Flashing nightly build questions - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Have some general questions flashing nightly builds.
1) when you flash a nightly build do you need to reflash a a2sd script, GPS fix, vipermod...ect every single time you flash a nightly over a previous build? If not are my voltages for viper mod already set or do I need to change them? Just curious how much is actually changed if you do not wipe all and just apply a new build over a previous one.
2) let's say you are encouraged to wipe all before flashing new build and you actually do. So after wiping, flashing rom, a2sd script, and any other zips you desire, you boot up. Are your apps that were previously on a2sd going to show up? If not, is there a command to use for them to show up or do you just need to start over?
Thanks in advance for any answer. I've looked around before but for some reason this questions have stayed with me for awhile.

[Q] How can I Installing MUI 1.2.4 (Evo)

Im running ClockworkMod v2.6.0.1 and I originally wanted to flash the new MIUI ROM 1.2.4. I followed the directions numerous times with no success. Then I decided to just Flash the first MIUI Rom 1.1.7, Yes Success! Then I tried the next bit of directions for the ones who presently had an older version (1.1.7) to upgrade to the new (1.2.4) and still I could not get that to work. I guess it was not meant to be. But i really hope to get the updated one later this evening when I attempt it again. Maybe im doing something wrong...help me out, Im trying to get used to this. Thanks!!!
Very easy, friend.
In Amon Ra/Clockwork you must wipe your /data and caches. (Also known as "full wipe").
Then, the magic bit - you must also wipe /system.
After performing these wipes install the MIUI .zip.
Then I personally install Zendroid 1.1.0 AVS / BFS.
I reboot then, and I am in MIUI.
I then enjoy MIUI.
I hope you enjoy MIUI.

To install MIUI, you need to do a full wipe [data reset, cache, dalvik] then flash your rom. After that you can flash a keernel if you wish to.
I've always used Calkulin's format-all.zip to fully wipe before installing or even updating MIUI. I rarely have any reboots. Don't forget you need to set the wifi sleep policy to Never.
Thanks to all!!!

You guys have been helpful, but let me make sure I understand correctly. Stated by BigMoogle. Im in recovery, I flash format-all.zip and also wipe [data reset, cache, dalvik]? Now that I only need an upgrade, all i need to do is format-all.zip and then flash the new updated version?

Just flash format-all.zip. No need to also write data, cache and dalvik. Then flash the rom. Reboot. Set wifi sleep policy to Never.
I have seen your name on MiUi dev site.

If you are coming from CM6, I would wipe, cache, dalvik and data when you flash CM7. CM7 is updated "nightly," hence the term. The only other file you need to flash to run CM7 is Gapps. Just make sure you flash the latest gapps (0307) if you are flashing nightly 14. You should flash them in the same recovery session.
Once you are on CM7, when new nightly's come out, you can flash them on top of your current CM7, but it is best to do a nandroid backup before you do in case it messes something up. I also always wipe cache and dalvik before flashing over, although I don't think you have to. Also, if you flash, say nightly 15 over nightly 14, you need to flash gapps again in the same recovery session, otherwise your google apps won't run properly.
where can i find the latest gapps (0307) i cant find it

Q: what should I do?

Hi, so I'm super green but itching to load custom kernel and rom... So my Evo is rooted and have seen some pretty sweet roms, lol, kinda scared to flash and not sure what roms go with what kernals, do I even need a new kernal? What I really want is a kernal I can overclock to 1198mhz, and a rom build based on honeycomb and or gingerbread that is 100% stable or as close as I can get... Help? Lol...

