Cheap micro USB cable vs HTC charger cable TEST INSIDE - General Accessories

I bought a cheap micro USB charge cable, but it takes half the time of the standard 6 inches long cable.
So i'm after a powerful charger or the best cable

If I'm understanding correct,
You looking for quicker charging?
Sent from my SGH-I997 using xda premium

Not neccessarily quicker charging, just not slower charging lol.
I've found out that USB cables can charge and transfer data at differing speeds, depending on the construction.
I am happy using the standard HTC cable but it is too short, so i'm after a longer cable, without sacrificing charge time.

Oh OK, I don't think you'll have to worry too much about varying charge time, the data/power rate maybe a bit different but not really to the point of where you should concern yourself with it, and I can tell you now its most likely a USB 2.0 cable so just make sure you get a 2.0 at the appropriate length and you should be good

There is a test in a thread on here, i will find it, but a cheap cable was charging at 200ish mAh, and the HTC one was over 500mAh. With a cheap cable, my phone can't be charged fast enough to use at the same time when the battery is just about dead.

Are you using the same power source for both, if so then its probably the materials of the wires if you can get one that uses gold connections it'd be I believe that fastest as far as cables go but they can be pretty pricy

It'd probably be cheaper to do what I did, get a battery charging dock and a second battery, keep one on the charger till the other dead and swap you can check eBay for prices of batteries and the dock but you probably won't speed much more than $20 on both

@deathblade. There are so many 3rd party charging cable options now that are longer and much cheaper than Apple's. Thankfully Apple now offers a 6' and not just 3' - but it costs $29!
Some 10 footers I've seen online go for $7 to $12.
Is there a way to test their charging speed? As compared to Apple?
Reading the reviews by purchasers can be helpful but they are all circumstantial and based on opinion and observation. I've not seen any scientific testing to back negative comments of cables reported being much slower and at this point it's long over due we be able to test and know for sure the performance of all these 3rd party cables, to buy in confidence with scientific testing backup.
Do you know if there are apps or tools to do this?

Did not know about the copper thing....

think of it this way. what is naturally more conductive?
check this chart explaining whats best for conductivity
http://www.tibtech.com/conductivity.php
the cheapo cables and such are made of tin
the name brand are made of copper thus the charging differences.
however also keep in mind that for your battery to last as long as possible (not just on a single charge but till it deads( not longer useable need new one dead)) charging slowly is best, but there are times that we need our devices to charge ASAP and a name brand cable is recommended for those times...or you know a backup battery is perfered lol

Good Micro USB Cables

I figured we could use a thread where people could post good deals on micro usb cables or just good micro usb cables that are proven to work on the EVO.
I picked up one of the Blackberry cables. It has the molded in Blackberry logo and it works well for charging/data and it is cheap. However, the insulation isn't very flexible so I imagine it will be fairly stiff in a cold car in winter. Example:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150487513418&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT
I have also used the Nokia sync cables with partial success. I had one with my last Nokia phone that worked great, very high quality cable, and great flexible insulation. However, when I sold my Nokia phone and the cable with it, I bought a replacement cable off of Ebay and strangely enough, data worked but it wouldn't charge. So, I can only recommend these with a little bit of reservation. Look for the ones that have a cord detangler on them (CA-101). Example:
http://cgi.ebay.com/CA-101-USB-Data...031540?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item35acb861f4
The stock HTC cable has decent flexible insulation but the ends seem a bit flimsy. Anyone find where to buy more of these cheap?
Let's try to avoid the cheap non-branded cables in this thread unless you can attest to their quality.
I figure I should post here because I'm in need of a cable too.
A strange note on a "Blackberry" cable I got from Amazon, this one here:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001QATRCA/ref=oss_product
This cable seemed to work fine for me, my phone would show it is charging in AC mode when I was plugged into the wall charger, and data transfers fine across it. I did break one of the tiny plastic tabs that holds the micro side connector together, and it split open, but it is just two rectangular plastic halves that I taped back together. Everything seems to work fine on the cable, except when I charge the phone, I could swear it was charging SLOWER than my other cables.
Sure enough, after using Current Widget and testing with various cables, it was in fact charging at a LOWER current and charging SLOWER than all my other cables.
It just so happens that my OEM cable got bent at the micro usb side connector, and after trying to mess around with it the cable works but if you mess with it too much it disconnects.
I'm using a cable from my palm car charger, and that works fine.
I'm planning on buying one of the monoprice ones, they have nice gold plated ones for around $1.50 plus shipping. If anyone has any words to say about the longer cables (6ft) and the ferrite cores, it would be great to hear if there's any difficulties with those.

