I can replicate this problem every single time, and I'm wondering if I'm the only one....
AOKP B36 w/Faux Kernel
Pure Calendar Widget (Redraw)
Beautiful Widgets(Redraw)
Clock (Redraw)
Effects Nova Launcher, Apex Launcher, Stock Launcher
Everytime I install an app from the market, my widgets redraw, without fail. I don't know if I've always had this, or If I just started noticing it.... but its everytime.... Am I alone here?
I need to fix this, as its really bugging me.
$10 to the first person who gets rid of my redraws on AOKP when installing an app from Google Play Store.
Anybody?
Use the V6 supercharger script and bulletproof your launcher.

Added $10 Bounty.
Have you tried adding this to the build.prop:
ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=1

I don't think its a memory issue, I think Google has programmed it to restart after installing an app so that the launcher shows each new app. It doesn't reset the widgets when you uninstall, but you can only uninstall one at a time instead of installing, lets say, 3 apps at once. But I might be wrong of course.

If that's the case does it still redraw it if you have the auto-add Widgets unchecked?

In and of themselves, build.prop edits are worthless in forcing the launcher to stay in memory in ICS. For precious versions of Android that worked, but it's ineffective from 4.0 up.
The OP simply needs to just follow the instructions on the V6 supercharger thread if he wants to eliminate the redraws. It's quite a simple and effective solution, actually. I've yet to have a single redraw after supercharging and bulletproofing about two months ago.

Don't forget to modify your services.jar. Uploading it to the 00M priority changer is without doubt the easiest way of making the necessary changes.

Its a launcher refresh. Maybe refreshing Widgets on app install etc.
Well idk I filled the launcher with nothing but Widgets all over the place and I couldn't recreate it. No build prop edit or anything fancy Just aokp b36 and faux 018b2. I was just throwing stuff out at him seeing if something worked

I thought it's something that everyone could recreate... Just install something from the market and exit to the homescreen...
I already knew about supercharger, but I heard it's near useless on the Galaxy nexus due to its high end specs....
I almost agree with a post above that it might be by design from Google.
Already tried unchecking auto add widgets...

Is it possible to turn off MotoBlur on the DEFY? I am interested in buying this phone.
Also, anyone know if the bootloader is encrypted and unhackable?
Turn off motoblur in what sense? And why? The launcher? Or the apps?
It is rootable. Not sure of the bootloader etc. Probably want to read through dev forum to see if you find anything that suits your needs

I removed most of the moto widgets and haven't had any issues with blur since.
nitewalkergr can you give a list of the motoblur services you deleted and maybe how you did it or point me to a tutorial where to do it?
New to the android scene coming from a very old herald p4350 that still rocked the world but my screen broke for the fifth time now and I thought maybe its time for some gorilla glass
I concur on the list of services.
There are sites that list Windows services - what they do and what the consequence of switching it off is. It would be excellent if we could compile something like this for the Defy.
In my opinion the Blur launcher is laggy and crap. however some of the blur apps are actually good. The easiest way is to install another launcher - I installed my favourite - Launcherproplus and bang the lag was gone.
Yeah the blur apps for contacts n stuff cannot be removed but the launcher itself can.
+1 for launcher pro as well.
Sent from my MB525 using XDA App
I'm using launcher pro and it's quite good. But tbh blur isn't laggy at all, maybe it's because i don't use its widges? but anyways i'm using launcher pro and i'm loving it...
I removed the Blur widgets because I have no need for them but if I go into Settings > Applications > Running services I still see things named 'FeedReceiverService' and 'NewsRetrievalService'.
Does anyone know some way of killing the services, because they're just a waste of space to me.
If you removed the news widget, friend feed and social feed apk's those services shouldn't be there. They're not on mine.
'Scuse my ignorance but how do I remove the apks?
When I said I removed the widgets, I just meant from the homescreen.
You would need to root and then delete the apks at your own risk. Always back up first as im not sure how/if they interact with other blur services etc.

If u don't want to have blur running then don't sign into your accounts under blur accounts.... simple. I personally like that quick contacts and clock and date widget.

Frankly at first I wanted to get rid of Motoblur as well but in the end it isn't that bad and probably better tested for battery life compared to the usual apps like twitter and such.
However when you change the SIM it asks you for Motoblur user/pass. Fine. I understand the point, security. Now anyone knows how to make it cache the credentials? Or just a general patch for Android to "trick it" into not knowing you changed the SIM? Having to enter user (=long email) + pass for motoblur, then gmail password as well (standard android treat) is quite too much (this is even before we go into SIM pin, normal screen unlock, etc).
Just installed launcher-pro and really happy with it.

