[Q] How to test if battery is fault - HTC One X

Hi guys.
I've got the one x some weeks ago, but I can trust that battery have so short life. I see in Battery Thread [ this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1579392&page=100 ] people with one x living for days and using this a lot. Mine not, not with Custom Rom or Kernels... I wish that is a problem of Htc and Tegra drivers, I wish that new bases can help me... But for now, how can I test if my battery is fault ? There is a test in android apps or something else? Please help me, thanks!

Make a full charge and then run battery test.
type this is keypad *#*#3424#*#*
then start your battery test and keep your phone untouched. Before doing this keep your phone in flight mode.
You should have left atleast with 88% percent battery after the test.
post your result here.

is it necessary to keep it in flight mode and what about wifi should that be turned off as well and what abt screen brightness?

Airplane turns off WiFi and app turn screen to 100, and anything over 70% is a pass if its under 70% then it needs to ne replaced.

i think il run this later, my battery is poor on stock, can just about scrape a full day, if i force myself to use light.
however i was using AOKP rom last week and battery was much improved. back on stock atm, a few to many bugs for daily use, atm.
does this test take long? im thinking when is best to do it? i need the phone on all day/evening, so i thought when in bed, but if it takes hours, il be asleep time it finishes, so il not know the out come. or do you get a report waiting for you?
so i it fails, how do you go about getting a replacement? contact HTC directly via web or instore where i purchased ? as EU Law says my *contract* is with the seller , not manufacturer, as the seller has the contract with them.

It feels like my battery keeps getting worse and worse. I did this test couple of days after i bought a phone, and the result was 93% after one hour.
Yesterday before going to bed, i restarted the phone, closed all running processes, and ran the test again, this time (two weeks later) my result was 86% after one hour. After finished the test, played with a phone for maybe 15mins (picking new wallpaper) and went to bed. In the morning i found my phone at 34%, i have never experienced such a big drain overnight before. So maybe this test is not too accurate at all. after picking up the phone and reading emails for 5mins, my battery goes to 21%... i am starting to think, that my battery is going worse.

No app is shown in battery information list. Or is there other way to check?
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA

if u seem to get an strange power drain, best rebooting, and it should kill any service that is going crazy.
if this is happening regular then the problem will be with the battery or like said above a rouge app.

[Q] G2 ate 45% of my battery in 1 hour (UPDATE)

