[Q] We may not get ICS after all - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Guys, I know there is a sticky about this, but since I'm a newbie in this, I can't comment in posts.
As the title says, today a comment on G+ by TMO says we may not get the long awaited ICS. Look at the pic.
I'm sorry but I think we all should know this.
Edit: Nevermind, it was an innocent mistake. They are talking about the HTC G2. Sorry for the inconvenience.

It's highly doubtful that T-Mobile would abandon their flagship phone while AT&T is upgrading theirs.
Combine this with the notices from Samsung that T-Mobile Galaxy S2 will be getting an update, pretty much guarantees that an upgrade is happening.

That says G2, which is also the HTC G2, which more then likely what they were referring to, not trying to sound mean btw.

I think I never said I signed up for this... I said I was a new member and that's why I create a post for something that has to go in the sticky.

Maybe you're right... Since we are all so desperate about ICS, I just posted this as information that i saw and wanted to share.
If it is wrong or something, you can always report it to the admins, so they delete this post.

Yeah, what he said. This is in reference to the G2, not GS2.
Context clues are key.
One being that the person Tmobile was responding to has a MT4G slide. The poster wanted ICS for the 4G slide as they thought it was fundamentally the same as the Sensation (which got ICS). Tmobile responded by saying that it is up to the OEM's and the G2 is an old Device and probably wont get it.
As the GS2 is not that old of a device, common sense would tell you that this isn't what he is referring to. Additionally, the MT4G slide is way more comparable to the G2 than to the GS2.

All ICS discussion goes in the sticky

Why would you make *this* your first post on the XDA forums? Seriously, you created a *NEW* thread just to ask a question that nobody here would really know the answer to? A question that has already been asked a hundred times!
Please, for the love of all that is good and right in this world, think before you post. Search before you post. And count to ten and ask yourself, "Is this the right forum to ask this question?" before you post.

lmfao!!!!
according to the timeline that was leaked we should get it at the end of this month.
It could be a month, it could be 2 or it could be several. Just be happy you have a phone that works. It will be out when its out. if you want it so soon learn to do it your self and do it your self.
Wow I swear everyone thinks there a mod. It would be nice if someone just answered his question. Not everyone is on the computer day and night researching the **** out of there phone. I am really starting to hate these forums.

Agreed. So one could do one of two things.
1) google: mytouch slide 3g android 2.2 release date, obtain answer.
2) locate android development forum, create a new account, confirm account, write message asking question, wait 6 hours, obtain answer.
But to be fair he asked when we think the slide will get it and not if we had any real information... so... July 27th at 2:45PM EDT.
Really?
What a waste of a thread wheres the moderator when you need em
Why does it take them so long to release an update? When new windows come out for millions of different pc's they have it working in days if it doesn't already work out the box. Here we have something smaller than even nlited windows xp,and it takes them months. Is it that hard to write drivers for these phones or they just taking they sweet time?If its that hard why not make it simple, make a program for android like nlite that slipstreams drivers and we good to go,is there a reason for all this compexity?
One more quistion does bios on these phones ever gets updates?

Main differences is, with PCs, the hardware is modular, and it is left up to the individual hardware components manufacturer's to make sure everything is up to date. The phone is an all in one. Add on top of that, the Sense UI that allows you to basically change the entire look and feel of the OS. So the core updates have to take all the variances in hardware into consideration.

Why one word comes to mind TROll. Someone said 10 min I guess I missed that update Now I have to wait till "July 27th at 2:45PM EDT".
is all that really necessary? we have a rom, yes it needs work, but now we can let the flaming die and do some work. if someone asks a question that seems obvious, just dont respond. eventually they will either find the answer on their own, or they will give up. its annoying to watch this forum for updates and information when half the posts are to flame someone. someone wants to mention wasting threads, recover the thread and make it useful.
now that there is a rom to work with, does anyone want to work on making it usable while the experienced devs build something with some polish?
Sufficient number of threads on this topic already; closed.

