i cant sync contacs but i have set up my google account, i just can sync calendar... what to do?
Go into Accounts & Sync, in Settings. Tick the contacts option. Or if it's ticked, untick it and tick it again.

theres is no contact option, thats why im scared. just calendar syncing
Can you access your contacts by opening your dial pad? There should be an option to save just to phone or to save/sync to Google account when adding contacts.

i can save to google acc, but it says its not synced and it not syncs to google.. used latest nighly, rc1, rc2, gapps 20110828
EDIT: have just installed gmail app, and it says this account not configured to sync automaticaly, but i cant do it because i cant sync it, it just says not synced
You should be able to go to accounts and sync in settings click auto sync. Gmail sync should be there now..make sure it's checked (green) if you set your contacts to sync to phone and gmail it should work. If they were set to phone only you might have to edit or redo your contacts.

Try re-flashing the latest gapps.
Go to contacts, menu, import/export, import from sim, choose your google account then sync up.

Sorry this is wrong

re-flash the stock rom
backup contacts with any other phone to the sd card

First off flashing a stock rom over cm7 requires a data wipe which would delete all the contacts he has on internal memory which as he can't sync them to Google would mean they're lost forever.
Secondly if he copies the contacts to sdcard using another phone wouldn't that mean they aren't his contacts?
Or did you mean put his contactless sim card in another phone too?

To check which contacts are synced with Google go to:
contacts.google.com
Related
I keep my contacts on Googles servers only, there are none saved to the SIM card or phone as such.
I just changed ROM, restored using Titanium Backup, and now only three contacts show and they are ones that I added manually using the phone. It has synced to Google, but the other contacts just don't show (they are still on Google when I log in via the web).
Any ideas about this?
ta.
Have a look in Menu->Settings->Accounts & Sync - for the email account you are using, is "Sync contacts" checked?
Also, assuming you are using a Sense-based ROM, go into People and select Menu->View - again, check that you have checked "Google".
Regards,
Dave
Hmm, I tried this and it didn't work, but I did eventually figure it out so will post it here in case anybody else has this problem:
After doing what is mentioned in the previous post I went into Settings, then applications, then manage applications, pressed "all" then found 'Contacts Storage' Press Force Stop, then Clear Data, then restart the phone.

I too wonder why sync is not working. My settings are so as you advised in your post + autosync is active, but still 0 google contacts in "people" (i thought my phone contacts would be transferred to my google acc. Am i wrong?)

what usually works for me is clearing the data in your contact storage app(settings>applications>manage applications>running>contacts storage>clear data). this will delete the contacts on your phone, then resynch them with the server..... if contacts do not come back right away, then it is something to do with the connection to the server and they will come back when the connection is restored. this works for me with Gmail not synching as well.
everytime I restore a backup of my phone I lose all my contacts that I added between the date of the backup and when i restore!
Is there anyway to keep this from happening? I keep losing important phone numbers! Im sure my gmail account sees that a contact is missing from my phone and then deletes it from my gmail account.
The simplest and best way may be to use import/export from the contacts menu. And/or your favorite backup program.

When you add a contact you are saving to Google and not the phone right? Also export all your contacts to SD card before doing anything. When in contacts, hit menu, import/export to SD card. I believe you can use this to export them to your gmail too.

Umm, that shouldnt happen...otherwise you couldnt start from a fresh rom install and then hit sync contacts, and get all your contacts back. My guess is your new contacts never synced

well what happens when you delete a contact and then your phone syncs?
I have my phone set to always save them to my main gmail account and not my phone.
So ye, I have no idea where they are going., Ive definitely saved them and seen them in my contacts.. and then later they are gone, if I have to use a restore.
I dont really want to manually export my contacts everytime I add a new contact just to ensure I wont lose their number. The instant gmail backup of contacts is one of the things that sold me on android.
Is there a way to prevent this from happening? Like delete protecting the contacts in my google account?
Like has already been said, your contacts should be syncing to your gmail. When you reinstall your phone, said contacts should re-sync just fine. Check to see that you have background data and sync on under accounts. Also, go to gmail online and see if they did copy.
Make sure your backup is as current as your latest sync and you should be fine.
Loaded quite a few roms...never had my contacts lost. They always pull back down from gmail. I didn't setup anything special.
Lost contacts
I have been losing my contacts every day since my xperia s updated to ics. Now saved them to the phone to see if that helps. Don't see the point of active sync if they fight with each other and delete your contacts.
Sorry, I should clarify. I was using a lumia 800 as a tester for Nokia and installed my contacts from my Live a/c.
Can anyone help? Unlocked LT26i o2 branded. Android 4.0.4

I'm trying to root my friends phone but dumb dumb saved his contacts to the phone and not his Google acct. Now when I go to people and export to SD it only gives me the Google option and fails.
So I started entering the contacts by hand into gmail. At first there were duplicates showing up on his phone but they later disappeared. I don't know if its the original on the phone or the synched one.
Any ideas how to move these to SD or get them to Google ? I guess I could add them all into gmail and when I root his phone with new Rom hope it will sync but is there an easier way ?

If you add them to Gmail, root the phone and flash a new ROM to his phone, when you set up his Google account it'll sync automatically, so the contacts in Gmail will show up. Since flashing a new ROM requires clearing of user data/factory reset in ClockworkMod, all of the old ROM info is gone so you shouldn't have duplicates.
definitely do not waste your time writing down numbers...
Back them up using verizon backup assistant. then go to the verizon website and export the contacts into a .csv file
Then just import it into gmail.
you'll be done in less than 15 minutes.

Every now and then my contacts will be lost and in setting > Google > Sync Contacts will say it synced but all my contacts are gone. Some times I can just re sync and it works but other times it doesn't. Is there a way for this to not happen?
Or sometimes it will say Sync Contacts has an error and will not sync to Google and I'll have different contacts on my phone and on Google contacts

make sure when you save a new contact that the name is saved as a gmail contact and not on your phone. there are actually two contact "books" on you phone, the internal phone contacts and the gmail contacts.

Yeah that is not it. I always save new contacts under gmail not phone. I think its something to do with syncing with google

Personally never had that issue. Occasionally sync goes down for a minute, then comes back up. If you are like me and keep sync off and changes roms, if you added a contact and didn't sync, you could miss a few that were added.
So i'd jut double check to be safe.

What ROM are you using? Stock, Stock rooted, TW-based, AOSP (4.1.2, 4.2.1, or 4.2.2)? I've ran all of these (and then some) and haven't run into anything like this, but if it's ROM-specific, knowing what you're running will help narrow it down.
Cheers!
same thing here
Sometimes my phone log just shows numbers and when I check my contact list it's empty.
Reboot phone and they are all back. My contacts are on Google but was wondering if there is a way to store them on the phone also.
Some way to download to a file on the phone?

Go to the contacts app, press menu > export
Then select the account and it'll export to your scarf as a CSV file
There are also apps that let you import/export your contacts as an XML file
