SMS app that shows the time when a message was sent - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

On my ol' HTC TP2, the text messages showed the time when they were sent and when they were received. Any android app that does a similar job?

i use handcent and you can longpress the message you sent and click on message details. it shows the date and time...not sure about the received times

Stock does.

GoSMS does as well. I like it because it also has a built in backup/restore function so when I see a new ROM in the Dev section and the flash-aholic in me makes me download and try it I have an easy way to put back the SMS messages which are otherwise lost in the flashing process...

Thanks for replying. I am using GoSMS and I can find out when a message was sent. This should an option you can turn on to display permanently. Stock doesn't seem to do it, unless I am not seeing an option somewhere.

[Q] SMS/Text Question

Ok so is there any setting I'm missing that will change a SMS that goes over 140 characters to a MMS so the person I'm texting does not receive multiple text.
My wife and I both have SGIII's and when she sends me a long text it breaks it into several text instead of just one long text.
Is there any way to change this?

exuse me but i can't understand you.
could you be more clear?
When you send or receive a text that is longer than 140 characters it is sent or received in multiple messages instead of just one longer message.
Is there a setting that let's you receive messages longer than 140 characters in one text instead of the message being broken into two or three smaller messages?

Try handcent I think that has an option to do that

I would really like to keep using the stock app if possible. Not a big fan of adding apps if I don't need to.
Here is a screenshot of me sending myself a text. You can see it is received in two parts.

as far as i know, CDMA phones can only go up to 160 characters per text.
so that option in handcent is only for the GSM phones which can send longer texts than 160.
so unfortunately you cant change that. now i do know that there are some roms that after so many messages (like 3 or 4 sms in one) it converts it to an MMS rather than an SMS, i don't know if the stock sms app does it, but i know that the handcent app has an option to disable it to rather then sending 3 or 4 sms as an MMS it sends all 4 SMS's.
but thats my 2 cents worth.
It can definitely be done. Are you running stock or do you have a custom ROM?

I was thinking it could be done because I've had that built into almost every ROM I ever ran on Verizon and their network is also CDMA. I just switched to Sprint a few weeks ago so did not know if it was a Sprint thing.
I'm running FreeSG3-v0.0.9.1, if there was a write up somewhere I can decompile whatever needs to be changed and make the changes myself.
I haven't ran stock since I first rooted my OG Droid...

I looked through the development thread and did not see anything about it. I even used the search. If you could provide a link I would be forever indebted to you.

If you're running an AOSP rom, open up the Messaging app and hit the menu button. Go to settings and scroll all the way to the bottom and you'll see it!

What app is everyone using for sms?

Just curious to see what people are using besides the stock app.

I came from an iphone and always used bitesms so when I got my gn2 I went straight for chompsms. It's really all I know but I love it.

Just got my Note2 yesterday and I'm still using the stock one for now. I'm trying to turn my GN2 into a Nexus, so I'm looking for an SMS app that is as close to the Vanilla Android SMS as possible.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
i personally prefer go SMS purely because of the crazy theming features + private box
Can you send pictures with GO sms? I heard it just sends a link?

I'm using the stock sms app themed
ChompSMS, I love how it renders picture messaging to full screen. Opposed to the stock which looks more like a thumbnail. GOSMS was to convoluted with options/themes for my liking.

Using AOSP messaging app. I would use the Samsung stock, but the lack of vibrate options kills it for me.

Go SMS, been using them forever. You can send pictures, but sometimes I have problems with that. Only since I rooted my phones though. It gives me an error message, something along the lines of exceeding my file size limit. I just used the stock messenger to send mms/pictures.

I am very happy with stock... first time I've ever been able to say that. Prior to that, I used GoSMS and Handsent on all of my other devices. I forgot which one of the two I settled on. I want to say GoSMS was the better of the two IMO.
GoSMS here for years and I've been happy with it.
Stock sms app with sms pop up. Great combo and I am very pleased.