I've been using a Palmpre cable.
Anyone no of of any 90 degree cables that point down (towards the back of the phone). I figure a 90 degree cable would work well for a car mount. I found one source but $16 seems a little pricey for a micro usb cable.
I got these cables with the car charger (actually shows up as AC ~1A charging too) and also comes with a home charger. Like the retractable/adjustable length on these since they don't get all tangled around my dash. Check them out $4.50 is a steal for these.

I've been using all of my extra Palm Pre cables with no problems. Found a 6-in-1 USB cable at Five Below that charges the Evo, Hero, iPod, Nintendo DS & some other stuff. Can't comment on how fast or slow it charges compared to other chargers but for $5 you can't beat it.

I have to recommend the monoprice cables as well. I got the 6 foot micro usb cable with ferrite core. With the HTC wall charger (TC U250) and the monoprice cable, I get 776-908 mA charging speeds. That's about 100-125 mA faster than the the HTC wall charger and stock cable that came with it.
Just looked at Monoprice due to this post. My my, such inexpensive cables! And myriad customer reviews say they are of good quality, sturdy, connections are strong, charges faster, etc. Thanks for alerting us to this site! Definitely gonna purchase myself some cables now. What a steal.
Does anyone know if these cables, or the one supplied with the phone, can be used with different, well, don't know how to name it... the thing you plug into the wall and the USB plugs into. The AC/DC adapter or something maybe? Yeah.
Retesting the monoprice cables, i get current output from 484-900 mA.

Ya, no reason why it wouldn't work with other ones, its just a USB cable. You can even use them to sync data between your phone and computer, just like any other USB cable.
You can always get a OEM one for a little more or about the same price. That's what I do. But the Samsung and Blackberry ones work well with the Evo.
Check out this if you want a retractable cable. We bought about 15 of these for people in my office.

Additional Wall Charger

Based on the talk so far and as is pretty typical, Nokia wants us to us the included charger for charging our L900's. What are you guys planning to do for a travel or backup charger?
All my charger consists of is a usb cord with a small low profile wall plug. You can use just about any adapter, powered usb hub, usb port on computer, back up battery, charging solution.
They say use their own because of something does happen and you admit you were not using their supplied equipment then the warranty will not cover you.
Also, the supplied charger does charge at a higher Amperage than a lot of the aftermarket ones. If you are having trouble with your Lumia 900 charging correctly with an aftermarket one, try the original one again.
Using Nokia Diagnostics, I can see that most of my Aftermarket chargers only send between 200-350mAh and the Stock Nokia one sends up to 650mAh. Quite a difference, and much needed for this larger battery...
PS: Using my PC USB port, I only get 150-200mAh.

The white puck Nokia charger is labeled to drive 1A at 5V. Most PC USB ports are current-limited well below 500mA. The yellow ports on Lenovos will generally provide more, but not a full 1A.
Just type "Nokia AC-16U fast charger" into amazon, a few working days & dollars later = spare charger!