UPDATE BELOW
So here I am sitting here on the verge of a fit that would not be good to have at work.
I went to my friends last night (a pro at android phones) and was hanging out with him. I brought up the fact that I have been having REAL BAD battery life. So he takes my phone and looks at it running some tests. He proceeds to look up at me and states " you better call t mobile and get them to send you another phone." *swears like a raving loony* This is after running the battery dead and leaving it on the charger for 8 hours to condition the battery. When he said that to me by the way he explained that my phone is searching for a signal 55% of the time and that is what may be eating up my power. NOW, I know for a FACT that I have a 100% signal all day long... I live next to a t moe cell tower and work next to one also.... and during my commute I have 100% signal.
I guess what I am asking here is has anyone else seen this happening on their phone? I also noticed after my buddy downloaded a system monitor that the CPU is running at 100% all the time. Common sense with computers tells me BAD BAD BAD.
Why am I so upset over this you ask? Well, the service of t moe's signal and quality of the network of where I live is GREAT! However I have had BAD luck with all the phones I have since I have been with t-moe. The Rzr: sent that back about 8 times ( went and got a windows phone with my own money after that), the BB 8900: 5 times, and now all this BS with the G2 after just having it a month is getting to be a friggen P.I.M.A.
I know they are going to want to send me just the guts of the phone and not a new one.... I WANT A BRAND NEW PHONE! I am sick of referbys. It's a waste of my time and money to be driving to the [email protected] mail box to drop off the return.
HELP!!!!!!
Your loyal 911 Dispatcher.
P.S. to give you a good idea of how bad the battery is being eaten up I was at 100% this morning at 6 am. Now I am at 64% and dropping fast. So I always have to have the phone plugged in.
Update people:
Yesterday when I got home I called T moe and talked to a Retention CS. I went right to the top. The lady I spoke with was either blowing sunshine up my arse or she was telling the truth so take it as you read it here I guess.
So first thing I did was explain to her (nicely btw) of all the issues I have had in the past with all my other phones I have owned with them. Of course she did sound concerned. I also went on to tell her that if we do go to the point of sending me a replacement that I wanted a new boxed phone and none of that crap in a UPS box with stuffing.
After some conversation and questioning of my phones history she advised me that:
1. The issues that I (and others) are having are known issues and they are well aware of it and are working closely (In bed with them?) with HTC about it and should be seeing an OTA soon with a fix. ( I will believe it when I see my phone).
2. I figured since I had her on the phone and laughing that I would press the issues of the teathering rumor... Now again take this with a grain of salt if you wish but the details she told me leads me to believe that she is very up to date on what is going on. She stated that in fact they are working on developing something about charging for teathering... I didn't press the outside apps for teathering though. She stated that it would not be a contract thing and that you could activate and deactivate it as needed on your account so that you were not always paying each month for it if your not using it.
3. Battery draining issues. Solution..... Sent me a new battery via next buisness day shipping. Said I had a bad battery.... Also told me not to keep the phone plugged in since that is the fastest way to kill your battery and that I should discharge it and rechage it as needed.
So there ya go people. Again take it how you want but I hope me spending this time typing this out helps. ( my boss is paying me to type to you guys )

Try pulling the battery off your phone for one min and then reinsert it into the phone. Was having drainage issues like you and that helped. If not try a factory reset. Who knows... that could help.

Try going to settings, applications, manage applications, and check and see which apps are tuning in the background. If an app is piling a load of data then that could be what is killing your battery.

Already done and done..... Only the basic componants of the phone are running and a few things I am always using handcent SMS, Beuty widgets.... and batt watcher.
Did you try a factory reset and not install ANY apps. Maybe that beauty widgets is killing your battery or batt watcher. Or you may have a defective battery.
my wife phone the 1st day battery ran out real quick but maybe because she was texting to much but i use my brightness at 100% and i wak up at 9 and lasts me to like 10-11pm and about 40min of uno played
Well my wifes phone is running the same widgets and programs that I am.... I take that back shes running 3 times the ammount I am..... and her bat lasts her all day and then some...
In the beginning my phone had the same problem too..but now its way better I use to recharge my phone twice a day but not nomore..I think just wait it out..that's what I did..and my friend also just bought this phone and she's having the same problem..I think its just when there brand new it does this

just a quick update thread bump... update in my OP
I noticed this too. One day my batt lasts all day, and well into the next.
Other days (twice now) the battery, on the same setting, with the same usage,
drained obnoxiously fast!
This phone has some serious schizophrenic issues.
Battery Question:
Is the Tmobile G2 Battery 1300 mAh? ir 1400 mAh?
Only asking because I went through three G2 reviews and they all list it as 1300 mAh, however the HTC Desire Z coming here to Canada is listed as 1400 mAh... ?
Wait, how am I supposed to not keep it plugged in? I plug mine in before I go to bed and unplug it when I wake up. Am I supposed to wake up an hour and a half into every night's sleep to unplug my delicate phone? Why the hell don't they just have it stop charging the battery once it hits 100%?
I am 9 days in on my fourth G2 and until this morning i believed I had a keeper. By a pure twist of luck I did not have to get up at 5:30 am so as to arrive at the tennis courts to give lessons. Upon arising at 7:20 am I found that my battery had gone from 100% to 1% and turned itself off. The phone was in standby when I retired to bed and had not been used the entire night.. Obviously the alarm had not gone off and the phone was unusable. Upon plugging it into a charger it still would not boot up. After waiting 15 minutes and letting it charge I tried again and it did boot up and showed 60% of battery. I have never ever had a battery charge to 60% in just 15 minutes. Upon checking battery usage I found the following: Android system 27% Shop Savvy 23% voice calls 35% Display 11% phone idle 4%. I had not made a phone call and had not launched any apps. I certainly had not used Shop Savvy and the display had been off. I have noticed recently that upon waking the phone up I would be running various apps which I had not launched. I use my cell as my alarm so I cannot keep it if it is not dependable or is acting erratically. Has anyone else had this scenario happen? I have been reluctant to give up on this phone but after 4 units all with issues I guess its decision time. NOTE it just dropped 19 % in less than 3 minutes while in standby, with no apps being launched by me and the phone just sitting there in sleep mode. Just tried to access the market and no go. I am experiencing only G or E where I normally have good 3G or H. Perhaps this is T Mobile and not the phone but this happens way too much and does not occur with my Vibrant or Nexus One.

