I have never had any update notification again (fingers crossed)
Install the rom(odexed or deodexed is your choice) through CWM

Then install this APK after

Thanks for the help. I will probably just put up with the notifications until Saturday. Then try out one of the other roms.

[Q] 4.2 Upgrade Problems-- verizon gnex

My vzw nexus has been running mRom version x.x for sometime. I went to install the upgraded 4.2 rom via clockworkmod, (wipe cache and dalvik, flash over current rom) and it appeared to install successfully. However, when I rebooted I saw the lock screen for a split second and it just started to boot loop. I rebooted back into recovery and wiped all data and tried to reinstall the rom via through the new 0 partition, but I get the error symlink: some symlinks failed
E: Error in /sdcard/0/mRom_v3.0_JOP40C.zip (status 7)
I think that this may have something to do with the multiple users in 4.2, but don't quote me on it. I cannot get my computer to recognize my phone, when I go to mounts in cwm I can mount everything except the sdcard, although I think this problem was evident before I flashed. Any suggestions? I could try to restore to stock using galaxynexusrestore-- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1743939 but I have not tried it before so I cannot speak to weither it will work or not.
HELP!
Always always wipe data when changing an Android version. Unless it comes via OTA, which is specifically designed to fix all the little problems that will arise.
As to how to fix the problem, flashing a factory image
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1626895 will probably work. Just follow the rules for Toro. The toolkit you linked may work, but it's generally a better idea to not use them and actually familiarize yourself with how to fix things yourself, you'll be less likely to make mistakes in the future.
Same thing happened to me.
when i try to restore from backup Clockwork can't locate the backup file because the root file structure has changed to \0.
Is there an update to Recovery that fixes this?
Help!

Clockwork dev said he knows about the issue and is working on a fix.
TWRP already has a patch out that solves the problem. If you decide to temporary move to TWRP it can be flashed through fastboot or Goomanager. CWM and TWRP backups are not compatible however.
http://teamw.in/androidmultiuser useful reading for how TWRP fixed it.
same problem, stuck at JB logo

I was running stock JRO03O with Clockwork Recovery Mod and decided to flash the JB 4.2 ROM from Grouper (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1993545 - I can't post there since I'm too new).
The update must have succeeded, because I can see the new 0/ partition on my phone, but it won't boot past the "X" logo. I can boot into CWM and try various things, but of course because of the data structure changes, I can't actually recover to my last save. When I'm home, I'm hoping I can get the CWM backup off my phone to restore later, but without a terminal in CWM, I can't try to fix the path.
It's nice to hear that CW is working on a fix - I hope it's retroactive (I mean, helpful to those of use who already screwed up). Also, I've never flashed anything but OTA, so I didn't realize I needed to wipe data before flashing something that's supposed to be almost stock. I guess it matters how different from stock the ROM actually is.
What's next? I'll try to interface with my PC at home. If others have this problem, I'd be happy to hear your success (or fail) stories. I'll share mine once I've tried it.
The issue with non-OTA version updates is that the OTA is specifically designed to know what little bits and pieces need to be updated, removed, or left alone.
Flashing a ROM is usually intended as a fresh slate, as the dev cannot know exactly from where you started. Basically without the wipe, you could end up with old files loitering about the system and making it do things incorrectly at boot.
Koush
When trying to restore CWM backup move previous backups AND blobs folder to /data/media/clockworkmod if the folder does not exist simply create one or if unsure just go to recovery and make new backup, it will create necessary folders for you then move (or copy to be safe) files to location.... The blobs folder is what I was missing and why I kept getting error while trying to restore.

This should help your problem solving for the moment, if you're familiar enough with ADB to move the files that way it shouldn't take very long at all
thanks, and update of my status

Thanks for the extra insight. I wrestled with my phone all night and finally got it back to 4.1.1 (JRO030). Along the way I screwed up my adb or fastboot drivers, and for all my efforts I couldn't get any of my nexus toolkits to recognize the phone as in fastboot mode. Adb was fine, but fastboot was a no-go. I moved to a fresh computer after someone else had success with that, and read up on how to do a manual (adb command line) flash to factory image.
Now that that's done, I'm hoping I can restore from CWM to get back to where I was. If not, then yuck, but I'm optimistic.

[Q] 4.2.2 OTA "Error"

My phone prompted me today that an update to 4.2.2 was available.
Its a takju Nexus running with an unlocked bootloader and rooted but otherwise stock rom.
I've tried to get it to do the update, however it reboots to a screen saying "applying system update" then after a few seconds flicks to a screen with an android with an exclamation mark, and the word Error below.
Is this because i'm rooted? or is there something else going on?
Thanks
Kevin
Extra root files shouldn't cancel out the OTA, however, overwriting system files, or modifying system files will. For example installing busybox on system/bin, modifying etc/host etc. Installing mods and replacing apps on /system may also be the culprit.
Just flash the system.img over your current system, also make sure you're running the corresponding recovery, radio, kernel, and bootloader that came with your takju factory image. Do that and and try the OTA again, should work. If the OTA doesn't show up this time, you can download it from the OTA links thread and sideload it via ADB.
Alternatively you can install a custom recovery directly from your phone, back up all of your apps with TB, and flash Bigxie's 'stock' 4.2.2 if you don't have access, or don't want to mess around with a computer. Of course you won't get direct OTA updates from Google that way, but since he usually update his build pretty quick that shouldn't pose much problem.
I'm unable to update to 4.2.2 as it says "couldn't download". Not sure what's going on here.
P.S : I don't mean to hijack this thread.

Try clearing Google Services Framework's data+cache maybe? Or try in a couple hours, the problem could be in the server.

Just to confirm, if i flash the system.img over my current system, will that delete all my installed apps/data? Which system.img should i be flashing? the one from 4.2.1?
Is there a list somewhere of the version numbers for the various parts (recovery, radio, kernel and bootloader) so i can check they are correct?
Also, is there a way i can flash the OTA update with some error logging or debug output turned on, so i can see what its actually failing at?
Cheers
Yes, the one from 4.2.1, check under Maps > Settings > About, it should gives you the version you're currently running, download it from the factory images page if you haven't already, and no, it should not wipe any apps+data, but back it up anyway if you're worried, better safe than sorry, I'm generally paranoid about data so I always backup, but no it shouldn't wipe anything. You'll lose root and that's it.
And for the bootloader and all that, it all should come all packaged on the factory image, so if you flash 4.2.1 via toolkit, or manually and haven't installed any radio or kernel you should be safe. IIRC, the bootloader version is PRIMELC03, the radio is XXLH1.