Aren't there Defys released in some countries without Motoblur? If that's the case, we could hope for a Motoblur-free ROM that should be easily flashable, right?
Just install adw launcher from market, tadaa, nicer look and no more lag. My Defy was running Motobloat for exactly as long as it took me to open the market, dow load adw and reboot
I am not talking about the looks. I skipped the registration at the first boot and installed LauncherPro immediately.
Still, lot's of motoblur-stuff running in the background (social networks app for example) and most stock-apps are changed. It's mostly minor changes and sometimes even for the better, but a vanilla android version would feel "cleaner".

Love the phone but a few times the launcher has redrawn after exiting an app because of most likely memory issues. Anybody using this option? Assuming over time this would keep more memory free and reduce this issue. Any thoughts?

This is one of the reasons why I don't like that Google included these developer options pre-installed on this phone. They're developer options for a reason, we can install them if we need to.
This feature is designed so that developers can test their app to be sure that data is properly saved when is no longer in the foreground. For example, if a user receives a phone call or jumps to another app, the app needs to do what is necessary to save it's data. At times, Android can kill a process in the background. If the user plans to go back (perhaps they finished the phone call), they want to see what it is they were working on last. The developer is supposed to handle this case by rebuilding everything as it was before (to provide that seamless experience for the user when switching between apps).
This debug feature helps us test that it works.
For the average user, all you're really more likely to do is slow down your apps. As they will have to rebuild themselves when you resume them, and you may even open yourself to more quirky bugs (for those apps that didn't properly test the above scenario).
So please don't enable it unless you're doing it for development purposes. My 2 cents.
*EDIT* Here's a page from the Android Dev Guide justifying my explanation:
http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/debugging/debugging-devtools.html
Immediately destroy activities
Tells the system to destroy an activity as soon as it is stopped (as if Android had to reclaim memory). This is very useful for testing the onSaveInstanceState(Bundle) / onCreate(android.os.Bundle) code path, which would otherwise be difficult to force. Choosing this option will probably reveal a number of problems in your application due to not saving state. For more information about saving an activity's state, see the Activities document.

weird.. how many widgets do you have on your launcher? the more widgets you have, the slower the launcher is.
Have you tried another launcher? The stock launcher has never been known for being fast and efficient, although I haven't had any issues with it (whereas I'm a LauncherPro fan on my other devices).

I have quite a few Widgets but nothing too crazy I don't think. I use LauncherPro on my other devices as well but I love this new launcher so I'm going to stick it out. Like I said the most common task that causes the issue is when I'm using the web browser and then come out of it. Otherwise its been stable. I've noticed the same thing with Honeycomb on my Xoom so it might just be one of those things I have to put up with.

i'm also noticing some redraw and occasional lag when hitting the home button.
I'm hoping that CM9's custom launcher will have an option to lock it in memory- that may increase the performance by a lot.
also when replacement launchers like go launcher start optimizing more for ICS those might be good options.
Have you tried converting your launcher into a system app? You'll need to use Titanium Backup Pro or something similar to do it for you, or simple copy the APK into your system/app folder... Really sped up my launcher!

Thanks for clarifying the meaning of "Don't keep activities"
my razr xt910 cannot be counted upon to run smoothly with all the apps simultaneously running and forcing itself to go into reboot. i then fancied an iPhone single styled system (as compared to Android multi-talks) cuz iPhone looks robust and responsive. all the killer that claimed to do the job looked more of a farce and then when i stumbled upon the destroy activity i was like OMG. srsly b4 using it I've only got just inner 100mb of ram, after using it i have a whooping 400mb ram. UI appears faster and all. regarding the relaunching of apps and battery life being used up. i think I'll start to worry about it on a later date. what say any body. ooh yes to add on, even after i deleted 40 apps on my phone it still hanged like fcuked. i guess i can reinstall them back again and not have to worry about it. btw i can't seem to root my xt910 for nuts so i can't custom ROM it along with all other fanciful mods that i hear about what others did to their phones.
Just got my galaxy s3 today. Been messing with it sense. Unfortunately i've had issues with some launchers and I don't know why. Apex/Nova/Holo have all been giving issues in the terms of putting down Widgets at the home screen. All three will tell me that there isnt enough room on the page for the widget when that same page is completely blank.
Another issue i had was super lagginess. I haven't rooted yet because im still kinda noobish and i dont want to do anything derpy to the phone. And i wanted to give touchwiz at least a little bit of time. Aside from that though ive been installing and un-installing launchers like mad and im still getting a bit of lag from switching between pages for an example. Ive got scroll effects turned off and speed nearly all the way up (or low in Apex i think) and its still feeling sluggish.
Was wondering what recomendations you guys could give. Like i said i want to stay stock for a bit...at least until cm comes out
When you reboot the phone, do you get the prompt that asks you what program you want to use (for the launcher)? Select your desired launcher, and press Always.
Yea I get that option and ive placed it for my holo launcher but for whatever reason apex and nova were giving me issues like lag and starting to fc things. Was just curious if any one knewbl what was up. Any good launches you would recommend?