Mugen 1650mAh

Anyone try one of these yet? I just ordered one I will report back my results..
Ya report back I am aware they have it but when I try to order it few weeks ago it was out of stock. I have used Mugen Power in the past and I trust them over Seidio and other BS. So post the stock size data on it and usage when I order it ill provide more info so other can benefit from it and order it also.
I just ordered and received mine from mugenbattery.com
I also ordered/received an external battery charger from ebay (yiboyuan).
So we'll see how it goes. It doesn't say 'yiboyuan' in the ebay listing, but you can see the logo in the pictures.

Did you get it by ordering it last week? or was it back order. They should have it in stock by now ill go place order also and post the benchmarks.

The one website says its backordered until Feb 28th. This is where I ordered it and it says its in stock. http://MugenBattery.com/tmobile-mytouch-4g-extended-power-battery.htm
Let's us know how much better it is than stock since you have it already. I will report back my results when I get it and have a few days to condition/test it

So far so good, I guess.
I drained the battery, then charged it on my external ebay charger for 12 hours.
After my last battery drained out (the 1500 mah one that came with the charger), I stuck this one in.
It's been 5 hours and the battery meter still says 100%.
Some notes:
1) I've been at work and the phone has just been sitting on my desk.
2) I just got this phone and am basically testing how long I can stretch out the battery. So my phone has basically everything shut off, and I turn stuff on as I need them. I manual refresh widgets whenever I happen to be interested in whatever they show ( weather, mail, etc ).
3) My gut feeling is that to compare batteries you need to do: full charge a battery, then play a video/game to drain out the battery asap. Otherwise stuff like strength of 3G signal can make a huge variance over a long period of time.
4) I'm wondering if the phone's battery meter is confused because this battery is supposedly more powered than the last one. If this new battery is really 20% more powerful, does it need to drain to 80% before the battery meter twitches?
How will the lower bound be affected?
- Frank
My battery came today. I will be letting it charge overnight for the first time tonight. After the first 4-5 charges to condition it I will test it to see how much longer than stock it lasts. I will try to make the tests as close to possible (trying to keep usage the same) After myy first tests with the battery I will then test out the stock battery and then post my comparisons here.
Sweet looking forward to see the result

