[Q] Big Thanks and some questions about Supernova ROM - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone!
First of all sorry for opening a new Thread, but I am not yet able to post to the ROM Thread directly :-/
I want to thank everyone involved in the creation/development of the Supernova ROM, because I am thrilled with what it gave me!
I struggled with the memory limitations of my Desire over a year until I decided to give rooting and custom ROMs a chance and the first rooted stock GB ROM with APP2SD+ Support gave me much more space than I ever had before, but as you may suspect already it did not hold for long, so I searched for a more drastic solution and stumbled upon the Supernova ROM!
Clear and precise installation instructions, easy installation and now I got rid of the memory restraints once and for all! Thank you again for that!
Never the less I have two questions regarding the ROM and I hope someone can answer these for me!?
I am using 4EXT Recovery and excluded Cache and Dalvik from the backup to save some space, but I read the warning about wiping cache and/or dalvik so I am wondering whether I should disable the exclusion or not!?
Second thing is that the Android Market App does not Update to the latest Google Play and I am wondering whether I can do anything about it!?
Thanks in advance for your help!
Regards,
Guido

You will have to download the Play Store manually because, I used SuperNova rom some time ago and it does not allow market update because new play store is slow.
Here you can download play store

Yes, you should be including cache and DK in your backups. Otherwise the restored backup wouldnt have your app data.
Market update is blocked in my Rom, so as mentioned, you should backup the rom, and flash a Market zip manually. I'm still using the old Market which I included in the Rom.

Well, good that I asked before making a Nandroid Backup
Are there any disadvantages in using the "old" Market?
And one other question! Speed with all Data on the SD is ok, it is a 16 GB Class 4 Sandisk with a 1.5GB ext4 Partition! Is it safe to use Apps like SD-Booster to try out different read-ahead values? What would you recommend?
Also is there a short explanation / recommendation when one should use the DalvikOptimizer.zip?
Thanks again!

Guido

Why is that? And what about manually increasing the readahead?
Regards,
Guido

Change the line:
Code:
readahead=256
in the file /system/etc/init.d/01data to the value you like for readahead. 256 is 256KB. The effect of changing the value is different for each sdcard. You'd have to experiment on your own to find a comfortable value.

Use whatever you want. You asked a qn about the rom, and I was explaining what was built into it. If you wish to use an app to do the same thing, be my guest.

I only asked about this because the user "race55" said that using SD Booster would be bad and therefore I liked to have a statement from the ROM Developer, because I trust your opinion more!

May I ask another question?
Due to low RAM the task Htc Sense got killed very often! I took your advice and disabled unnecessary events with Autostarts!
Isn't it possible to just prevent Htc Sense from being killed?
Thanks!

It shouldnt be killed if the foreground task and Sense combined require RAM <= Free RAM. There are some scripts which allow you to tweak these settings. Search for Supercharger.

[Q] Couple of newbie questions :)

Phk said:
Greetings fellow Friends from Galaxy
I just moved myself from the HTC Magic section to this one.. It was quite a jump, the Galaxy S Camera and 4inch screen are AWESOME =)
I have a few noob questions that I don't want to spread through many posts, so i've chosen to get them all here, without polution this forum section. Also they might come in handy for future Galaxy S buyers!
My phone is: 2.1-update1 @ I9000XXJF5
Question #1
Well at first glance everyone's trying to fix the "LAG PROBLEM"... I haven't noticed any lag!! What are we talking about? If its a fix.. i want it too
Click to collapse
the lag problem does not accure instantly after startup, it takes a while to do so.
Question #2
The phone came with Android 2.1, but at samsung-firmwares.com and at this dev section of the forum, i saw the JP3 Froyo release. How stable is this? Is it already a daily driver or a total beta? As an Android lover, i'd love to have the latest
Click to collapse
this release is, lets say, alpha quality, however some do use it daily and seems to be stable so far, but the jit is broken, so dont expect it to be faster than eclair
Question #3
I've used the One Click rooting solution and then the ROM Manager Clockwork to boot into clockwork rom and make a full-system backup. In my HTC Magic i had the recovery ROM (Amon_RA) flashed into the internal phone memory, so even if i didn't have a ROM installed, i was ALWAYS able to boot into recovery. That was a safety plus. How can i flash the Clockwork Recovery directly to my phone, without the ROM Manager? I'd feel more secure if i could count on recovery even if, for example, i flashed a non-working system ROM.
Click to collapse
you can run the clockwork recovery from original recovery by simply running it´s update.zip, this does in fact load the clockwork recovery into memory
Question #4
So what is YOUR favourite ROM? My stock has some unwanted apps, and even worse, it's Eclair. I'd like to switch soon, but i don't know these Galaxy S ROMs Tell me what's the best ROM for you!
Thanks guys, XDA is indeed the #1 place for mobile stuff
Cheers

If JIT is broken, the rest of new 2.2 features can be achieved through Market tools... I'll stick to 2.1 then. By the way, where's a CLEAN 2.1 Rom? this one has lots of service-provider tools... They suck.
FadeFx said:

Now That's a fix! So i just have to keep my update.zip of Clockwork Rom in INTERNAL SD CARD so that anytime, anywhere, i just have to perform update.zip and the Clockwork will boot ONCE from RAM and them be cleared at next boot, right?