If you look hard enough in the settings you can change the max size to send and stop it from shrinking your pictures. But like I said before if you see d through go SMS and the received doesn't have go it comes up as a link

In sound options theres a setting for vibration intensity and pattern also on the contacts app theres options for making vibrations specifically for a contact. I think there might be a limited amount though.

It doesn't. I think it's from an older version of AOKP. I'm not really sure where it's from. I found it in the themes and mods section under a similar thread.
Edit: I'm using the APK from here and then follow the instructions here
And this recently up in Themes/Mod sections might help

I don't like the vibrate options because when selecting vibrate in the SMS app, it vibrates in sound mode and vibrate mode. I only want it to vibrate in vibrate mode like my GS3 did on ICS.
For those using Go SMS, can you confirm if Go SMS sends you push ads in your messages? When I tried Go SMS I got a spam sms from them.
Stock message...for now.

Messaging app on stock problems

Does anyone else have issues writing text that are longer than one sms long? If so, is there a fix. This app has had the same issues on each update.
Another problem is when I go to compose a new text and I am typing the person's name in the contacts box it won't show the phone number I am trying to send a message to. It happens when I text my wife. I will type her name and it will show every other phone number she has but her cell phone. Can't seem to figure it out. I went into the contacts app and set her cell as the preferred number and that didn't fix it. I don't think that issue can easily be recreated.
So those are the two issues. Also, are those issues on the custom roms? I would imagine they are at no fault to the devs.

I am a noob but wanted to try and duplicate your issues on my phone.
I am flashed stock ZVB. I use GOSMS but tested the stock messaging app for your questions. I sent 2 text messages that were over the character limit. One sent correctly (1 of 2 and 2 of 2) the other only sent the second half of the second message (2/2).
I did not notice any issues with contact names.
Hope this helps.

[Q] messaging bugs/issues

Got my one the day after release day from Verizon. I've been noticing a couple little bugs going on with the messaging app and want to see if anyone else is having the issues. Friend of mine has the phone to and he seems to be issue free.
The first issue is when hanging up a call, I often get a " unfortunately messages has stopped". No idea what's causing it but it's happening Pretty frequently.
The second one is hard to explain but I'll do my best. A few times while messaging multiple people individually, it some how puts the full message that I just sent right back into the text field. Almost like I never sent it but I did. Ends up saving the message as a draft so I have to erase it. I haven't figured out the exact steps to make this happen but if I do, I'll post it here.
Anyone else having these weird issues?

Not sure if this will help you, but I had imported my old messages into the new phone during setup using the HTC app (I forget what it's called). Messaging was messed up when I started using the new phone. I deleted all messages and cleared the messaging app cache. All perfect since then.

It should split when you send mine does. Try a third party sms like gosms or chomp sms.
Sent from my SPH-L900 using Tapatalk
Sprint is CDMA network and has trouble with more than 160 characters. If you're on a custom rom, like AOKP or CM, there generally is an option in sms settings to auto-split.
Sent from my HTC Sensation using xda app-developers app
I use Sprint's stock messaging app and have no trouble sending messages longer than 160 characters, and they split properly on the other end. Do you get an error message or anything when you hit 160? Mine counts down characters to 0/160 and then continues on with 160/160, 159/160, etc.

^^^ This. I also use stock messaging app and never had any issues. I also use the auto-combination feature and when people send me messages longer than 160 characters it combines them back into one message. It says it only work from Galaxy to Galaxy phones but that's a lie. My sister has the EVO LTE and when she sends me long messages they come in one whole text.

I'm running MC2 4.1.2 stock rooted and have auto-combination checked, but messages still come in split, at least from my son's AT&T iPhone. Is there anything else that should be set to get it working, or is it an iPhone thing?

Maybe it's because she's with a different carrier. Another cool thing is that my sisters EVO is also combining long messages too by default. However you still see the 1/2 - 2/2 on her EVO unlike our Galaxy which does a better job.
Edit: Nope it don't work from ATT iPhones. I just received my cousins text in two..