The plug prongs don't fold flat, and the charger and cord are not color coordinated with the phone. This aspect should be changed for upcoming handsets. Nokia's designers should know better than this.
The charger needs to be the same color as the phone?
What other devices is this true for outside of the white iPhones and other black phones with generic black chargers (which are the same color by happenstance or by budget decisions, NOT by artistic design)? I don't think the Nokia designers were aware of this "need" for good reason.
I can buy you a sharpie and send it to you if you want. Just let me know which color you have, Cyan or Black. I wouldn't want to send you the wrong one.
Just saying, you can get Palm branded AC adapters from their webOS phones for dirt cheap (around $5 US) on eBay right now. The phone ones put out 1A as well (and the tablet ones put out 2A, but those are larger).
I haven't even bothered with the Nokia adapter since it doesn't have folding plugs, but I have a few Palm ones that work great.
There are two different models of the Palm one, one which is about an inch and a half long cylinder, and one that's a little larger, and most of the ads on eBay don't specify which it is, but if you're not picky then I don't think you can get anything OEM for cheaper.

For the record, I was a little surprised and disappointed when I saw a White adapter in the box. I would have preferred Black, although, most of the time, it's out of sight, just seemed strange, especially when Nokia is SO into color matching their accessories.

Both the larger and smaller phone ones are giving me ~ 850 mA, as is the 2A rated Touchpad one which is even larger. The only difference between the two phone ones other than size is that on the slightly larger one, the prongs actually screw off and let you use travel adapters for other countries' plugs.

I believe someone on the internet did a test and the Nokia charger charges faster than the majority of chargers. I don't know that any charger will hurt the phone if if delivers 1 or less amps at 5 volts. It may take longer to charge but your phone should be fine with other decent brands.
In addition to my Nokia charger I use the Belkin mini surge protector. It has two USB charging ports. I don't think it works for iphones though for some reason. Someone else will have to confirm.
In the car I use an onn Dual USB Car Charger. I can't find anything on the web about it. I bought it at Walmart for $10. It works for Lumia 900s and iphones. I've only had it a couple of weeks but it seems to work fine. The problem with car chargers is there seem to be a lot of unreliable models out there. Even the one on the at&t site gets plenty of bad reviews. I wouldn't mind paying more if I knew I was getting a product that would last me years. Anyway we will see if the Walmart charger lasts. If it dies I will report back.

The Belkin only delivers 500 mA to the USB, so it's about the same as plugging it into a computer. That's also the reason that it won't work for an iPhone.
I plugged into a Motorola Droid X charger - rated for 1000ma - it started charging the thing just as fast as OOTB charger. I think the phone is happy with any 1amp chargers. I'll test my iPad 2A charger in the car soon and report back.

Does your cable look like the picture I posted above with the slanted micro end, or is it a shiny black cases at the end with a white USB logo? Because the listing shows both pictures. Also how long is it. The one that came with our phone is around 5 feet long, most of the ones I've seen are about 3 feet long.
The main reason I want the original is because it's very flexible and doesn't hold it's shape. The one I pictured is very stiff and does hold it's shape, which is annoying on my desk.
I also updated my first post with an image of what the cord looks like that I do want.

Awesome deal! Thanks for the info.:good:
Sweet! Just ordered one. Thanks for the heads up!
Just a heads up for those that don't read the description, This is just the pad, you have to use a USB charger to power it, and it's designed for a 2 A charger. The stock nexus one may not work.
Requires 2Amp charger to function, sold separately.

I see that the N72 charger is only 1.35a. I thought that the N71 charger was 2a, but I could be mistaken and am too lazy to run upstairs and check.
Either way, I'm sure I have some 2a USB charger lying around the house somewhere, or could get one for a few bucks on Amazon. I'm not sure if that's just a suggestion or is actually required. I think it comes down to how much energy your device can draw. I imagine that, unlike a directly plugged in device, using wireless chargers will result in a slower charge cycle as a larger amount of the energy is lost, so it probably needs to be greater than what it normally uses. I know that, in general, you can use a higher mA output than what is required, as the device will only draw what it can/needs, but not sure about how wireless works in this regard.