hahah exited aren't you... welcome to the root world!
you asked for hc/gb. google hasnt released hc source code yet, probably not until ice cream, so there is none of that. you can however download cyanogen(mod) 7, which is almost totally stable.
http://mirror.teamdouche.net/?device=supersonic
there's the mirror link. download either rls4 or nightly 33. nightly 33 is a bit funky bcuz cyanogen is pulling an april fools prank saying he sold cm to teh duck revolution, and the rom is now called 'teh duck uber distro'. so maybe rls4 or just wait for the next nightly.
everything works. 4g (with one bug that there is an annoying fix for), hdmi (download hdmwin from the market) gps (with a fix) and everything else is perfect. it is still in beta/nightly stages, but should be done soon. it is my daily driver, as well as many other peoples. this rom is crazzzy popular. try it for sure.
start with stock kernel, but i'd try both savaged-zen and tiamat kernels on it. they will both give you much better battery. tiamat tends to give slightly better performance/quickness but savaged-zen (on custom SAVAGEZEN governer) gives fantastic battery. try them both!!!
again, welcome to the community. hope this helps.
Where do I get the kernals? And what process do I use? I have clockwork premium... I just don't wanna miss a step a jack myself
Also, is it gonna wipe my phone, do I need to wipe it? No issues with that though as I do it all the time... And thank you so much for the feedback BTW, still a little confused...

ok, first of all, clockworkmod isn't the recovery you want to be using. download amon-ra's recovery here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026 make sure you get the pc36img.zip. put the pc36img.zip on the root of your sdcard (that means not in any folders) MAKING SURE IT IS NAMED EXACTLY PC36IMG.ZIP. aka just dont rename it. then power off your phone, and once it is off, hold power and volume down. you will see a white screen with scateboarding droids at the bottom. this is your BOOTLOADER SCREEN also known as hboot, and you see it quite often. so hboot will scan your sdcard, and find the pc36img.zip. hit volume up to accept the 'update'. then once it is done, volume up again to reboot.
you can download kernels from the evo android development subforum right here at the xda.
so first flash your rom. you can either boot up into it, or just flash the kernel right away. flash the kernel just like you would a rom, but without wiping.
enjoy.
any other questions, ask away.

100% agree. Amon Ra imo is the much more stable & user friendly recovery
Alright, so, can I do all this just from my phone? Is a pc recommended? Will my stock kernal overclock? Never flashed a rom before, I'm an electronic/computer tech so I pick up shniz pretty quick but still don't wanna b---- this sucker...
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
you can do it all from your phone if you want. i perfer downloading on my pc and transferring from there in case i want to modify anything, but you can always just dload on phone. make sure the pc36img.zip isnt in download folder or anything if you do. it needs to be on the root. your stock kernel can't overclock sadly. if you have never flashed a rom before, then cm7 will be crazy different than stock rom. most custom rom's are based off the stock htc software, just modded. cm7 is aosp, which means it is stock GOOGLE software. htc spends quite a few months modifying htc sense into google software, so the speed and memory increase is very noticable. just wipe data, cache, and dalvik cache when switching roms. you might want to backup your apps and their data using titanium backup. just dont backup system data, that can cause problems. then flash the rom after wiping, flash any kernel or addons you want (dont forget to flash gapps if it is an aosp rom, bcuz if you dont u wont have the market or anything) and reboot. for any other mods you install after that on the same rom, just wipe cache and dalvik cache and then flash away. wiping data between roms is always reccomended. if you want to stick with the cm7 nightlys, then all you need to wipe is cache and dalvik. there is never much of a problem with just flashing one over the other without a data wipe.
and forgot to mention, you cant control amon-ra recovery with rom manager. but then again, rom manager is just a touch screen version of recovery. you get used to the volume/power keys pretty quickly.
ok, im freaking out now, my phone is locked in the cm little surfer droid with the arrow circling around been constantly running for about 45 mins, im fuct, really fuct without my phone!!! its my only internet too!!! PLEASE HELP!!!
Did you do a factory wipe, Clear the cache & wipe Dalvik?
Sounds like it just wasn't a good install. Do the above in recovery & reinstall your ROM
ya did you wipe? doesnt sound like it. make sure data, cache, and dalvik cache are all wiped successfully. also make sure you are using amon-ra recovery. cwm can sometimes give you problems.