I second that so results/feedback please, as I am interested in ordering it also.
It's pretty good.
I am a very very light user mind you, but I am at 43 hours with 15% left.
From what I can tell the display is the biggest battery bleeder.
So I do semi regularly check e-mail/facebook/google maps, but not for long periods, and my screen is set extremely dim. (Which is completely readable in most settings)
- Frank
Thanks but can you be more thorough if you don't mind? for example you don't have to do anything as you can do your daily normal activities. Just charge MP1650mAh fully to 100% and before you unplug it record the time and don't charge the phone until you hit 10% the record the time again and calculate the duration and check how much time has elapsed. Then once recorded do the same with stock 1400mAh battery and once you have the results compare the time between the two and tell how much more time you got to use with MP1650mAh.
Since alot of variables you would encounter with the test above you can do extended control testing if you are up to it by recording the data. Put the screen bight high as possible. Turn on all service so it hog the CPU along with data/gps/ect. Make sure you run a HD video from SDCard and let it run for 1hour and see the difference between 2 batteries results and post it here.
I got my battery but I think it was defective so I sent it back and they are sending me another one. My stock battery was lasting over 2+ hours over the mugen and I did what they said for the first 5 charges, let it charge orvernight and the let it discharge fully. The battery drain was bad. I sent it back last week and I should be getting the new one this week. Once I get it I will be doing the tests again. I only got about 6 hours on the mugen with mid/heavy use and got 8+ with the stock with Med/heavy use. I'm really hoping it was just a him battery

Okay graffixnyc, but to be honest when I got MP1300mAh for my HD2 just like you I seen same result as stock battery out did the MP at first but as time went on MP came on top. I made sure it wasn't placebo effect lol so I did extended testing on it. I have no problem jumping from our stock 1400mAh to MP1650 as even with stock I get decent battery usage.
Anyone with this battery done multi meter test to check the actucal mAh? I wanna get one but i'm always sketchy about these aftermarket bettery cells not quite matching up to what the manufature says.
Bump really wanna get this but I'm not sure if its worth 50bux. Any comment?

I'm still waiting for the replacement to arrive.. Dont worry I wont forget to update you guys I'm also going to try to make the usage on both the stock battery and the mugen equal. send the same amount of texts, emails, web browsing (time and sites visted), media playing etc.. I will try to do everything exact on both and see which holds up better.

One X battery fix?

Okay so I presume all of you one X power users have noticed a the horrible battery performance. I only got my one x yesterday and I'm already frustrated with the fact that i yet again have to carry my charger around with me. Is there a fix? I have root and custom recovery. So if there is a fix for this please someone let me know.m
Since I flashed the Revolution HD I got excellent battery performance. Without doing too much stuff (just calling and texting), battery remains > 50% at the end of the day. I would really recommend that rom.
I've just flashed it, going to see how it goes. But I would've expected HTC to bang a beast of a battery for the beast of a processor and massive screen its gotta run. Oh well, still early days, hopefully we'll see massive software improvements.

Not really, no. Personally I did not unlock device, neither root it, neither installed any fix. And I must say that I'm more happy with battery life than I was with my previous phone SGS2. More then 16 hours here with 4 accounts synchronization on, 3g/wifi on, and sometimes gps + music on (for Endomondo). I'm really happy with my One X.
ARHD Rom, auto-brightness, plain wallpaper, no haptic feedback, no roaming, managing syncing, and a few other tweaks will leave this devices battery life as one of the best.

I try to use as much as I can the first few days, and time it so that you have about 10-30% charge left when you reach home from work/school and then I let it charge overnight.
I know quite a lot of time was spent idle, but 60% after 7 and a half hours isn't too bad http://twitter.com/Dev_Meltus/status/194082996767309825/photo/1/large
I've not really had a problem with battery life so far.

Have been seriously contemplating getting the One X.
My first choice had been the Galaxy S3..... but the One X seems the better choice.... I have had the iPhone 4 for almost 2 years, so now it's almost upgrade time If the Galaxy S3 had no physical home button I would be taking it.
Had been worried about the battery life of the one x but after reading these and a few others it seems worth it and it's available in black (dark grey but darker than S3 metallic blue)
I Just hope I don't have issues with app incompatibility for the apps I use on iPhone.
With normal usgae, I've got more than 10 hours after one charge. Not so happy with it but it's good enough for me.

