AOKP Provides a Gapps download for each of their releases which includes the standard google apps (Maps, Gmail, etc..) just flash it in recovery and you are set.
You can also use ES File explorer and extract the specific APKs from the GApps zip and place them directly in your system/apps folder. You just need to make sure you set the permissions to RW R R

its annoying why doesnt them put the whole pack and thats it =/

You just might have to download from a random site...this site seems decent http://www.apktops.com/google-maps-6-7-0.html
Just install lookout and it will scan the app to make sure it's ok.

Be careful what gapps packages you download. If certain parts are not signed with the same key as the rom, you will break things.
For example, you cannot use BAMF gapps on AOKP.

Here you go.
I pulled that Maps apk from my AOKP so it should be safe to use as per adrynalyne's warning.
EDIT: What I mean is I am running AOKP and that Maps I downloaded from the Market and is running fine on my phone. So hopefully it should run fine on yours as well.

becasue the cyanogenmod has much visibility in the world..and google asked cyanogen to remove the gapps from the rom (legal things)..other roms usually have gapps included because no one (google) care about it..
Maybe you can try this apk first. Don't need to use Recovery.

[APP] Google Now (JB Search) for ICS Roms NO VOICE ~ 7.6.2012

Original thread and development/updates here
Confirmed working on Hercules running CM9, I have not tested on other ROMS including touchwiz based ones. Flash at your own discretion, I'm not liable for bricks, etc. Read directions very carefully and it works as described.
This requires root and the knowledge of how to manipulate system apps. I will not be providing support for Root Explorer/Astro/ES File Explorer/etc if you don't know how to set it to read/write mode.
Voice search WONT work. I will update the thread if someone, somewhere gets it working.
edit:Confirmed to be "working" on non-AOSP Roms, so flash away!
edit 2: New file with less force closes and more cards! No voice search still :crying:
If flashing for the first time:
Download File
Go Into /system/app and rename GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk to GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk1 (as a backup).
Go to downloaded file
Rename from Velvet-theos0o#.apk to Velvet.apk
Copy to /system/app and change permissions to RW-/R--/R--
Reboot
Open Search widget and give it a moment to start up
Go into settings->Privacy and accounts-> enable "Search on google.com"
?????
Profit
If flashing the updated file:
Download New File
Go into Applications and clear data for Google Search
Go into /system/app and delete GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk (this should be the old version of Google Now)
Go to downloaded file
Rename from Velvet-theos0o#.apk to Velvet.apk
Copy to /system/app and change permissions to RW-/R--/R--
Reboot
Open Search widget and give it a moment to start up
Go into settings->Privacy and accounts-> enable "Search on google.com"
?????
Profit

what location am i replacing into on justin's build? system/apps?
edit: nope still can't get the damn gmail too. everything else working fine. sigh ;(
Let's say i want to forget the gmail app. Are there any themes I can install for Nova launcher that will do the inversion in the sms and phone?
Also if I want to downgrade to 4.1.2 do I have to flash gapps or jst the 4.1.2 apk (which is what I've been doing-the latter by force installing 4.2 through titbackup and then installing the 4.1.2 apk)?
Can I just flash a standalone gmail 4.1.2 and then the inverted?

[Q] CM10 - are gapps mandatory?

Hello!
Might sound like a stupid question :silly: but:
- is it necessary to install gapps? Or, if you just don't need/want them, don't install them and phone will work like a charm?
Asking because it says (quote):
install kernel
full wipe
flash rom
reboot into rom
reboot back into recovery
flash gapps
Just curious, as gapps install a LOT of things... Someone might need just play store, or just search, or just chrome, or... you know what I mean... :fingers-crossed:
Thanks in advance...
Gapps basically contain all the preloaded apps by Google (Google Maps, News and Weather, etc). Your phone will still work without flashing Gapps, but you'll be missing out on Google services, especially Google Now. So, it is better to flash the Gapps
Based on personal experience

Yes, you're right about what's in gapps.
But, let's say, for me, I don't need Google Maps, as I have iGO. I also have another weather app, I don't need Google Now, and so on...
With gapps installed, it's a bit hard to tell which one of gapps you can freeze or uninstall, because they seem cross-connected...
Not to mention that it's no use to have some app on the phone that you don't use or need and it's just taking some memory...
So, basically, like you said, no need to install gapps and if I want just one app from Google, I install it. And the phone will work. Good, thank you!
You can install gapps and then use a root explorer to go into /system/app and delete the apps you don't need.

It's hard to say as I believe it pull flight status the same way as it does packages through your gmail account so I'd reinstall the Gapps. Are you on stock, CM, AOKP, etc ?
I'm pretty sure you have to OPT into reading things like package tracking and flight status from your email. I know I did that but I don't remember what the link was.