I've followed a few reviews on this one since I have the S4 and was considering picking up the whole kit. The ones that mentioned trying another charger stated it didn't work. Wireless charging does work a bit differently since you lose some energy transferring the power to the induction coil.
I don't have time to source the reviews right now, but that might point you in the right direction.

This QI charger seems to be made to fit a Galaxy Phone. The edges seem to be tapered and possibily not allow the N7 to fix flush thus no charging. 50% off sounds like a good idea but it is a waste of money if it doesn't work.

Sold. This is dirt cheap for a quality Qi Charger. The mat seems larger then depicted on the Samsung Website and it doesn't show the "cloth-like" top. Anyway, confirmed working. Can't wait.

This pic is what made me want to look up the Samsung wireless charger... Then I found the promo! Glad I was able to help!
just a heads up guys, searching across my multiple chargers in the house as a previous user mentioned the hp touchpads charger is 2.0a as well as the first gen nexus 7. As far as I can see motorola, htc, lg and even the new chromecast chargers are lower than 2.0a and thus not good for this pad.

USB Cable for safe charging

Hello One users! So, I need a long USB Cable to charge my One, the one that came with the device is just to small . But, after seeing OnePlus devices melting down for not using a proper usb cable, I get scared of buying one that not works properly. Wich usb cable (you can give me a model or the specifications) will work just fine and will be safe to use with the One's charger?
Everyday I use the 'premium' brand cables from Monoprice: http://www.monoprice.com/Search/Index?keyword=micro+usb+premium
They're excellent.
Buy an extension usb male to usb female. And use it with original cable

Is this safe? I also plan to buy so that I can have a separate one in office & at home.
I've been using mine for months, at home and at work, with one of their 5 port 40 W USB chargers.

Thanks because having an extra one is less hassle for me.
I like these much better than the unknown brand cable I bought. The cable feels thicker and better construction overall. They have an 18 month warranty too which is nice.

They can handle the same amount of power of the original cable?
I haven't noticed a difference. Everything I plug it into charges quickly.
Edit: I forgot that I had this app. This is the OPO charging via the Anker 10 ft microUSB cable which is plugged into an Anker 5 port 40 W charger.

Thirded... After talking with monoprice live chat and confirming at their premium USB cables use 24ga power wire, i ordered 5, 6-footers. I was very skeptical at first when i received my first order as the overall gauge of the wire seemed nearly half the size of the "premium" cables i previously ordered from ebay. Yet, they deliver 2A no sweat and i have not had an issue with any of them yet. The "premium" cables from ebay would barely deliver 1A to my phone. I assume the manufacturer just puts on a thicker insulating jacket to make it seem like a more premium cable but the numbers don't lie.
I did some extra testing with that app and variations of the original charger, original cable, Anker charger, Anker cable, and they all appear to charger around the same rate. If you want to pay a little less go with monoprice. If you want an 18 month warranty on the cable stick with Anker.
I bought a 6ft cable on Amazon. I just saw they are on same for $5. I'll be getting another. It charges at up to 1800mA.
BlueRigger Rapid Charge Micro USB C.../dp/B00HFFB2PK/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_HLX1ub0JRW2YZ
Guys, i bought a Goodis USB cable. A a friend talked good things about it, and I could find it by a local store. But, using the GSM battery app, the original cable charge at 800-1000mA, and the Goodis cable at 400-500mA. There would be a problem if I use the Goodis cable with the original wall charger? The time of charge isn't a problem, because is for charge when I'm sleeping!
Standard monoprice 28/24awg works great for me. Got a 3ft and 10ft both charging at 2a

If the cable is too high of a gauge aka too thin, its going to get hot. When it heats its going to cause more resistance and lower the total current able to pass producing more heat.
If you are using a cable that is clearly only allowing half the current to pass, stop using it. You are asking for trouble.
Risk of fire / damage to the phone is a real threat. Do a quick look at the guy who burnt his phone. Looks like a bad cable very well could have caused that.
Remember the supplied charger is rated for 2amps. That's a good amount of current that will kill a 28gauge cable.