[Q] CM7 on Rooted Gingerbread

Ok Fellow EVO owners, for those of you still around, I know you are busy applying the S-Off and Root to your phones, but have any of you tried the next steps of loading another ROM? I am currently trying to load on CM7, however after it finishes flashing the ROM, it boots into the flash animation and just stays there. Tried clearing cache to no avail. Looking for possible solution...
Need more information.
Most likely you aren't wiping SYSTEM, however.
Flash Dalvik?
What information do you need?
I have to admit I am new to the Android scene. Phone was updated to the OTA when I purchased so I have been lurking till now.
Here is what details I have:
S-Off via the Revolutionary method just released
Replaced Clockworks with Amon-RA
Successfully performed backup and restore of device to test
Downloaded CM7 latest Stable version and placed on SD-Card
Booted into recovery and wiped Cache and Dalvik-cache
Flashed .zip from SD-Card
Got the message that it was successful
Within Amon-Ra selected reboot device
Device booted into the flash screen for CM7 and it just keeps cycling that screen over and over, it never actually proceeds into the OS
If you need more let me know.
Thanks
You need to wipe everything.

First let me say, Welcome to the flashing scene. You will be an addict and we're here to help you out
I would recommend flashing this first:
http://dc370.4shared.com/download/KV-YsWJ7/VR_SUPERWIPE.zip?tsid=20110815-030517-d546271d
This will wipe your phone's memory.
Then flash the CM7.zip. Let me know how this goes for you dude.
Wipe Data, System, Cache, Dalvik, android.secure, SDext, boot, and everything I might've forgotten (except SD card). Flash VR Superwipe (http://www.virusrom.com/Tools/VR_SUPERWIPE.zip). Flash Cyanogenmod, flash GAPPS (Google Apps: you want this if you want Market and such - packaged separately due to legal issues). Reboot, enjoy

I looked around for like an HOUR trying to figure out the gapps issue, couldn't find the package. (day 3 of S-off/root)
I do have a question tho, is the SPRINT Visual Voicemail available in the market or do you need a special package to get it to work? I have seen a little about it on the forums but have yet to find much info..
I know there is a gapps zip in the evo deck thread that has sprint vvm included. That rom is very similar to cm so you could try flashing that gapps instead.
Anyone know if cm7 and that gapps package has been tried... going to bed now but could try tmrw.

If u search on here there is a fix for the sprint vvm. If when on a sense rom use titanium backup to back up sprint vvm including data. Then once u flash cm7 and its up and running use titanium backup to restore sprint vvm + data. There is a flashable zip also somewhere around here. Id link u to the thread but I'm on my phone right now
To op if all the wiping doesn't seem to work it could be ur SD card. Sometimes it goes bad. Transfer everything off and then format SD card after that transfer things back and try again

confirmed, the gapps+vm from the deck evo thread worked like a charm..

Question about gapps/updating to a later AOSP-based ROM

I've never used an AOSP ROM before, but now I am currently on AOKP. When I want to update to a newer version, do I still need to flash gapps after flashing the update? I assume I have to reflash the kernel as well if I use one different than the one included with the ROM?
You need to flash GApps straight away after if you are wiping your device. You also need to reflash the kernel of choice after. Good luck.

Only wiping I would do would be cache and dalvik since I am merely upgrading the ROM version, eg nightly 19 to nightly 20. Would that still involve flashing gapps?

Yes
10char.
You shouldn't have to reflash GAPPS if you are just updating..
2 separate answers. Anyone else want to chime in?
You have to ref lash the kernel because flashing a rom flashes the from kernel. I've never had to flash gapps on any device if going from an old build of a rom to a new one unless specifically stated.

Just think about it. It depends on how you flash and if you flash an update.zip if that zip wipes existing data or just adds to it.
For a sure answer you would need to say what method is used and how the update edify script in the zip looks like.
Now for someone how knows the rom you're talking about in detail and what files are provided there might be a clearer answer, but not every poster does know such details^^
The answer is no, if you just update a rom without wipe, you dont need to flash gapps. This type of rom update keeps all your data in tact anyway so of course no need to flash extra.
