Stupid question time. If my phone is vanilla Arc S unlocked to all networks (unbranded) is that the same as not having a locked bootloader or is that something entirely different? Excuse me if I seem thick over this point.

So in order to flash some ROM's I have to lock the already unlocked bootloder? Bit confusing when some say I have to lock the bootloader you see.
Maybe I should rephrase the question. Is a bootloader lock the same as a sim lock? In some instances they say in order to do OTA you need to re-lock the bootloader. Since mine never had a 'sim' lock does this even matter?
Well this is confusing.

Especially the last couples of replies.
Sim lock and bootloader lock are different thing. If ur sim is unlocked, the phone still have a possibility to be locked.

Its simple really if you have a phone with an unlocked sim it should have an unlock able bootloader, in that case the reason you want to unlock your boot loader is so you can flash a custom kernel. If you have a locked boot loader you can't do that.
A lot of custom roms require a custom kernel to work. If you are new to loading custom roms go look at one of the many guides before you proceed. Because there aren't shortcuts to get it Working.
Unlocking your bootloader may void your warranty.

I know that the bootloader of defy is locked. I ve heard that Quarx is going to unlock it in the next version!!! Is it real??
Has anyone unocked the bootloader?????
Bootloaders can be unlocked usually by brute force method..... If the bootloader of defy is unlocked then its great news not only for defy users but for other moto users as it will help break the encryption of other phones.
NAH!!
What you tell is rooting........I m asking about unlocking it permanently...!!!!
nope its about bootloaders only.. Lol if its unlocked its unlocked.
Rooting is just a simple process of granting user access to restricted parts of the software.
A bootloader is different. Its the first thing that starts and it activates the kernel after checking and matching the kernel...like a security pass. Sorry if i am wrong but this is a general idea and i am not wellversed with this knowledge..
How can quarcx unlock the bootloader? What would be the benefit, we have 2ndinit.

he is not going to unlock the bootloader.
the french gay just found an bug in the bootloader, it doesn't check the signature in some specific condition.
Quarx is going to use it to make the cm7 in the form of sbf.
this action doesn't means he can unlock the bootloader and do everything he wants.

If I put another sim card it asks for Sim network unlock PIN. How can I unlock it?
Thanks
Im on 3 and UK there is no way to unlock it except from a code mate. I pm'ed u

There must be a way around this, it is software issue, I thought the lock was in firmware, but if not, where can it be? is it in bootloader? Or I flashed wrong firmware?

Now I'm really intrigued, why is it not possible? Can anyone explain this?
If XDA wizards have access to firmware source, why they can't remove this lock from there?
Or I know for sure that unlocked smartphones exist, why not to take firmware from them?
This is not a hardware feature (or is it?), so it should be possible to overcome this, am I wrong?
SIM/network locking has nothing to do with firmware/software, hence you can flash any firmware onto any phone and maintain your (un)lock.
It's a lower-level software lock on the radio which is loaded before any firmware.
Think BIOS password on a PC. It locks the PC regardless of what operating system you have on it and is loaded before any OS.
Carrier-branded phones also cannot be bootloader unlocked at the moment, but there aren't any custom ROMs yet so it's not a big issue.
@BluechipJ
Thanks for reply,
Do you mean this is done in the bootloader? I know it is possible to unlock bootloader.
And what do you mean by carrier-branded phones? this phone doesn't have any logos on it. There was carrier splashscreen and a couple of apps but they are gone now after I flashed generic firmware. Is my phone still branded or not?
It is not branded but sim-locked now.

No, the radio/network/SIM lock is separate and independent from the bootloader and any firmware.
Carrier-branded means the phone had carrier apps/logo/is sold directly by the carrier. My Rogers arc does not have any physical logos either. It had Rogers applications and splash but like yours, are now gone since I flashed a generic firmware. However, it is still a carrier-branded phone. It was sold directly by a carrier. The bootloader is therefore, locked and cannot be unlocked (yet).
You can go to the Sony Ericsson site (http://unlockbootloader.sonyericsson.com/) and get your unlock key, but there is no way to get into Fastboot mode to enter it (on carrier-issued phones).
Thanks for the explanation.

I just thought the other brand(s) of android phones is not as secure as this, that we need to pay for an unlock code. Others can just be sim-unlocked by software!
You can unlock the Phone using the Unlock code,You can get the Unlock code from the site www.theunlockspot.com and unlock it..Then you can use in any Country GSM Carriers.
No! It is possible to unlock the phone with proper simlock.ta cuz I have locked it by flashing it. God damn it!
So it is possible to vice versa.

So, Did you have success???
I'm kinda new to Xperia Play, I'm a proud owner of a Xperia Arc.
Nevertheless, the Play in question is Rogers sim-locked, I'm from Brazil, and I want to use a "Vivo" sim on the phone.
My question is: If I simply flash a default firmware via flashtool on my Play, I'll be able to use another carrier sim or i'll need to pay for the unlock code in a third-party site.
Thanks in advance.
You'll need the unlock code, flashing firmware wont help you. However you could also opt to get your bootloader unlocked instead which will also sim unlock for you. The difference is a sim unlock will cost about $12ish whereas bootloader is closer to $24ish. However with an unlocked bootloader you can run unsigned kernels allowing you to overclock, undervolt, easily root, install custom ROMs and more. If that all means nothing to you just do the sim unlock, just giving you the options.

I think if you have Alejandrissimo unlock your bootloader, it also unlocks the sim.

Is it possible for me to Install real ROMs to my Xperia Play R800x CDMA with a locked bootloader? I'm not talking about ROMs like Cola6, i mean stuff like AuroraPlay and stuff(Of course for CDMA). I understand i can't install custom kernels with the Locked bootloader and my bootloader can't be unlocked, so are there any ROMs that are possible to be installed to a CDMA XPlay that doesn't need a custom kernel? I would very much appreciate it! Thanks!
As if now the only actual rom tjat can be installed on a locked bootloader (from xperiance) is darkforest 3.0.5 which is verizon 2.3.3 and why can't you unlock the bootloader I got my code for unlocking from sony copied it and used flashtool to unlock my bootloader

I can't unlock my bootloader because the *#*#7378423#*#* menu has the option missing meaning it isn't possible. I wish i could because it would be so much better and i don't understand why some of these phones aren't possible and some are.

To be honest I never read the instructions on the sony site, I do not know what that menu will tell me if I flash a factory firmware. I do know that my R800x has been unlocked. It will not hurt to ignore step 1 there and follow the rest. If it works you have unlocked your bootloader. If not it only took about 5-15 mnutes.

Thank you guys
Hope for fast answers!!

No, you are one of the unlucky ones, who can not unlock bootloader at all.
Removing sim-lock/branding does not allow you to unlock your phone, because fastboot is disabled and only way to enable is via test point method, which is impossible at the moment for the phones manufactured 12W11.
ohhhhhh...
but it worked at the arc from a friend...
there was standing unlock allowed no and he disabled sim/netlock and there stand bootloader unlock allowed yes..
manufactor at 12w14 :/
so i dont know

the bootloader isnt the problem. but i want to flash any kernel to overclock my phone. but i think this isnt possible on my device so ill forget it. i dont want a better android version. i only want to use my gingerbread roms faster and use all of them. thats why..
im happy enough if i can flash kernel
But to flash custom kernel, you need to unlock your boot loader, which is impossible unless you get rid of the carrier lock.