[Q] 8/1 Froyo Update?

Sorry if this has been addressed in another thread. I didn't see one dedicated to it and it's a hard thing to search.
So the update is available again today, Sunday 8/1. Does anyone know if it's still the 3.26.651.3 release? I installed one of the rooted ROMs and just wanted to know if I need to worry about updating again (to a newer rooted ROM) due to a newer official version.
Thanks!
So, official OTA is live? This is new.

Also, running one of the current ROMs means that you should plan to update. All of them have some kinks. They're very fresh.

Wait. So you installed the unrooted update, then got a notification that an update is ready on the same phone? Should be safe, just make sure the version numbers are different.
EDIT: Think you can copy it off the phone and post it somewhere?

No, sorry for the confusion. I have two phones; my rooted Evo and my wife's unrooted Evo. I installed the rooted ROM on my phone. I was curious on Sunday to see if the "official" update was available for manual updaters, as some sources had suggested, so I did a manual HTC software update on my wife's stock 2.1 unrooted phone. I was offered an update for the new 3.whatever/1.47whatever update (I don't have it in front of me)
I'd be happy to upload it, but I'm not sure where's it's stored. It didn't seem to be in the SD card's root, or under downloads. does anyone know where it would be?
HTC's twitter had something to say about an hour ago:
http://twitter.com/HTC
Why "trolling?"
I'd really like to know why someone tagged this with "trolling." What did I do that you'd call me a troll? All I did was ask a simple question about the update I got on my phone on Sunday.
I have to say, while not the most unfriendly place I've ever visited, it's pretty ****ing close. You guys are constantly at each other's throats and constantly insulting each other. I've never seen the word "troll" used as much as I have here. I've never seen so much ridicule and flaming over nothing.
Some people are actually pissed off (and actually insulting people!) because some other users dared say they weren't impressed with Froyo. Are you ****ing serious? Really? That bothers you? Holy ****; you really need to get a life. Others were actually put off by the idea of starting an "off-topic" thread in the Evo group! Talk about not having enough to worry about! I've seen a poster called a fanboy and a troll because he simply mentioned CM6. It seems like everyone who dares make a positive statement about a ROM is automatically a fanboy troll.
It seems like anytime a person other than a developer starts a thread, someone has to say something insulting about the user or impinge their motive behind starting it. I fully expected someone to make a negative comment concerning me starting this thread -- I just didn't realize you'd be such a ***** that you'd have to hide behind tagging it.
The developers seem like decent people, but a lot of you hangers-on are just a bunch of immature, self-important, assholes who seem to feel a need to insult others and their choices in order to feel better about yourself and the choices you've made.
I'm sure this will be considered trolling, but since everything anyone does is labeled as such, it's sort of lost its meaning
We used to have a rule that the first person to bring up Hitler, Nazis, or the 3rd Reich in an argument automatically lost -- it's a mark of a weak intellect and a dearth of ideas. I think the same needs to be said about you idiots who trot out "troll" on every thread. I've been here a month and it's already gotten old.
New people are not going to stick around if you treat them like this.

i do not recall if it gives a file name or revision number.
otherwise you might have to do it on your phone and then use root explorer or something to find the file.
i do not know if it is downloaded as "update.zip" or not.
you can also offer to upload it to one of the many hosting sites that are used here and one of the dev's cna look at it to see if its different than the one from last week.

OK asswipe. Here is a picture of my wife's evo asking to do an update with your post in the background to show it's today. Thanks, I appreciate the help. I thought this was a place for learning, but I don't understand how anyone can learn something when they obviously feel they know everything already.
All I want to know is: how do I find out if this is the same version as the one that came out Thursday or Friday, which I believe was 3.26.651.3? I tried to find it on the SD card, but I can't.