i also want to swap my iphone 4 with One X and looking for different experiences especially with the battery life
I've turned everything off and left my phone on idle, my battery issue has persisted for over 6 months now (I bought it in Singapore on release day). With screen on min brightness, static wallpaper, most apps off, my battery drains fully within 6 hours. If I actually do anything with it like make phonecalls, it drains in hours. The battery phone is constantly hot, when on charge It's almost too hot to hold. If while on charge (AC) I use it to make a call, it complains that it's not receiving enough power. Should I look to get a replacement from HTC? I'm still using stock rom so it should be covered under warranty?
Sounds like the htc amaze battery overheat..
Also get gsam battery app.. it will tell you what apps are using what % of battery.
I also use advanced task manager from play store.. it proved to me how much gmaps Facebook and other bloat was ALWAYS RUNNING!.. I got root and froze it all with big improvements
Some of us who htc amaze w no warranty bought a new battery and that fixed it
e-Sex.. All of the carpral none of the tunnel

Aside from your time travel/exaggeration, I suggest better battery stats, finding out what is causing wake lock, and killing.it.
Your phone is fine, but you have some crapware on it.

SH23 Serial number

Just recived my replacement One X and the serial number starts with SH23, There is a problem with network access and the screen has like a rippled effect under it when the screen is off.
Is it worth sending this one back again???
Sooo glad I never got one of these

Flawless sh23 here.
Can you elaborate the rippling effect when screen off? What's it like when lit up?

you are allowed to have all the fun you have, but SGS2 is famous for endless QC trouble on launch so don't abuse it
as for the question, how can it ripple when its off, it must be flexing?
SH = Serviced Handset = Refurbished.
Sent from my HTC One X
Wrong.
SH= Shanghai China built.
HT= Somewhere in Taiwan.

and pretty sure there are no refurbished units yet when I got mine lol
SH is china and we don't have nearly as many reports of defects from the Chinese made phones

Mine is SH 23....Just sent my phone for replacement ealier because of the flickering screen... now i have to wait for 4 days at least to get my replacement because the shop where i buy want to send it first tu the distributor for exchange.... i hope that my replacement phone have no problem... damn, this is ONE phone that i not satisfied buying...
SH23 here.. no problems or issues.
SH23 here, no problems either.
SH23 have flickering on light grey colors. Everything else is solid.
Battery drain might be a bit higher than normal, was initially really bad. Hit 60 degrees celsius just leaving it on max brightness home screen. Turned it off and charged to 100, then saw the HTC Test function app using the dialer. Did that and battery drain was more normal. Still doesn't seem optimal so today I'm gonna drain all the way and then charge the phone fully while phone is off.

How long have you had your phone for? I've had mine since Tuesday and battery life has been less than stellar, but I also expected to have to go through a number of charge/discharge cycles before it improved.

I've actually only had it for 2 days so far. I got it thru a trade on craigslist so idk how long the original owner had it for. Less than two months probably cuz SH23 means it was manufactured in march.
I actually somehow fixed battery drain a bit all today. I think draining your battery and charging it while your phone is off helps. It somehow helped me. Before doing it, I tried the HTC test and hit 60 degrees celsius and drained to like 78% with 15 minutes or less screen on time.
After just turning it off because it was overheating and letting it charge fully while phone was off.....I did the HTC test again but this time using the actual HTC test function app by dialing *#*#3424#*#* and doing the battery test. Drain was normal and about 30 minutes every 10%. Also tried to replicate drain issue and overheating by going max brightness on my homescreen and couldn't replicate. Was hitting the normal 36-38 degrees celsius on max brightness.
Make sure to put your phone into airplane mode and have screen timeout to never before doing this. Once you click run, it will start a timer for 1 hour and drain from 100%. After the 1 hour, you should be around the 80% battery life mark, and above 70%. If it's at like 70% or below, you have a problem. If it's abnormally hot, you may have a problem.
Mine kinda went away after charging to 100% with phone off though which was really weird. I'm gonna drain and fully charge up. Then perform the test again and see if it's even better than what I just got.