Going to ask something slightly noobish but how do I make one of the launchers a system app? Im still stock at the moment so im trying to figure out whats going on.
I did a full wipe just now and its sill giving me issues that there isnt enough room on the page for the upload of the widget. All im trying to do is upload a stock digital clock widget and its giving me issues in both apex and holo. Is it because they might be touchwiz widgets and the launchers aren't recognizing them? I dont know if that could be the issue but like I said im still stock. Now that i look at it though I may have to root my phone sooner than I wanted. Been on battery for three hours and im already discharged at 51% grr..:crying:

Q: I can't add widgets to my homescreen from the Widgets tab of the drawer. Help!
A: In order to use the in-drawer widgets feature, you have to either enable the Root Helper from advanced settings or install Apex Launcher as a system app (instructions below), both of which require root on your device. This is due to limitations of the Android framework, so there is no way we could change this requirement. If you have just installed it as a system app and still cannot add widgets from the drawer, please reboot your device and try again. If you do not have root access, you may still add widgets from the system widget picker. Just long press on the homescreen and choose "Widgets" from the popup list.

I am so sick of receiving Go Launcher EX ads for "New Themes Arrived!" in my notification bar. I searched through preferences many times and have searched online many times trying to find a way to disable Go Launcher from sending me their annoying spam, but I just can't seem to find how to disable it.
Anyone have a way? I really like Go Launcher and want to stick with it, but if there is not a way, I'm getting rid of it.

Wow - they must really be pushing those notifications the last couple days. I have been googling for the answer, and all I am finding so far is the question, and the date posted is always within the last couple days.
I am another that likes Go Launcher, but the notifications - especially the graphic notifications are extremely annoying.
I haven't used Go Launcher, but the other applications I've used that do that are generally easily replaceable. What I mean by that is I couldn't find a way to turn off the notifications in them, so it was easier and better to replace them.
I do believe Apex launcher can use Go Launcher themes, and it never caused any problems for me. Maybe the Go launcher compatibility is only in the paid version though. I don't recall since I'm just using the standard Trebuchet launcher in CM10.
Airblocker on the play store will block push ads, but I dont think GO is using ads but a notification which I think you can turn off thru settings in the theme store thing, been a while since I used it. Or you could try add on detector from the market to try and remove them, or lucky patcher may be able to strip the notifications
I like to break stuff!
I never found a way to disable those notifications, it's jsut part of the 'free' I guess. I used GO launcher for almost 2 years but I feel like it has gotten a bit bloated and they're trying to make an extension for nearly everything.
I tried a few other launchers but settled on Holo.

i tried firewalling all the go apps and even that didn't help.
time to start looking at alternatives.. i assume this is Go Launcher doing this?
I have been experiencing the same. I had to abandoned Golauncher for Apex. Golauncher got absurd with the many updates of their launcher. Many of these updates deleted settings or apps. And made my phone unresponsive. Now Gosms is getting out of hand. I keep emailing them, first about that gochat crap that wouldn't go away. Now these texting of themes. But they don't email you back. I might have to abandoned gosms for handcent...

I think I may have found the solution, I too was tired of those notifications and was close to switching to another launcher.
Anyway, do it at your own risk.. I'm not so sure this will work in the long run since I just did it 2 days ago... I went into the launchers data found in system root /data/data/com.gau.go.launcherex for my phone (LG Motion 4G not sure if the folder name will be different for others) using the File Explorer app, then I went into the folder named shared_prefs, I then opened all the apprecommended, gostore, and gamecenter, also the autocheck, featuredtheme and msgcenter .xml files with File Explorer's built in text editor and changed where it says standalone='yes' into 'false' saved changes to each one, File Explorer automaticaly saves a backup within the folder incase you mess up then I exited the app so far I haven't gotten any more automatic updated notifications
Never had a non-rooted Android until now (Note 2, 3, 4) and the lag is insane for me. I use Greenify and have it killing nearly everything that is non-essential. I only have GPS, WiFi, basic SPan, and Sync enabled, none of the other stuff. I'll reboot every day or two. I close out apps when I'm done using them, etc. There isn't anything super obvious I'm doing to increase lag. But it's there. Even Contacts force closes every few days. Hangouts does not play nice with Swype. Just to pull up the phone log takes a long time. Any advice or should I just reflash stock to see if that helps?
Thanks, and if you haven't pledged to the root bounty, please do! Let's get this thing solved!

I use Nova as well and my Note is fairly snappy. I have found that every so often an app will either kill battery or slow the UI down.
There are lots of things that can be causing it so I'm on sure if there's a quick fix without really k owing more of your setup. (what's installed, art/davlik, developer settings, etc.)
I personally don't use greenify on a no rooted device cause I couldn't get it to automatically work. What I did do, and it seems to have helped greatly is to block/disable a bunch of bloat with the program at the following link:

Works great and leaves everything in place so OTA updates still work.