Upgrading to ICS from custom ROM

Hi,
I'm currently running the Paradox ROM on the SGH-T989. Now, with ICS around the corner , I'd like to know how I can revert to the official ROM.
I've already taken a backup of the original stock ROM using the Clockwork Recovery mod. I'd appreciate it if someone could post an idiot's guide on upgrading to ICS from a custom ROM.
Thanks!

Most likly mistaking with the true GS2 International model
An engadget article. It's being rolled out for the normal SGS-II in Europe. I can't post the links until I'm 8 posts old , so here's the quoted text from the article.
After that March 10th mishap, Samsung reaffirmed to us that it'd deliver Android 4.0 for its GT-I9100 Galaxy S II when it was darn good and ready -- well folks, the company appears ready. It's just announced both via Facebook and Twitter that the Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade that so many have lusted after is now available and will begin its rollout to users in Poland, Hungary, Sweden and Korea today, and will move onto other markets from there -- subject to carrier requirements, of course. Better yet, Samsung has affirmed that its Android 4.0 update for the Galaxy Note, Galaxy S II LTE, Galaxy Tab 8.9 and 10.1 will follow shortly. So, if you're one of the lucky ones to receive the upgrade, let us know how it fares for you in the comments below. Otherwise, feel free to keep clicking that update button.

I'm not familiar with how long the update would take to reach Carriers though. Anyway , I'm looking for a solution on how to upgrade when the update would come.
EDIT : Oops , someone beat me to it. I was referring to the international SGS-II. I'm not sure how long it would take to reach T-mobile.
I'm sick of the same thing being covered 20 times every day.
The international Galaxy S2 has NOTHING to do with our phone. Yes the name is the same but the insides of the phone are all different. They might as well have called our phone something completely different as to not confuse people.
Nothing from the I9100 will be usable for us. Nothing. Hence, I reiterate my previous statement: We are not seeing ICS for some months to come. Sad I know.

The real frustration with this site is that people come here looking for more information and get greeted with condescending dickishness. Those guys posting about how awful it is to have to read threads asking about the update knew fully well what this thread was when they chose to come here.
I don't see how people can be so unaware of common sense that they would be surprised that a phone called the Samsung Galaxy S II getting the ICS update might confuse people who own a phone called the Samsung Galaxy S II into thinking they are getting an update to ICS.

By looking at the history, you can tell how long it usually takes for Samsung to deliver an update for carrier phones. As far as I can remember, for the T-Mo Galaxy S, it took them about 5 months to update to 2.2 AFTER the International Galaxy S received 2.2. This was about a month after google rolled out 2.3 via Nexus S.
The reason for the delay is because every carrier wants Samsung (and other manufacturers) to ensure that their bloatware works fine on their updated versions. And no matter how good Samsung's Hardware is, their software division is freaking slow!
So good luck waiting for 4.0. My guess is that it will be out by May/June/July/August.
Sept/Oct/Nov/Dec
Ok , thanks. But the real point of this thread was on HOW to UPDATE to ICS when it would finally come. It seems like everyone missed the point here. I don't really care when the update would come, that was never stated in the thread title nor did I ask for a date in my opening post.
I was fully aware that the "When is ICS going to arrive for T-mobile??!!" has been asked a hundred times, which is why I only asked HOW to update.

Well if ICS does come for our device in about 6 months.. you can always ODIN back to stock (check allgamers stickies) and wait for an OTA update, but you might have to wait for someone to exploit root access for 4.0... sooo i would wait until a dev creates a rooted stock ROM of 4.0.

Eh , the saddest part about it is how most failed to READ the thread. It was clearly stated that help was needed on HOW to update. The question "When will the update arrive?" was never stated in the opening post.
To answer the op, there's 2 ways to do it. first is to flash back to unrooted stock and wait for the push from tmo. Instructions are here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=22881355
Second way is to wait for a deodexed or rooted version from a dev and just flash like a normal ROM.

