Good/bad(?) news about video playback

Here's the official list of supported audio/video formats.
It has .avi DivX included out of the box, so we can finally expect hardware accelerated playback without conversion!
Xvid, on the other hand, is not listed. Don't really know if it means no xvid (my DVD player doesn't officially support Xvid either, but plays them fine).

That's great news!
According to this WP7 supports h264 at both main profile and high profile which means that we could easily watch 720p videos downloaded from youtube. So it means that even mkv files will just need to be remuxed which takes only few minutes. Great!
For perfect support it needs mkv support with subtitles.
And remember that all this is hardware accelerated!
Yeah, but 99.99% of my video files are xvid avis, don't know if I can watch these.

yeah lets hope that coreplayer or somebody makes a player that supports all media file types
They can't do it in managed code. Period. Even if they could, there' no freakin' way to copy files to a WP7 device.

This is subject to change so they can still add support for xvid, if not you'll have to change fourCC from xvid to divx and you're good to go(unless your xvid's have some exotic features that don't exist in divx).
OK, sounds good, so it could be really usable in terms of video playback (not to mention that so far it's the best out-of-the-box format support in the market). Still no AC3 sound though.

AC3 would be nice but overkill. Who needs 6 channel stream on a mobile device
It would be useful only when connected to HDTV through HDMI cable
Next thing they must add is MKV support with subtitles

I don't need 6 channels on a mobile device of course (in fact, I don't even care for 6 channels at home). I just don't want to convert the damned things.

Conversion of the audio track itself shouldn't last longer than 10 minutes so I wouldn't call that long. But I agree having AC3 support on the device would be very consumer friendly so maybe in future release.
I would love to have FLAC support too

what kind of program would u recommend to convert these files mine always takes 4ever, but then again my laptop is pretty darn slow, but what do u use?
As of today, Zune software recognizes Xvid files and plays them fine on the software. For the Zune HD player, it converts it into wmv prior to syncing it. But in the following months, the device will get Native Xvid support. So, my guess is WP7S will have Zune HD-like playback abilities, so, Xvid is definitively a go.
MKV thought are not played in the software.

Dolby Headphone would do at a pinch, but something based on Smyth Virtual Surround would be even better.

[Q] DLNA with Sony Bravia TV

Hello guys ! I have an Sony Bravia Engine TV - KDL-40EX500. The TV has DLNA but when I try to steam a video with my One X this error Pops up - ''Sorry, this video cannot be played. (714)'' Can Somebody Please help me !!! Thanks !
I have the very same problem with my Sony Bravia TV.
Pictures play well, fast, and reactive. But when I try to play a video I get the same message you get.
Sad. But I guess that the problem is on Sony rather than HTC (I'm able to play to other devices). Maybe they do not follow completely the DLNA specification?
I will try out some different formats and resolutions becouse I have tryed only 1080p... maybe 480p .avi or .mp4 would run ?
This is what I found:
I own a Sony Bravia KDL46EX503 and have WAISTED many hours trying to find what formats the DLNA client supports.
First thing to note, there are file formats and there are video codecs BOTH are important. For example you can have an AVI file format containing video data that requires the AVC codec to play it. On a similar basic you can have an MP4 file format containing video data that requires the AVC codec to play it. However even though the Sony DLNA client can play AVC video data it does not recognise either the AVI or MP4 file format! Why? If you no the answer please tell me!
The Sony DLNA client for the KDLxxEX serries TV supports the following file formats:
MPEG-PS (.mpg or .mpeg) and must contain video data for MPEG version 2 codec.
BDAV (.mts or .m2ts) and must contain video data for the AVC codec.
Audio data must be in either MP3 or AC3 codec formats. To be certain that the audio will work you are best advised to use the AC3 format. (you can use either 2ch or 5.1ch )
Please do not waist any time with any other formats unless Sony have specifically told you that they now support them.
I have been successful at streaming both MPEG2 and AVCHD to my Sony via Twonky Media Server all other formats DO NOT work.
Given that a Sony TV that supports DLNA clients are not cheap I do find their attitude to supporting multiple file formats very arrogant. In particular I do not understand why they only support the MP4 and DIVx formats on the USB?
How difficult is it? Well my 10" Polaroid picture frame with wireless connection supports every format (except DIVx) that I have thrown at it so far. It recognises AVI, MP4, MPEG2, MPEG1, WMV all with various codecs including VIDx and AVC!
Come on Sony get with the picture (pun intended)!