Thanks for the advice. I'm running Insertcoin and it appears the HTC test function app has been removed. In any event, I won't be too quick to judge the battery life on the phone. Once custom kernels start dropping for this phone I suspect battery life will greatly increase.

Yea, I was on a ROM, but decided to re-lock and go back stock until issues start to get solved.
Kernels will definitely make a big difference, gotta wait till the sources are released though. And hopefully S-OFF

[Q] HTC One X battery life issues, first charge problem or.....?

Hey guys, I just got my HTC One X a few days ago and this is my third day running on this phone.
I wonder if giving it a first charge for 8 hours was needed to condition the battery and giving it as much battery life as possible.. Because when I first received the set, the set was without juice. So I charged it up till about 15% and I received a notification about an FOTA update and I went ahead with it.
After the phone reached slightly over 35%, I let the phone install the FOTA(while still at it's first charge) and it hanged halfway.
I didn't know what was happening so I tried rebooting the device(as removing the battery wasn't possible with the One X). After several tries of holding down the power buttons, I removed the microUSB cable attached to my phone and the phone went blank and it restarted by itself.. Take note that the battery was only at ~30% at that point of time..
And one thing I noticed when the phone didn't respond during the FOTA update was that the AC plug was not as hot as it was used to when charging.. Yeap, so does anyone know if I have actually 'damaged' the battery or maybe it's just the handset that's power hungry? Thanks!
PS, Thank you for taking your time to read this long wall of text and taking your time to reply to my query!
I'm not too sure what the problem is now. Is it about the power draw, or did you brick your phone and wondering if it was caused by a damage battery on your side?

Well, I'm just wondering if me not giving a proper 'first charge' has anything to do with it's poor battery life or it's just natural for the device to be this power hungry, haha.

How much screen on time ate you getting?
You shouldn't charge while flashing the OTA.
I don't think you did any harm.

I haven't been able to get any numbers yet because these few days I've been running the phone mostly plugged into the wall socket. Yeah.
I only had a two hour battery life after the first complete discharge and 8 hour recharge.

Assuming your FOTA Succeed,
Try...
1. disable fast-boot (Settings > Power > Untick fastboot)
2. Power Off
3. Charge (until green / 100%)
4. Power On
5. enable back fast-boot
6. Hopefully you got real battery-stats already
I've noticed some improvement of the battery life of my phone after flashing it with a custom rom.
With a giant screen, a powerful processor, and an elegant packaging, pour battery life is kind of expected, for me I've put chargers almost in every corner of my home, at work, and in my car.

I normally get about 3.5 hours ++ screen time on a full charge, auto brightness.
I am getting 5 hours of on screen time on my stock Rom. Is that possible to get more screen time like 9 hours on custom Rom ?

I didnt charge it when I first got it either. I booted it instantly and used it untill the battery was completety drained and the phone shut down untill I recharged it completely and my battery life is horrible. The worst of any HTC one x so I wonder if I might have damaged the phone aswel??

Charging it when you first get it does nothing. If you have such bad battery life it is probably a faulty phone.

When I first got mine I ran it till it died then did a full charge so that shouldn't matter at all.

My battery was ok on 1.26 then updated to 1.28 and it went beyond awful but after about a week of use on 1.28 my battery has improved a lot... Bought an external charger while was waiting on next update but before I received the charger battery went boss !! So my guess is give it a few days and don't be inpatient with it as it will come around

I'm having issues with my battery life. I'm also new to the Android platform -- well sort of, I've used CM9 on my HP Touchpad for a while now, but this is my first Android handset. I've had the phone for almost a week now, and I've noticed that I barely get around 9 hours of moderate use per charge. On average my on screen time is about 3.5 to 4 hours. That is terrible. My iPhone 4 is lasting twice as long as my HOX and I've had that thing for about 2 years now. Any tips on improving battery life?