I know there's GSM support for it. I'm unfamiliar with AOSP devices. Will there be, or is there good developer support for the device when used with AT&T? I'm coming from a SGS 2 SkyRocket.
If you're not using the GSM version on AT&T there's probably no reason for you to be a troll.
Have you seriously not read a thread or news article in the last 24 hours?
That's not an AT&T Galaxy Nexus. Its an unlocked i9250 GSM model. Works on AT&T, T-Mobile, or any GSM carrier in the US/World. Its the same (save for pre-installed Google Wallet) as the European model that's been sold for the last 5+ months.
Seriously?
Google Officially Selling Galaxy Nexus GSM in USA via Play Store ($399)

I understand that... The phone will work on AT&T. Never said AT&T is selling it. FFS I linked to the Google page for it.
I just seen this today. The question is: is it worth it? If there's not going to be any developers working on it. It's probably not worth it to me. I'd probably just get the SGS 3.

I understand that... The phone will work on AT&T. Never said AT&T is selling it. FFS I linked to the Google page for it.
I just seen this today. The question is: is it worth it? If there's not going to be any developers working on it. It's probably not worth it to me. I'd probably just get the SGS 3.

Please just leave this thread and go join the other ones. You clearly have not read about the device, because it is the EXACT SAME as the other ones. It won't be a special phone that requires different ROMs or development. The phone has been on sale for over 5 months.

Is it worth it? Think any developers will support it? Currently have a SkyRocket.

I updated my question to be a bit more clear.
"I know there's GSM support for it. I'm unfamiliar with AOSP devices. Will there be, or is there good developer support for the device when used with AT&T? I'm coming from a SGS 2 SkyRocket."
The damn trolls are deep in this forum.

No, we're not trolls, we're just tired of people that are uninformed creating irrelevant, duplicate threads before searching or even reading the titles of the threads on the first page of the forum.
Obviously this phone has developer support, it's a Nexus. It doesn't matter what freaking SIM card you put in the back of it, its still the same device. GSM device support is GSM device support. Read. Please!

So are pointless, redundant threads apparently.

FFS ppl the OP was just asking a question. Yes the GN sold by Google is supported by AOSP and will have [email protected]!# ton of ROM and development going for a long time
Per your suggestion I've looked through the last 5 pages and there's a couple that's semi similar to mine. The official announcement: which I could try to start a conversation there and it get lost in the general chatter about it, and another question like mine but about the battery. I could hijack his thread. That would be cool? Instead of trolling, which most of the replies have been, you could have said something like "I seen a post earlier that might help out". The replies have been absolute crap. If you're tired of seeing it ignore it.
I'm Never used an AOSP device, or an international device. Before I bought it I thought I would come over kick up a conversation with some people that have a GN and ask some questions. General stuff about development on it. Is there a difference between this one and the international version.
The way you people responded to someone that has never been in this specific device's forum, or messed with any variant of the device before is not right.

Thank you!! I'll talk to you.
Thinking about buying it. Never used or paid much attention to AOSP devices because AT&T doesn't sell them. Are there any catches coming from Non-AOSP devices? I wasn't sure if there's any catches to using the international GSM roms with AT&T. Completely clueless here. I don't necessarily have time to read every post for 10 pages. Looking for a general overview of my questions.
You asked a really obvious question which is why people are responding to you the way they are. The question also doesn't make much sense since it is hard to believe that you this little about this phone. I think you are asking if the Galaxy Nexus works well with AT&T. The answer is yes. It also works well with any GSM network provider. There is good development for this phone, and nothing has to be or will be unique to AT&T.
There's no catches to using this phone with AT&T. Everything works great. Well actually, there are a few catches, I wouldn't get this phone if you were hoping to have:
1. Delayed software updates, or no updates at all
2. Terrible superimposed user interface that is more buggy
3. Lots of bloatware like AT&T Navigator just in case you wanted to pay AT&T for something Google gives for free and does a better job at.
If you are looking for any of those, then yeah, that's the only catch.
Why would I every look into a phone that I can't use? It has nice specs. I can't use it. Close. What's obvious to you isn't so obvious to someone else. Maybe it's all exactly the same as what I'm used to, or maybe there's some stuff you you "just know from experience" that I wouldn't know.
I read your post twice and I have no idea what you were trying to say.