Soo I think it will play MPEG... soo if we want videos we have to Convert them on the PC....
Well, the comfort of streaming from the phone was exactly to avoid sitting at the computer.
Anyway, for now I am using the following alternative:
The phone is set to autoupload on Dropbox whatever I shoot on the camera. Then I use the TV to access my pc, navigate to the Dropbox folder, and play the video (the PC does the transcoding automatically).
Everything works fine. The only thing is that one needs to switch on the pc.
You could try using Twonky Mobile https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pv.twonkyremote&hl=en
I don't have a Sony Bravia TV, but I used to have issues streaming to my Sony PS3 with some video formats. With Twonky I can stream every format that I could play via USB.
is it a 1080 recorded video you're trying to play? I found that 720 videos play fine - but the 1080 videos were actually 1920x1088 - and that extra few pixels was upsetting my TV (Samsung C6000). I logged it with HTC who raised a bug report. Other than that, haven't heard anything.
Sony DLNA
Sony have just released some new software that gets over the DLNA file compatibility issues. Optimised for BRAVIA, Blu-Ray and PS3.

Sonia Bravia - Playing videos from an external HD
I have a Sony Bravia KLD-46EX750.
I can view and play some videos wireless from an external HD but some I cannot even see in the folder. I am trying to find out why this is. If anyone can help in anyway please post.
- All files are avi. Some I can see and some I cannot.
- I used to be able to see several folders in the videos section but I can now only see the one folder.
- At first I though maybe the Bravia could only thumbnail a certain amount of videos, so as we atched them we moved them to other folders. The list is just getting smaller.
- I cannot find any refresh selection.
I would like to know:
why I can only see one folder and
why I cannot see all videos

[Q] MHL Video Player

Hi there..
Just want to ask if somebody know which of Video Players support subtitles on Htc one x via MHL, i used to watch movies with Galaxy S2 and Video.apk from Galaxy S2 supports subtitles via MHL, i searched on google but no results as i want.. I want to ask you if it possible to install Video.apk from Galaxy s2 to Htc one X?
Thanks in advance
i use diceplayer, it plays basically any file (and uses hardware decoding on hox)
it supports subtitles, can't imagine why it wouldn't over mhl, as the mhl is just a mirror onto the tv.
it supports (according to the app description)
Subtitle format
- SSA,SMI,SRT,VOBSUB
- MKV subtitle extraction supported
- Unicode/Multibyte charset supported.

It's not working with diceplayer too..
The most probable reason is the hardware decoding. Try the BSPlayer application and make sure you turn the software decoding on and you will see your subtitles your telly.
This is an issue with the Tegra 3 devices, as I have the same problem with my Transformer Prime and I have to use the same trick when I connect the HDMI cable.

[Project] HW accelarated video player to reproduce subtitles over mhl-hdmi

Hi at all,
the well-known problem, when we play an hw-accelerated video file (just like a 720p mkv ) is that the subtitles aren't ouputted to TV throght hdmi-mhl. That's because when the hw decoding is used, only the video layer is ouputted.
This is the answer form the diceplayer google group :
"Hi,
The overlay including subtitle when HW accelerated should be supported by manufacturer. The Android framework does not have any interface for HDMI (MHL), so the HDMI output depends on manufacturer's implementation.
But the most devices do not support the HDMI output with the overlay, so it is to hard to support it.
Thanks."

So, I think that this is the only missing thing to make out GNEX a perfect media player, better than an atom + ion platform.
I saw that here in XDA, there is a project for the galaxy S2:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1335549&page=3
A video player that can output subtitles over mhl... (unfortunatly not ICS compatible)
So, If galaxy S2 can, why the GNEX not? we have an "open" platform where to develop software...
I ask to everyone that can help with this project, if someone knows where to start debugging the problem: software or hw related? what libs are involved in this?
If someone give me a starting point i'll try to spend my free time to figure out a possibile solution. I'm not used to gnex development, so I need a starting point from expert developers...
Btw, any kind of info that anyone can provide I think it will be useful.
Thanks,

FYI, the HW decoder inside our chip sucks. There are a lot of videos that can be decoded by HW by nvidia purevideo in NG-ION but our phone decoder fails.
I know this because I use and love the GNex and also the technical manager of a company that sells HTPC and PC HW in general.
So is this project worth it? I say yes if the purpose is to make subtitles work over hdmi, otherwise for real world usage I say no.

I watch every night hd mkv and mp4 files before go to bed: and every single file i've ever tested was reproduced correctly by hardware. It never fail.
It's obvious that if I had to reproduce a blu-ray I go throght my ion htpc on living room, but on my free time I use the GNEX + diceplayer and it never failed to reproduce anything.
I make a REAL use of this.

The file problem is dependent on which files you use, for my file pool, I'm not as lucky. But anyway if you don't have something to post for your post in DEV section, this is not the right place for your post AFAIK.