[Q] app2sd - Introduction

Hey guys!
As the title says, I would love an introduction to app2sd so i don't make any mistakes..
Frist i installed a script from Darktremor, but i showed out to be for Nexus1.
Therefore I installed another one, but deleted that again because suddenly i only had 2,7GB, when I i used to have 4GB..
Well now I have 3,7. therefore I don't think i have deleted one of them completely!
is there a way to delete it?
And also, what app2sd should i use? Please help, as I would like to get this solved so i just can enjoy my phone and the CM9 Bravo ROM
So this i the things I need to know:
Which app2sd shall i use?
Can I delete a script? If yes, how?
//velein
Sorry, if my english has some mistakes. I'm Danish.

Which type of a2sd you use is dependant on the ROM you wish to install and the a2sd support provided by the ROM. If you wish to use the Bravo CM9 ROM, read the OP for that ROM. In this case is is referred to as Mounts2SD

Again, read the relevant para in the CM9 thread!
If you already have a different version installed, you really need to start with a full wipe before installing the ROM

Custom ROM recommendation needed

Hi guys!
My daughter and I are utter newbies at the rooting game - but we did succeed in getting her HTC Desire (European, GSM version) Sed-OFF and rooted. After the blood sweat and tears involved in getting the thing rooted, I didn't think finding a suitable ROM was going to be very challenging. How wrong I was!
We've tried 3-4 different custom ROMs so far, but we're not really finding what she needs.
Goals:
1) Less bloatware.
2) Applications go to the SD-card, so she doesn't run out of space so incredibly quickly. (I know there a lot of ways to skin that cat. Any one is fine!)
3) Tight integration with daughter's Google account. (Like vanilla. For example, we've discovered that CyanogenMod is setup to integrate with exchange accounts. I'm sure that's great for someone, but not for her ... )
4) Google Play already installed and easy to get working.
5) If possible, HTC Sense.
Doesn't seem all THAT difficult ...
I can assure you pretty much all roms will have close integration wiwh your google account.
The index sticky on the development forum provides a list of all existing roms for desire.

These 3 are quite recommended for your goals (in no specific order):
Supernova
AN-Droid
Cool Droid
Or, if you can live without sense, try the ROM in my sig.
All of them are ROMs you can install and don't look back anymore after a bit of personal tweaking. It might require installing other hboots and setting up sd-ext partitions, though.

Actually, my daughter is trying out the MIUI version at the moment, and likes it pretty well. It's not actually the Sense UI, but it's very nice looking.
Unfortunately, we seem to be having a problem getting a2sd working. We installed the S-OFF and recovery tool from http://revolutionary.io/ - it seemed to be the latest thing going. It loads this: ra-desire-v2.0.1. We have used it successfully to flash the various custom mods, and we carefully followed instructions in setting up an EXT3 partition (size 1gb). However, the partition isn't mounting and can't be used by a2sd. I even get an error message when I try to mount it in recovery mode.
Bother.
mite i suggest this recovery, it is the best in everyway and partitions ur sdcard perfect.(dont forget to backup first). just download and install the updater app then open it and flash recovery. simples

Hi, this is the daughter!
Thanks, this recovery really works better and is a lot easier to handle!
We successfully partitioned the SD card again and now have about 1GB on it. However, we're confused about a couple of things, can you help us with them?
When we reinstalled MIUI (miui-ger_DESIRE_2.4.6_FULL_EN_DE.zip) all of the apps that were built into the custom ROM went directly to the internal storage and can't be moved.
Some of the new apps I installed (AirDroid, BubbleUPnP, Alchemy Classic) went either directly to the SD card or I could at least move them there, the others (YouTube, SwiftKey 3) did not and I can't move them either.
OP, I suggest reading the rules on future before posting around this site.

Since you liked MIUI I might recommend you a customized edition
Look here.
Tip: The "X-PART" version is the one you're looking for. It maps the internal storage to /ext partition on your card, so you'll see your 1g there under Settings - Apps.
Hope it helps.

Hello KidCarter93,
This is the Dad again - and please accept my sincerest apologies. I tried hard to do this right, but I seem to have messed up. I 've been using internet forums/email lists for 20 years now, I appreciate them deeply, and I don't want to behave abusively.
In my defense, my daughter and I spent DAYS searching the forums, reading and trying to figure stuff out before bothering you guys. But we're new to Droid modding, and it all got a little overwhelming ...

Um ... yet another question: We just downloaded this:
MIUI_XJ_D2EXT_X-PART_2.3.30_2.3.7_GS_3P_Final_Not_Signed_cdvfg15236.zip
I think I've got the right one - but there is a mind boggling number of versions and variants in there!
P.S. I honestly thought getting S-OFF and root was going to be the big challenge - a perfect of father-daughter vacation project on my old cell phone. It never crossed my mind that simply choosing a new firmware was going to be so brutally confusing!)
P.S. That X-PART recovery was like night and day. Wish I'd found that a long time ago!

YES!! It worked!!!
My daughter (15) goes back to school tomorrow with a successful project behind her. She'll have a free phone with space for as many apps as she can find - and a new feel for the the gizmo she uses. I did most of the forum writing (English is not her mother tongue), but she did most of the reading, downloading and general work.
Thanks for your help and patience.

No, not yet. I was waiting for some advise. Actually the reason why I want to root it is mainly the poor battery life. I'm hoping to freeze some unnecessary apps and processes. Anyway thanks for the hint. I was planning on trying One Click Root.
From my experience one click root does not work on chiniese phones (at least those which i got). GL - i hope you have some succes!