Maybe a better question is: "Do the GSM ROMS work correctly on AT&T without any catches? If there is a catch are the developer pretty quick to help fix, or do the developers ignore AT&T"
I know this is not a primary AT&T device so I know the support is going to be back burner. I just want to know how back burner it is.

Yes all GSM rooms currently in the GSM development section will work and all future ones too.

This is what I'm saying. You have a very very weak understanding of how this works. Do you really think that there are specific ROMs and tweaks for all of the dozens of carriers people are using this device on? Its an unlocked GSM device. There's no special software needed. You put in your SIM card.
Developers suppor the device. Not the network.

SIII or Optimus G

Hey guys,
It's finally time to upgrade my old Galaxy S1 Epic (please don't laugh lol), I was planning on waiting for news on the new S4 but nothing solid has come out and my Epic was royally messed up from a game of football.....Note to self - don't play football with a phone in your pocket.
I know I'll probably get some bias comments since I'm posting this in the Samsung forums but I'm hoping for some logic as well. I know in terms of technology, the S3 is on the verge of being out of date. The Optimus G (on paper) looks to be an amazing phone but I know that LG's track record on updates as well as community development has always been lacking.
Would you guys get a S3 this late in the game or the Optimus G and hope for the best in terms of support/development? I can't afford to buy the phone outright so I'll be locked into a 2 year contract with Sprint and will be stuck with this phone for the next 2 years. I played with both phones at the store and they're both pretty cool, but I'll admit that when it comes to phones I am kind of a noob and would rather get honest opinions from people who have the phones and might know more about the future hurdles of it.
oh, the S3 is at Amazon Wireless right now for $50 and the LG Optimus is $99....both great deals imo! So I'm going to need to make a decision soon before the sale is over.
Thanks in advanced!
Ill just say this i will never buy an lg phone. This s3 is an amazing device and i have zero complaints about anything regarding this and i have had this since early june.

lame.. why not just don't post or answer his question even if it isn't suppose to be here..
anyways.. I'd vote for the SG3, mostly just because Samsung will at least try to stay up to date.. While LG always seems to fail in the category..
2 things, battery and sdcard
Thanks eveyone! I posted in the other post as well and got an answer there too. I'm going to go with the S3, even though the hardware is older than the Optimus G, I know that the development community behind it is amazeballs. I had the Epic 4G for awhile but since there were great development groups behind it, I was able to happily use the phone for a long time without complaints. I just can't take that gamble with the LG phone....looks great on paper but I don't want to be stuck with stock for 2 years,
I just got off the phone with Bestbuy and they said they'll price match Amazon Wireless so I'm going to pick one up for $50. Woot!

Answer was sent to OP via PM. However, We still gotta play by the rules either way we go. Overall, choice is going to be down to OP to figure out what they would like to do. So, my opinion may not matter..
I said S3 either way. I agree with post above me, non removable battery and lack of SD expansion is HUGE turn off.
I just don't like lg
Also s3 has the 48gb from drop box
I also like having the option of having Odin fix stuff if they go horribly wrong
Also s3 has a super solid dev community
Idk about the optimus g

This is a valid question - on the one hand, it isn't a big deal to handle the occasional misplaced thread... but on the other hand, just answering the question does nothing to help the OP to ensure that he doesn't make the same mistake twice (which will, in turn, make misplaced threads less occasional and more of a problem)
The important part is for all of us to be careful not to attack each other, or to react to such a reminder as if we're being attacked - if we wanted to start a multi-page argument, it would be more effective to bring up debatable matters of opinion than known facts such as forum rules
